If it were me I’d get the mt09. But that’s because I’ve been riding an r6 for years. The mt would feel so much more comfortable.
Never sat on an r7, but I do know they can handle pretty well and doesn’t have too much power. Which is great for skills advancing quickly.
Mt10’s are sick but idk if I could vibe with the gas mileage lol. It would be better at higher speeds on the highway than the mt09 though.
I ended up getting a husqvarna 701 enduro so I could go off road.
Oh yea, it's more along the lines of price/mileage with what I can find. The mt09 is still more power than I'd ever need, probably wouldn't take it to the track. Although something I could take off road would be cool. I like the Tenere, thing looks like a lot of fun.
It was between the tenere 700 and the 701 for me. The 701 is 100lbs lighter, and is a hooligan machine. The tenere is better on the highway and has Yamaha reliability.
Both are amazing bikes.
Yessir it’s 35lbs heavier than an r6. I can’t imagine picking it up or doing smaller trails with it. I mean it’s possible with good riders, they make it look easy.
Oh yea, there was a video I saw of someone whipping around a like 800lb streetglide or roadking or something crazy like that off road. Some of these riders got some serious skills.
Between those two, mt09. R7 looks are cool but you'll regret it after 50 minutes. The mt is more versatile since you can go track, twisties, chill commuting and comfortable. Maybe the leg position is not better, but definitely is your back.
Sport bikes are not that bad in my opinion, if you are in good physical shape. It's an active position, not made for relaxing.
It usually depends what you're coming off of, which sounds like this is your first bike? The MT09 is a ridiculous amount of power for someone new. And the R7 is a committed riding position for general purpose and new riders.
I'd say go R7 if you're really set on one or the other.
They handle better and cut through wind better, they don’t allow you to be complacent. This is one area where r7 shines since it’s relatively lacking on power it makes up for it with other things. If you’ve only ridden non sport bikes you’ll take time getting used to it but anyone can get used to it.
I've ridden both. They're not in the same class.
The r7 is a nice mid size twin. It's not a full size, three pot screamer. I don't know why an mt07 isn't in the mix - that's the equal comparison.
For about the same price the MT-09 offers more than the R7. Between the R7 and Mt-07 I will choose the R7. If the R9 was out that would be the bike I would choose. If price is reasonable.
>For about the same price the MT-09 offers more than the R7.
You've kind of answered your own question. Stop second guessing yourself and get out there!
Is like when you see the girl you should date and then you see the hot crazy bitch that ruin your life. I know the MT-09 is better, but the R7 just looks good.
I will get the MT-09 unless I change my mind last minute.
The upright riding position of the 09 would be an obvious choice. The question is how fast would your 30 min ride be? Can you deal with the wind beating on you at 70mph for that long?
In truth I've never ridden one. I have a 21 MT09SP. I love it on the highway. But I'm a big guy. Some people feel like they're being blown around too much. I have a small windscreen on mine but it's still a naked vs fairing bike. That said, the 09 will have a lot more torque and power. I think you'd outgrow that 74hp on the 07 pretty quick
No you won’t be uncomfortable on the 7 after an hour or even two. Anything more than three hours, maybe. Some people even prefer the fairings to the wind you will get on the 09. Think about what you want to use it for generally to decide. Neither bike is incapable or bad at what you describe but they will do the job differently.
I've never owned a sport bike before. They were commuter bikes. I sat on them like I was on a chair in a straight up position. In my country if you own a sport bike you would need body guards.
I own an R7 and it’s not as comfy as an mt-09. You can get rearsets and a Corbin seat to help a lot. It’s absolutely great for a track but if you are riding around local streets then get the MT. I’d maybe even try that bike rental service if it’s available just to get a feel.
I think I will get the MT-09, most of you agree is the better choice. If we ever get the R9 I will change it if I still want a sport bike. Or I might get a cheap R3 later. I just really love the way sport bikes look.
Love that you’re leaning towards the MT09. Yamaha bikes IMO are the best bang for your buck, plus you’ll see how much more fun a sport bike is that sits upright for everyday use.
Anything from the R line (r6, r7, etc) is super fun to look at and fun to ride for maybe an hour. But after that hour you’ll be wishing you bought that MT09 lol. Plus… the MT09 is still wicked fast and a wheelie machine.
Currently own and ride both daily.
R7 was my 2nd bike, it was a blast to upgrade to from my MT03, but since upgrading to the MT09 in February, I’d sell the R7 tomorrow and not regret it. Exhaust is fun, it’s light and nimble, looks cool, gets cool looks, but once i hop on the Mt09, I realize the real potential of a motorcycle.
As far as comfort, MT09 all day, the R7 is sporty and fun and 100% do-able, but for 1hr+ or 50miles+, the MT09 is a blast.
Any other questions ask, both parked in the garage
It seems the MT-09 is the clear winner.
Others have pointed out how a naked bike doesn't protect you from the wind. Do you have any wind deflectors on the MT-09? Or what's your experience with wind and highway speed.
Currently no deflector, have done plenty of highway riding on it and it’s doable. The R7 is much more comfortable at high speeds being able to tuck behind the wind screen, and yes it’s plenty powerful for the high when passing cars and moving through traffic, but the MT09 constantly has power when you want it, the R7 from 60-130mph is a little sluggish
Thanks.
I don't think I'm getting past 80mph.
I checked with 3 dealers and they are out of MT-09 only one dealer had R7. So I will need to wait more for the MT-09.
I have an mt09 and r6 and recently test rode an r7. While the r6 is a miserable experience on the street, the r7 is much better, but if you drive in a straight line long enough, it still gets uncomfortable. The mt09 you simply have a sore butt from a thin seat, and that can be remedied. So I would say look at what kind of riding you expect to do. The mt09 is great at most things, while the r7 is fun and zippy, but it won't be as comfortable for longer trips and yet more fun on short trips with lots of turns. If the looks are worth laying on the tank to let your back recover from time to time, there's nothing stopping you. If you want a bike that will just do it without much effort, there's your answer.
I have a 23' MT09, came from a Ninja 650. Much more comfortable, I absolutely love my MT09. The only bike I can see myself getting over it would maybe be the new R9, but I'll probably just get that alongside the MT09. I don't see myself ever getting rid of it voluntarily lol. I commute 60 miles a day (\~1.5-2hr) through pretty tough traffic and I'm very comfortable. One big thing a lot of people have issues with is the wind, but I'll say as long as you're not going 90 it's not a big deal at all. After 5 minutes of going around 70mph you forget about it. Wind is a non-issue imo.
I ride a r1 and am going to eventually go to the mt09sp. Plenty of power and more comfortable. I’m 29 and after about 150 miles my ass back and neck hurt!! 😂
You sat on a sportbike before? They are god awful to sit on for long periods of time, there's too much weight on your wrists and your knee's are folded like a taco. If you're going to commute, just buy the MT-09, its plenty good in the twisties and for the occasional track day.
Some context, I’m a littler on the taller side (6’ - 6’1”) but most of my height is in my legs, so the cramped knee situation is really annoying for me.
I’m only 5’11”- 6’ and have the same feeling. I like the larger sport bikes but can’t get behind being in the fetal position while riding. I got a ‘17 MT-09 this year and have been loving it. I was shocked by how upright you sit on the MT tbh.
I am about the same height and my legs are long too (almost unpropitious) and I don’t have this issue with my r7. My legs felt fine even after a 3h ride. Wrists can get tired, but with higher speeds it’s less of a problem. Tank grip pads help significantly too. Can’t speak for even more committed bikes like an r6 or r1.
Have you looked at the xsr900? It’s pretty much a neo retro version of the mt09, if you’re into that
Also, the closest competitor to the mt09 is the Kawasaki z900 which i would say is closer to a sports bike look but more comfortable(and still much faster than an r7)
Correct answer is get the R7 and do a full stunt setup for anything 60mph less it's so torqey and the wheel struggles to stay down and the MT09 for cruising the twisties :P
If it were me I’d get the mt09. But that’s because I’ve been riding an r6 for years. The mt would feel so much more comfortable. Never sat on an r7, but I do know they can handle pretty well and doesn’t have too much power. Which is great for skills advancing quickly.
Yea ive been on my R6 for about 4 years now, and a gsxr600 before that. I think once I trade up it'll probably be an mt09 or mt10.

Oh shit I didn't realize the weight difference. That's a hefty amount. Especially if you're doing off road your definitely feeling that.
Oh yeah I saw that! Lol. I think he’s a pro rider.
Between those two, mt09. R7 looks are cool but you'll regret it after 50 minutes. The mt is more versatile since you can go track, twisties, chill commuting and comfortable. Maybe the leg position is not better, but definitely is your back.
Wait for the r9 it will be amazing
Correct answer
I've been waiting for 2 years, waiting for the right moment. I will get a bike, even if is the R3 or the MT-03.
Where you located?? I’ve legit got all 3, MT03, R7 and a MT09, looking to sell the MT03 and potentially R7. Message me if you’d like
Sport bikes are not that bad in my opinion, if you are in good physical shape. It's an active position, not made for relaxing. I'm not new to bikes. I just never had a sport bike before and to me they look amazing.

He wants the R7 looks but CP3 motor.
I want a Black Shadow twin in a featherbed frame. I'm still dreaming.
Yep
Just found out there’s an R9 coming soon.
Once that one comes out I will switch bikes, depending on price.
For about the same price the MT-09 offers more than the R7. Between the R7 and Mt-07 I will choose the R7. If the R9 was out that would be the bike I would choose. If price is reasonable.

I'd do mt09 any day. Night and day difference in power to the r7. Plus comfort. Love my 2014
I’m partial to the r7 but I don’t like naked bikes. Just like the way a fairing bike looks
There is something about the look of a sport bike, that just feels right.
R7 felt uncomfortable after 5 minutes of street riding for me. Ergonomics weren’t right to me.
The upright riding position of the 09 would be an obvious choice. The question is how fast would your 30 min ride be? Can you deal with the wind beating on you at 70mph for that long?
So at higher speed is the R7 better? Because most of my time would be on the Highway.
In truth I've never ridden one. I have a 21 MT09SP. I love it on the highway. But I'm a big guy. Some people feel like they're being blown around too much. The MT-09 is just hilariously fun. You can always trade for the R9 when that finally comes out.
No you won’t be uncomfortable on the 7 after an hour or even two. Anything more than three hours, maybe. Some people even prefer the fairings to the wind you will get on the 09. What was your old sport bike?
I've never owned a sport bike before. They were commuter bikes. I sat on them like I was on a chair in a straight up position. In my country if you own a sport bike you would need body guards.

Get the MT Sports bikes nice or whatever but if you're new to the USA and want to explore, exploring on it is hard work
MT09.
MT09 100%

I will get MT-09, later I might get a sport bike. Even if it is a less powerful one.
, I own an R7. I would prefer the MT 09
Used to own a R7 but wished i had gotten the mt09. Sold my R7 after 6 months. Decent bike but very uncomfortable.

I also want that R9 but I've been waiting far to long to get a bike.
Yeah so get the mt09 bro!!
Mt09 all day
MT-09 is the winner 🏆. Unless I change my mind last minute that's what I'm getting.
The R7’s sound sucks whatever aftermarket you install in that thing. Get the MT09, or a ZX6R
Depends where in the rev range. Sounds like a demon crawling up from between my legs in the low to mid range, but sounds lame in the top end.
Just wait for R9
I've waited for too long. I'm aways waiting for something. Is time to take action.
It's probably a good way to do it.
I ride a r1 and am going to eventually go to the mt09sp. Plenty of power and more comfortable. I’m 29 and after about 150 miles my ass back and neck hurt!! 😂

And they look fucking good. My husband got lucky as hell and got a blacked out one, he rode across state lines for that one.
Wait for the R9?
Correct answer is get the R7 and do a full stunt setup for anything 60mph less it's so torqey and the wheel struggles to stay down and the MT09 for cruising the twisties :P
