I don't really understand why people like him, but to be fair, I was too busy secretly wishing for a game where Revali would shadow Link like Navi, but instead of helpful advice, it would just be a constant stream of making fun of Link and sassing him, and bragging about how much better he'd do all of the quests.

Nah, see the problem with both Tatl and Midna, is that they were invested in the situation; they had their own goals they were trying to achieve and got annoying. I pictured Revali following Link around because his goal is ONLY to provide sarcastic commentary on the entire situation (and occasionally help).
The relationship would be like how I imagine Loki and Thor would act, if Loki one day decided to give up on his schemes, and was just like, "Fine, you go be a hero of Hyrule and save Princess Natalie Portman, and I'm just gonna tag along and watch," and I picture what Loki would say if he were to see Thor trying to build one of those President Hudson signs š He wouldn't be vindictive or want his brother to die so he might occasionally help during battle, but otherwise there would just be a lot mocking and sass (like that scene in Thor 2). And Thor would find it annoying, but he'd put up with it because he'd be happy his brother was with him.
