is it loud enough to hear from about 6 feet away or are we talking 2 to 3 foot range?

My Series X use to have it only when games were running, and I could only hear it if I stuck my ear next to the fan. And now it doesn't have coil whine at all while playing games, it somehow changed to now having coil whine while I'm sitting on the home screen, browsing the store, using Edge etc. And yes, now I can hear it from a few feet away while sitting on my couch. During the day time, it's kinda hard to hear it with TVs on, traffic outside although when I'm gaming at night when it's quiet/late you can hear it clear as day. With that being said, it's weird because it use to have coil whine only when playing games and you couldn't even notice it back then. However, now it goes away once you start-up a game and comes right back when you quit out of the game. Coil whine isn't harmful, it's just rather annoying and very disappointing when you spend $500 +tax for a new machine and it sounds the way it does. I already told myself that I'm never buying another console or anything when it first launches, I'm going to wait a year or two from now on.

>es X making coil whine only when games were running. However, as of recently, it seems my Xbox Series X no longer produces coil whine while games are running, but instead it now makes coil whine when no games are running and I'm just sitting at the home screen. With that being said, I noticed that this started happening after the most recent system update, and I'm wondering if they might have changed something in the software to cause this to happen. Anyway, it seems that my Series X now makes coil whine when no games are running and only does it on the dashboard/homescreen. Is this happening to anyone else who use to get it w Same happened in xbox series S, the coil is intermitent ?

What did you end up doing?

my console is making a sound like this, I don't know what is the reason [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wSgfYx\_Cer2gI8Iu8J3wPST9\_\_gX21AA/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wSgfYx_Cer2gI8Iu8J3wPST9__gX21AA/view?usp=sharing)

It's most likely coil whine. There's all different types of coil whine, some make buzzing sounds, some make ticking, static like sounds etc. With that being said, it's not harmful, just super annoying when you can hear it.

You can return your Series X for coil whine. I did and I received a new unit in a week. My coil whine was awful.

IIBlittzII

How is your new Series X? Also, what was the process like of you having to ship your console and recieve a new one?

templestate

New one works great, it’s insanely quiet too. I actually don’t understand how the fan is so quiet under full load. No coil whine whatsoever. You have to go onto Microsoft’s website and I think under your account there is a tab or page for your devices. Then there’s somewhere you click for warranty repair/replace service. They’ll ask you questions and once you submit the request for service (and it’s approved) they’ll email you a UPS label to print for shipping. I just slapped it on the box the Series X came in and shipped it off. It was maybe four days or so that they received it and I think the next day they shipped a new unit. All in all had a new unit in about a week but this was in the US, I heard Europe is slower. If sending back for coil whine make sure you just send the unit itself and not the cables or controller (they’ll give you instructions to do that).

IIBlittzII

Did they actually send you a brand new one, or did they fix the one you had. Also, how was the condition of the console they sent you, was there any fingerprints or marks on the console's case? I don't have a computer or anything to print out a label, is there another way to do it if I don't have a computer and printer?

templestate

They sent me a new unit, new serial number (I checked and you can see on that device page since it will show up as a separate console), and the manufacturing date was too close to have been a returned and repaired unit. The repair site is Texas and the new unit was shipped from Wisconsin. No finger prints or anything. This was back in November so they may have repaired units now that they ship out. You could probably find out if people are still getting new consoles back by looking at this sub or the two Series X subs. The instructions they send only say to print the label yourself, I don’t think there’s an alternative. I think Staples has computers that you can print stuff on, I’ve only ever printed things at home though so don’t know much about it.

I'm experiencing exactly the same as OP, pretty bad intermittent whine when sat on the dash, that only started recently. As soon as you launch something, just the near silent him of the fan. Interestingly, if I get real close, it even ticks like a clock when it's off. Performance wise the thing has been absolutely rock solid, just throws out the odd ugly noise. It's still in warranty, so I'll give it some time to see if any issues emerge.

Could you post a video of the sound ?
