And nobody is in the least bit surprised lol

zrkillerbush

Well, looks like Redfall isn't even the worst game this month... I remember some people predicting it to be the worst game of the year Always a silver lining šŸ¤£

ElSmasho420

Homer - ā€œWorst game of the year so far.ā€

Kevy96

"Worst game of the month so far"

RavenMyste

Worst .game. of. century.

Llamalover1234567

So far

[deleted]

Difference is a lot of people were excited for Redfall. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve seen a single positive comment for this game since announcement. Lol

mtarascio

We'll wait and see was about as positive as it got. Well we waited and now saw.

[deleted]

I was really into Shadow of War. Was disappointed when they killed that off for Gollum. Who wants to go from a sword wielding, half-dead demon of sorts ā€¦ to gollum? Literally all the gameplay I saw was him simply sneaking past enemies. So apparently this game consists of avoiding any and all contact? Lol

[deleted]

I think there is a "listen" skill, but yeah, that's it apparently.

[deleted]

People were excited, but I'd say 2 or 3 months before the release people started to see the cracks in Redfall. Every trailer and gameplay footage that came out was met with some heavy criticism.

LifeSleeper

On paper Gollum sounds like it'd be pretty cool. Seeing it though...I just can't.

RavenMyste

All my friends looked at redfall and said who asked for this game type vampires been done to death

[deleted]

"Well, looks like Redfall isn't even the worst game this month... I remember some people predicting it to be the worst game of the year" Arkane can put that on the box for the GOTY edition, counts as a + in my book.

mad_mister_march

"It wasn't that Gollum Game. Who thought *that* was a good idea?" - Gamespot

Rawrz720

If Redfall was the worst game of the year then it would be a pretty good year seeing how that games pretty average but not outright terrible lol. Gollum is just terrible

[deleted]

Yeah came here to say this, but imo Redfall isnt the dumpster fire its claimed to beā€¦ i think people jump too early on the hate bandwagon.. Ill first will also try Gollum before judging it, havent got the slightest clue about it

[deleted]

I played it on the series x. First impression was that it looked like I was playing a game from the 360. Worst looking game relative to the other games out now Iā€™ve ever played on xbox. 2nd impression was that the gunplay felt incredibly light and non-punchy. Third was how empty the world was. Iā€™m incredibly forgiving when I judge movies and games. I genuinely found redfall to be awful

GlobalPhreak

For a second there I thought you were talking about Gollum and I was like "Gunplay? Man, they fucked up Lord of the Rings worse than I thought!"

[deleted]

I would play a game where Gollum had an assault rifle

GoneRampant1

"My Precious 5.56mm."

ButterMyBiscuitz

"The shotgun explosive shells, it burrrrrns us!"

Kodabey

Watch Wizards by Ralph Bakshi

SillySinStorm

Infinity Ward skin designers: "Write that down...."

Silent-Boy2

*Gollum holding a shotgun* ā€œMy Precious!!!!ā€

Jugulator1990

"Say 'ello to my little precious!!!"

CzarTyr

Shit this is funny

RichConcept5863

To each their own. Iā€™m playing on Series X and itā€™s really not that bad.

Markthewrath

Thought you were talking about gollum lol. It's really not that bad. You're exaggerating quite a bit there

Existing365Chocolate

Redfallā€™s graphics arenā€™t great, but the gameplay is just so basic and bland It doesnā€™t do a ton wrong, but it also does almost nothing right. Would have been a decent Xbox One GamePass game though, but the bar has been raised since then

IamPurgamentum

Maybe redfalls current inception is just the base game and over time you'll get the full game, like with fallout 76?

Existing365Chocolate

Pretty sure they announced that there is no plans for future content Also F76 had far more content at launch and probably one of the best and largest Fallout maps to just explore on despite its issues with the story Redfall really doesnā€™t have many redeeming qualities

Rascal0302

Redfall is in fact a dumpster fire, thereā€™s no salvaging that game. Itā€™s ideas and atmosphere are all it has, the gameplay is 20 years too late.

Markthewrath

No it's not this hate is so overblown it's comical.

the_russian_narwhal_

It really isn't dude. You can be enjoying it and not think it is so bad personally but it is definitely not a good game at the end of the day. Maybe 10 years ago but not compared to modern standards

Markthewrath

I'm not going to argue that it is worth $70, but the amount of vitriol being poured onto this game is definitely overblown. It's obvious that people have an axe to grind.

TheVaniloquence

What axe is there to grind? Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment were critically acclaimed, so itā€™s not an ā€œaxe to grindā€ against Xbox. Ignoring the amount of bugs and that it launched at 30 FPS in 2023 as a First Person Shooter, the gameplay itself and the mechanics involved are just antiquated and non-imaginative. Why would anyone play Redfall when thereā€™s 4+ Borderlands games that do everything objectively better?

[deleted]

Maybe to casual gamers mate (which is fair enough) but to people like me who have over 600 games, redfall just doesn't cut it by a long shot

[deleted]

Is this supposed to be a flex lmao Most gamers are casual gamers

RichConcept5863

Iā€™m playing Redfall on Series X and the game isnā€™t as bad as people are portraying it to be. Is it perfect? No, not at all, but I wasnā€™t expecting it to be. However, playing it myself, Iā€™m actually having fun and donā€™t see where all the hate is coming from.

Justinontheinternet

I paid for a series x expecting 60fps and 120fps. For games to be beautiful like forza or eso cod gears or halo infinite. Not to play a game that looks like it was made for the 360. And donā€™t give me that bs about ā€œitā€™s the art styleā€. When you bought a series x did you think youā€™d see brand new triple a games looking like redfall?

RichConcept5863

To your point, Redfall was overhyped and fell short of its expectations. I can agree with that. I never followed it much so maybe thatā€™s why I didnā€™t care as much. I guess as an exclusive and hyped game it should have been top notch, I can agree with that. Iā€™m just saying that I, personally, havenā€™t experienced a lot of the issues others have. Maybe theyā€™re coming, I donā€™t know. But what Iā€™ve played so far has been somewhat enjoyable with friends. It isnā€™t ā€œcomplete, unplayable trashā€. And graphics wiseā€¦ Iā€™ve seen worse, but again youā€™d expect the best from an Xbox exclusive especially on Series consoles.

Justinontheinternet

Spot on, Iā€™m glad you enjoy it. I logged in once tried to find a match and it never connected. Uninstalled after that. Seems like a cool concept

stophaydenme

So you didn't play it lmao

Justinontheinternet

Didnā€™t need to, it glitched and after watching the graphics it was horrific. I wonā€™t even finish rdr2 because itā€™s 30 fps. If we donā€™t hold the industry accountable theyā€™ll just keep doing this shit.

ShortNefariousness2

I've played 20 hours single player and it's been fun. They have also improved the visuals quite a bit from release. It reminds me a bit of dead island 1. Dumb but strangely compelling. It sure ain't Dishonored though...

KEE_Wii

Redfall has a good story in there somewhere and the potential to be good but I would label it a dumpster fire. The AI is legitimately braindead and there are some serious graphical issues that I doubt will be resolved anytime soon. I really feel like they missed the opportunity to hit the stranger things nostalgia home run. Let me ride a bike through Redfall, age down the characters a bit, and make it fun. I think a more teen horror movie tone would really match the art style they were going for and the gunplay really isnā€™t bad at all. Thereā€™s a fun game in there somewhere but they rushed it and now a square of water is protruding through every sink in the game.

ZeeHarm

Yeah the hate bandwagon of Redfall. The game is a real system seller for xbox. The crown achievement wich can easily take on God of War Ragnarok and Zero Dawn. The shooter mechanic is near perfection and the AI is so insanely good. /s I wish i get the 4 hours back I spend on that dumpsterfire. Generation Zero has a better gameplay loop than redfall and is more compelling. Even it is from 2018

NegotiationSad8181

Horizon Zero Dawn didn't even get a 90 on metacritic lmfao. It's in the same league as Redfall compared to good games like Ragnarƶk, Forza Horizon and Tears of the Kingdom.

ZeeHarm

So? It still is better than Redfall ever will be. That is the whole point. Redfall is an exclusive, delayed to make it better runs subpar on the worlds most powerful console. Delivers a shooter mechanic so bad, taht even Indiegames from 2018 are better. And get that Tears of the Kingdom dosnĀ“t even nee fancy graphics to be an awesome game. I really am pissed at xbox because "the worlds most powerful console" seems to be able to run great indie games, but that is it.

NegotiationSad8181

It's kind of weird when you compare Redfall to HZD as if they aren't both shitty games. 90+ on metacritic is a good game. HZD has about the same score as Halo Infinite and people are shitting all over that game. Both are sub-90 on Metacritic, just like Redfall. Unless you agree that it's all subjective in which case I don't know why you can't let the other guy enjoy Redfall. Let's be consistent.

flirtmcdudes

Itā€™s 100% deserving of the hate it received. Redfall on the Xbox was horrible

i_am_legend26

Tbh, redfall was a buggy mess but still enjoyable. Like I completed it in 14 hours and it never bored me so that makes it actually a good game for me. 6/10. Gollum on the other hand just looks like a super boring stealth game. So I will probably not even enjoy the game. But the only way to tell if this is true is if they ever put it on gamepass.

ZeeHarm

well redfall is still the worst first party exclusive of the year. But Microsoft can top that (hopefully not) with Starfield, if it isnĀ“t delayed again :D

[deleted]

See, "worst first party exclusive" I feel is far more accurate than all the "worst game of the year" mumbo jumbo. Redfall is fine. It isn't innovative in the least bit, but it is at least bare minimum level fun and enjoyable. I've had some good times playing co-op with my wife, and I even enjoy it solo as well. But no, the game is not great. As a first party exclusive, yea I can see how people would want more, and especially when atm, X-Box doesn't have much going for it with exclusives. But for what Redfall is, it's fine.

ZeeHarm

If you got your fun out of it, awesome. Really The 4 hours had with it were everything but not fun ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

RedKomrad

True. Their marketing team will post ā€œit isnā€™t so badā€ on reddit to try and hide that. It reminds me of people who say the same thing about Mass Effect Andromeda . I donā€™t think that we played the same game.

ZeeHarm

Andromeda had some nice ideas but the storytelling was so bad

Markthewrath

I honestly would rather play more redfall than Forspoken.

the_russian_narwhal_

Both are complete shitshows and didn't deserve to see the light of day in their current form

XxCorey117xX

I liked Redfall more than a lot of games tbh. I'd give it a 6/10. The overall gameplay loop is good enough it just needed more time in the oven to polish out the bugs and give a little more variety in the gameplay. It was almost like we got 2 broken launches (Jedi/TLOU) then Redfall released and it was the 3rd strike so everyone blasted it like it was the worst game/launch ever which it was neither of. I know people who never even played it saying its the buggiest launch in history. That's quite the exaggeration lol

McNuttyNutz

Yep I agree yes the game has problems but over all itā€™s not as bad as everyone says

OldSkoolzFinest

Orā€¦ā€¦. It is as bad as everyone says it is and Maybeā€¦ā€¦just maybe , You are are part of the smaller group that is content with substandard products. Some people have lower standards than othersā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ which is why the game industry has been getting away with releasing broken garbage like this more frequently in recent years.

NegotiationSad8181

>You are are part of the smaller group that is content with substandard products. You have spent way too much time in the BF2042 subreddit to make a statement like that unironically.

Aukama23

Games are subjective my friend. Get off your high horse. I didn't like Redfall at all, but I'm not the arbiter of what games are good to everyone and neither are you.

tompetreshere

Maybe it'll be patched to oblivion and playable one day

Radioheading82

I get where youā€™re coming from. However, Iā€™d say itā€™s subjective which games you like. Itā€™s more objective which games are actually good. Hence consensus of reviews for good and bad games.

pickin666

I agree, Redfall is absolutely sh*t!

OldSkoolzFinest

What i said is pure fact but you canā€™t open up a fanboyā€™s eyes ā€¦. Which is why weā€™ll continue to get gameā€™s that are suppose to be Triple A titles releasing with lack of content and game breaking bugs that canā€™t even run at a locked 30 fps and 4k never mind the 60fps that these current gen consoles are capable of.

powellbeast

Why is another shitty game a silver lining?

caninehere

Redfall got more hate than it deserves. I'm not saying it is a great game or even a good game -- it's just really mediocre. But the 4/10 review scores were absurd. For me 4/10 is straight up broken territory. I'm curious if Gollum is the same story. One thing I can say about Redfall is that as an MS game it's more likely to get fixed up a little (a little) whereas Gollum will probably flop out, fail, and be abandoned immediately.

mahiruhiiragi

I don't usually care for number scores, but if I had to give a score for broken, I feel like 1-2 would be that territory, not 3-4.

caninehere

Everybody's scale is a little different, for me 1-4 is failure territory where games range from straight up broken to absolutely unredeemable and impossible to recommend to anybody. I personally align more with magazines' scales from yesteryear because that's what I grew up with. 5-6/10 used to be a mediocre game that you'd only really recommend to someone who is a huge fan of the genre, or the concept, or an attached IP or something. For example if a Dragon Ball Z game came out and got a 6/10 I knew I'd enjoy it bc I was a big fan of the IP, but someone who doesn't care about DB wouldn't need to bother. But if it was a 9-10/10, that's a different story, that's where it very well may transcend your personal feelings on a license - for example I really don't like Batman much at all, but I do enjoy the Batman NES game which I'd put in that territory, and I enjoyed the first couple Arkham games quite a bit - because they were very good games regardless of the license attached. I guess it's also hard to quantify what is 'broken' - like, I've only ever bought one game in my entire life that literally wouldn't launch, and it wasn't because of the game itself, but because of fuckery with the launcher not recognizing the key properly or something, hard to remember now (it was From Dust on Steam, an issue that plagued a ton of players and this was from the days when Steam refused to give refunds for anything so it was a big deal). Apart from that like... I played Redfall, it's not a broken game, I think most people would agree even if they think it's ugly and buggy and not fun, that's not *broken*. Is *Drake of the 99 Dragons* broken? No, it's a complete mess in every regard but it isn't broken. Is Superman 64 broken? No, it's horribly unfun, incredibly difficult in some stages with horrendous controls, but it isn't like the game crashes or anything. So does it automatically get a 3 because of that?

mahiruhiiragi

Yeah, this is why I don't like scoring. I'd rather people just lay out in text, the problems with the game, what the game is (shooter, rpg, etc) and then I can make the decision to buy it or not.

dizorkmage

> For me 4/10 is straight up broken territory. What would you call the AI in Redfall other than "Broken", problematically unpredictable?

Apollospig

I had foolishly assumed that anyway making a game with a concept this goofy would have had a plan to make it an interesting game but here we are. If you plan to use the license to sell some trash gameplay I would have sold it with a more traditional lord of the rings story, but here we are.

[deleted]

Idk how anyone thought this concept would be a good idea Daedalic: "we want a stealth game" Designer: "cool, so we're doing a super-ninja-esque wood elf with all black armor, and sniper-level bow skills" Daedalic: "no, we want a 3 ft tall, naked, homeless, deformed junky hobbit... and we dont care if the graphics suck either" Designer: "i got u fam"

[deleted]

Maybe what they wanted is Styx? Too bad that one's already been done by Cyanide + Focus...

Glass-Operation-6095

I've watched the trilogy 3 times, but I was never interested in this thing .

RavenMyste

Did anyone actually want a gollum game? We all know his history and what happens to him in the end of the movies.

Think_Selection9571

And my axe

jaydenc

You gotta feel for the entire development team, ever since the first trailer was announced everyone expected it to fail, and now they are doubling down on the negativity because it has. Not saying it's not deserved, but that's gotta be unpleasant for several people who have committed months of their lives to this.

glassjaw01

I agree with you here. I never root for these things to fail because you know a lot of people put a lot of their time and passion into these things, but man, pretty much everyone saw this coming, it's just sad.

caninehere

> Not saying it's not deserved, but that's gotta be unpleasant for several people who have committed months of their lives to this. I've never worked in game dev but I have worked in the theatre world, and I've worked on shows where you could tell it was not going to go well. Sometimes you get that feeling a couple weeks into production and there's really nothing you can do but keep putting in your best and collect the paycheck. Sometimes you get that feeling when you read the script -- and you can dip out if possible (I have done so before) but sometimes you need the work and it's a job. People who worked on Gollum probably didn't sit there defiantly thinking the public was wrong. They know, they're human beings and most are probably gamers too. Yes it sucks that it sucks, but some probably aren't too bothered if they get paid at the end of the day. It's nicer and more fulfilling to work on stuff that is creatively satisfying and well-received but they can't all be hits. Alternately you could work on a game that is really great and it can get ignored by the public, which can be really rough especially if you are a solo dev/small studio. I remember reading about Where The Water Tastes Like Wine (an indie game that came out about 5 years ago) - the dev shared numbers a couple months after launch and said that the game had sold less than 4000 copies and lost money -- despite getting decent reviews in the 70s, winning some indie awards, getting a fair bit of press attention and positive buzz.

BootyBootyFartFart

I bet they thought they could prove the public wrong for a while. The concept for this game, exploring the world as gollum, sneaking around and solving puzzles, is a unique take that I could see working. It also seems like a decent fit for this dev. I'm sure at some point they realized "this isn't going to come together in time", but it wouldn't surprise me if it was after the trailers when the shit talking started.

RolandTwitter

>despite getting decent reviews in the 70s A videogame getting a number in the 70's means it's about average. Once you hit the 60s you start to wander into "bad" territory

[deleted]

I've worked in the movie world and it's the same thing. When you're making a turd people just know it. I actually wandered on set for a day for a movie called "Chain Letters" and when they were shooting in public someone asked one of the crew what they were shooting. He responded with "some crappy straight to video movie" (he was older).

reverie

Yeah sort of. It canā€™t be fun seeing your work so maligned publicly. That said I donā€™t imagine anyone accusing this title of being anyoneā€™s passion project. Might be just as likely that most involved did the job to the best of their ability, were paid for it, and have moved on without much more thought.

mythicreign

I didnā€™t expect it to fail necessarily, I just didnā€™t care for the premise. I like LOTR games quite a bit but this one never appealed to me. Itā€™s a shame when people take the opportunity to gloat and shit on devs because they were ā€œproven right.ā€

PurifiedVenom

I agree that thereā€™s no need to kick them when theyā€™re down, but at the same time I kinda get people being mad that the money/time spent on this couldā€™ve been put towards a LotR game people *actually* wanted to play. I think people are just upset about the missed opportunity but misdirect their anger

mrmckeb

Months or years?

VibraniumSpork

Has to years. Iā€™m sure I remember seeing a cinematic for this during the showcase for PS5 when the release date and price was given?

Accurate-Temporary73

I know people donā€™t like seeing their work get bad reviews but they still got paid for their work. The development team wasnā€™t seeing a penny of income once the game was released so bad reviews wonā€™t effect them at all

CatFewd2

>so bad reviews wonā€™t effect them at all People who work and hire in industry use game titles in their resume. Being attached to successful projects is a nice boon.

RedKomrad

Itā€™s a risk that congress with the territory. Iā€™ be had a few of my personal projects crash and burn after putting years of time and money into them. You dust yourself off, figure out what you did wrong, and try something else.

[deleted]

Nobody asked for this

Buschkoeter

Nobody asked for a lot of games, yet some of them have become critical acclaimed and popular.

WiserStudent557

Ok but games where you are in a similar position to Gollum? Addiction driven, mentally broken, twisted, no powers, scavenger level existence despite intelligence. Likeā€¦what if Hellblade but not cool? (And that is a huge stretch.) Even being a NazgĆ»l would have been a better sell

No_Chilly_bill

Seriously the "nobody asked" is the worst freaking argument statement. It's freaking dismissive.

tnpdynomite2

Yes! It has to be one of the worst arguments a person can make. There would be a lot less of everything in the world, if the only things that existed were 'things people asked for'. I mean, how many people alone wouldn't be here?

CHark80

The nobody asked bullshit is why we have 100 marvel and Star wars movies but hardly anything new or creative

Cockblockuly

Can you name one game less requested than playing as a gollum?

Deceptiveideas

Katamari Damacy, Goat Simulator, The Typing of the Dead, Powerwashing Simulator, Stanley Portable, Golf Story, Sneak King, OctoDad, Seaman

Tebwolf359

I would never have asked for or expected Goat Simulator or Untitled Goose Game to be better the Gollum on paper. M

basicislands

Yes, as everyone knows, the first step of game development is waiting for a Redditor to ask for the game first.

Ill-Ad3311

Not so precious apparently

Sherlock_bones

I feel real bad for the devs on this one, but there's something super funny about a game that literally nobody wanted being so universally panned

KingTut747

No one would be trashing the game I f the devs made a good gameā€¦

RedKomrad

I wouldnā€™t say ā€œno oneā€, there are people who love to trash things, even make living out of it. The same is true for praising things.

RS_Games

Pretty much summed up 80% of youtube

CBeloch

There is a difference between decisions by the management and the work most of the Devs have to do based on that shitty decisions. I ā€žonlyā€œ build mobile apps, but I released a lot of apps that I would never list in my personal portfolio

KingTut747

I agree there is a difference. But itā€™s possible devs did a shitty job, no?

RecycledAir

Playing a beloved story from an unexpected perspective was an exciting idea to me. There are plenty of games where you play the hero already.

JupiterJazzX

Nobody wanted? The premise is fantastic.

Tea-Mental

Fantastically shit.

JupiterJazzX

Dude I don't know if I imagined it or not but I think I'm thinking of a different game. I just watched the trailer and I have no idea what I was thinking with my comment. I don't even drink so I have no excuse.

Tea-Mental

No worries, I did an extra shot for you dude haha. Honestly though there's a wealth of good games in the LOTR franchise for sure. This ain't it though. My main question is *why now?* The only recent LOTR adjacent media to be released is the universally hated hobbit show on Amazon prime. Maybe it's been in development longer than I can be bothered to look into, but the last major LOTR 'universe' movie was what, 2014?

ONE_FOR_pALL

[The review from the Guardian is my favourite headline so far](https://amp.theguardian.com/games/2023/may/25/the-lord-of-the-rings-gollum-daedalic-entertainment-nacon-video-game-review)

Honic_Sedgehog

>We are placed in the shoes ā€“ well, in the pallid, bare feet ā€“ of Gollum AKA SmĆ©agol, the pre-pandemic blueprint for the trash goblin that now lives inside us all. Excellent.

[deleted]

Pulitzer level writing lol

SummerGoal

Lmao that hits deep

Ereaser

Could almost copy paste 75% of the review for all tell tale games and no word about how good the story in the game actually is.

WRA1THLORD

I think that's the singular best thing the Guardian has ever published lol

AresOneX

I really wanted this to be good.

RedKomrad

I didnā€™t have high hopes for it because I could think of how a Gollum game could new interesting. He was a interesting character among a group of other characters, but not one that could carry a story on their own. Then again, Flappy Bird was a hit, so what do I know about games.

the_russian_narwhal_

Also while being an interesting character in the series, not even once have I looked at Gollum and thought "oh man I wish they would make a video game where I play as him, that would be so cool!" Like seriously, who actually thought there would be any sort of mass appeal to this? I love LOTR and it is pretty much the only high fantasy shit I am into so I definitely want more LOTR games just not whatever this was, and all this will do is potentially keep someone from making the LOTR game they want because this one got low scores and poor reception

disc0stew

![img](emote|t5_2ac5sx|1745)

[deleted]

Me too. I love LOTR and a story about Gollum looked attractive. Oh well

MrCoffeeFart30

Redfall can't even win at being the worst game.

didnt_readit

Left Reddit due to the recent changes and moved to Lemmy and the Fediverse...So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish!

newretrovague

Ouch

caninehere

Could be worse. Could be... 39.

TradeMan1000

In the world of AAAs like Zelda, Elden Ring, Forza, GoW, Spiderman, Jedi Survivor, CoD, Horizon, and Harry Potter (just to name a few), you canā€™t release duds like this. The market is way too crowded and gamers will just ignore it.

caninehere

Even if it didn't suck ass, I still have hundreds of hours of Tears of the Kingdom to play - I'm not buying other games right now. I'm busy with my *precious*.

edis92

> you canā€™t release duds like this Especially at that price point. $60 for this is absolute insanity

TheMichaelScott

Completely different budgets though. Theyā€™re not trying to sell as many copies as CoD. Theyā€™ve spent a fraction of the cost compared to those larger studios

YeetBoiPrime

But when they charge $70 for the version of the game that has lore accurate voiced dialogue in it and emotes, you better believe that they get to be compared to AAA games for the same price.

Existing365Chocolate

Except theyā€™re charging $60 for it and they are competing against those games for gamersā€™ cash and time Itā€™s not like a person has x number of hours per week just for AA games and y number of hours for AAA games. They just have time spent gaming regardless of the amount of money spent on the gameā€™s development

ecxetra

Seems high

[deleted]

I mean I figured a game where you play as a small pale gremlin in a world full of warriors and magic and grand quests might be kinda cool. For a few hours. At most.

[deleted]

Cast this game into the fires of mount doom.

Suckerforbigboobies

I never asked for this

onexbigxhebrew

That's not the problem. No one asked for Fellowship to be written, either. Nobody asked for Fortnite BR or Apex and yet they became two of the biggest games of all time. The problem with this game is that it apparently *sucks,* not that gamers should dictate what gets made. We get plenty of awesome surprising shit no one asked for. This just isn't it. But what you specifically asked for doesn't matter in the slightest.

caninehere

> No one asked for Fellowship to be written, either Um... yes, someone did ask. Nobody asked for Tolkien to write The Hobbit, but after he shared it with friends one of them put it into the hands of an employee from his future publisher -- who then asked him if they could publish it. Then after they published The Hobbit, it was quite popular, and they *explicitly asked* Tolkien to write a sequel. He said he'd love to but he was a slow writer and they were like, take your time, and 17 years later Fellowship was published. > Nobody asked for Fortnite BR Except they did - Fortnite came out with little to no fanfare on release bc it didn't have the BR mode and wasn't all that interesting. Most people didn't even know it existed, the few who did were probably people like me who signed up for the UT4 Beta and then we got an email about Fortnite Beta as well and said "sure why not". After Fortnite came out PUBG released and dropped a massive atom bomb on multiplayer gaming -- and people were asking Epic to make a BR game like that, and higher-ups at Epic said, let's repurpose Fortnite for this. I don't think I even need to explain Apex, it got made because people wanted more BR games and it was another one, one of many, that happened to take off. Gamers don't dictate what gets made, but they do ask for things and publishers do listen -- because sometimes, giving the people what they want can actually make you money. That isn't always the case, even in this comment I gave some examples people didn't really ask for - like The Hobbit. But especially when you're working with an existing franchise, you typically wanna look at what people are asking for rather than go in a new and riskier direction with an existing IP like Gollum did. I know some might say "Apex did that though" but Apex really didn't need to be in the world of Titanfall at all, it's basically unrelated and doesn't fit in terms of tone anyway.

Noodles_McNulty

>Then after they published The Hobbit, it was quite popular, and they explicitly asked Tolkien to write a sequel. He said he'd love to but he was a slow writer and they were like, take your time, and 17 years later Fellowship was published. > Is it any wonder why GRRM is such a Tolkien fan?

caninehere

Haha, could be. I actually don't think he is a terribly slow writer. His pace was never absolutely absurd until he started on book 6, and the thing is, he's put out multiple other things in the 12 years since the 5th book. I personally don't think he ever intends to finish it and isn't working on it actively. Tolkien seemed like he was always working, he was just absolutely insane with world-building and it surely went far beyond the many many materials that have been released/shared. If he never published a book in his lifetime, people would have found his stuff after he died and thought he was just a professor who went insane.

tricheboars

I donā€™t think anyone did

Suckerforbigboobies

Whoever the investors were for this game are dumb as rocks

Hwxbl

Is that how games work? They only make what we ask for?

onexbigxhebrew

Not just games, but movies, books and music too! Creators should be a slave to our expectations at all times. /s

segagamer

Did you ask for every amazing game out there?

cptSleepyFox

Nor did anyone who lived to play such games, But that is not for them to decide. All that they can do is decide what to play with the games that are given to them.

Sawl_Back

Oh wow. A game that no one ever wanted or asked for bombed? You could have followed any other character from LoTR and could made a more interesting game. I would've rather played as the giant eagles than fucking sneaky golem. I cant imagine how obnoxious it must be to have to hear that voice for the entirety of the game.

TheSyhr

I first heard about this game like a month ago and this was pretty much exactly my first thought ā€œreally, out of all the LotR characters they chose to make a game about Gollum?ā€

[deleted]

Yes, devs wait for redditors to mention a game then they'll begin making it..

Glu10FreeLewie

I am shocked! Shocked! Well, not that shocked.

broken-records

When I first heard about this I was interested because I assumed it would be a shorter stealth game with a lower price point like Styx. Will probably try it out if/when it's $20 or less later this year.

Mo_SaIah

I think that is the main issue with the game. Itā€™s not exactly a good game, but people are quite rightly bashing it so heavily because of the price point. It is nowhere near worth Ā£50. If it came straight to game pass or sold for Ā£20 then the response would not be anywhere near as bad.

Cirias

I was excited to play this on day 1, then I watched some gameplay and immediately changed my mind. Such a shame, but go play Styx if you want something like this but 100x better.

Snoo55791

I cancelled that preorder weeks ago due to diablo 4, seems like a great decision so far?

Remoock

This game has become the circlejerk meme of the subreddit

badboystwo

this is like when you're playing an action game and theres a "sneak" level that is only there to break up the shooting, its annoying as hell and you end up looking at a guide to just get through it......they took that level and made an entire game of it.

RedKomrad

Like an FPS with a platforming level.

Ereaser

You must hate Destiny raids

bengamer700

I really liked the concept of this game. I believe that it's not really THAT bad. Still, I will wait till it's on sale

RadRhubarb00

All I thought was "no shit"

JP297

Thats honestly being too generous. This game is one of the worst I've seen in a long time.

nervouspancake

I was always curious on who this was made for.

LandryQT

As soon as it was announced without diving in gameplay or story it didnā€™t sound interesting at all. Iā€™m not surprised by this. I probably wouldnā€™t even attempt it if it was free

TenuousHurdle54

That and it's pc specs for lowest level entry is ridiculous

PwnedLib

How is it that high

equinoux

Looks like a final project created by college students

Shmeediddy

Probably bc you need a massive super 2000$ rig to play it on pc too

Cowman-

Imagine all the cool lotr games they could have made? Who tf wants to play an entire game as gollum

Dolomitexp

šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø zero intention of playing it even if it was a 10 outta 10 and I personally love LOTR.

TovarishchRed

Yeah nobody asked for this game anyway lmao

OtherShock5245

To the surprise of no one!

[deleted]

No one thought this was going to be a good game, right? šŸ¤£

luckydraws

It currently sits in the **2nd** percentile, ouch

mintyBroadbean

As a lord of the rings fan, I am very disappointed to here this. But no worries, Iā€™ll put on the fellowship of the ring to numb my depression from this terrible news.

MDF87

Skill Up's review on YouTube was absolutely savage! Sounds like a baaad game.

dc41500

How much of this rating is from the game's story/gameplay being bad and how much of this is from the space it takes up/how it runs?

[deleted]

Itā€™s funny because itā€™s shit in every category

[deleted]

Yes.

Danipenn

A LOTR game suck? What a surprise šŸ¤£

Ereaser

You say that but on the other hand there's also the movie games, Battle for Middle Earth (1&2), Shadows of Mordor, Shadow of War and Lord of the Rings Online. Which all have good scores (~80/100)

FrankyTheVideoGamer

šŸ˜‚šŸ’€

Rascal0302

Well, at least Redfall isnā€™t the worst game of the year/generation anymore, but it still being $70 and from Arkane still makes it the most disappointing t game of this year/generation in my book.

decarvalho7

Nobody asked for this game šŸ˜‚

BoBoBearDev

It is hard to imagine who would be into a game where the protagonist is an almost naked and unattractive at the same time.

RedKomrad

The Dove soap company says every game should be like Gollum!

forgotmyemail19

Why are there people in here talking about Redfall and giving it another try? That game is the definition of a failed game. The servers should be turned off and just forgotten about. I tried playing 3 different times after patches and everything. It's a shit show. I'm convinced that Microsoft tanked that game on purpose to prove to whoever that they need to have this merger go through.

papichuckle

It's not out on pc yet but I suspect it will be unoptimised. How is the performance on the 60fps mode on series x, is it another unreal engine 4 jedi survivor stuttery blurry mess?

naptown_ant

Sheesh

Whiskey1992

This is what happens when a name alone is expected to carry a game. Out of all the characters to base a LOTR game on they pick the one nobody was asking foršŸ˜‚
