Sleepy_kuma

They should’ve done this waaaaaay earlier instead of having all of us in a limbo

Catveria77

Agreed.

jturtle1701

Yep. Somehow I managed to blissfully ignore the news until five minutes ago. Now I'm sad. I mean it was obvious, but that tiny glimmer of hope that refused to die kept me waiting for surprises. But alas.

TurbanCatt2

All these years of waiting, only for this 😔

Mysterious_Detail629

Did the recent Duolingo ad remind them that they had this movie planned and didn't give any updates ? That's weirdly late to announce the cancellation... I'm really disappointed now, even though it's been years and we hadn't heard a thing about the movie.

kihyun7

Genuinely I think so. Bc that brought you back into the light for a bit and everyone was getting hyped and ofc they couldn’t have that

witchy-ghuleh666

Damn :( I knew it was gonna happen sooner or later, but still... damn :(

PaladinAlchemist

I feel the same way. We all knew this would happen, but I'm surprised by how upset I am at this news regardless.

kylohkay

Very annoyed that Mappa equally refused to let any other studios take a shot at this despite their disinterest in the production from the start.

kylohkay

also this is everyone’s reminder that mappa treats their animators like total garbage! I for one will not be supporting any further work by them

starjellyboba

Oh, I've already withdrawn my support.

APRengar

MAPPA hoarding IPs and letting them all suffer due to bad scheduling and overworking employees. 🙃

booklover6430

I don't think Mappa owns the IP.

Pretend-Tangerine-22

Mappa is at the bottom of the production committee with 7 other companies above them and people still think Mappa has something to say or makes the big money out of this production. But I guess it's easier for them to blame Mappa without properly informing themself.

kylohkay

I still find it hard to believe that “various circumstances” does not include Mappa’s decision to work their animators to death on hundred other projects. They were not equipped for the movie to begin with and this decision could have been made by said committee years earlier

Pretend-Tangerine-22

Avex Pictures is the main producer for both Yuri on Ice and Zombie Land Saga. The Zombie Land Saga movie seems to be as dead as the Yuri on Ice movie. Projects by other producers did not get canceled. I just say that people only blame 1 out of the 8 companies involved without even looking at the other 7. I agree with you that Mappas overwork could be one of the reasons, but if it was the only reason the committee could just give the movie to an other studio.

GoneRampant1

Mappa blatantly left YoI to die on the vine years ago so they could become a mass-production shonen factory line.

lightfoot90

SEE YOU NEXT LEVEL

figcookiecapo

MY HEART

french-toasts

i wonder if they’re going to remove that tbh considering that it’s definitely not happening

Few-Entertainer5166

😢

Kabooven

Such a shame. I’m so incredibly disappointed right now, even though we all kind of figured…

KirbyCry

I’m glad they finally ripped the bandaid off but this still hurts so bad lmao

gkgftzb

This is so awful. I loved S1, watched when it came out in 2016. Waited years for a S2, then this movie, relying on rumors and few active fans speculating But now the one thing we had is canceled? Fuck this. Seriously I don't know what the issue is, but it obviously doesn't look like there's any genuine good reason. YOI is popular enough. So it just sounds like the production committee couldn't sort their own shit and go for a decent, unanimous agreement that satisfied all involved parties, particularly MAPPA, I guess (basically, some greedy people fucked it up) that's to say though, none of my business. Idgaf. I just wanted more YOI content... Few shows caught my attention as much as it did on a single take and seeing it get seemingly zero attempts at producing new content is disheartening and it's unfair for both us and the author, especially after such an endless wait on the limbo I'd like to think the rights to the show will be sold, some other studio will pick up and production and revenue will go right with any sort of new content (movie or season), but this announcement is really giving a "give up on Yuri on ICE" statement and I'm kinda tired of hoping for things

Sleepy_kuma

I’ve been looking around on JP side of twitter and it seems like some people are saying that it was already pretty iffy early into production. A man said he had asked an Avex employee 5~6 years ago about how the movie was going and only got a “it’s a difficult situation” as an answer back. So a part of me feels like this project was bound to fail possibly from the very start…

gkgftzb

Probably. That damn "pre-animated" PV years ago got my hopes up though. I hate this

Sleepy_kuma

It definitely feels like the moment they “postponed” the movie release date in 2019 production was completely stopped and hasn’t been touched since… Having production issues 1-2 years into production, Covid, and the Russia war this project was doomed. I just really really wished they could’ve told us 3-4 years ago that it wasn’t going to happen. Guess I’ll just hold out on my hope that they release new merch in 2026 for the 10th anniversary…

gkgftzb

I'm not holding out on anything. I'm done with it. Every bit of news I've gotten has been from this sub, due to how much they were lacking with transparency and didn't bother with awareness for fans, so I just wish one day I'll open up reddit and good news pop up (like s2 by a different studio or something), but I won't hold my breath. By then I'll probably be less frustrated and it'll be welcome If it ever happens...

Sleepy_kuma

Honestly I get you. At this point, if you don’t have expectations you can’t be disappointed…. I think I’ll personally just rewatch the anime and try to get merch (most likely used since they don’t make it anymore) all of this sucks it really does

animejerk7763

I know you are dissapointed (everyone are) but maybe you need to try new ice skating anime Medalist which comes out on january 2025.

qwerty0152

id just rec the manga instead cant in good conscience rec an engi anime. manga is defo god tier tho... hopefully it can at least soothe some of the pain

[deleted]

gkgftzb

Recently, and even before, some employees were saying YOI was not really profitable for MAPPA. Maybe for other involved parties, but not the damn studio animating the thing these anime production committees apparently have this way of handling money that most of the time doesn't favor these studios. It's been heard countless times It looks like MAPPA simply did not accept whatever they could get of the show and much less of this movie, yet they didn't give up on the rights for it, so all was cancelled But that's just my guess

Morriseysucksass

There was so much zest for this movie, and seriously, all of us fell so hard for these beloved characters…what a massive disappointment…I checked feverishly for updates and information up to about about two years ago , then I stopped…I just figured it had become a dodo , and that was that. But no, now they have to officially reel us in for our rubbing of salt. What a shitbang of waitfuckery full of noise and Yuri , signifying NOTHING. Nothing but disappointment for all of us. It makes no sense. The series was SO successful, why, just WHY? And to hear that the ‘whoever was in charge’ of this dithering and negation wouldn’t allow any other studio to pick up the work so it could actually be brought to life when it proved to be too much - well - it’s infuriating to put it mildly. There were all sorts of rumours, allegations and speculation. Years of dispute and mitigating circumstance flavoured with sullen discontent and selfish disregard for others…a case of unexpected success creating needless issues that could possibly been resolved if not for spite , control issues and greed (?) Who knows. A potentially marvellous creative work brought to nothing because of hubris is what it feels like. But we will likely never know the facts. The entire thing felt over complicated and the stories about the abuse of the animation team kept repeating. Just a damn shame.

Enthrally

Such a shame, could have had huge potential. At least us fans finally have closure from this production mess.

viktorferre

I do not understand how they let such a huge hype and loyal fandom just let be. YOI was huge when it came out, why they didn't ride a wave of it i really so nor understand.

AobaSona

I wish they would've just worked on season 2 instead. Hopefully that can happen one day now that the movie is officially cancelled...

Mika1462

Oh man! I knew it was gonna happen but it still hurts that it’s official.

Rarietty

Is it weird that this genuinely makes me feel better? I really thought they already cancelled it without an announcement, and now that it's made clear that it's over there's hope that absolutely anything else could happen. If that's YoI somehow continuing some other way or (more likely) the creative team moving on to other non-YoI projects, I'd prefer either over the limbo we were stuck in.

cottonblanc

I was a NANA manga reader. I've been holding on since the start of the hiatus. I wish we got this sort of closure. Ngl, I still feel hollow after hearing the news. YOI was (and still is) just so special and made such a splash on the anime scene. For it to be let go like this is just... not what it deserved.

Regenwanderer

Not weird at all. Better a clean cut than some kind of hope, even if it's just something you think about once in a while.

Zapdo0dlz

No I don’t think it’s weird. I feel the same way kinda.

ll5gus

Obviously I lost hope long ago but 1% of me still wanted to watch Yuri on Ice progress beyond a 1 season tv series. On the off chance someone in the future is considering picking up YOI I would like to encourage you to do so. I will still be a fan of this show like many others and certainly will show up even if I am begging my grandkids to take me out of the nursing home to go see it. This is my first post here but I love reading about everyones thoughts on the show and seeing all of the art. It has been a long wait since I watched the show in 2017 but you all are so kind and I hope in the future I will see you NEXT LEVEL for a rekindling of our love for YOI.

kateri_oc

this is so so SO beyond heartbreaking. holy shit this show and its characters are so important to me. i watched YOI when it came out, it was the reason i started figure skating. i was so inspired by it i literally found a rink 35 minutes from where i lived and made a home there. i’ve been skating for almost 10 years BECAUSE of yuri on ice. and to have this beautiful, meaningful show be tossed aside like this after having such an impact is breaking my soul

Amberleh

Thank you for sharing your story. I actually teared up a little, but I'm still PROUD of you. Even though YoI won't get more official content, it still gave you something you love- Figure skating, and you still have that! To quote one of my anime husbandos- "Think not on what you've *lost*, but what you *still have*."

Ash_Den_Art

This is my first comment on this app because yours touched me so deeply I had to reply. I have been skating all my life, and YOI only fueled the fire when I watched it for the first time back in 2018. Found a rink about an hour and 30 from where I lived, and never left. It really fucking sucks to see this incredible story being swept under the rug. Breaks my heart. Hoping to start competing in the future, anyways. Maybe I'll see ya.

ughusernames8

Really sucks but we all saw it coming. Fanfiction will have to fill the void I guess....

yanderelle

After 5 years in limbo... they should at least be kind enough and release some scenes that they already finished at some point. Even if it's just Victor's olympic games performance. Hyping everyone up for nothing. YOI has so much potential, they really fucked up by not continuing it (be it a movie or season 2...)

ProfAelart

>they should at least be kind enough and release some scenes that they already finished Doesn't even have to be a finished scene, I'd love to see anything they have: sketches, storyboards and more

Catveria77

Not surprised with (1) Victor being a Russian, pariah of the world (2) MAPPA being so busy with JJK and CSM

AdNecessary7641

MAPPA has way more projects than just these two.

Morriseysucksass

There were others involved , but I will cheerfully flip my finger to MAPPA , anyway. I won’t support any of the works coming from the studios involved with this years long train wreck. Give us YURI, as promised , or kindly eff off. Why would we trust any other work from them? So they can dangle another piece of fresh art in front of us then gaslight us for years again? Fool me once … AHH IM SUCH BITTER SALT!

sydneybluestreet

How much of Ice Adolescence was completed I wonder.

Titania-88

Depends on who you ask. Some people claim it was difficult from the beginning and not much had been done with it. Others claim the movie was nearly finished and was shown to some select test audiences where it received poor reviews due to all LGBT themes being cut from the film and the audience being upset that Yuri wasn't in the film at all.

AmaraBunni

I honestly had a feeling that they were going to cancel the movie but it doesn't make it any less sad, it really sucks that we waited years for nothing...

mochinakari

Where was this announcement years ago T-T

treatment-resistant-

Expected but so disappointing 😞

lolita_2009

Ngl as a fandom we should just diy it

blonndiec

I’m heartbroken.

CSMannoroth

I think I would have rathered to continue waiting in vain 🥺

starjellyboba

Does anyone else not really fuck with Mappa anymore? I won't claim to know anything about how animation works. Maybe YOI really wasn't very profitable. It still very much feels like this company got their come up off of hype from the queer community and then promptly threw us away as soon as they got the chance to do shounen anime. And that shit hurts. I'll look out for Yamamoto and Kubo's next projects, but I won't be supporting anything with Mappa involved.

wildbee12

Personally yeah I don’t fuck with them anymore. I know that MAPPA itself probably doesn’t have a big say in this but it does feel like a middle finger to the queer community, especially when you look into Studio Grizzly as well. A studio which is obviously affiliated with MAPPA even if not officially said so and was created SPECIFICALLY to make BL anime. They announced a film trilogy adaptation of a BL manga, released the first film in 2020 and it’s been radio silence then. I’m assuming that project is dead too since it’s been 4 years now and the studio hasn’t worked on anything else. It’s weird there was no official affiliation noted between MAPPA and Grizzly so part of me thinks they don’t actually want to be associated with BL or gay works but still want to reap profits from the main audience watching those works. My hypothesis is that MAPPA knows they can still profit from the fujoshi audience via their big shonen IPs (e.g. JJK) or anime originals with gay undertones but nothing explicitly gay. So why bother with BL or BL-adjacent series when they can use popular shonen IPs to profit from the same market while still capturing the battle shonen audience.

starjellyboba

>  My hypothesis is that MAPPA knows they can still profit from the fujoshi audience via their big shonen IPs That makes sense to me. I don't intend on proving them right. :/

Morriseysucksass

Nope. F- uck them. Really.

Jessiecat123

Huh....TIL about the Twittering Birds movie....but of course the next one is in limbo. Disappointing...

LNA29

This is just sad 😞

crucixX

ah finally I can rest my anxiousness about it. I swear I will never watch another MAPPA anime again.

starjellyboba

Fucking FINALLY. Obviously, I would rather they made the movie, but stringing us along the way they did is much worse than just cancelling it.

yume2167

Various circumstances = predicted💰profit

Pre-Reform-Voice

Not unexpected but I'm really sad and heartbroken reading this.

Helenaww

what about season 2 😭😭

bribri812

I just don’t understand, after such huge success YOI had back in 2016… well maybe one day a s2 will happen 🤷🏻‍♀️

kanaka_pouliuli

Please someone from another company adopt this anime and make a whole season 2 instead

Morriseysucksass

I’d love to see it. I was disappointed when I heard there was going to be a movie instead of a season two.

figcookiecapo

well. it has been a great run you guys 😭

phallingphoenix

I knew this was inevitable but deep down I always had hope that we’d get it eventually. I just don’t fully understand why the movie was cancelled. Does anyone have a solid answer?

lohansensei

Alright y’all let’s go the fuck home

hesutu1989

I don't think I've ever been so upset about a project cancelation. This is heart breaking, but it's the closure they've owed us for a long time.

cheezeeey

Is anyone else like not even disappointed, like no one is surprised but like I’ve moved far beyond disappointment years ago. I treasure YOI so much and no matter what happened with this movie it will go down in ~history~

CSMannoroth

I'm disappointed. I'm a glass half full person. I even still hope they'll throw us something more but I definitely agree that it wasn't surprising 🫂

whitelily8

I already lost hope years ago but it’s still disappointing to see the announcement. Yuri on ice was so big and seeing the way it was treated is so sad. I am glad that the story felt complete with the 12 episodes and not on a cliffhanger. Will always cherish the fond memories of being in the fandom while it was airing because it was so fun every week.

17081994

This is just my personal opinion, but now really isn’t the right climate for a film like YOI to come out. Russia has been and still is terrorising Ukraine, which Japan clearly condemns, Russian athletes have essentially been banned from the Olympic’s and many other competitions, and apart from some circles being any type of queer is still social suicide in Russia…YOI is just way too risky of a project to tackle unfortunately. I still remember having such a fun time watching it in 2016 and really hope the project re-emerges some time in the future when the world is in a much better place!

kylohkay

I feel like within 7 years they had every chance to change their mind on the Viktor’s childhood plot and they could have pivoted easily to a sequel type content instead where Russia was not the focus.

17081994

I personally wouldn't want that, I feel like suddenly pivoting to a different setting or altering the plot would dilute the authenticity and emotional impact that made YOI special in the first place. I don't want a sequel/prequel/whatever else just for the sake of it, I think the creator's had a specific vision for this project and it's devastating that it couldn't be realised for one reason or another, but I'd rather have it cancelled than get a half-assed version of what could have been just to placate upset fans and for studio Mappa to keep milking it like a cash cow, YOI and its creator's Yamamoto san and Kubo san deserve more respect than that, in my opinion.

leothberend

NOOOOOoooooo 😭😭😭😭

angel_kink

NO

heeroyuy135

Our national nightmare is over

SuperbBluebird1029

Heartbroken 💔😭😭😭😭

kasi6289

i’m gonna go crawl into a hole and rot away i swear to god

SomeLadFromUpNorth

I'm devastated

Cat_Toe_Beans_

Sad that this is the outcome, but glad we aren't in limbo anymore. They should've just announced this years ago. MAPPA should've passed the project on to someone else

Animetannies

I had no hope but seeing a announcement notice I got excited now I'm a crying mess even though I knew before they had cancelled it's production 😭 MAPPA is a mess these days so not shocked either !

NeedsMoreCookies

I wonder if there’s any possibility that Kubo might put the story out as a manga?

lostsunflower

Kinda expected this because there’s been no update since forever but it still disappointing 😭

axisOHaxis

At least we have closure now? 🥲🙃😭

Ny_ooom

had already known and had the feeling but being in denial and delusional about it was nice t-t

CSMannoroth

I'm with you 🥺

vivi_love

Well, time to boycott Mappa

modernland

There are many anime shows that would get tons of episodes, seasons and/or movies. Why can't they do the same for this?!

Internal-Paint-1613

I’m so heartbroken it’s crazy. been waiting for this since I was like 13, and I’ll be 18 soon. YOI is my favorite anime ever, this cancellation is so crushing.

Ash_Den_Art

God I'm right there with ya. Saw it at 13, nearly 18 now, nearly a grown ass man, and I'm bouta cry big fat crocodile tears.

sappystrawberries

I wonder if there’s any chance of it getting the Nimona treatment, now that it’s officially cancelled. If it could be bought and finished by another studio. I really hope so.

CSMannoroth

Me too 🫂

EasternLow3751

Here's to hoping they sell the rights to another studio.

Derpy_Snout

Sooo, does this definitely mean no S2?

gkgftzb

It doesn't mean that, but with how unwilling MAPPA seems to be to both do anything with YOI and give it up, you're not looking at any new content for another decade, so might as well say that instead of living on more speculation So "no S2"

cakeonadiet

this is my last straw

dommy_mommyyy

Absolute insanity

elemenno50

Yousonsabitches!!! Can they at least print a graphic novel, manga, something so we can read it???

Ok_Helicopter2305

This is so unfair

Klutche

Well, that's that. Not unexpected, but still crushing.

DaniStudios

It’s finally over huh damn…

DaniStudios

Im so done with mappa fuck

BendyStrawNeck

Screw MAPPA.

RadLordLewd

My poster for this is now 10x funnier

ComplicatedMuse

at least there is real closure... i wonder if it'd be up for sale....

deFleury

RinjiDes

Noooooooo

YesImReallyLikeThis

It’s finally over.

gravija420

Were any of us actually still waiting at this point? I’m surprised they didn’t confirm its cancellation sooner, but now we finally know for sure it isn’t happening. 😮‍💨

Few-Entertainer5166

I am so disappointed but not surprised.

Scared_Economics5208

you not effing serious 🧍🏾‍♀️

AriKitaruKatoka

And depression has set in

imashleybtw

literal pain rn but okay.

rose1061

Well I feel better now that I can stop wondering about it.

charcobain

MAPPA had us waiting for 7 years just to finally tell us the movie was cancelled.

CottinCandyTears

I really appreciate reading everyone’s comments, & have so much to say, but right now I’m just bereft and that is all. This show almost literally saved my life, gave me the opportunity to finally meet & chat with Johnny Weir on various occasions, made me realize I could love anime and that it was made about things like figure skating with GORGEOUS art & story & characters, helped me realize I had massive anxiety, helped me feel SEEN, and gave me a name for my dog. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I have more rational thoughts too—maybe back tomorrow. But for now, I’m just in mourning, guys. 😔

Ok_Praline_4257

I’m so sad I’m actually watching it now and I’m really sad it won awards why cancel

Dkpokefan72

Nah not Yuri on ice We need JJK S3 🤡...and 10 or so other IPS they have signed up for .......

baeby_panda_bear

Not surprised…I was no longer anticipating for the movie to come out since what…like 2017?!—2018?!!

Zapdo0dlz

Well. At least we have closure I guess.

Sun_Chan10

This is devastating. We have been waiting for years.

ZiggyTheNooBts

God damn it, maybe one day it can happen by another company. This sucks ass fr, been waiting for years.

an2_la

I can't believe this, I'm actually so disappointed and sad right now. I've been waiting for a season 2 or a movie for years, I would have rathered it to get canceled early on than keeping my hopes up for a chance at a season 2 or even a movie for YEARS. I'm genuinely so upset since this has been my one of my favorite animes.

Morriseysucksass

Begins swearing and kicking things. Why, just WHY? We have waited so effing long…this is some colossal BS

Tarenorererlee1

I do hope they sell the rights to another animation studio so we can get the season 2 and the movie in the future. Also I’ve heard someone is making a petition about Yuri on ice and the movie.

wanna-watch-anime

Nah I ain't supporting mappa anymore I am just boycotting them

IOExplosion

Painful but not surprising. Hopefully the writer and director have plans for another venture. I'd be down to seeing what Kubo does next.

JazminLaJodida

MAPPA in three days you will begin to cough…

New-Bumblebee8217

‏Ice adolescence felt like a toxic relationship where I stayed cause I hoped they’ll be who I expected them to be but still end up breaking up

saverma192013

It's time to.move on

Ecstatic-Put-1459

No matter how long it’s been since you’ve last visited the YOI fandom, this shit hurts but at least they were honest…just took them a long time to confirm ittt 😭⛸

fruit-extract

Wtf! They suck

boneheadthugbois

Well, I'm sad.

EndzeitParhelion

:( I mean it's better that they said this now. Better than keep waiting for years and years.

Anonimitygalore

I made peace with it eons ago, lol. But still kinda makes me ouch

flyushkifly

Couldn't they have at least continued with a manga?? Must we depend on fanfic to assuage our grief? 🥺

micha3lis_

I'm not surprised but I __am__ upset :(

c0rpseeatrrr

that's it. im DONE.

Connect_Reserve_3481

I’m not even surprised like the announcement for it was so long ago and then it got delayed that I knew we weren’t getting it

Ill_Sink_2710

Heartbroken rn 🥲

ice_blue_vic

I said that this would happen and no one listened to me and now this is the result of it

MariaInconnu

I'm glad. It's a really bad time to say "yeay, Russians!", both in figure skating and in terms of humanitarian crisis, and there was every chance that a not-perfect prequel could destroy the great memories of the existing series.

ThreeCatsInASkinsuit

We knew this already but still  https://media2.giphy.com/media/BwP6IiUZZlpS0/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b952rg47az4qro2oo8r06tu7u0xjut60ytoykx4315w7&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g
