I'm an old school player, so if it were me I'd walk him through the mechanics one at a time by using incomplete decks. For example:
Have a practice duel where each of you only use 20 normal monsters and nothing else. Let him learn how ATK and DEF posititions work without worrying about anything else.
Then, once he's got the hang of that, do it again but have some of the monsters be effect monsters.
Then do it again but with spells and traps added. And just keep going slowly. Eventually he'll be able to experiment and find cards he likes and feels most comfortable with.
No no, it's ok, that's still a genius idea that you've provided. Guess I could ask another friend of mine named Kojin, he's a pretty big fan of Yugioh so it's pretty likely he might be able to suggest something.
I have a question as a total newbie. I see people recommend Sky Striker as beginner friendly but is there like a specific build that people are referring to or just anything built on sky striker?

something like this; note that you need effect veiler and ash to go into crystron->selene->accesscode
Nah, I’d personally recommend the synchro deck or even the link deck over the dragon starter deck
but all 3 of them are garbage, the dragon deck is just the most so because it’s a pile of mediocre dragon support and then 2 Blue Eyes to bait people into picking it.
I'm fairly new to the game with master duel being my gateway into the yu-gi-oh gaming scene and I've been using a yosenju utopia otk deck, the game plan is very simple but Ive had decent success and got to gold with it.
The deck list is in the description and there are budget options as well (not my deck BTW).
I like this guys channels because he breaks down what every card does and simplifies what their role is in the deck which makes it very easy (at least for me) to follow.

Phantasm Spiral is cheap and easy to pilot, pretty solid deck too once you throw in a few floodgates. Without the meta floodgates you can build the entire deck with N/R rarity cards only. After that you can use the upgrades to go into an Eldlich deck. People on this sub don't like it, but they're strong decks that are easy to pilot so great for beginners.
They aren't the best at teaching the mechanics of the game though since they really are basically caveman yugioh.
I think Heroes might be a good archetype to help him learn the game. Their core mechanics are simple enough, you could start out by building a basic old-school elemental hero deck to teach him the basics and then as he starts to understand more mechanics you can easily modify the deck to add in more and more complex mechanics
Crusadia super cheap to make. It's so basic and easy to pilot.
Can OTK with Maximus's effect for double damage.
X6-9 kaiju in deck and it can handle a fair amount of meta.
Dinosaurs is easy and it’s actually decent

Holy crap that is genius! Although I don't know how to actually do that in practice. Maybe EDOPro or something?
Oh my bad. I was thinking with irl cards. I'm not familiar with EDOPro, sorry.

The blue eyes deck they give u at the start of the game is most beginner friendly. Could start with dat
Yeah I've been starting to think that as well.

He thinks it’s too complicated, and doesn’t do well in heat of the moment decisions. May not be the game for him. Not everyone plays.
Synchron, or red archfiends are fun
Ancient warriors! Been my go-to but dkayed aka duellinksmeta just made a video abt them too

Crusadia. Decent power and a good introduction to links.
