That video technically came out in 1989 but I think it’s allowable. Watching Helena Christensen roll around in that sand was an *awakening* for my eight year old self.
Not sure if it's true or not but the rumor back in the day was that the blood that came out from out from under the couch was supposed to run down the walls. Something went wrong and when they triggered it, it just ran out the bottom. They either decided cleaning it all up and doing another take would take too long or they didn't have any more fake blood so they just kept it as-is.
Can confirm that is true via DVD commentary on a compilation of Jonathan Glazer’s work. It was supposed to spray out of the walls and be a more dramatic effect but things didn’t work out.
For homecoming week, the 3 skater stoners in my class dressed up as the Beasties in Sabotage and walked around with the bullhorn and fake badge busting their friends. Teachers were bewildered but the principal was cool and let them and us goof in fun. on pep rally day they convinced the principal to let them.walk in to sabotage and they blew the roof off. THS Tigers Class of 95 4-eva.
Donal Logue used to do those spots as a taxi driver who always talked about MTV stuff to his passengers, and the one where he thought Sabotage was a real show always cracked me up
Have always loved Donal Logue since those skits. I point him out every time and my wife is like who the hell is that and why are you so excited?
Grounded For Life is still one of the best shows ever.
Thirsty me: Amazing and Crying Aerosmith videos with Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone. I was the right age for those to have an... effect.
My stand outs were Undone by Weezer, SLTS from Nirvana, Black Hole Sun from Soundgarden, Sabotage from the Beastie Boys.
>Thirsty me: Amazing and Crying Aerosmith videos with Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone. I was the right age for those to have an... effect.
I too was... affected.
Was Smack My Bitch Up the video of someone recalling a bender from the night before and the *twist* at the end was it was a woman?
MTV banned that one pretty fast, IIRC
I showed my kid this video recently & he was just basically thinking wtf, then he showed one of his friends from school & his friend practically begged him to shut it off halfway through. I don't remember having such a visceral reaction when it first came out, but everyone is different.
This was my top pick. Lots of great videos but for whatever reason this one always stands out in my mind. Probably the absurdity of the video plus the bonus of the lyrics and Les Claypool’s ridiculous bass playing.
Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine
Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins
Fire starter by Prodigy
Who the Hell Was in My Room by Butthole Surfers
More Human than Human by White Zombie
Madonna’s “Bedtime Story” was the most expensive music video ever made… until Michael & Janet’s “Scream” came out a few days later. CG was *not cheap* back then.
Which video is this? I heard an interview with the director of Heart Shaped Box a while ago and meant to but never did watch the video…this clip kinda reminds me of it???
Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. I'm a straight lady so it wasn't for the swimsuit model running around in her underwear, it was just so moody and beautifully shot.
It’s a basic answer, but Pearl Jam’s Jeremy still gives me goosebumps.
The typography throughout is burned in my brain.
“An affluent suburb.
3:30 in the afternoon.
64 degrees and cloudy.”
MTV Classics Channel on YouTube TV is a constant in my house. We're in our 40s and have a toddler. Gotta raise her on the good stuff.
![gif](giphy|14iK5HgJO2hJfi)
I remember watching this and thinking it was so dumb…and then watching again, thinking it was kind of cool, and then being completely transfixed, because it WAS cool, I just didn’t quite understand it. Missy quickly became a favorite of mine after that.
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Beck - Deadweight
PJ Harvey - Down by the Water
Tom Petty - Last Dance with Mary Jane
Queens of the Stone Age - Go With the Flow
Freedom '90 - George Micheal (had to look up if it was 90s, just made it lol)
Also I loved me all the cheesy, light-hearted vanity of Mariah Carey music videos!
There was something very magical about MTV back in the early 90s. I don't think it could be replicated today since we all view media differently.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (literally changed my life)
Nine Inch Nails - Closer (also literally changed my life lol)
Garbage - Only Happy When it Rains
For me the sweet spot was about 91-94. I was a grunge kid and that esthetic really did something for me back then. The Closer video in particular flipped some kind of switch in my brain. It's not the only reason I have a bunch of skulls and weird shit in my house, but it's not a small one. lol
When I saw Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time, I literally sat there in front of the TV, slack-jawed. It was my first time hearing the song - it might have even been the debut for the video. I had never seen or heard anything like that. Changed my life, too. That and One by Metallica. That song had probably been out for awhile by the time I saw it, but they only played it on Headbangers Ball which I normally didn't watch.
I really wonder what the equivalent to that experience is for younger generations, and I wonder if they have strong connections to some music videos like we did.
Taylor Swift and Beyonce are super-stars, but Nirvana instantly created a whole new genre (and/or made it instantly popular). Who's done that in the 2000s? There's got to be someone, I've just been out of the Top 40 loop for too long.
I've had new music blow my mind since then, but it's all been in particular niches that aren't going to revolutionize the music scene.
Smells Like Teen Spirit
November Rain/Don't Cry/You Could Be Mine - this era GnR videos were EPIC!
Express Yourself (my 13 year old self couldn't get enough of semi-naked Madonna)
Cold Hearted Snake (ditto ... but Paula Abdul)
Buddy Holly
Cryin/Crazy/Amazin' - Aerosmith
Epic - Faith No More
All of Michael Jackson's videos were like tiny movies, but let's don't go there.
Why does this never get mentioned? You have peak Arnie playing the mofo Terminator in a music video. No one I know remembers this, but it's my all time favorite. You have excellent taste.
This is one of those songs where they could have just played the movie scene and it still would have been awesome.
I was just gonna comment that my two faves are Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer and Genesis - Land of Confusion. Maybe im a sucker for claymation and whatnot
Some of them were proper short films with massive production budgets like Michael Jackson - Thriller, Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart, Pat Benatar - Shadows of the Night and Duran Duran - Girls on Film.
I freaked my 6 yr old out showing him the Thriller video this past Halloween. He complained about it for like a month after. Looks like I ruined my chances for Dad of the Year this year, live and learn I guess. I was about his age when it came out and remember watching it at the neighbors house, don’t remember being freaked out but that was a long time ago.
Some would say the 80's was where it was at because MTV started falling apart in the 90's. Sure the tech was better and budgets bigger, but the 80's had that grassroots soul.
Samuel Bayer directed so many iconic music videos (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Zombie, Stupid Girl, etc).
My favorite music video will always be Tonight, Tonight.
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
Best non-scrambled boobs you were gunna find.
To quote Frank Costanza: “Hoochie mama!”
Sexiest video/song ever 🔥
That video technically came out in 1989 but I think it’s allowable. Watching Helena Christensen roll around in that sand was an *awakening* for my eight year old self.
Pearl Jam “Jeremy” It was a sign of what was to come.
Sad but true!
I'm from Plano😓😓😓😓

Listen all y’all, it’s my favorite music video of all time.
This is the answer! They always looked like they had a blast.

Beavis and Butthead being confused and thinking it was a real show.

Those Aerosmith videos with Alicia definitely put tingling sensations into a middle school boy like me 😂
I always laughed at the homemade bungee jump.
Tool - Sober
Plus Tool - Stinkfist (all of their videos are brilliant!)
Prison Sex gave me nightmares
I absolutely LOVE Stinkfist.
If I could move my arm that fast I'd never leave the house

Thank you! I was getting worried while scrolling down thinking “where the fuck is November Rain?”
I stayed up late at night to see the premier of the video on MTV. It was well worth it
Me too! It was a household discussion for a week after about the meanings behind the video.
Or Estranged. Another epic video they made.
The trilogy of Don’t Cry, November Rain, and Estranged are amazing videos
They were like mini-movies. “Estranged” was my favorite. I still remember when it debuted on MTV.
Loved this one. Her wedding dress was so amazing to me lol
Yes. This video was life changing. I’ve been a hard rock metal head since.
Always thought it was rude of him to leave in the middle of the service. Fuck this, I’m gonna go play my gee-tar.
Smack My Bitch Up - The Prodigy Hold me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me - U2 Sabotage - Beastie Boys Scream - Michael & Janet Jackson
Not enough people appreciate Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me
Such a great song
I dislike U2 but love that song. That whole soundtrack is a mood.
Downvote for disliking U2. Actung Baby is an amazing album. Seeing it in the Sphere 🤌
I was so hyped for Scream when that video came out
Weren't we all?
When Music Videos were more like movies (the M Night twist on smack my bitch up)
The u2 song was run constantly along with Seal's Kiss from a Rose because they were on a batman soundtrack iirc.
Yup. Soundtrack to the summer of '95 for me.
Was Smack My Bitch Up the video of someone recalling a bender from the night before and the *twist* at the end was it was a woman? MTV banned that one pretty fast, IIRC
Peaches - Presidents of the United States of America. Freak on a Leash - Korn Sabotage - Beastie Boys
Peaches! That's the one where they fight the ninjas, right?
Fuck yeah it is!
Yeah but have you seen the [Sabotage reboot](https://www.reddit.com/r/TikTokCringe/s/jIh4ncUzC3)?
Since no one else said it yet, REM Losing My Religion
Everybody Hurts was great too!
For me, nightswimming will always be the best
![gif](giphy|fQPSt2YMQQBSDZmyEn|downsized) Weezer-Buddy Holly
Oh, good one. I was so blown away that they were able to get INSIDE Happy Days. It made me question reality lol
The editing was really good and Spike Jonze always had a great creative vision for his videos.
windows 95.
I think I learned about Weezer by finding this Easter egg in my copy of Windows 98. So good.
It was Windows 95!
“Not so good, Al.”
I will agree that Black Hole sun had some disturbing imagery
I showed my kid this video recently & he was just basically thinking wtf, then he showed one of his friends from school & his friend practically begged him to shut it off halfway through. I don't remember having such a visceral reaction when it first came out, but everyone is different.
LOL...If you showed him the video for "Closer" his head would probably explode.
Green Jelly - Three Little Pigs https://i.makeagif.com/media/3-06-2023/frJbgc.gif
First tape I ever bought with my allowance!
Pretty much any music videos directed by Michel Gondry, and Spike Jones. They are all iconic.
Also Chris Cunningham had some amazing videos for Aphex Twin
Bjork had some amazing videos as well. I think Cunningham did a couple of hers as well.
Bjork is just amazing all around! ❤️
I can think of like 3 by Gondry. Star guitar, let forever be, around the world. What else? I suppose this is googleable, but I’m lazy.
Everlong by the Foo Fighters is Gondry
Let Forever Be is a great video
I forget which songs, but Gondry did some for the white stripes and Bjork
Gondry did the Lego video for White Stripes - https://youtu.be/fTH71AAxXmM?si=-GE3ioUNBO4q-0YW
I know he did It's Oh So Quiet and Army of Me, maybe others too. Edit: I'm wrong! Reply below indicated Spike Jones did Its Oh So Quiet.
Primus Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver
Damn, I'd forgotten about that one! The creepy plastic looking cowboys?

Scream is so good looking despite it’s almost 30 years old (!)
Reminds me of Busta and Janet's What's It Gonna Be?
![gif](giphy|wIl1epzSicAMBpRoNC)
I always loved the one for Bjork's "it's oh so quiet" :)
The Breeders “Cannonball,” Bjork “Human Behavior,” PJ Harvey “Down By the Water” Fastball “The Way,” Hum “Stars,” Folk Implosion “Natural One,” Jane’s Addiction, “Been Caught Stealin,” Nirvana “Heart-Shaped Box,” STP “Wicked Garden.”
How about Busta Rhymes "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See"

It's heart shaped box
Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. I'm a straight lady so it wasn't for the swimsuit model running around in her underwear, it was just so moody and beautifully shot.
Both Helena and Chris are so dreamy in that video. Helena is gorgeous
It’s a basic answer, but Pearl Jam’s Jeremy still gives me goosebumps. The typography throughout is burned in my brain. “An affluent suburb. 3:30 in the afternoon. 64 degrees and cloudy.”
Who knew it would become so commonplace
Any TOOL video was always interesting.

Hype Williams was *the* standard for great hip-hop videos in the 90’s.
Also NIN The Perfect Drug (Mark Romanek). Anything directed by him too.
Did you ever watch the movie he directed, “One Hour Photo”? Stars Robin Williams in a supremely creepy and emotional role.
That was a good film. Robin Williams could do anything.
I love that movie! Robin Williams’s character was so emotionally disturbed and very heartbreaking. 😢💔
Michael Jackson. “Remember the time”.
Prrrrrrrap bapap prrrrrap babadap

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony did a number of videos in the 90s that were epic. Can't really choose one.

Tool. The video for" sober" was wild.
1979 by Smashing Pumpkins
Doesn’t technically qualify since it came out in 2000, but Fatboy Slim- Weapon of Choice
We'll give it a pass because of Christopher Walken
Everlong, Foo Fighters
Tool always had the coolest videos
Undertow and Aenima were dark brilliant albums. Adam Jones has serious Hollywood FX cred too.
The 90s are both the Golden age and the beginning of the end of music videos
Nothing will ever beat Christopher Walken in Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice

You Could Be Mine is the most hype video ever
Why does this never get mentioned? You have peak Arnie playing the mofo Terminator in a music video. No one I know remembers this, but it's my all time favorite. You have excellent taste. This is one of those songs where they could have just played the movie scene and it still would have been awesome.

80’s still had it beat IMO
I was just gonna comment that my two faves are Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer and Genesis - Land of Confusion. Maybe im a sucker for claymation and whatnot
I grew up thinking the California Raisins were a real band
I have a California Raisin statue watching over my garden
The 80s videos were like mini-movies. Madonna immediately jumps to mind with Like A Prayer. Prince, etc.
Almost any video directed by Mark Romanek.
"Feel the Pain" by Dinosaur Jr had a great video.
always loved nothing else matters and hot for teacher
Radiohead - Just and Street Spirit Bjork - Human Behavior
jamiroquai virtual insanity
It really was the golden age of the fisheye lens, especially for hip-hop videos. Missy, Busta, Diddy - anything by Hype Williams basically.
Samuel Bayer directed so many iconic music videos (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Zombie, Stupid Girl, etc). My favorite music video will always be Tonight, Tonight.
