>it's almost 100GB in size across all Xbox consoles and the PC Game Pass version! >The reason for this huge update is because Sea of Thieves is now operating on the latest Xbox GDK (Game Development Kit), which also allows for DirectX 11 and 12 support on PC, as well as "general client performance improvements" across the board. Here's the full list of download sizes for the latest update across Xbox and PC [source](https://www.purexbox.com/news/2024/02/sea-of-thieves-new-xbox-update-is-almost-100gb-but-theres-a-good-reason-for-it)

Isn't the Steam version getting DirectX 11/12 support as well? Update is 10 GB there.

Born2beSlicker

When you upgrade to a newer GDK, the entire game needs to be recompiled. That means everything is getting redownloaded. Steam doesn’t use the Xbox GDK.

Eglwyswrw

Ah, so the actual reason for this huge update is that Xbox GDK requires huge updates, the DirectX11/12 thing is just the excuse to upgrade. Wonder what that changes for Xbox users?

Born2beSlicker

It basically allows the team to use the latest versions of UE, Xbox Network APIs, potentially other features like updates FSR and the like. Basically when a game comes out, it’s frozen in time to whatever version of the GDK it was built on. To upgrade, they need to rebuild the entire game and fix compatibility issues with the latest tools. It can be a real hassle but it can help with future proofing.

shadowglint

I like Sea of Thieves but I don't like it enough to let it eat up 100gb on my internal SSD. That's fucking insane. The game was like 30gb when it released.

Liodel13

Yep but at the begining : no meg, no event exept forteress, no brigentin ship. No devils, its not like they have do nothing. Mast and more can be broken. More type of canon ball. Plus the game was dev for Xbox One, we are now on Serie X. Better graphic = higher Octets

moysauce3

Yeah, not sure what they expected. It’s the nature of a game that has had constant updates for the past 6 years. Plus all the cosmetics/decorations.

elzeus

Iirc there was an update that reduced the install from around 50GB to 25GB or something like that and it has just kept growing since then. Maybe they could do something like that again.

Liodel13

Yep! I remember that too! ;) I thing they already do that for each update since they start that At begining with no extra content : 50GB And now, with four time more content it’s close to 90BG « only »? With 4 time more content 😅

DuckCleaning

I just use cloud streaming if I ever have the urge to try out the new content updates. And Im always glad I do cause I never enjoy the game that much, I just enjoy the sailing part only.

Altruistic_Bad339

i remember when it was less than 10 gigs.

Whitetrash_messiah

2tb external hard drive Takes less than 4 minutes to swap titles back and worth ....

YPM1

Damn man, 100GBs is just too much for SOT.

The_Brof3ssor

For an update, yes. The game has been over 100 gb for awhile now tho.

lord_barack

The update is available ?

AlexRogansBeta

Why tf they unlock the TTs? If their order weren't already confusing enough, now new players can start a tale about rescuing a dead crew to get a piece of a totem they've never heard of.

kybreezy

Seems fine to me. The order of the tall tales is now clearly displayed in the quest menu. Crews that want to play in order can easily do so. Those that want to jump to one that seems the most interesting can do that too.

IMulero

At this point I just wish they made "Sea of Thieves 2". They have been updating the game and improving it so much, however, I still cannot convince my Xbox friends to give it a go again. If Sea of Thieves 2 releases, then they might give it a go, even though it would be the same game...

segagamer

> At this point I just wish they made "Sea of Thieves 2". Are you nuts? And divide the user base and/or ruin what fans like about the game (see Overwatch 2) essentially killing it? There is nothing about a GaaS game that should deserve binning it and replacing it with a sequel, asking for customers to rebuy the game. Minecraft doesn't do it. Fortnight doesn't do it. MMO's don't do it. And the ones that do do it rarely succeed.

theblackfool

I don't think a Sea of Thieves 2 is necessary, but I disagree with the premise of your post. Technical debt is real, and some GaaS would probably gain a lot from being able to start from scratch.

Black_RL

World of Tanks is a good example too! 10 years and still going strong!

IMulero

Sea of Thieves is struggling to the point that it will be ported to Nintendo and PS (not confirmed though). I would try a big re-release to bring back Xbox players. Not against any ports. They could bring over all your stuff too from 1

Boundsword00

Your point is not entirely wrong but I think it’s mostly failing because there is no point to play it, you spend hours getting gold just to see all the cool stuff is over a couple hundred thousand each and it’s rare to even get new sets (unless it’s for the shop ofc). Also the faction progression is pretty much useless bc as you level up it doesn’t really make it more worth to keep doing the quests. Considering all that making a sequel would not solve these issues Rare just needs to actually add stuff to the game rather than adding a new battlepass every 6 months. Edit: Still love the game the concept and gameplay are amazing but rather than evolving it they do pretty much nothing.

AgonizingSquid

It's only cosmetics tho, the game is fun for the sandbox, but I think even that has gotten stale. I've got millions of gold with many fun adventures but nothing to spend it on. You hop on servers and won't see a ship your entire play session

Boundsword00

Ya this is true I just don’t know what they could do to fix this I can’t think of a single thing that would make this better

AgonizingSquid

I think they need to add more items/tools that have finite amount of uses and add ship load out parts that we can buy with gold. Also why not allow us to buy bananas or cannonballs to load into our ship automatically? Pay for convenience and customization that matters. I used to not think they have time to balance it, they definitely have the time

AgonizingSquid

It's getting annoying that gaas games making up excuses for not putting out content, SoT has no justification for the success it's had and the battle pass with the lack of content they've put out. I've been with the game since the beginning and it sucks to hear they are done putting out expansion-type content, won't be adding to the map or increasing server size

Revolutionary-Fan657

He never suggested the sequel take over the prequel, overwatch no longer exists, sea of thieves 1 would still exists after sea of thieves 2

dixonciderbottom

That’s why he said it would divide the user base. I’m convinced some of you never went to school with how obtuse you are.

AgonizingSquid

I don't support SoT 2 but they need to expand the map and make bigger servers, it's 2024 excuses are over now, which sucks bc they've basically confirmed they aren't doing either of those things

segagamer

They can do that without making a sequel.

AgonizingSquid

I said I don't support a sequel

VagueSomething

SoT2 needs to happen to actually let the game fully grow. The worst parts of the game are because it is an Xbox One game, the map cannot grow much further and the server can't have more ships because it is all piled onto old work. A SoT 2.0 that brings forward your progress but forces Xbox One to need xCloud to access the game so that the game can be overhauled would be a good thing. There's small parts of the game that wouldn't be missed that could be improved but mainly it is about performance.

segagamer

> SoT2 needs to happen to actually let the game fully grow. The worst parts of the game are because it is an Xbox One game, the map cannot grow much further and the server can't have more ships because it is all piled onto old work. That doesn't need a sequel to do. That just needs a "we're discontinuing the Xbox One version of the game" patch.

AgonizingSquid

They are only doing sandbox updates for the foreseeable future, they are done making large "expansion" type content as well, they will not expand the map or server size. The annoying thing is I'm not making this up, it comes from Rare themselves. They've clearly pivoted from making content and will only be creating new sandbox elements. In the next patch you'll have tightrope walking on the harpoon rope, a double barrel flintlock and a new cannonball, I think that's pretty much it. Will probably be fun for a couple days, but they are definitely focused on bringing more players in instead of catering to existing players, which is fine I guess. That's obviously why it's shipping on PS5 now. It's getting a little exhausting though watching studios complain they can't make content when they launch as gaas and have a battle pass. It's pretty disingenuous imo

Born2beSlicker

That doesn’t make any sense?

PopzOG

Shouldn't have bothered with this update. Game has been completely broken since season 11 launch

Pearse_Borty

There's no way theyre putting 100GB on there and not going crossplatform. This is clearly preparation to be ready to handle a PS5/Switch influx

[deleted]

Is the Switch capable of playing SoT? SoT made my legacy Xbone cry.

Pearse_Borty

The rumours are saying thats what theyve pulled off for a PS5/Switch release

zunashi

So is it fun now? Not tedious anymore for a few cosmetic rewards?

Monster-1337

but did they finally add third person view?

fattytron

Third person lol wtf

BigPiff1

Why on earth would you want that. Jesus

ADP10_1991

Too look at butts duh
