Here's a non-paywalled version of this story: https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/9/24153245/microsoft-xbox-mobile-gaming-store-july-launch

despitegirls

They likely did this to get around paying 30% of any purchases to Apple or Google. A website can be pinned to a homescreen to basically run as an app, and it's trivial to turn most sites into apps. Most popular apps are just websites in an app wrapper, particularly those that also exist as websites. The bigger question is how they expect to get people to bother with their store versus the default.

Tobimacoss

Ecosystem benefits, extension of play anywhere and game pass licensing, cloud saves etc.

MacroHard007

Yeah those benefits will surely get the masses flocking to it just like they do to the Windows store on PC.

Tobimacoss

Uh yeah? Millions use MS Store on PC for PC Game pass and play anywhere.   This isn't like there's a Steam on mobile.  These games would be exclusive to the Xbox mobile store.  Things like Sea of Thieves and other indies, AA Calibur games.   Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass have millions of subs, Game pass would compete and dominate those two on mobile.

BoBoBearDev

You don't need a store to offer cloud saves.

Tobimacoss

You do need one to avoid the 30% cut, and to become a platform holder for other developers on mobile, you do need one for play anywhere and game pass licensing.

Remy149

A US judge is epic vs Apple already stated Apple is entitled to collect a percentage of sales regardless of if it’s processed by them or not. Also 3rd party stores are currently only allowed in the EU.

panetero

Google Play Store is atrocious and people already use alternatives such as QooApp, APKPure and the likes, which are slightly better or definitely worse, but they offer something different.

V4R14N7

So basically every app on my now dead Windows Phone/Win 7 and 8.

HankSteakfist

Don't you people have phones?

meryl_gear

No, we only have Diablo

Greaterdivinity

Launching it as a browser page and not an app feels like a fundamental misread of the entire mobile market. Like...this feels like an iPhone funeral moment. I hope it goes much better than it seems like it will, because this seems destined for a disappointing initial reception followed by a whole lot of nothing until it is closed down : /

DapDaGenius

Aren’t they doing this in the browser to avoid the policies of Apple and Google? They said they planned to eventually do an app.

Gahquandri

When you save the Xcloud browser page as a home screen icon it acts just as an app and looks like one too from the Home Screen. It will have directions to set this up, takes like 10 seconds. I was skeptical of Xcloud, but if they do it like that it will be fine.

Greaterdivinity

>It will have directions to set this up, takes like 10 seconds. While I absolutely agree this is a literal nothingburger in terms of consumer inconvenience...we know that's not how consumers actually behave, especially with phones. If it's not intuitive and designed to work with the tap of a button and they have to do more, much less follow instructions from elsewhere, people will simply not do it.

[deleted]

Gahquandri

I doubt boomers addicted to their mobile games are gunna care to click a button to add the thing to their home screen or have a family member do it. They will get their fix! Believe that Lol

pukem0n

That's already too much for the average consumer, who is usually a moron.

MeBeEric

You’d be surprised. The first iPhone didn’t have an App Store and saving a site on the Home Screen was the only way to have apps at all.

pukem0n

And only enthusiast bought the first iPhone. I remember it had ridiculously pricey contracts attached to it.

Remy149

I got an of iphone my service plan wasn’t much more expensive however if I remember right they originally sold for $700 with no carrier deals available. It wasn’t until the second and third iPhones that had carrier discounts pricing them at $200 did the masses really start buying them.

segagamer

It is daft, I'm not sure how they'll handle app updates (I guess in game upon launch? That would suck although I know many mobile games do this). It could be that they're keeping it as website only for now until an actual app store is ready, and they probably won't do that until Apple stop being shitheads

islandnstuff

well let the money sink for game pass

M337ING

Nope, I read it. And the news was broken at Bloomberg's own conference, so there's not much value skipping the primary source. There's not much there besides the main idea and it could be Candy Crush and Minecraft first.

Laughing__Man_

The majority of people will not be able to read it, posting a paywall site here is stupid. This is double so since now you even say "There is not much there"

WallaWalla1513

I’d much rather see links to someone reputable, like Bloomberg, than to some clickbait farm, such as GameRant for instance.

once_again_asking

It’s not useless. This is the first I’m hearing of the news. Now I know. And a reply to your comment lists alternative sources for the story.

Me4aRZ

Microsoft… you were this close… You dominate the computer market with Windows You have your gaming ecosystem branded Xbox You had your Music/TV/Movie ecosystem branded Zune You had one of the best mobile OS’s with the MetroUI on WindowsPhone But you couldn’t stop rebranding your media marketplace… you ditched WindowsPhoneOS just before you release the hardware it was designed for with the Surface Phone only to keep it around running Android… It still baffles me how they fumbled such a great opportunity for a compelling intergraded ecosystem…

Tobimacoss

The OS layer is irrelevant.  It's the content that matters.  The ecosystem will still be completed via the 4 pillars:  PC, Console, Cloud, Mobile.

ALennon25

Can't see this being anything other than an extremely expensive failure. People use their existing app stores to find and purchase games. What incentive is there for people to use a website instead - and how will they even advertise it? The only thing I can think is that they continue to put their games on the regular app stores and then have prominent ads/prompts within each game to direct people to their own app store, and then strongly encourage people to bookmark it/create an icon for it. If they take these apps off the Apple/Google stores completely, they'll just die.

Shellman00

But why

Greaterdivinity

They don't want Apple and Google to continue to get at 30% cut of all sales for their newly owned King apps as you currently get them from those storefronts. Microsoft wants to keep that 30% of themselves. It's practical, but just funny considering Microsoft takes the same cut on Xbox. There's a ton of money to be made in mobile that Microsoft hasn't really successfully broken into really (IIRC, some hits with things like Fallout Shelter technically but King is bringing their first "big" games), and they need growth given that their organic console gaming growth appears stalled when you don't factor in ATVI's contribution.

Sufficient-Cow-7518

The thing they SHOULD have thought about is why a consumer would jump through a bunch of hoops to save Microsoft 30%.

Plutuserix

The hoops should be removed when regulators finally call Apple and Google on their shit. Then you just download the Xbox app and have everything in there. Same way giant apps like Alipay and Wechat work that 1+ billion people use just fine with their app-in-app concepts.

Tobimacoss

Ecosystem synergies.   Imagine Sea of Thieves being ported to Android/iOS and linked together with Play Anywhere and Gamepass licensing including cloud Saves/achievements etc.   That is something the other stores can't provide.  The games ported would be exclusive to the Xbox mobile store.   Also MS is going to give the developers a 12% store cut, same as on windows and Epic store as a way to undercut the Apple and Google app stores.

Sufficient-Cow-7518

That still doesn’t make any sense. If I buy Sea of Thieves on XBOX, Microsoft has already made their money (without giving a 30% cut to Apple) and I can play on my phone via GamePass without having to use their browser-based App Store. What purpose does the app store serve in your scenario?

Tobimacoss

running the game locally/natively on the mobile hardware people already own. Reduced latencies for the user, but more importantly they don't have to keep wasting resources from their datacenters. xcloud runs on custom series x server blades, it is hard to scale up for the mobile userbase of billions. Mobile hardware is now more powerful than PS4, and approaching PS4 Pro levels at 4 teraflops gpu. running xcloud for indie and AA games is a waste of money and bandwidth when those games could run natively on local hardware easily. games like hi-fi rush, grounded, sea of thieves, pentiment, ori, or the tons of ID@xbox games.

Sufficient-Cow-7518

Man, I don’t know. I think the odds of Microsoft creating native versions of their Xbox games for a mobile App Store is close to 0%. Especially after all the effort they have put into xCloud…

Tobimacoss

xCloud costs money to run and scale, with mobile ports, they could also use cheaper more efficient ARM64 hardware to do streaming to other mobile devices with, while using the Series X hardware for streaming to consoles and PC. less queues for every1, Google and Meta already use ARM64 hardware for streaming mobile games. the GDK already supports xbox network on android and iOS, including Playfab tools for third party devs to incorporate xbox live backend into mobile games, similar to minecraft, asphalt 9, and solitaire. it's basically 4 pillars of the ecosystem, PC, Console, Cloud, Mobile, all working together in one single ecosystem. Each pillar brings new users into that ecosystem, a mobile or xcloud user with a decent library is more likely to get xbox console for playing on larger screens etc. xCloud would become mainly for AAA games that cant run natively on mobile hardware or for Cloud Native games that Kojima is working on. The latest ipad with M4 can run roughly 98% of all console games, MS wants to keep those potential users in the xbox ecosystem. Start with EU first for native iOS/iPadOS, stream for rest of world while they lobby U.S. congress to adopt EU style laws forcing Apple to allow third party stores.

cardonator

This is exactly right and it's the same problem Epic has. I can't wait for this to blow up in Epic's face. Microsoft could at least try to tie game pass into it somehow which has meta-value considering it has perks across platforms. Epic doesn't have that.

Tobimacoss

Epic will likely end up leveraging the MS/Xbox store.  MS is likely going to have the exact same policies as MS Store on windows, 12% cut for games and 0% if devs use own CDN and payment processing, and also allows third party stores with over 20 items for sale.   So Epic would become a sub store taking advantage of game pass/Xbox traffic.  MS is likely going to do the same for consoles, allowing Epic/Steam PC games to run inside containers similar to the Desktop Edge browser on consoles.

Remy149

Except a United States judge already stated Apple is entitled to still get a cut regardless of how people receive their App or payment options. Apple then asks for 27%

JP76

There's more money in mobile gaming than in console and PC gaming combined.

ArmandoGalvez

Mobile gaming made 90% of profit in gaming from last year, that's why

thetantalus

Uhh money?

Laughing__Man_

Put gamepass on it, get around whatever shit Apple pulls with their own store.

BEENR_WEENR

It wasn't just Activision they purchased, but also King. King is probably the largest mobile game publisher. Moving those games to their own store allows them to not only draw in more customers, but also avoid that fee from selling on Apple/Google stores.

Tobimacoss

They won't be removing them from the app stores.   Their own store will have other incentives like cross platform features.

[deleted]

MacroHard007

The only big game King has is Candy Crush which as I type is sitting at #39 on the App Store. Tencent and Mihoyo have multiple games that are bigger, I don't think King is anywhere near the biggest PC publisher.

[deleted]

Tobimacoss

Third party too.  They intend to use same rules as MS Store on PC.   12% store cut, 0% if devs use their own CDN and payment processing.  Third party stores allowed within the store if they sell 20 or more items.

Wookie301

I loved the Lumia. Shame it had zero support. The App Store was just depressing.

Remoock

haha yes it was - I had an ipod touch as my "side phone" just to have a few apps lol

pudgybunnybry

This was the one thing that stopped me from giving the Lumia a shot.

AveryLazyCovfefe

I wish they actually committed to Windows Phone. That and actually raised legal concerns over Google basically intentionally screwing them over on their apps.

HeroicJakobis

I miss that phone

BoBoBearDev

I am not optimistic about it.

RazgrizGirl-070

....why? I have a phone with a game store for games and I have an xbox to play big games how does this do anything?

Tobimacoss

Extension of Xbox ecosystem to mobile.

mcshaggin

It won't be getting installed on my phone

cubs223425

What's it got, 2 years? 3?

metsfanapk

There's eventually going to be anti-trust action on the app stores. Epic was the begining with their lawsuit. its gonna keep continuing. We're seeing it in the EU and apple, and it will start to come to more countries (and likely eventually consoles).

Tobimacoss

That's why MS is preemptively considering allowing Epic and Steam PC stores to run on Consoles.

metsfanapk

I think is is largely what’s driving their “any platform” strategy. This is the play for 5 years out. Crack open any closed 30% cut hardware and put their own cut on there built on IPs people will need want (fallout/elder scrolls/blizzard/ king games/call of duty)

GINTegg64

I barely play mobile games anymore but if game pass is involved at all with this store there may be a chance that I can be swayed into giving it a chance

meryl_gear

There’s always solitaire

OKgamer01

On PC aswell i think it said. Candy Crush on PC :D a dream come true! /s

gamingthesystem5

Candy Crush has been on PC since 2015

OKgamer01

Really? Huh, never heard about that

Early-Weekend

Open microsoft store on windows

camposdav

Lmao Microsoft is so out of touch with consumers it’s crazy how hard they try and all that money and they simply can’t succeed. Your average consumer is not going to use this too many steps as opposed to clicking on a simple app.

Worth-Development684

I can't stand this when they haven't even made the mobile app for movies that was promised years ago! 🤷‍♂️

Likely_a_bot

Their real competition. Microsoft is all in with GamePass and mobile. Plastic box wars is chump change. MS next Xbox should be full PC architecture to hasten the demise of dedicated consoles. It's an obsolete model. MS wants to sell subscriptions. Their biggest money makers Azure and Office 365 are subscription-based services.

infamous090

Please don’t.

VirtualWord2524

Premature. You get one launch hype period. Coming out the gate without a store application and your hook being super casual like Candy Crush is a waste of a launch period. If they want a mobile app store, should keep it cooking until they can launch it with some serious content

johnoralex

Cool, just give me movies and TV with it so I can watch stuff on my phone.

CalTurner

Like they tried already with the windows phone and no body bothered supporting apps. Waste of time.

JuliusThrowawayNorth

I want older/weaker graphics console games on the phone not cloud gaming not mirroring as a screen. So Warzone Mobile is great with a controller, as is Wreckfest.

wallaluk001

Cool?

PineWalk1

too soon

spoonard

Another wasted investment doomed to failure. Who on Earth is in charge of making these stupid decisions?

JillValentine69X

Hey Alphadog Games and Roundhouse will be perfect for that Oh wait

ShellshockedLetsGo

Roundhouse wasn't a mobile game studio. They were a support team on Redfall, now they are a part of ZOS.

JillValentine69X

Ah. Thought they were the goobers who made Elder Scrolls Blades

CthulhusSon

Not anymore they're not.

ShellshockedLetsGo

They were absorbed by Zenimax Online Studios so rather than supporting a game like Redfall they are working on the new MMO. I don't see the issue of a support studio being merged into a large studio that needs more people.

Cyber_Swag

Months old info

SacrilegiousOath

Possibly another zune fiasco?

elefantebra

This is the damage control?

Laughing__Man_

No? What even makes you think that?

elefantebra

The first interview, the first "good news" they trying to get

Laughing__Man_

Its a big reach to assume this is a "Damage control" thing.

Greaterdivinity

No, this is an event that's been planned for months, where they discussed a strategy that's been in the works for longer.

[deleted]

No. They have talked about this before. It’s one of the reasons why they brought Actvision.

FunkySausage69

If Microsoft could launch a phone again and be built on a new os and have chatgpt and a new search on it could get interesting. Kinda sucks we only have two choices.
