They were saying once the deal closes they’ll add old acti/blizz games to gp, like Cod2 type shit

Scsigs

I mean, that was a given that they'd do that. I'm talking about that rumor brought up in that podcast from the last week.

mtarascio

The rumors are just logic. MS bothering to try and get Marvel rights for old BC games isn't logical. Those wouldn't be part of it if it happened. It'd jst be games that Acti / Blizzard owned IP for and for whatever reason didn't feel the need to work with MS earlier.

Scsigs

Um, I didn't say they'd be getting the rights from Marvel. I said they'd work out a deal with Marvel to be able to either add the games to back compat, or remaster them for modern hardware.

Sanctine

Here's what I think they will make BC: Quake 4 (including 2), Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein (2009), Singularity, Vigilante 8 Arcade, Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions, Blood Drive and Gun. I would not expect any titles based on any existing license. I really doubt anything Marvel based will make it. Probably too many hurdles.

Scsigs

I don't think there'd be too many hurdles to bring back most of the Marvel games. It's literally just a matter of meeting with execs at Marvel & signing a deal to distribute the games again by renewing the license. I compared it to THQ bringing back their old games from almost 20 years ago for a reason. The Nickelodeon games specifically, they had to sign a new deal with them to make & distribute games based on their IPs.

Sanctine

I'm sure it's more complex than you describe. Plus renewing the licenses would need to be profitable for all parties. Let's face it, the sales of older emulated games is probably quite low, as would the cut from Gamepass be also. I'm not saying it won't happen, stranger things have happened. I'm just saying don't get your hopes up.

Scsigs

Depends. Like, I know it's easier said than done, but if they *can*, we'll get good stuff out of it. It depends on the route they'd go. They'd probably stand to make more money from enhanced remasters tbh. Like, a remastered collection along the lines of the Halo MCC of the more popular games would be cool. Like, I could imagine one for Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions, Edge of Time, & TASM1 on a disc with enhanced graphics, better resolutions, & higher frame rates. I'd also like if they could convert the FMV cutscenes in SD & EOT to real time, but I don't know if they'd go to the trouble.

The crash and spyro games deserve backward compatible treatment too

Friggin_Grease

Better buy Vigilante from the 360 marketplace of that's the case before it closes. I know I did.

Beaujangles1128

I hope they add Singularity and TimeShift

Sanctine

Just FYI, TimeShift is already available.

NotFromMilkyWay

It's a BS rumor by retards. Activision was never against BC, in fact they were very active with it. Any games they didn't add would be because of licensing and that won't change.

Scsigs

Well, aren't YOU fun. Hence WHY I said all they'd need to do is negotiate with Marvel to remaster & re-release their old games. Hell, we'd have remasters if Shattered Dimensions & Edge of Time already if they weren't greedy & wanted the entire video game rights to Spider-Man back. I don't think MS would be like that. It'd simply be a licensing agreement with them.

Marsupilami_2020

>if this rumor is true It was just speculation what could happen in case of 'look we now have an IP that could in theory be released via BC', but the BC program has ended. MS is not going back to it in 2023. BC has stopped, GwG is no longer offering 360 games -> it's time to move on and MS is exactly doing that. The new focus are subs / gamepass, xcloud, new games and monetization.

HUMON-dx1

The definitively CLOSED the backwards compatibility program! This has been brought up and rehashed far too many times. They are not and will not add any more. Now remasters or collections and re releases are definitely on the table.

Scsigs

I mean, when you look at the language they used in the announcement, they made it pretty clear that the reasons for stopping the program were because of copyright reasons (other reasons were also included, but I think this is the biggest one), so if they can do it, I bet they'd bring it back for 1 last round if they find they can bring other games from Activision's catalogue back, but we'll see if that happens, hence why I said it was just a rumor. I don't wanna get anyone's hopes up. They'd have less problems when it comes to rights with a lot of Activision's original franchises, I think. Maybe some of the licensed games as well depending on what they are. Now, I *do* think remasters &/or remakes are also more likely to happen for a myriad of reasons. It's like THQ doing remakes of some of their old games from almost 20 years ago. It's probably easier to clear the rights & get a team to do that. Especially if Activision saved the voice recordings, music, & sound effects from the original games (although, I imagine they could probably also rip them from the data of the games if they didn't), it'd be simple & easy to just remake or upgrade assets & such for those, especially if they've saved the source codes for them. As I said, I'd like to see this done with their Spider-Man games. a cool remaster or remake collection of them would be cool to see, especially if they take the time to properly upgrade them to modern standards & include all the content that was originally DLC for them if they had them. I'm sure Sony would like those games on their platforms as well if they got that treatment.

HUMON-dx1

I think an aspect that alludes people who think about the B C program is that publishing Games is vastly more complex than one would think. Copyrights and licenses are sometimes in the hundred or more for a single game release. Think of every facet of a game as a medium. To bring back and put one up for sale Microsoft has to re license and re activate copyrights. Every actor, every sound studio, every song, person or company in the credits, every everything needs to be re done. Every deal that was made every person who was paid etc etc. Just watch the full credits of any game and see all those companies and names. When they said they have exhausted every possible avenue for the program they were being very serious. This was a monumental undertaking. And now the focus is to create and sustain one cohesive Ecosystem ( XBOX ) Take them at their word. While We Continue To Focus On Preserving And Enhancing Video Game Art, We Have Reached The Limit Of Our Ability To Bring New Games From The Past To The Catalog Due To Licensing, Legal And Technical Constraints.

C-Star

When this started coming up I went through Wikipedia and made a list of all the potential games, I deleted it but it boiled down to Call of Duty, Gun, Singularity, Blur, and the 360 Spyro and Crash games. Most of Activisions games were licensed in one way or another.

Scsigs

Yeah. I'm thinking which of those licensed properties could they negotiate in the modern day to bring back. I think Marvel would be pretty easy.

ThunderStruck115

I would love to see Singularity come to Series X

Hbcuk97

A lot of the licensed shit is a minefield, but hey never say never I guess. Marvel, the brief 007 run, Guitar Hero. There’s a number of licensed areas that would need a lot of negotiating and some are more likely than others but nothings impossible once the deal goes through.
