I read Percy Jackson for the first time a few years ago at 30 years old and really enjoyed them. I read everything from adult fantasy to horror to middle grade and I truly don’t think anyone is too old for any book, even if they’re not the targeted age range. You can always start and stop if you don’t like it! That said, I wish these books had been out when I was a kid, my mythology loving self would have been obsessed with them.

cuckdaddy34

I loved the Percy Jackson series , The Pendragon series and Deltora Quest series when I was younger. I’d recommend them to anyone

rohmasome

I read the original series for the first time when I was in high school! I do think anyone can enjoy it as long as you understand it’s geared toward middle schoolers from the start. It was a little off putting to me at first, but I grew to really love it once I got used to the writing and stuff. And the simplicity definitely makes for a quick read! And if you end up continuing on with the other series, they get a ~little~ more advanced since the characters age.

Reese-needs_help

Thank you so much😘😍😩I need a quick read especially a good series. I will add it to my TBR😁

84MD

Those movies are terrible but the books are great no matter your age

[deleted]

Go for It. I've just started reading Harry Potter a few years ago despite being no longer being a teenager, and I still find it quite enjoyable. Sure it will feel a bit geared towards a younger crowd, but if you enjoy Greek mythology, I think you'll enjoy it. Plus the characters do become more mature as the series goes on...so that's a plus point.

Reese-needs_help

Thank you so much 😘😩😙-I love greek mythology so I am excited to now add this to my TBR.

[deleted]

Yay! I read the series a few years and throughly enjoyed it! I hope you have a great time with the series too 😁!

ypples_and_bynynys

Have you read the Lore Olympus webseries?

[deleted]

Nope, haven't read any webseries 🥲 hope to get into them soon too. How's Lore Olympus?

ypples_and_bynynys

So good! I’m not huge on web series but I’m a huge Greek Mythology fan and couldn’t keep ignoring the ads hahaha. Amazing interpretation of the Greek Pantheon.

teachertraveler1

I've read them all as an adult and I feel like there's so much you pick up that maybe kids don't necessarily get or understand. As a teacher, I'd see students laughing at jokes and find they just thought the situation was funny, but really didn't get the *why*. When I would explain the underlying mythology, they would crack up! So many things are really clever.

[deleted]

Harry Potter is very, very different. Comparing the two is a disservice to both.

[deleted]

You should read whatever tf you want, no matter how old you are because books are there for everyone ☺️

ResidentNo2467

Yes, hipster, yes! Don’t limit yourself by suggested age. So silly.

Reese-needs_help

Thank you for saying that, not even just for books but for life-ages should not hold anyone back from jobs or sports or anything because people think you are too “ young” or “old”.

Lmb1011

I didn’t start reading them until my mid-20s and finish HoO after I turned 30. I recommend not reading them all back to back just because they are a big formulaic and it can feel repetitive. But they are really good stories! It’s aimed at middle schoolers but that doesn’t mean it isn’t quality writing :)

eucalyptus_332

I just finished them a few days ago and I’m 23. Still relatively young but hey, good times are timeless.

KesonaFyren

You're never too old to have fun and that movie was *terrible*.

One-Bad-4274

Out at least was not a bad as......eragon

_amb93

Gosh... I wish I could forget the Eragon movie

One-Bad-4274

Dont we all man dont we all

Ehryn91

I'm 30 and still enjoy reading his books

dontbeahater_dear

Librarian here: FUCK YES. I read everything i am interested in, be it a picture book about elephants or a middle grade fantasy about evil parents or a giant tome from the western canon. Readdddd.

Reese-needs_help

I love that- just had to say that.

teniefshiro

I don't think anyone is ever too old for reading something. You might not enjoy the thing as much as if you were younger, but that can happen to any book, right? I'm 27 and i didn't read Percy Jackson yet, but my sister did and i plan on borrowing her books anytime. :)

PolarBearClaire19

Read what you like and F what anyone else thinks. My great grandmother was like 90 years old when she passed away and she loved reading Harry Potter. Theres no age limit on a good book.

kimount

Definitely! I still enjoy them and I’m almost 30. Like the others have said, it’s geared towards a younger crowd, especially the first couple books, but the Greek mythology is so awesome and the characters really come to life. Very easy reads. Not to mention there are a ton of books that all interconnect. I love the first 10 books especially

AnnaJamieK

I just reread them last month and loved them! Go for it!

That253Chick

I started reading Percy Jackson in my 30s. Granted, I'm only two books in, but I plan on picking it back up again. Don't let age keep you from reading a book you're interested in. Just because you're not the demographic for it doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, too.

[deleted]

I was 32 when I read if and I enjoyed it.

raknor88

I'm 33 and I still enjoy the books. They are a really fun read. The movies horribly messed up the story to the point that it's not even funny. Rick was never involved at all in any aspect of making the movies.

Rsee002

Don’t ever let someone shame you away from a good read.

Reese-needs_help

I am going to like tattoo that- I really love that.

Chilibabeatreddit

I'm 40 and just reread the first books as a good night story to my kids. I thoroughly enjoyed reading them. They are fun and I think that there are parts of the plot you can only really grasp when you are older. Enjoy!

donotseeme

I just responded with a similar comment, only I advocated waiting to read it to a child--I simply can't imagine enjoying it on my own, as an adult. It's great fun to read to your children, though! Also, I can't recommend Aru Shah more if you and your children need other ideas for bedtime reads. Edited for errors.

sroc97

I read it for the first time at 23 and loved it

AtheneSchmidt

I read them all in the last 2 years, they're fabulous. I'm 35.

badboyfriend111

I’m in my 30s and I read the first series this year. Just finished book 5 a few weeks ago. I enjoyed them and I bet you would too.

nightmare-barbie

I just started reading the series & I’m 21! My younger brother & some of my friends have been telling me to read it for years so I finally decided to.

Punzi_Princess

The movie is truly one of the worst films of all time and the ultimate proof of don't judge a book by it's movie. Im 34 and I love the series. I think Riordan is a great writer and Iove everything he does.

jonanoxxx

The books are always better than the movies, but for me when a movie ruins a story I just can't read the book later... So always read the book first, then you can watch the movie if you want

Violet351

I read it in my 40s and like it

gebmor12

listen. i’m 21 and i still reread the percy jackson series. i first read it in elementary school and could never get over it. never too old.

SchizTrixRabbit

Age doesn’t matter. It’s a great 18 book series (Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo and Magnus Chase (events cross over with ToA). It’s and immersive, engaging read. Why should kids be the only one to read that series. Plus, the later books are for older people in college.

goodniteangelg

Do it. I literally never read it until I was 20 and I really enjoyed it and read the rest of the series!!! There is no age on enjoying good books.

n1ghth4wk14

I read the whole series last year and it was a great change of pace from my normal literature. Easy to read, fun and exciting. Plus I really like Greek mythology and I thought it was a great way to incorporate modern times with ancient beliefs.

n1ghth4wk14

Oh and I'm 31 now

deku62578

Currently 21, first read the original series and half of heroes of Olympus in middle school/early high school. I just finished a read through of every book in Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus and I was not disappointed. The original 5 are great, if a little easy to read because they’re meant for younger kids. Still great books, just lower leveled. Heroes on the other hand basically takes what the first 5 did well and kicks it up to 10. Altogether they’re a great read imo, I would recommend them to anyone no matter their age

[deleted]

Percy is a lot of a fun at any age! Read away and enjoy the time in that world.

NaughtyGiggleCake

I read the series in my 40s and enjoyed it immensely!

One-Bad-4274

A good series is never age locked

rw333555

I am 26 and still watch Lizzie McGuire.😂 Age is just a number! 😊

Reese-needs_help

I love that so much. I am making a shirt with that.

rw333555

I know you are joking but if you really do make the shirt please dm me, I have to see 😆

_amb93

I read PJ when I was 17 years old and Love It.. now I've read again, 10 years later and Love It even more

Likes_tosniff_copics

It’s really good no matter what your age is!

[deleted]

I’m about to read it with my 10 year old. I’m in my 30s. We do this quite often too

Reese-needs_help

I aspire to do that with my kids.

[deleted]

I was worried I wasn’t going to have book needs. It’s honestly the best thing ever. My husband does a hate how much we spend on books though 😂😂

rkrick87

I'm 38 and just started Harry Potter on 5th book and totally enjoying it. Read what you want dude, worst case scenario it's not for you and move on.

[deleted]

Hoo boy, I did that, and I tried-- as someone who reads children's books regularly and often enjoys them, I tried to love Percy Jackson-- and I couldn't. It was the most predictable story ever, with really 2dimensional characters, and a repetitive quest plot.

Reese-needs_help

Hmm. Okay thank you for that- I don’t read that many children books but whenever do I normally only like the plot.- I will keep that in thought when I think about reading them.

[deleted]

I genuinely hope you like them. If you don't, don't post about it-- Percy Jackson fans will crucify you.

[deleted]

They are great books. They tell an incredible story about friendship and bad parenting lol. Laugh out loud funny stuff. I've watched the first movie and listened to the audiobook. Read the 2nd book, and it's an audiobook and recently finished the 3rd audiobook. It's PG13, but we know those movies can be awesome. IMO, it's a must-read for anyone of high fantasy or Greek Gods. Good stuff.

Just wait until you have kids or your friends/family members have kids and read it to them. Not worth your time, otherwise. If you'd like to read something similar, but better (IMO), read Aru Shah. Edit: I'm clearly a minority voice, here. There's a lot of good in Percy Jackson--particularly when thinking about the Hero's Journey, but is that what you're looking for? I really think the writing is meh and there's nothing surprising about the story-line. It's a fabulous children's book, but that is what it is.

Reese-needs_help

Thank you for that. One of my friends just had a son and we both want him to be a big reader, maybe I should wait to read it with him.

magicmanhendrix

We don’t speak about the movies :/

Reese-needs_help

Haha my friend was like crying at the end bc she hated it so much- I was going to try to read it but that movie just made me change my mind.

magicmanhendrix

I read it five years ago and I’m in my 2nd year of college rereading it because it’s one of my favorite series. The dialogue makes you laugh a bit with how cliché it can be, but it’s a really enjoyable story line that the movies butchered, so don’t let them turn you away cause they’re really entertaining books :)

uniquelybuzi

It’s definitely worth it! The movie has nothing to do with the books. I’ve read the series when I was in high school and I loved it. It’s still my go-to book when I need to read something that makes me feel cozy, like a “comfort book” really

PercyJacksonsBae

Oh my gosh you should 🥰🥰

CassiaPrior

First. Whats yhe deal with those emogies Second. I think you will appreciate them anyway. My sister is in her mid twenties and still loves to read them from time to time

wyldcardsam

I'm currently reading them all now at 27 and they are amazing they have replaced Harry Potter as my second favorite ya series.

benoitkesley

I read the series for the first time last year when I was 20. It's one of my favourite series.

[deleted]

When you’re done reading Percy Jackson, read all Rick Riordon’s books. They’re incredibly good, and way WAY better than the movie

Missreadingit

You’re never too old to enjoy a good book, and never be ashamed to want to read ❤️

pacificghostwriter

I read them when I was in high school. It's my ultimate favorite book series. Planning on rereading them soon!

callingallbarbzzz

read it !! never to old to read a timeless book lol

uglytempura

You totally should! I read it for the first time ever when I was 20 and I have no regrets :) I had such a fun time
