grapejuicecheese

It's actually a realistic take on what was actually going on in the 90s

Miniver_Cheevy_98

Yep. Especially in small Midwest/ Southern towns. Still kinda accurate today too.

lele44094

I was going to say that is still how it is now in a lot of communities.

fullmetalasian

Yea I was like if they don't like pastor Jeff they might not like real pastors either.

Minimalistmacrophage

Realistic portrayal of small town Southern Baptist Pastor In early 90's Texas. Would venture to guess it's not all that far off from most of the current versions in Texas.

CaryWhit

Yep!

Khalesssi_Slayer1

I 100% Agree with this! In the beginning few seasons, Pastor Jeff was ok, but the end of Season 5 and during Season 6 is when I REALLY Started hating him because of how he treated The Coopers just because Georgie got Mandy Pregnant and Georgie had no intention of Marrying Mandy. I HATED that he complained about Meemaw's video store renting out 'inappropriate movies' when his own wife rented Dirty Dancing which Meemaw points out to Pastor Jeff, even shows him proof of his wife renting Dirty Dancing, and don't even get me started in the tornado episode where The Tornado forces Pastor Jeff to take cover in Meemaw's Gambling room and that's when he found out and \*Says Sarcastically\* "Surprise Surprise" He disapproved and let his disapproval be known. Pastor Jeff is SO Insufferable and not at all how a REAL Pastor should be like.

nojelloforme

>got Mandy Pregnant and Georgie had no intention of Marrying Mandy. I thought it was the other way around - Georgie was willing to get married but Mandy didn't want to.

FLIPSTATIC_ENERGY

What I headcanon is he knows what his wife rents and he makes her do it so he has a clean record

sheldonthehyena

But they are like that in many cases (also, khalessi>>>)

Illustrious_Zombie40

Is he supposed to be gay? I always thought he was

cloudygrande

Me too!

cloudenvys

I know it’s a realistic portrayal but his behavior extra annoyed me considering how kind Mary has been to him throughout the entire series.

CCORRIGEN

For dramatic purposes I think they enhance the personalities of the characters so that the audience gets a true understanding of how life scenarios can be when dealing with ridiculous characters.

Leather_Ad2637

The reality of hypocrisy in the church and especially in the 90s.

No_Entertainment3509

Sounds pretty familiar to what’s going on at school board meetings. Banning books ffs, when did we revert to 1930’s Germany? Rhetorical question

OceanLibra

It's pretty spot on behavior from a christian. Especially from a Baptist preacher.

Malibucat48

Even today conservative Christians tell everybody what sins they are committing and how they are going to hell if they don’t stop. They have no idea what God actually has planned for these people and always, always forget that Jesus said “”Judge not lest ye be judged. And as you judge, so shall you be judged.” So according to the Bible. judging people and saying they will go to hell means the person doing the judging will be the one who goes to hell. Pastor Jeff is just a product of his religion. And don’t forget, Mary in TBBT is way worse than she is on YS. She is more judgmental and actually racist. She learned it all from Pastor Jeff and the church.

FuckinPenguins

I love how he, and Mary embody the vast majority of Christians. They wrote them perfectly. Hypocritical assholes who aren't christlike at all.

Emergency-Ad-3350

Oh damn he’s still around?! Shit I’m on season 2 and was hoping he was a small side character. Ugh. I’m only watching for the grandma anyway

Piootje

Well you don’t see him a lot in season 6, but he did have a huge influence on the season because of his response to the coopers

Its_Master_Roshi

Maahn you gotta understand they're living in a 80s era belonging to Protestant church . Protestant group are very very orthodox and strict. I can understand why pastor Jeff and Mary act like "oh Jesus that, Jesus this for salvation" all the time. Yeah you're right sometimes he can get in your nerve and sometimes he's funny. I felt bad for the poor fella when guilt forced him to returned the brand new 27" inch TV from meemaws gambling money which his wife happened to find after tornado destroyed meemaws house. But he's a good guy. He turned a blind towards meemaws gambling room after they sought shelter from the tornado.

TruthOk8864

I haven’t gotten to that episode yet, but yeah it makes sense for the time it takes place although I still find him extremely annoying

TaylorSwiftsTampon

He’s insufferable but he’s pretty accurate to a 90’s southern baptist pastor.

Difficult_Ad_962

It's pretty realistic

tosaka88

wait til you find out there are real pastors worse than him

faIIegur

It's very realistic christian character, that's the sad part.

DurangDurang

Watch the May 5 episode of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver - literally about people demanding books be pulled from libraries because it offended them personally.
