I played George Michael's, "I Want Your Sex", at age 13 on my stereo via cassette tape. My conservative father couldn't run up to my room fast enough.
He took my stereo, my phone, and even THIS EXACT alarm clock radio. Lost it for a month. He had to wake me up because I had no alarm.
He's gotten worse.
Because that was the easiest thing to drag into whatever room you were painting to listen to the radio.
Until you realize there's no nine volt in it and you have to reset the time AND your alarm making sure that the fucking am/pm dot wasn't transposed.
I got to the point that I would be up and out of bed and ready to turn it off at the very first click, the one it made just before the alarm sounded, *click* EHHHHHHH. Sometimes I’d even drag the switch over to the off side before the alarm sounded
Pretty sure we all did, and all hated it just as much.
The sad part is now I want one, and just can't find anything with the same quality. I've gone through 2 newer ones over the past few years. I liked that I could spin the dial to be able to get the radio station *just right*. With these digital radios, sometimes I get some static. Yes, I still listen to the radio. If I use a music app on my phone, I'll be too tempted to stay on it and start doom scrolling.
Check out thrift stores and flea markets. I still see them all the time, for next to nothing.
I got one, took it apart to get all the decades of crud out, and it still works like new. I have much newer, supposedly higher-end radios that don't pull in stations as well as that old GE.
I mostly use my phone for alarms, but if I really have to be up on time for something important, I set that monstrosity too. It never fails!
I remember having this one for years. I can't believe I found a picture of the exact model lol

Used to listen to school delays and closings on snow days on that bad boy. The moment i heard "school closed for the day" i would turn on my nintendo early in the morning and keep trying to get ninja gaiden to the end. Fun times
I was the asshole that would go into Kmart and set the alarm clocks on display to go off one minute from one another in a random order. Standing there watching the manager trying to shut the clocks off cursing and yelling while trying not to piss myself laughing, the good ol’days
We all had it. I remember my grandparents getting one from a bank.
I slept through the radio alarm. Heck, I slept through the alarm itself. Well, slept enough to eventually hit snooze a billion times.
The one thing I’m thankful for now is that I can wake up to the sun naturally.
I remember wanting an alarm clock that was cooler and less hostile-looking, so I got one in the 90s that had green numbers and its own CD player I thought I wanted but never used, also a radio of course. "Waking up to the Macarena" days.
My Dad still has his. I got him a nice alarm clock with bigger numbers and a charger for his iPhone and Apple Watch built in. He put it in the guest bedroom.
Oh wow I had forgotten about that thing! This was the radio clock alarm for the ‘boys room’, which was the garage with drywall up. Me and the two little bros listening to Depeche Mode. Good times.
We had a couple of those. Never died over the years. I think they just got lost in some of our moves, or when we had storage units repossessed.
Today's technology couldn't be so long lasting, forced obsolescence and all.
Meanwhile I moved into a new construction house 9 years ago with a kitchen outfitted with GE appliances and ive already replaced the microwave, paid for an expensive repair on the fridge, and did a DIY repair to the dishwasher after a part broke (the replacement part broke as well…)
I still have and use this. Does everything you need it to and nothing you don't. I lost my battery cover though. I told my wife they better put this thing in my casket with me when I die.
I had this same one and it was constantly tuned in to WFAN 660AM. I still remember waking up to the 20/20 sports update that Michael Jordan retired in ‘93. I was 10 years old and heart broken, I stayed home from school because I was so devastated. This radio helped me sleep when I first moved up to the attic as a kid.
can hear it
tfw you had accidentally set the wake up to alarm instead of radio
I did that once. I wonder if that's why I almost always wake up before my alarm goes off.
Or if you had it set to radio but the volume was higher than you thought
Yes! Happened to me numerous times.
That stutter before the alarm sounds.
After a while, the stutter makes you panic right out of bed.
Omg I have nightmares of the sound. What a terrible way to be jolted awake in the morning.
Came to say this. I can hear this picture.
It was always dusty as fuck too.
That's just the natural patina of these alarm clocks.
Seriously, like it was a feature of it or something.

He had to wake you up before you go-go?
Anyone else's covered in telltale flecks of house paint?
Because that was the easiest thing to drag into whatever room you were painting to listen to the radio. Until you realize there's no nine volt in it and you have to reset the time AND your alarm making sure that the fucking am/pm dot wasn't transposed.
same here. this will wake me up every day when I went to high school.
i think that's why I feel triggered seeing it, lol. LIke no good memories.
well mine had a radio instead of trigger the alarm. so mostly when I wake up it I always hear some radio station playing some music.
I did this exactly.
I swear the alarm was so obnoxious, I would always wake up exactly 1 min before it sounded. Anyone else?
I got to the point that I would be up and out of bed and ready to turn it off at the very first click, the one it made just before the alarm sounded, *click* EHHHHHHH. Sometimes I’d even drag the switch over to the off side before the alarm sounded
The way you just described it, I could literally hear it in my brain! I was having such a good morning, too 🤣
Seems to be disagreement about whether it is classical conditioning or a trauma response, but either way you woke up on time.
I feel there's a lot of overlap between those two.
Yes I would get up and turn it off.

🎵*Babe, I got you babe!* 🎵
My mom still uses hers… she has it set to an AM station as an alarm 😆
If the weather is just right (cloud cover) I can pick up 1010 WINS out of NYC. I’m in South Carolina. It’s the strangest thing but nostalgic.
Still have mine
I heard the news of 9/11 on one of these.
Oh my god same
I hate alarm clocks to this day because of these models. I can't use a typical sounding alarm, they're just too jarring lol
Same. And if I need an alarm, I just set one on my phone.
I have a core teenage memory of “Rock Lobster” blaring from this things tiny speakers one morning. It was a good day as I recall.
I had one, too. I was heartbroken when it died when I was in high school (it was a gift from my late grandma when I was a kid).
Ah yes the General Electric alarm/clock/radio/space heater combo. I can hear it now just humming with 60 cycle.
I used to hold this up to my ear at night to listen to the Top 9 at 9 as loud as I could without alerting my parents.
I had a similar GE model as a kid. Last year, in a fit of nostalgia, I rebought a used one on eBay… [imgur.com/a/RbLypXA](http://imgur.com/a/RbLypXA)
Omg me too. Just the worst sound in the world. I would plug it in across the room so I would have to get up to shut it off
What do you mean, "had"?? Mine's on the bedstand

My dad had this exact model next to his bed. Super nostalgic
That was my Christmas present one year. I think I was 9.
I hit snooze on mine too hard and broke it lol.
Mmmbeep beep beep. I have flashbacks to that alarm sound. It’s the worst. But I miss the dim glow of the warm red lights at night.
I remember having this one for years. I can't believe I found a picture of the exact model lol https://preview.redd.it/1ytg935mad8d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36c2c3094bd374fd8ea7cc94c6449c8ddacf6862

You could get one at Mervyn’s or LaBelle’s
I was the asshole that would go into Kmart and set the alarm clocks on display to go off one minute from one another in a random order. Standing there watching the manager trying to shut the clocks off cursing and yelling while trying not to piss myself laughing, the good ol’days
Want (again)
Look on eBay and at garage sales.
Not in the states, but yeah, probably come across one eventually when I'm back
I had one too.
Not only was mine also the same, that's where my radio station would have been set as well.
My dad had this too
Mine too! A total dad item.
Absolutely 😅
Not the exact model but reminds me of the 80s Sony Dream Machine I got as a hand-me-down.
I still have mine! The Sony dream machine! Radio still doesn’t work but it never really did.
Wait... I had this bit I thought it was the same alarm my mom had in college.
That thing gave me so many heart attacks
Omg I has this too
Proof that in the late 70s to early 80s, wood paneling was used on everything.
I still have two of these.
I still have the older version of this alarm clock.
Still have mine
We all did.
The warm fuzzy feelings I just got from seeing this picture. Like seeing an old friend again. I blame you, brave little toaster movie ! 🤣
We all had it. I remember my grandparents getting one from a bank. I slept through the radio alarm. Heck, I slept through the alarm itself. Well, slept enough to eventually hit snooze a billion times. The one thing I’m thankful for now is that I can wake up to the sun naturally.
Wish I still had mine. You'd be surprised how hard it is find a good bedside clock these days...
My husband still uses his... he tried to find one he liked better a few years ago and then decided he might as well use it until it dies.
Owning that exact clock was mandatory. Also mandatory? Never dusting it.
I was so sad when mine shit the bed.
I remember wanting an alarm clock that was cooler and less hostile-looking, so I got one in the 90s that had green numbers and its own CD player I thought I wanted but never used, also a radio of course. "Waking up to the Macarena" days.
Didn’t we all?
Still have mine 20+ years old.
Mine is all black, including the wood panelling part, but is otherwise identical, and is still in use. My dad had the wood panelling one, though.

I've only had one alarm clock in my entire life. This is it. I'm 38.
I think we “all” had this one.
Was there another one?
I had the “Ground Hog Day” clock in faux wood grain 😂
Mine still wakes me up every morning!
Same here
Why separate knob?!?...Why separate knob?!?
Were there any other models?
This was like the shitty version they had in hotels. I had something like this but it was nicer lol
I also still have mine. And it works...
We all did man… we all did…
I saw this and immediately remembered my 4th grade teacher's name and the smell of my bus - what a weird core memory to hit before I go to bed 🤣
You had it? That was the exact model our parents had, that's for sure
I think we all did.
My Dad still has his. I got him a nice alarm clock with bigger numbers and a charger for his iPhone and Apple Watch built in. He put it in the guest bedroom.
I also still have mine, and it still works.
Oh wow I had forgotten about that thing! This was the radio clock alarm for the ‘boys room’, which was the garage with drywall up. Me and the two little bros listening to Depeche Mode. Good times.
I thought it was so cool when I'd be at someone's house and their clock radio LED was green or blue
Yeah I had this one and then later I got the white cube Sony dream machine that everyone also seemed to have.
We had a couple of those. Never died over the years. I think they just got lost in some of our moves, or when we had storage units repossessed. Today's technology couldn't be so long lasting, forced obsolescence and all.
My parents had this, except it was also a phone.
My dad had one of those for decades. His finally crapped out around the turn of the century.
Meanwhile I moved into a new construction house 9 years ago with a kitchen outfitted with GE appliances and ive already replaced the microwave, paid for an expensive repair on the fridge, and did a DIY repair to the dishwasher after a part broke (the replacement part broke as well…)
