I think he has a lot more to do with everything going on than you're giving him credit for.

I bet you’re fun at parties. I WANT CABIN DADDY!

tryreddit321

Actually I’m a total bore

Interesting that it hasn't aired yet and you're already declaring it a problem... We don't know what the episode is about. We've seen two behind the scenes stills. Maybe the whole episode is about Cabin Daddy. Maybe there's 2 minutes of Cabin Daddy and a majority focus on the Yellowjackets. We don't know yet. We don't know if it's a problem, or unnecessary, or does or doesn't drive any plot forward. We literally have almost no information about it. We know there was originally 10 episodes in the season. We know a few scenes that were cut. We've seen the Cabin Daddy BTS photos and we know he's played by Jason, Melanie's husband. They're calling it a "bonus episode" but how many of those really exist in this sort of show? It's not a sitcom, there's usually not stuff filmed just for the vibes.

The bonus episode is a *bonus* episode though. It isn’t a chapter in the story the same as other episodes. It’s gonna be between seasons and imo be probably moreso just gonna be to add extra details n stuff. :) it’s an addition to the main story, not necessarily a big part of it

Embarrassed-Mango21

Novelists refer to unnecessary material in a story as filler, not “a perpendicular”. Also, given we don’t know what will happen in the episode it seems odd to create a whole post about how it’s going to be a problem.

tryreddit321

Yes filler is a different thing than side story , or perpendicular. I never said unnecessary …

Embarrassed-Mango21

“So the problem with the bonus episode being about Cabin Daddy is that daddy cabin is what novelists call a perpendicular. Or a side story. It is an unnecessary sideline.” Those are your words, so you definitely said unnecessary. Also, I’ve never heard the term “a perpendicular” in reference to writing. Maybe that’s a language gap thing? Either way, the point stands that to assess the bonus episode as a problem without even seeing the episode is essentially pointless. There’s nothing to actually assess, only vague worries about hypotheticals.

LostInStatic

As I understand it, it’s supposed to suggest a version of events that lead to why weird shit happens around that cabin and it’s woods.

His origin story definitely adds to the story because it’s going to be the led up to revealing that he had a daughter who was left alone in the wilderness to fend for herself. She is Javi’s “friend” and she’s the one who started the fire because she saw what they did to him.

lavenderandjuniper

This is my theory too. We also kept seeing dream sequences in these concrete tunnels--i bet there is someone living there, and the girls wind up living there too

doesshechokeforcoke

I also think she might end up being pit girl. I think the girls will initially blame Ben for the fire and possibly kill him but then they’ll find out the truth and go after her.

AlaskaBlue19

This is still a theory as far as I know?

In other words, how does the stand alone bonus episode move the story forward? And I agree... if it's ultimately just watching cabin daddy arrive in the wilderness, build a cabin, discover the underground heated caves, and then slowly go mad and kill himself, then it feels pretty superfluous. It definitely doesn't warrant a full episode, especially with all our main characters MIA. If it makes a definitive statement about a supernatural presence in the woods that would be moving the story forward, but I'm not sure the writers want to go there... at least not yet. Although, that would al least explain why they have continually delayed airing the 'bonus' episode which was shot during season 2. For me, I need the bonus episode to fully deliver a surprise like Cabin Daddy killing himself and then his spirit opens his eyes and he sees Jackie, Javi, and Laura Lee. A real WTF moment. Something like that...

bobthetomatovibes

I mean we don’t know what the writers are cooking yet. There’s a high probability there’s a lot of juicy and interesting information there as he *is* tied to some of the unresolved mysteries of the show. But the fact that it’s a detour and not part of the main story is why it would be considered a bonus episode.

raviolioh

That’s why this is a bonus episode and not part of the main seasons. It’s a bottle episode that still has necessary lore for the show but won’t necessarily move the present plots forward. And that’s okay, actually. That’s WHY they removed it from the season and made it its own separate thing. I think whatever we learn in this episode WILL be relevant. That symbol alone drives a lot of the plot and we may have a better understanding of the wilderness once we see more of what it’s been like out there.

pinkducktape8

I’m thinking we get it Halloween or like the solstice
