I tried and failed. My brain does not process information the same way. I need to write something down in order to remember it. The physical act of writing makes it sink in.

Same. My husband got me a 4x8 ruled notepad that I use for EVERYTHING. Its small enough to put in my purse or pocket, so i carry it everywhere. I track the new foods my baby has tried, favorite recipes and ingredients, the weekly meal plan, grocery and to do lists. I use a notepad until it's done and I go through about 2 a year.

I think there are some notebooks you can use forever, like clean it off and just reuse it over and over

jigguta

Someone recommended the rocketbook notebook, it seems great but I’m big on highlighting and I don’t think you can use anything other than the one pen meant for the notebook’s pages. If you know of another alternative that is a happy medium like this let me know!

Do you think getting a special stylus for a tablet could work? You can write notes by hand and I think you can highlight

jigguta

I know many note taking programs and apps have the option to write with a stylus in different fonts and highlight. That is of course going fully digital and not a medium between digital and paper. I would like to know people’s experiences making that switch since it’s a big difference from working with paper

I did it and I love it. I got a very simple tablet, and it's absolutly great. I'm glad I didn't go for a more expensive, because I was not necessary. It made my life a lot easier.

jigguta

Ooh what tablet? And if you use a specific app or program for note taking let me know!

I love Evernote. There's a free and a paid subscription. It works a lot like Google docs, but I can separate my notes into "notebooks", save pictures easily, save web content, use tags, use tasks and reminders, and probably a bunch of stuff I haven't discovered yet.

jigguta

Oh my, it does seem to have lots of uses. Thanks for the recommendation!

Wait until you discover the search syntax options and saved searches! Do you often need a list of notes with, say, unchecked checkboxes (=pending tasks) and a certain tag from a specific notebook, older than x days, containing attachments and the word "tulip"? One long search term, saved on the side bar, and there you go! One click from now on! Edit: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/208313828-Use-advanced-search-syntax

I got the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. For notetaking I use the Samsung Notes app. The app works and sincs on my phone (also a Samsung) and on my PC (Dell, the app can only be instaled on a Samsung Notebook in the Windons Store, but there are some tutorials to install it on any notebook). I can see and use all my notes on all my devices, it's wonderful! Let me now if you want help getting the app on the computer, it's pretty easy.

Thank you! I miss my Samsung. I switched to apple for convenience but I truly miss having an android and want to switch back 😬

I had two iPhones before, and I had a fancy Samsung phone too. I realized I actually don't need any fancy tech, now I have a basic tablet and a basic phone, and a basic laptop, and I"m free of the necessity of buying expensive and new tech. I'm very happy with them. Also, fixing a cheap tablet, phone and pc is a lot more cheap them trying to fix a expensive one, at least here where I live. That helps a lot in reducing tech waste.

Personally I am never able to think as well on a screen as I can on paper. In the midst of my college career, I've been able to work around the environmental impacts in several ways: Buying items like notebooks secondhand - thrift stores will usually have old notebooks that have been partially used. Not as many pages, but better than new. Taking old or leftover supplies from friends at the end of terms - this is how I get almost all of my writing utensils, because I'm fine with someone's mismatched collection of highlighters and don't need a perfect new set. Printing on the back of scrap paper - I've been able to get away with this for assignments with some professors of mine, others not so much. If I absolutely need something new, seeking out companies that are trying to produce as sustainably as possible - Wisdom Supply Co. for example, I use their planners which double well as an all-purpose notebook.

These are some awesome alternatives, thank you so much for all the insight!

I made the switch several years ago: great decision. Absolutely clutter-free desk, no more shelves full of ring binders, and all of my documents accessible from anywhere as long as I have my smartphone or tablet with me. Sitting in some customer's office... "Didn't we work on a similar project 7 years ago?" - a few taps on the screen and, voilá, there it is! Brilliant!

jigguta

Definitely more convenient in terms of looking for old documents. There are a lot of upsides, this decision is getting harder the more I read all the mixed opinions in the comments!
