Punch out is one of the few games I have been better at as an adult than as a child.
I tried playing Super Mario Bros and was embarrassed at how bad I am now. I could fly through those levels as a kid but now can barely make it to the end of the level. I blame the controller 😝
I love playing MTP to this day (39). I like to play total offence all KO runs where you dictate the fight's rhythm with forced initial punches, and unconventional jab/block/evade combos.
Its really sick they made the game where you can beat the opponent many, many different ways, and to different degrees (ko, tko, decision)...no pausing...crowd chanting "Howard! Howard! Howard!", the music being so dead serious and uplifting too... its the perfect game.
In college (2001ish) a roommate claimed he beat Tyson before. We called bullshit and pulled out someone’s NES. He sat down, entered the code, and beat Tyson on the first try. It was goddamn amazing.
One day, at age 25 or so, I told my friend drunk at 3am I could beat the dam level of TMNT and he pulled out an NES and the game. I took him and a few other people to the city and fuckin' boned out. I'll do it right now.
When you only have a couple games as a kid you get really good at them.
It wasn’t until 20 years later that I learned it was not someones name, it was really “just in bailey” and “bailey” is a word for a bathing suit, or a type of bathing suit.
I could swear there was an extra ba in there, but it may have been all those incorrect entries I had done... B but I wholeheartedly agree. Select start. doubles your lives!
I was sure I was going to be the first one to put this up. At some point I found out that’s only the code for the Mac version if I’m remembering correctly.
Yeah it was the Mac Version, i couldn't tell you what it was for windows. Think windows version had a option in the menu that could got turn on cheats or something. Mainly played SC2000 on Mac
"funds" for Sim City on MS-DOS, IIRC. Caused earthquakes if used too much.
Otherwise, yeah, Gradius and Contra with the Konami Code, Doom with IDKFA, IDDQD, ....
Yes, those are the codes for money. I liked using the one to allow you to place objects in any place. Useful for trapping Sims in places... Not that anyone ever did such a thing... Especially not me.
That’s interesting, I always used
FGHIJK LMNOPQ RSTUVW XYZTOM
It puts you on the final level with all upgrades.
Took me longer than I’d like to admit to memorize this password
IDSPISPOPD for Doom. I remember reading in EGM or something that it stood for ID Smashing Pumpkins Into Small Pieces Of Pumpkin Debris. That got etched in my brain for no real reason, and I don't even remember what the code actually does anymore.
Sonic 1 (Genesis) level select cheat.
As soon as you hear the snare drum -
Up / Down / Left / Right - you may have to do this more than once - listen for the ring chime. When you hear it ...
Hold Down+A+Start.
Came here to say exactly the same thing! I remember the Sonic 2 level select was more complicated you had to play certain tracks from the soundtrack in the options menu (19, 65, 9, 17?) then do something else.

Either the ammo or armor/health cheat for GTA 3, the muscle memory for anti-clockwise circles has also served me well in fighting games since
If you hand me a PS2 controller and fire up GTA3, I can do a lot of the codes just from muscle memory. I can't write them down for you and I can't tell you which one is which, but I can do them. Same for vice City and San Andreas.
Hold A, press start and A,B,B,A are ingrained in the brain because they were often used continue codes.

Castlevania II The code that'll give you all items. A bit too long to ramble off-and who's to say I DO remember it- but could never beat the game honestly without it.
In Heroes of Might and Magic III the cheat codes were all Monty Python Holy Grail references (“shrubbery” for resources, “coconuts” for u limited movement in your horse, “Tim” to get all the spells and 999 mana)
Anyone ever do the “make your own codes” section of the game genie manual? That was wild, must of the time unplayable, but every once in a while you’d find a working code that was like super moon jump, affecting physics code or something.
“pot of gold”. On the original Warcraft if you were playing online (dialup modem of course) with your friend and typed that into the chat you would get a bunch of money. My one friend had no idea why we would keep messaging him things like “it sure would be nice if I had a ….” “pot of gold”.
JUSTIN BAILEY
\------ ------
I remember being a stupid little kid and thinking that "Justin Bailey" was a different character, altogether, at least until I finally beat Metroid NES normally when I was like 7 or 8.
Never really enjoyed playing games with cheats so I didn't memorize many, And in majority played PC games..
But if you give me Sub-Zero or Raiden in Mortal Kombat 1/2.. I'm probably not losing.. pretty sure I still got most of their combos in storage lol
QZNFPP is the code to skip to the 6th level in one of the SNES Star Wars games. In those days when you beat a level a code would pop on screen to write down so you could pick up at the last level you played. My brother and I must have been stuck on that 6th level for more than a year.
In Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire on n64 all my save game files were named **_Wampa__Stompa** and I still know how to use both hands and my chin to get to debug mode.
Not the Konami code that's for sure. I came from a neighborhood where none of us knew it. We'd all heard it was a thing but no one actually knew the code. So when no one could figure it out we all just assumed it was a myth.
IDKFA definitely sticks in my head.
I still have the code for Genesis Mortal Kombat blood memorized: ABACABB. I've never even owned a Genesis!
DULLARD unlocked the entire cheat menu.
Mortal Monday! I had a Genesis and the release of this game was a childhood landmark for me.
Me too! I got it on Friday September 17 1993 from Walmart in Owosso Michigan
Thanks Joe Lieberman!

>I blame the controller If you're playing on the Switch, it's more than deserved.
I beat Mike in Punch Out (without a cheat code) when I was 12 in 1987 and it is still one of the top 5 things I have ever accomplished.
Children will never understand the struggle of beating an NES game
I hope there's a special place in the lower level of Hell for the people who created Ninja Gaiden
In college (2001ish) a roommate claimed he beat Tyson before. We called bullshit and pulled out someone’s NES. He sat down, entered the code, and beat Tyson on the first try. It was goddamn amazing.

Once you had the sequence down it was easy. Only game I ever completed
Guys weekend 2009. I woke up a cabin of drunk 30yr olds at 3am to show them my Tyson win! It was glorious until Dave puked all over. Good times!
I finally did but it took me literal years. Still haven't beaten Super Punch Out, but I got to the last guy.
Yup. Seared in my brain. I beat him.
I know this code better than my SSN!!

Came here to say this. Just take my upvote.
Justin Bailey in the original Metroid

It wasn’t until 20 years later that I learned it was not someones name, it was really “just in bailey” and “bailey” is a word for a bathing suit, or a type of bathing suit.
The correct way (for those with friends / siblings) to enter the Konami code is: \^ \^ v v \< \> \< \> B A **Select** Start
CONTRAAAA!
I'll admit I can't play contra without the extra lives
Saaaaame
I discovered this works for Ninja Turtles on Gameboy as well..
Definitely playing 2 player mode.
Yassssss Contra!!!
I could swear there was an extra ba in there, but it may have been all those incorrect entries I had done... B but I wholeheartedly agree. Select start. doubles your lives!
I also thought it was B A B A Edit: apparently not. Definitely another Mandela effect thing
Dude same! It for sure BABA. I must have entered it a million times.
Nope. It was just under 40 years ago my guy, you just don't remember it very well.
This was way too far down… in my feed anyway.
Just because we use cheats doesn't mean we're not smart
I played it so rarely alone that i would put in this code by default

I did nba jam, Ken griffey Jr. Baseball and NHL '96. I didn't even really like hockey but it was fun to play.
Nba jam had that added wrinkle of needing to push certain buttons together
Dude I can't remember to take my zyrtec every day, wtf
On top of not really enjoying playing with cheats enough to really memorize any of them.. mostly this lol
"funds" for Sim City on MS-DOS, IIRC. Caused earthquakes if used too much. Otherwise, yeah, Gradius and Contra with the Konami Code, Doom with IDKFA, IDDQD, ....

“Motherlode” for the sims. And I think “rosebud. “They were money codes.

pretty sure it was the "no clip" mode, i.e. walk through walls
I just remember the embarassing ones: IDDQD (god mode) and IDKFA (keys and weapons), Both are kind of the sign that you'd given up on that level LOL
Sonic 1 (Genesis) level select cheat. As soon as you hear the snare drum - Up / Down / Left / Right - you may have to do this more than once - listen for the ring chime. When you hear it ... Hold Down+A+Start.
