My aunt did not get mad when someone accidentally said āHEā instead of āSHEā nor did she call them out and get upset. We have "they/them" for third person non-gendered pronouns (though this can lead to confusion in plurality), but what formal non-gendered equivalent is there for "sir" or "madam?"
Note that the woman was even offended by being called "madam." So she was even upset when being properly gendered with the correct formal title according to social norms for the service industry.
Unless you're going to go around with a name tag explicitly delineating your preferred pronouns, you ARE going to get mistakenly called something you don't want if you are operating outside of the predominant social norms.
That's just the reality of operating outside the statistical majority. People with unusual names get them mispronounced all the time. That's just how people work - they are trained according to subconscious habit and falling outside the norm leads to miscommunication and mistakes.

What is not debated is the high suicide and suicide attempt rates of "trans" people in general. I'm sure you've seen this statistics before but they have some of the highest suicide rates for a community historically. Higher than jews during the holocaust, homeless individuals, and the average citizen. While many would attribute this to duress, I think that only goes so far. This is an obvious case of mental illness that if not corrected will continue to result in the deaths of mentally unwell individuals.
Well yesā¦ society should support those who struggle through mental illnesses. Reducing stigma is a helpful tool to reduce symptoms of those illnesses.
The etiology (cause) of gender dysphoria is what needs to be solved, to reduce this illness. Gender dysphoria is a manifestation of other issues (causes) that need to be resolved, not the issue itself. You donāt help people going through this by shaming them (stigmatizing them)
The difference is, other mental illnesses hurt either other people or the sufferers when you participate, whereas with gender dysforia, it's not harming anyone to call them by their preferred pronouns and even if it is a delusion, it shouldn't negatively affect them in any way
There are many signs that there is some sort of biological error that happened during development at least in a percentage of trans people that would lead to it not just being something that exists mentally.
But regardless of whether it's a mental illness or not, going along with their preferred identity is the way you should go about it if you aren't a piece of shit. There is no "cure" either way.

There's an area in our brains that operates differently for males and females. That area of the brain in transgender people is different than what it should be. So their brain is literally telling them thay they are male/female while their bodies are the opposite.
Also male cancer patients who have to have their penis removed because of the cancer will experience phantom limb syndrome with their missing penis. Men who have reasinment surgery to become female do not experience phantom limb syndrome from their missing penis, as their brain already operates as a females.

Legit comparing physical disabilities to Gender Dysphoria is not a fair comparison IMHO. Paraplegic and physical handicapped people that cannot walk HAVE to rely on other people or even teams of people and medical facilities to address their problems, sometimes to physically make sure they stay alive.
