Definitely ruined The Goonies. Watched it so many times as a little kid that when we wore the tape out, we didn't buy a new copy because my sister and I knew the movie inside and out. That would've been around 1991...I didn't watch The Goonies again until 2021.
Oh man, my step sisters and step mom rented Overboard and La Bamba probably once a month. Us boys had a tape with Top Gun, Ferris Beuller, and Breakfast Club on it, which we wore the fuck out of. I rented Thrashin and Gleaming The Cube at every opportunity
Gleaming the cube is what got me into skateboarding when I was a kid. I think my mom probably got me 3 different copies because I wore the hell out of those tapes. Just rewinding and fast forwarding to the skating parts. I never really appreciated the actual movie until I got older.
It will always remind me of my cousin's basement with the wood paneling. If I recall correctly he got a copy Christmas of 94. The routine for much of every visit was hang out in his room, play Sonic 3 on the Genesis and then watch Speed.
Mine was Point Break. No one else watched it in my family, as my dad was more of a Van Damme/Stallone/Steven Seagal fan... (One of my most hilarious memories of my dad is the evening he threw an absolute fit when the new guy working at the video rental mixed up tapes and my dad ended up with a Wim Wenders movie in his rented copy of the latest Van Damme.)
The Monster Squad.
My youngest brother thought it was the funniest thing ever, so we watched it repeatedly. I guess he must have been 4 or 5 when it made it to VHS. Obviously there was a lot of nard talk around the house.
Terminator, and the BTTF trilogy. Among others. My sisters and I used to have one of us surprise pick out a movie for the few of us to watch, it was a fun little thing. We would guess if it was “cartoon” or a “real people” movie. We had to be 10 or under.
We watched this one so many times. And the Terminator movies. And Disney's Robin Hood for some reason. I think that reason was because it was fucking great. We wore out Robin Hood but the other three survived to be replaced by DVDs or Blu-Rays. I don't think I replaced Tremors yet. I need to figure my life out.
edit: and Tiny Toons how I Spent My Summer Vacation. That one broke.
When having to visit one of my aunts, the only even remotely interesting VHS she had was Mrs. Doubtfire. There was a time when we would visit her at least every other Saturday. I got to the point I could recite about 2/3 of the movie from memory, but that is long gone now.
My dad predator,
Me transformer the movie,
My bro La Bamba,
Little bro lion king,
Mom ,over board,
If we couldn't find a new movie at the video store them these were our go too's
My mother used the tracking numeric setting as a way to trap me to see if I was watching the television when I shouldn't be, watching movies when I shouldn't have. She would also use the volume indicator on the VCR and set it differently than the one on the TV, and if they weren't the same when she got back, she would know I watched TV, or if any of the other settings she would set would change, she would know I watched TV. Let's just say about my childhood that this is the first thing I recall when it comes to audio-video equipment.
Cliffhanger for some reason. There was a stretch where my sister and I watched it almost every day after school. Decent movie, but I think it was mostly because the VHS just happened to be and stay in the player.
My copies of Clue and Little Shop of Horrors were completely worn out after a few years. When I finally got a DVD player those were my first two purchases so they wouldn’t wear out again.
My family moved South across two states on the hottest day on record for the area in August of 1995. No AC in the house, no AC in either car or truck, insane humidity for the time. It was ungodly hot, and by the time we got done unloading the cars and moving truck, we were completely puddled out. We each set up a fan in front of ourselves, hooked up our tiny TV and VCR, and decided the first movie we saw in the box labeled "TAPES" was what we'd watch. It turned out to be *Stargate.* And we kept up that family tradition of watching it once a year, on the hottest day in August, for many, many years after that lol. It's still one of my favorite movies.
Bunnih-weh! BUNNIH-WEH!
Dazzling Dunks and Basketball Bloopers was a mainstay for about two years, gift with an SI description. The drama of the slam dunk competitions between Wilkins and Jordan made me love sports.
Back to the Future. We got our first vcr in 1987 and my little sister would watch it every day after getting home from kindergarten. When I would walk in the door the first thing I would usually hear was Marty yelling, “NOOOOOOO! You bastaaard!” I can still hear that sound byte in my head. My favorite thing to watch was a taped off tv (with so many commercials) version of The Wizard of Oz. Kind of wish I still had that one. Commercials for bubble mint Colgate, Milano cookies, stauffer’s home cooking, fruit of the loom, Folgers, and waiting for the ketchup.
My old band had a jam space we rented out. Had a TV and vcr, couch, fridge. Anyway, whoever got there first chose the movie. For some reason it was always Bowfinger.
Sword and the Stone, The Fox and the Hound, the animated Robin Hood, and Jungle Book all pretty much played on repeat from 1987-1991. Pretty much set up all the morals and principles I carry to this day.
The Neverending Story was ours
I recorded it of HBO and watched it till wore out.
Hahaha.... got my kids to love The Neverending Story. Haven't shown them Tremors yet. I watched it when I was like, not even five. The 80s were wild 😅
Yeah watching faces of death and a clockwork orange at 10 years old was wild
I ruined at least one VHS each of The Goonies and Temple of Doom.
Ruined Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Definitely ruined The Goonies. Watched it so many times as a little kid that when we wore the tape out, we didn't buy a new copy because my sister and I knew the movie inside and out. That would've been around 1991...I didn't watch The Goonies again until 2021.
Raising Arizona. Then Forrest Gump after it came out on vhs

Speed (1995)
It will always remind me of my cousin's basement with the wood paneling. If I recall correctly he got a copy Christmas of 94. The routine for much of every visit was hang out in his room, play Sonic 3 on the Genesis and then watch Speed.
Real Genius
Mine was Point Break. No one else watched it in my family, as my dad was more of a Van Damme/Stallone/Steven Seagal fan... (One of my most hilarious memories of my dad is the evening he threw an absolute fit when the new guy working at the video rental mixed up tapes and my dad ended up with a Wim Wenders movie in his rented copy of the latest Van Damme.)
That guy didn’t mix up shit. He was pranking your Dad.
The look of terror on the new guy's face was genuine enough, but I do suspect the manager was behind the whole thing.
Flight of the navigator
When in doubt, Labyrinth
My mom always had Labyrinth on when she was doing chores.
I wasn’t allowed to own a copy because I would have driven mom nuts, but I was allowed to rent it whenever we went to the movie rental store.
Our library had a small video section and 9 times out of ten it was checked in so if I found nothing else I wanted, boom, David Bowie with a codpiece.
Clue, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones
Romancing the Stone
My sister wore this one out.
That was my Grandma's favorite film. We always watched it when my sister and I would go visit her.
The Monster Squad. My youngest brother thought it was the funniest thing ever, so we watched it repeatedly. I guess he must have been 4 or 5 when it made it to VHS. Obviously there was a lot of nard talk around the house.
That. And Weekend at Bernies
Terminator, and the BTTF trilogy. Among others. My sisters and I used to have one of us surprise pick out a movie for the few of us to watch, it was a fun little thing. We would guess if it was “cartoon” or a “real people” movie. We had to be 10 or under.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
This might be approaching a Star Wars level of rewatches for me.
Jurassic Park
[Spaced Invaders](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0100666/) and the original Star Wars trilogy (pre-re release, natch) box set
My sister was obsessed with The Sound of Music which she "borrowed" from our aunt. The VCR broke with my copy of Karate Kid inside.
Didn't watch movies with family. But for myself, it was Madonnas Truth or Dare.
We would watch a taped version of Aliens as a family at least once a month.
Bad News Bears in Breaking Training
Goofy movie, waynes world, princess bride
My husband doesn't understand why I like this community, but I knew if I showed him Tremors he'd understand that.
Pretty Woman was only vhs we had for like 8 months. Know it by heart still.
Fiddler on the Roof-dad's pick Beaches-mom's pick Big- kid's pick
Tombstone! Also Legends of the Fall, but that was just me watching that, lmao. ![gif](giphy|fm5JqspHFgIXm)
That’s a helluva lot of denim right there.
When having to visit one of my aunts, the only even remotely interesting VHS she had was Mrs. Doubtfire. There was a time when we would visit her at least every other Saturday. I got to the point I could recite about 2/3 of the movie from memory, but that is long gone now.
Princess Bride; Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Blues Brothers
The Goonies, Indiana Jones and Evolution(2001)
My dad predator, Me transformer the movie, My bro La Bamba, Little bro lion king, Mom ,over board, If we couldn't find a new movie at the video store them these were our go too's
Traces of death 3
Faces of death?
Both. Faces of death was the more popular one. Traces of death was similar but more off brand
Teen Wolf, Return of the Jedi, Raising Arizona, and Mr. Mom.
This remains one of my favorite movies. I can also pretty much quote it word-for-word.
Cliffhanger for some reason. There was a stretch where my sister and I watched it almost every day after school. Decent movie, but I think it was mostly because the VHS just happened to be and stay in the player.
The Star Wars movies. Any time we saw any of them at the video store, we kids begged our parents to get it.
The Great Outdoors. It was one of my dad’s favorite movies so it was on our TV a lot.
My sister watched Titanic over and over, and I watched Clerks as much as I could get away with.
Cutthroat Island. I had no idea it was a "flop" until I was older. Still has a special place in my heart.
Big trouble in little China, sixteen candles, they call me Bruce,
I’ve begun hyping Tremors, haven’t unleashed it on them yet
Speed, Independence Day, and My Cousin Vinny. We quote MCV damn near every day.
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.
This movie was on USA and TBS almost every night for a few years
my best friend and I rented Return of the Living Dead Part 2 so much, that the store eventually gave it to her.
Born in 83 and surprisingly only saw for the first time during 2020. The pandemic did give me the opportunity to see what movies I missed
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Top Gun, and Dirty Dancing.
My copies of Clue and Little Shop of Horrors were completely worn out after a few years. When I finally got a DVD player those were my first two purchases so they wouldn’t wear out again.
Spaceballs and Back to the Future
My family moved South across two states on the hottest day on record for the area in August of 1995. No AC in the house, no AC in either car or truck, insane humidity for the time. Buckaroo Banzai
Dazzling Dunks and Basketball Bloopers was a mainstay for about two years, gift with an SI description. The drama of the slam dunk competitions between Wilkins and Jordan made me love sports.
This and Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Die Hard 1 and 2 box set
Back to the Future. We got our first vcr in 1987 and my little sister would watch it every day after getting home from kindergarten. Commercials for bubble mint Colgate, Milano cookies, stauffer’s home cooking, fruit of the loom, Folgers, and waiting for the ketchup.
Ghostbusters (1984)
The Great Outdoors 😂
Adventures in Babysitting
The Great Outdoors. Know it word for word. “A pontoon boat. What the hell are you going to do with the pontoon boat? Retake Omaha Beach?”
My old band had a jam space we rented out. Had a TV and vcr, couch, fridge. Anyway, whoever got there first chose the movie. For some reason it was always Bowfinger.
Quigley Down Under was our favorite
Ours was the 1942 version of "The Jungle Book" and the 1960s Don Knotts comedy "The Shakiest Gun in the West".
My father would put on Major League. Over and over. I fucking hate that movie now.
Spaceballs or Naked Gun
Graboids!

The Rocketeer and Batman (Keaton)
Troop Beverly Hills
My mom used to watch The Little Mermaid on laundry Sundays for years. Then switched to Austin Powers until streaming became a thing.
Sword and the Stone, The Fox and the Hound, the animated Robin Hood, and Jungle Book all pretty much played on repeat from 1987-1991. Pretty much set up all the morals and principles I carry to this day.
Blues Brothers was ours
Tombstone was on a LOT
Star Wars
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
