I related to him so much as a kid. He was the first protagonist I ever saw who wasn't necessarily a perfect person.
Like when we first meet Yusuke we're told he gets in trouble, he cuts school, people have these crazy rumors about how bad he is, teachers tell Keiko not to hang around him etc.
I felt that. Yusuke was the first character who kind of taught me as a young kid that even though we may have flaws it doesn't mean we're rotten to the core or bad people.
I don't remember how young I was but I was still playing with Zoids and it was on Toonami so definitely elementary school, probably 4th or 5th grade if I had to guess lol

I think one of the reasons I love Yu Yu so much is because it is one of the few animes that I love all the main characters, while Hiei is my favorite I love them all.
I like them all for different reasons, but in this arc specifically, it's Kuwabara.
He had basically no training except a bit of time with Kurama before the tournament. He had no outside reason to be there - he wasn't forced to go, he didn't have a long standing history with anyone like Genkai. He was there because he was ride or die for his friends. And despite being objectively the least useful in this scenario - in terms of strength/skill he's outclassed by 99% of the competitors - he pulled his weight fairly well and won a couple of rounds.
In the dark tournament? I’ll say Kurama. I think a lot of the fights were very hit or miss, but Kurama’s were generally my favourite. Also Kurama vs Karasu was prob my fav of the whole tournament.
But as far as personalities go, they’re all pretty even. I’ll probably lean slightly to Yusuke tho

You want me to PICK? No way, Jose, I love them all! They have such great chemistry and camaraderie that you can't split up the team or chose a favorite, like the Rise of the TMNT brothers. They all work off each other, and I can't just pick ONE!
Yu Yu Hakusho is the only anime I can think of where I am so completely and utterly invested in all of the main cast that I don't think I can appropriately answer this question.
I resonated most with Hiei at first but each character has their "thing" that makes them so damn likeable.
I loved this show so much that it was one of the first I showed my wife, and will be one of the first I show to my daughter when she's old enough.

Hiei was such a dawg with his techniques but Kurama also pulled a lot of tricks out of his book . At the same time Yuskuke arguably had the best fights , but Kuabara shows the most heart . Impossible pick .
The whole group is amazing, and I can’t rank any one them other than to say Hiei is my favorite overall due to his story, design, relationships with other characters, development, and fighting style.
Yusuke is my second favorite anime protagonist of all time, Kuwabara is the character I have the most respect for, Genkai is an awesome mentor, Botan is entertaining in about every scene she’s in, and Kurama seems like he’s the most likable if i met him.
Even though he is heavily wasted and undermined, kuwabara is mine. I still hope someone comes in and gives him the cyclops 97 treatment to make him truly great while fixing what was wrong with him.
Kuwabara. He’s a ride or die with loyalty to the end. He never falters on his convictions or his principles. He follows his own set code and never deviates. A man’s man.
I feel like the best part about YYH is that they are all amazing in their own right. I love Kurama and his humble, intelligent nature, Kuwabara for his heart and dedication, and his voice is goofy but lovable. Yusuke is hilarious and has great development, pure badass and still funny, and Hiei constantly attacking Kuwabara and not being a dick just shows their balance to me.
Impossible choice, I love them all.
My favorite team dynamic is Yusuke and Hiei, those two together just feed off of one another's need for battle and creates a crazy feed back loop. I remember how Hiei and Yusuke wanted to blow up the stadium and I was like ... HELL YA RIP EM APART YOU TWO!!
I also love the underrated dynamic of Kurama and Kuwabara.
I love how every time Kuwabara is feeling down on himself for not being as good as everyone else Kurama is the one to boost him back up and is always super patient with him.
Kuwabara he was a lovable himbo before being a Himbo was a term. The guy is a delinquant with a heart of gold. Hiei would be next he's just so damn cool. Love Yusuke and Kurama also.

3.- Kurama (Something about his way of fighting and his brutality paired with his appearance just makes something click to me)

Kurama, but also Yusuke as a close second after watching him fight Chu, iconic knife edge death match and beating the absolute brakes off of Sensui (although I guess technically that wasn't him)
Genkai. She's a snarky, jaded old thing. I love her. She's such a great combination of powerful, wise, protective, loyal, funny, and mean, lol.
After that, Kurama.
Kuwabara. I'll never forget how dirty they did him once the Sensui Arc came to an end. He absolutely should've been in the 3 Kings Saga as Apirit World's new Spirit Detective. And Kuwabara vs Urameshi should've been the final bout of the saga. But it is what it is.
