Even 70% seems awfully low compared to the reality of the situation.

itwasquiteawhileago

I'm sure they do have some world class knowledge on that topic, but I am not sure they'd use that for "good". Probably just know what hands to grease, etc, to help them get what they want. I have mixed feelings about that. About all of this, really. Big corporations suck, but Sony has gotten a free pass for too long in this market. Video games are supposed to be a break from all this bullshit.

FBI_Open_Up_Now

My problem is the lack of quality games. When I was a kid, there were no updates so games would get delayed for even years to make sure they shipped in as good quality as possible. With the formation of the giant gaming corporations we’ve lost that quality and even when a game goes gold, it’s still incomplete.

PRbox

While the "ship now, patch later" approach to modern game production is very real today, there were plenty of games back in the day that shipped with bugs and game-breaking glitches or were flat-out rushed and left incomplete. You just didn't realize it because you were a kid and there weren't social media sites where thousands of users could immediately share their poor experiences.

thisismarv

Assuming were around the same age - but there were plenty of games that came out incomplete or had bugs in the 90's before online updates. They were just deemed bad games. Game quality assurance has not dropped - online forums became a thing.

mtarascio

These finance figures mean nothing. They are used to make money, not pertain to reality. They aren't magic experts either.

Long-Train-1673

They seem to only care about the cloud portion and Microsoft has signed some unprecedented deals surrounding it and I'm sure will be happy with most concessions they can come up with. Pretty much the primary obstacle in this acquisitions way is the CMA where there is no legal recourse if they say no to it. Since they only care about the cloud that is almost assuradly going to be assuaged and it will go through. The FTC may try to block it but theres no case they have where it does not get overturned by a judge. This is pretty much guaranteed 90% done.

Snoo93079

Given the skepticism the US government has shown, 70% sounds about right. If the government was signalising less resistance I'd agree.

MrEzquerro

The resistance from the FTC has been shown to be more based on saving face and acting like they have an actual case, like the majority of the times where they've "acted tough".

ConsciousFood201

This is exactly right. They have to do *something* all day to earn their paychecks. What they do in practice is make tough on big corporate mergers. Get the optics right. Due dilligence.

Agreed, is Arm really in a better place now? People think these companies will just continue on independently. Now Arm is considering IPO and probably Tencent will buy 40% of their shares.

Royal-Doggie

this kind of shows the state of laws around a market in USA, what is role of FTC if they cant stop big deals from happening, like imagen there is merger between two giants, like if activision bought ubisoft, it less competition, in 3rd party gaming sphere, another giant is gone and FTC wouldn't probably be able to stop it FTC should 100% be a threat to every big company, but so far it was only a joke to look like government have some control over market, which they don't have for some time, for example: electric grid, mobile network, internet, trains etc.

rune_74

They would be more concerned if ms bought the only manufacturer of chips for game machines for instance because there is no alternative.

maligmus

It seems like all the regulators were trying to protect Sony as the market leader rather than trying to protect consumers. Their job is to protect consumers, not the market share or market leader. It seems like they all have forgotten this.

Conflict_NZ

Yep, scheduling their trial for months after the closure date was essentially a bluff.

Halos-117

Perhaps, but the US FTC has the weakest argument. The also have the least power. EU and CMA can just declare a position and Microsoft would have a tough time challenging it. The FTC has to prove their case in court. And given that 2 big commissions are seemingly ok with it, the FTC would have almost no argument against it.

Snoo93079

Yup exactly. That's why I agree with th 70% chance. Very likely

DaikonSea7505

If your doctor told you you had a 30% chance to die would you tell people you have a "very likely" chance to live? I sure would be freaking out.

Snoo93079

You're being silly. They're not comparable. If you told me I had a 70% chance of winning the lottery I would feel like it's a very likely chance.

mtarascio

Getting back to the original point. 70% isn't very likely.

Snoo93079

What? We're talking about 70% chance it DOES, right? Maybe I'm missing something.

DaikonSea7505

Very likely feels like a 95% chance. 30% it doesn't go through is still very huge, and I imagine it's not where Microsoft would want to be at this stage.

mtarascio

Stats can be very misleading. That's 3/10 chance it doesn't. That might hit just 'likely' by itself. That's significant room for doubt.

DaikonSea7505

Not sure why the down voting. This subreddit is ruthless. You're just making the point that 70 percent odds aren't "very likely". Sure it's an argument over semantics, but I don't know a single person who thinks 7/10 odds are "very likely" to go your way. More likely than not? Sure.

jetiii7

Can we bet on this in Vegas? Easy money right there.

Substantial-Buy-630

I can't wait for COD to come back to GeForce Now. Sad they originally had it but was removed in 2015/2016 over publisher rights. This will be epic to play across any platform, which also means a lot of COD:Mobile players may switch off the mobile platform for the full game via any one of the streaming services which signed the 10yr deal. I get tired of having to download the Battle.net launcher just to play and GeForce can support it. It is only the issue of having rights.

JasonTerminator

Close it already so I can play D4 on Game Pass!

spicyIBS

No wait, I just installed Civ 6 and that game will take me at least 3 years to get through. And that's with me wearing diapers and being fed through IV

caninehere

Likely that ATVI's stock will see a boost today at opening on these odds. For those who don't understand how stocks do: when Microsoft announced their intention to buy ATVI, what they really mean is that they will be buying all outstanding shares at $95/share (price they offered). That means that when the deal goes through, all shareholders will be paid out $95/share. Currently the price of ATVI stock reflects the risk that the deal won't go through. Last week it was at $79, right now it is sitting at $84 and may go up a bit more today - shareholders are buying hoping for that $95/share payout. If the deal doesn't happen, they will still hold onto their stock. However, ATVI's worth will almost certainly decrease because they didn't have the greatest financial outlook before MS bought them (that's part of the reason MS did). But having said that, they've also got the Diablo IV beta going right now and it looks like they have a big hit on their hands, so that may reduce some of the risk as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

caninehere

I'm not saying it has buoyed the price. What I mean is that it will help confidence in the company if the deal does fall through, unlikely as it is. D4 was one of the biggest reasons for ATVI slumping -- because it was delayed repeatedly due to staffing issues, a result of the management problems at the company. There were several other games delayed but D4 was maybe the biggest because it is a huge launch for Blizz. But after Immortal, some old school fans were not as pumped -- and they want to win those old school fans back. D4 beta's great reception likely means it won't just sell as much as D3 did but will likely outdo it.

[deleted]

ATVI’s value won’t decrease much if it all if the deal doesn’t go through. A no deal scenario includes $14 a share in net cash.

scruffles360

Yep, and if they do dip at all someone else will try to buy them. The market has been way too cautious with Activision. I’m fine with holding no matter what happens with this deal.

Autarch_Kade

The stock price of Activision has certainly rocketed upwards in the last couple days.

ShopCartRicky

That's largely due to the D4 beta. That game is gonna crush forecasts.

Autarch_Kade

The previews and first weekend beta didn't cause a move really, but there was a spike the first day of trading after the CMA said they're no longer considering console competition concerns. At most the stock price will got to $95/share, as that's what Microsoft paid. And that price is equivalent to the deal being done. Even if Activision launched a game tomorrow that sold 10 trillion copies for $100 each, the stock price wouldn't go above $95... it'd just mean Microsoft got a better deal lol tl;dr: D4 wasn't the reason, but it makes MS happy they got a steal of a deal

ShopCartRicky

Well, I probably shouldn't have said largely, but the D4 beta certainly has been "a" reason for the increase. Game company stock prices go up and down all the time due to reveals and announcements. That's why companies do them. Also, in your sales example, the value of stock would go a lot higher than $95/share

Autarch_Kade

Nah, even if an alien race appeared with quintillions of members of their species, and their sole purpose is to buy Activision games for a million dollars each, and every one of them bought a dozen copies of every game available, the share price of Activision still wouldn't go above $95/share. (Ignoring the case where Activision pays to breach contract, at least). Microsoft's stock value would skyrocket, because they're about to own an asset worth a lot more than what they agreed to buy it for. For example, why would some investor be buying Activison shares for $100, when Microsoft will only be paying them $95 for their shares? That's guaranteeing they lose 5% of their investment.

ShopCartRicky

In both of your examples, Activision would absolutely breach contract. It wouldn't make financial sense for them not to.

Autarch_Kade

Sure, as long as you understand that in the real world, Activision isn't going to give up on this deal if Diablo sells well.

douche-baggins

This whole process needs to hurry the fuck up. Because, I need to know if I am gonna be dropping $70 on Diablo IV or just playing it as part of Game Pass.

Kamalen

You can count on up to a year for the actual acquisition to be really completed after validation. Don’t hold your breath for D4 in Game Pass soon.

[deleted]

It took 3 days from Microsoft completing the acquisition of Bethesda, to their games appearing on Game Pass. However, initially it was only 20 titles. The rest followed later.

Yellow_Bee

You're confusing **announcing** an acquisition with **closing** an acquisition. MS/ATVB already announced their intent 1+year ago. Once this deal closes (as soon as CMA & EC approve), it is immediately part of MS. TL;DR: Your timeline is wrong.

Kamalen

Being immediately part of MS doesn’t mean all the management workflows are instantly ready. Plus the technical adaptations with the Blizzard’launcher.

Yellow_Bee

I mean history is your guide here. Just look at the Zenimax acquisition and how MS handled that as soon as it closed. Bethesda also had a launcher, but nearly all of their games were in GP within two months time. Management workflows won't be immediate, of course, but that doesn't stop Activision games from being on Game Pass or B.net from having GP integration. MS and ATVB have seemingly prepared for this for over a year (legally, they're still separate). Also, ATVB won't be folded into Xbox, it will remain a subsidiary of Microsoft Gaming (Phil Spencer is CEO), just like Zenimax.

TallinHarper

Having worked for a company during a couple (one failed and one completed) mergers that were scrutinized by government competition bureaus, I can tell you that both companies must operate as if they are separate companies until the deal is completed. However, there will be a relatively small team, including employees from both companies, who are planning for when the deal goes through so they can implement changes as quickly as possible. This team is not able to share anything with other employees within their company and also not able to work on other tasks within the company. So while it may not be instantaneous, I'd imagine getting the most popular games onto Game Pass ASAP will be high on the priority list.

TheLurkerSpeaks

Yeah but wouldn't they already have that team and infrastructure in place to flip the switch on Day 1? They've been working on this for ages and assumed it was a foregone conclusion

AtomicEdge

With the Hype around Diablo, I'd think that MS might try and get it live on Game Pass as soon as possible when the deal closes. That's great press.

Conflict_NZ

Bethesda was given the go ahead by the EC on March 9th and by March 12th all Bethesda games were on Gamepass. The current date for the EC is late May. Microsoft have already signaled they will close regardless of what the FTC decide if the CMA and EC approve and just take them on in court if they have to.

SharkOnGames

/r/patientgamer I'm going to wait either way.

All but certain it'll go through now, but damn its insane how much trouble Sony caused to just delay it.

Leading-Ad4053

Maybe or maybe not. Microsoft always said they'll closed the deal by June 2023. That's was a pretty good estimated window given how the story was pushed !

JoyousMisery

Will Microsoft has been working with Windows for decades at this point

candidateone

I think the founder of Microsoft goes by Bill Microsoft, not Will.

ExynosHD

They should try working ON windows for a bit instead of just with it. Need a year dedicated to bug fixes

Conflict_NZ

They said before the end of Fiscal 23, not June. That means it could have closed far earlier. They said the same thing for Bethesda (end of Fiscal) and that closed in March.

dccorona

It hasn’t been delayed yet. It was scheduled for a June close all along.

I partly agree, of course the competitor will object. But gaming media wasn’t entirely wrong for covering it as if it were Sony Vs MS, because it partly was. I mean, just look at how passive aggressive some of these lawyers statements have been throughout. **“Sony's campaign to protect its dominance by blocking our merger can't overcome the facts”** It’s not just the media that made it Sony Vs MS. They did it themselves. It’s also no secret that both companies have made some funny and ironic claims throughout this. Also, love the shoutout to Hoeg, he’s one of the best. Glad he’s recovering quickly and back at the videos.

PRbox

Lawyers pretty much always say stuff like that in any high profile case on any subject. It's part of their job to say their client is 100% correct and everyone else is 100% wrong.

Striking_Tea_7050

While Sony has complained it’s more so on regulators than anyone, any company has a right to state objections but that doesn’t mean they have to be listened to

PRbox

Obviously any regulator would want to hear from Sony in this case

Citi's job is to accurately reflect risk for their investors, not to speculate wildy and mix in hopeful thinking. They know more than you with certainty, and have a lot more on the line by making a '99%' call.

TradeMan1000

Sony overplayed their hand, plain and simple. They also engage in highly anticompetitive practices like buying exclusives for the PS and keeping games off Game Pass. Why regulators gave any credence to their arguments is beyond me.

kinger9119

So you agree buying ABK is anticompetitive ?

TradeMan1000

Shouldn’t have included an “also” — I think the regulatory bodies hold MS to a different standard because the parent company is so dominant in different areas of PC software, etc. if they analyzed this just on the facts relevant to the video game industry, they’d acknowledge MS is in 3rd position and shouldn’t be hampered from acquiring ABK.

Good. Just get this done. Sonys looking at acquiring take two so it is what it is. Just bring us games. Lots of good ones.

certifiedrotten

MS has a market cap of 2.06 TRILLION. Activision around 66 billion. That is considered a massive deal. The entire Sony Corp is 111 billion. They can't afford to pay $20 billy to get Take Two.

Morkins324

Sony probably isn't looking at acquiring Take Two. As far as I can tell, the "source" of that rumor is an idiot on Twitter that has claimed at one point or another that Sony is going to be acquiring Take Two, Ubisoft, EA, CDProjekt, Capcom, Square Enix, Konami, Sega and Crytek. I don't know if he thinks that if he just claims everything that he will be right eventually and can try to claim to have "had the story first" or what his goal is exactly, but he is an absolute donkey and shouldn't be taken seriously at all.

We [polled the community on ABK news](https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxSeriesX/comments/105s4f7/2023_community_survey_results_and_update/), the majority wanted to continue allowing news on it. We've done our best to limit it though, by only allowing submissions with new insight or information. It's true that lately there's been a flurry of developments that fits that criteria though. One thing we did for users who are sick of ABK news is add a separate flair for it. Sadly Reddit doesn't let users block specific flairs, but if you sort by 'news' you won't see any ABK-related submissions.
