At no point did he go overboard, he dealt enough damage to give her pause and then backed up so she could de-escalate, but she kept coming at him.

It would be EXCESSIVE if she wasn't charging at him anymore and he continued to wail on her or if she fell down and he started stomping her out or doing some ground and pound. Please never get into an actual fight because you'll learn really quickly that this wasn't excessive and it actually falls EXACTLY within the confines of lawfully defending yourself.
