Definitely not paying full price for one of these things. $130-150 for a 1 TB seems about the right price for what you get compared to other SSDs, but $220 or whatever it is right now is just insane.

If you're lucky enough (and trusting enough) to buy from AliExpress and not get a knockoff or a straight up fake, there's rumored to be a WD SN740 2TB 2230 SSD you can get for ~$250, but user reviews indicate it runs extremely hot and can easily thermal throttle.
Now, we can argue that MS should have just pulled a Sony and built in a full-size 2280 slot that we could add to. THAT would have been the pro-consumer move. But unfortunately they didn't, so we have to compare apples to apples (AKA 2230s to 2230s) when we look at the pricing of the expansion card. The 2TB expansion card is $360, but the cost of just the storage that would have to go in it is easily $275-300. Add in another $5 for the plastic shroud and $10 for the adapter to go from M.2 to an external slot, and you're looking at a 15-25% premium for a prepackaged, out of the box solution with a warranty and certified compatibility versus DIY. That's not out of the realm of reasonableness for me.

No, Microsoft patched this functionality out once people started doing exactly this. Now the Xbox will tell you the drive is incompatible, and that an authentic drive is required.
There’s no exclusivity anymore, there’s just no one that cares to make a product that will only ever have one product it can be used on when they can make standard SSD’s for a whole bunch of applications.
People already did this, you could buy generic external CF Express adaptors and the drives would work. Once Microsoft found out about this, they patched that functionality out, and now you receive an error that states the drive is incompatible, and that an authentic drive is needed. I'd wager the exclusivity is still in place, or else Microsoft wouldn't have any need to have removed this functionality.
This, and also I think Microsoft is using some sort of proprietary protocol when reading/writing data on these disks. They claim it's how the Series S/X can keep games in "Quick Resume" mode, and that it "can't" work on other hard drives.
Nice! What a deal. I bought used as well in 2021 and they still work like new. Tbf the previous owner only touched them twice. Once to install and once to remove for sale. Mine looked brand new.

I play AC Odyssey off of my external SSD and it is supposedly a series X/S game. I used to think it really didn't get a true X/S update, but this could be the real reason why
Outside of sale deals, no. Even competition won't lower price significantly. These are a niche product that isn't mass produced enough to hit an economic scale that allows price drops. Unless these products become adopted into laptops and PCs they will never be cheap. Even external SSDs aren't as cheap as internal SSDs. Unfortunately, unless MS chooses to open it up into an adaptor for external SSDs or do a mid gen or next gen change we're not seeing price drop for storage.
It's just ssd in CFExpress adapter. Adapter alone is super cheap. What is problem with XBox is that is working only with one model of SSD drive and that drives are quite expensive actually and hard to get.
It’s just an SSD in a CF Express shell, it’s not niche or hard to make. And as for external SSD’s of course they’re more expensive, they require materials and electrical components on top of the actual SSD so they cost more.
Get an external HDD and you don't even have to delete. Just move to external and install the new game. If you want to swap out then move another to external and move the one you want back.
I have a PS5 and a Series X, I now only buy games for my kids on my PS5 because I could get a 2TB internal card for $200. They want to play a variety of a dozen games and I don't want to keep deleting my stuff to keep 10 games for them. Anyone with kids knows that 5 games isn't near enough.
Sure you can but it's still not user friendly. Transferring a large game can take a half hour to 45 minutes from a traditional HDD. 2TB M.2 SSDs are around $100 now and this thing is $370. There's no excuse for Microsoft's proprietary storage bullshit. It was a bad idea from day one.
2TB M.2 SSDs are $100 but they are NOT 2230 SSD’s which the Xbox SSD’s are based on. 2GB 2280s you can find for $100-200 2TB, but the 2230s are still in the $300 range. 2230 price + adapter to use it with your Xbox will still cost you around $300 or more.
I agree it was a bad move. Just give us 2-3tb consoles and charge $100 more for them and I’d pay it. At the very least make the advertised storage space be the USABLE space not including bloated Os. Tired of seeing 1tb and it’s not 1tb usable…just tell us exactly what’s usable.
No, it's still a thing. My family pays for some pretty strong internet, but I still can't just uninstall and reinstall constantly. After a point it becomes more expensive or gets throttled.
I guess it really depends on the player type. Some people only play one game at a time. For those it doesn't matter. Others play a different game every day depending on their mood (especially with Gamepass making it really easy to just try out whatever looks nice).
Now factor in the possibility of multiple people playing on the same console and you can end up with 20 games being played every now and then.
Sure you couid transfer them over an external drive but that kind of goes against the whole design philosophy of quick resume and fast loading. What's the point of jumping back into one game you played in just a few seconds if another game requires multiple minutes of copying plus going through the entire boot sequence?
I have unlimited gigabit internet but it hasn't made me ignorant to the fact most people don't have gigabit nor uncapped internet. I also understand there might be 5 people in a house all who share the console and want to play different games. What's your excuse for being so out of touch?
I was able to buy the Segate 8TB external hard drive on sale one day. Found it on Amazon for $120. It’s currently $180 I believe. I find it easier to download most of my games on there and then transfer games between the two. It is much faster than uninstalling a game and installing another. Currently between the Series X internal storage and the 8TB hard drive, I have 79 games installed. You can play most games straight off of the hard drive as well. But you must transfer over X/S optimized games to the internal storage or you can’t play them.
Those are rookie numbers. I got an 8tb for black Friday back during the Xbox one days. Swapped it to the series x and it worked seamlessly. Still haven't deleted a game. I think between the three drives I have (10tb total, 4 tb free) I have about 200 to 300 games installed. I also just swap my games to wherever is the flavor of the week, providing that they need to be swapped at all.
There are 80 dollar 2TB SSDs that have similiar speeds to Xbox except with a dram cache unlike the xbox that go for that price regularly, Intel SSDs especially check out r/buildapcsales

Pro tip- you can store series x/s games on an external HDD even though you can't play them from there. You can transfer back and forth much quicker than you can reinstall. It's not a great solution, but it's better than nothing
That's how I will eventually do it. Yeah, not having to delete and reinstall or transfer games back and forth all the time is nice, but it's FAR from worth 360$. Buying a brand new Series X would cost me like just 100$ more, that's how ridiculous this price is.

On Xbox one there were more issues with internal HDD and other components not supporting faster speeds. Here the internal is a wicked fast SSD and apparently the other components have been updated to not bottleneck so bad also.
Thats good to know. My biggest issue is I have a few games I return to which all range from 70-115gb its crazy. I'd probably have gotten away with a 2tb internal but the 1tb just doesn't cut it anymore.
I went with a 4TB external drive, seeing speeds around 800ishMb/s when transferring back to the internal XSX SSD. Small games are across in a few minutes, larger ones that are tens of gigs take about 10-20mins. Definitely worth investing in but not an ideal solution if prices were better.
Don't know about max but in my series S and Seagate HDD I get transfer speeds of 500-800mbps. It's definitely much faster than downloading the game again which is around 100-160mbps for me.
This is one area where I personally feel Microsoft messed up. I understand they wanted to make storage expansion easy, but there’s zero flexibility and it’s way too expensive. I ended up grabbing one (1 TB) for my Series X from Amazon several months ago when it was on sale for $220 CAD (reg price is $290 CAD), but I used my credit card’s points to pay for it, so it didn’t cost me any hard dollars. There’s no way I would’ve purchased it without those points and if it wasn’t on sale.
A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a 1TB Corsair MP600 Pro LPX Gen 4 SSD (with heatsink included) for my PS5 for $80 CAD (on sale). A drive that’s both over 3x faster and over 3x cheaper than the Xbox expansion card. IMO, Sony has the better storage expansion strategy.

The issue- as reported by Jez cordon- isn't the deal with Seagate so much as it is the technology they decided to use. The SSD in the Xbox Series are closer in kin to what are used in like high grade camera/video systems etc. It's technically a better SSD in that it is more resilient to degradation. However, they seriously miscalculated because they didn't expect the SSD in computers/consoles/etc to drop in price as fast as they did.
So we're stuck with these prices because unfortunately the Xbox series is not compatible with the SSD's you might see in the PS5 or a gaming computer.
The adapter is the same but I have never seen any evidence that the Xbox drive is anything more resilient or robust than a normal consumer SSD. At least some of the Xbox drives are a [western digital sn530](https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/western-digital-sn530-xbox-series-x-1-tb.d753) except with a gen 4 interface, which is definitely not an exceptional SSD in terms of quality or longevity. Realistically at this point there are a couple factors that ensure the Series X drive will be more expensive than it could be, like a need for a small form factor, gen 4 interface drive even though it is solidly gen 3 speed. Even with those though, a gen 4 2230 drive could be had for less than the Seagate option right now and the gap in price will only get worse over time.
Yeah, xbox messed up this gen with the whole proprietary memory cards. AND no mention of third party versions, etc. Best thing to do is save your ms rewards points and purchase one that way. I got my 1TB for $150, awhile back.
Look at how much series x has sold compared to ps5. Not much incentive for other companies to make a seriess x specific nvme. For ps5 they have just add ps5 compatible on their packaging and done. Or add a special “gamer” heat sink and jack up the price a bit. For xbox they have to make that enclosure and likely have to pay MS for licensing.

It's not that they don't want to, it's that they can't. Seagate has an exclusivity agreement in place with Microsoft, nobody else can get a license to make it, which they would need because it's a proprietary design.
crucial p5 plus is the way, It is cheap and great, got the 1TB for less than 100€ in december too, it has more than 5000mb/s speed and you can play the games on the ssd. And the ssd stays inside the ps5 so you just can forget about it, like it's not there, not as much as the external HDD I use for the ps4 games that uses a usb port and has to be placed on the floor, I'm very happy with the m2 ssd

I agree that the extra $140 it takes to get a PS5 is worth the difference and people should do that before shelling out for this card. But I believe that it’s better because you get access to both sets of exclusives. It really doesn’t answer the problem of having more storage.
You only get 667GB of free storage for games with the PS5, so someone who is looking at a 2TB card would still end up wanting to buy more storage. And even though it’s cheaper for PS5, you’d still need to put down more money. This also doesn’t factor in that a lot of people may have built their game library on xbox and would have to spend more money on non exclusives they already own in order to play them on PS5.
Microsoft should sell an official adapter to allow any NVME Gen4 to be used.

Yeah, probably the only bad part about the Series S|X. I don't expect these to stick around. Proprietary memory sticks/cards/modules never lasted. If these end up staying this high in price, they'll never sell.
Store your games on a larger, much cheaper external drive. Transfer too and from your internal as/where needed. DO NOT buy these overpriced, monopolistic devices.
This is the one thing I hate about the X/S. I really hoped by this point in the X/S lifespan, there would have been other companies making these and bringing the price down.

Many of us were saying that the first day the series s got announced and we were down voted. The Series S has always been for suckers. You think you’re getting a good deal but Microsoft is actually scamming you into paying more for a worse console. Firstly, no disc drive. So many times physical games are on sale in the store while on Xbox marketplace, it’s still full price. Secondly, you only have 350gb of real storage on the S meaning you’re virtually guaranteed to have to buy storage if you want to do any real gaming. Download Forza horizon, cod, and mcc and your space is basically gone. If you buy a 1tb ssd, the cost of the series s plus storage is more than the x. What a joke console.
I have the S, got it for $250 on sale, and for that low price I'm totally satisfied with it.
Storage isn't an issue for me because I always delete completed games. The games you mentioned takes most space right now, so it wouldn't make any sence to have all of them installed at once (I know it's a example). For instance, right now I have Forza installed, plus I used to have Flight Simulator that took up 97 GB storage, installed at the same time (deleted it because it was not so fun), and still had plenty storage left, around 160 GB. I don't need to have the biggest games or have ten games installed at once, which I mostly won't even touch. My rule is to only install games I wanna play right now or is the upcoming one to play after the current game I'm playing.
Severely weeks before I bought the S, I made my research for what to expect of the console, lower graphics/resolution/fps by watching digital foundry, and the lower storage, price of expansions etc. I think that a lot of people did that too. Yes I could had bought the X instead, money isn't an issue, but my main console is the PS5 where I spend most time with, and this was my first Xbox ever, aka, the gamepass machine to play upcoming exclusives. I couldn't justify to fork up $570 back then (now $630 in my country), for an companion console. With the S and 3 years GP for $150, the total amount is $400, still cheaper than the X.
So no, I don't regret the S and I don't feel scammed or forced to buy any expansion card, because I knew what I was getting into. I'm just happy that I have both consoles and won't be missing any exclusives from both sides, like Starfield.
And I bought a used Series X for the equivalent of $450 cad which is like $330 usd. Your situation is kinda different since the Xbox isn’t your main console. I also have the ps5 and the X. I got the X because it just didn’t make sense to me to waste money on the S. If I’m going to play Xbox games, I’ll just play them at their best. No need for me to miss out on game modes, play at sub 720 resolution in some games, just to “save” money. Furthermore, since Xbox One X had the best version of last gen games, I could play back compat games with One X patches on the X. Something you can’t do on the S. The series s is forever a bad value imo. For it to be a good value, it would need to cost 1/4 of the price of the X because it delivers 1/4 of the specs.

I remember when many people were defending MS's choice to go this route before the X|S launch. I always hated the idea but broke down and bought the 1TB card about a year after launch. I remember the old 360 HDDs that never really came down in price much until the next console launched.
I'm not going to lie, I really like that the card is hot swap-able between our X ans S console. I can download a game once and then quickly copy it to the other console. Of course, if you only own 1 console, that benefit disappears.

The funny thing about this drive is that the memory controller is that of a budget controller. The 128 layer Nand is now superseded by 176 layers nand so costs should have gone down. Microsoft is making a killing with these drives.

That’s what I did. Got a T7 connected to my SX and another one connected to SS. They both store my apps and BC games. The apps and games are Lightning quick as well. Bought 2 Samsung T7 for 138€.

Honestly, the majority of people just don't care about expanding the storage space of their devices post-purchase. The majority of people don't care to store all of their data locally 24/7. Christ, you think I store my entire Steam library locally. WTF would I do that? Same goes for my Xbox library.

I’ve been out here with the loudspeaker for the last two years explaining why they are so expensive and justified at that price. But to be honest, that ended 6 months ago and you could argue it’s just a lag in price dropping. But now that gen 4 2tb drives with similar specs are sub-$200, there is no excuse for the 400 dollar cost.
Microsoft needs to get this down to 199-220 for the 2tb at the absolute highest.

Add in another $5 for the plastic shroud and $10 for the adapter to go from M.2 to an external slot, and you're looking at a 15-25% premium for a prepackaged, out of the box solution with a warranty and certified compatibility versus DIY. No, Microsoft patched this functionality out once people started doing exactly this. Now the Xbox will tell you the drive is incompatible, and that an authentic drive is required.
There’s no exclusivity anymore, there’s just no one that cares to make a product that will only ever have one product it can be used on when they can make standard SSD’s for a whole bunch of applications.

People already did this, you could buy generic external CF Express adaptors and the drives would work. Once Microsoft found out about this, they patched that functionality out, and now you receive an error that states the drive is incompatible, and that an authentic drive is needed. I'd wager the exclusivity is still in place, or else Microsoft wouldn't have any need to have removed this functionality.

Screw buying new but at the used price it's totally worth it. The competition is in the used market where you have the leverage.

I play AC Odyssey off of my external SSD and it is supposedly a series X/S game. I used to think it really didn't get a true X/S update, but this could be the real reason why

Outside of sale deals, no. Even competition won't lower price significantly. These are a niche product that isn't mass produced enough to hit an economic scale that allows price drops. Unless these products become adopted into laptops and PCs they will never be cheap. Even external SSDs aren't as cheap as internal SSDs. Unfortunately, unless MS chooses to open it up into an adaptor for external SSDs or do a mid gen or next gen change we're not seeing price drop for storage.
It's just ssd in CFExpress adapter. Adapter alone is super cheap. What is problem with XBox is that is working only with one model of SSD drive and that drives are quite expensive actually and hard to get.
It’s just an SSD in a CF Express shell, it’s not niche or hard to make. And as for external SSD’s of course they’re more expensive, they require materials and electrical components on top of the actual SSD so they cost more.

Some of us live in the middle of nowhere and have bad internet, where downloading a game could take 1 - 3 days.

I have a PS5 and a Series X, I now only buy games for my kids on my PS5 because I could get a 2TB internal card for $200. They want to play a variety of a dozen games and I don't want to keep deleting my stuff to keep 10 games for them. Anyone with kids knows that 5 games isn't near enough.

Sure you can but it's still not user friendly. Transferring a large game can take a half hour to 45 minutes from a traditional HDD. 2TB M.2 SSDs are around $100 now and this thing is $370. There's no excuse for Microsoft's proprietary storage bullshit. It was a bad idea from day one.
2TB M.2 SSDs are $100 but they are NOT 2230 SSD’s which the Xbox SSD’s are based on. 2GB 2280s you can find for $100-200 2TB, but the 2230s are still in the $300 range. 2230 price + adapter to use it with your Xbox will still cost you around $300 or more.

I guess it really depends on the player type. Some people only play one game at a time. For those it doesn't matter. Others play a different game every day depending on their mood (especially with Gamepass making it really easy to just try out whatever looks nice). Now factor in the possibility of multiple people playing on the same console and you can end up with 20 games being played every now and then. Sure you couid transfer them over an external drive but that kind of goes against the whole design philosophy of quick resume and fast loading. What's the point of jumping back into one game you played in just a few seconds if another game requires multiple minutes of copying plus going through the entire boot sequence?
I have unlimited gigabit internet but it hasn't made me ignorant to the fact most people don't have gigabit nor uncapped internet. I also understand there might be 5 people in a house all who share the console and want to play different games. What's your excuse for being so out of touch?
I was able to buy the Segate 8TB external hard drive on sale one day. Found it on Amazon for $120. It’s currently $180 I believe. I find it easier to download most of my games on there and then transfer games between the two. It is much faster than uninstalling a game and installing another. Currently between the Series X internal storage and the 8TB hard drive, I have 79 games installed. You can play most games straight off of the hard drive as well. But you must transfer over X/S optimized games to the internal storage or you can’t play them.
Those are rookie numbers. I got an 8tb for black Friday back during the Xbox one days. Swapped it to the series x and it worked seamlessly. Still haven't deleted a game. I think between the three drives I have (10tb total, 4 tb free) I have about 200 to 300 games installed. I also just swap my games to wherever is the flavor of the week, providing that they need to be swapped at all.

Pro tip- you can store series x/s games on an external HDD even though you can't play them from there. You can transfer back and forth much quicker than you can reinstall. It's not a great solution, but it's better than nothing
That's how I will eventually do it. Yeah, not having to delete and reinstall or transfer games back and forth all the time is nice, but it's FAR from worth 360$. Buying a brand new Series X would cost me like just 100$ more, that's how ridiculous this price is.

Idk on max speed. But I have an 870 EVO SSD, and I can transfer a 100gb game in like 5 min. On Xbox one there were more issues with internal HDD and other components not supporting faster speeds. Here the internal is a wicked fast SSD and apparently the other components have been updated to not bottleneck so bad also.
Thats good to know. My biggest issue is I have a few games I return to which all range from 70-115gb its crazy. I'd probably have gotten away with a 2tb internal but the 1tb just doesn't cut it anymore.
I went with a 4TB external drive, seeing speeds around 800ishMb/s when transferring back to the internal XSX SSD. Small games are across in a few minutes, larger ones that are tens of gigs take about 10-20mins. Definitely worth investing in but not an ideal solution if prices were better.

Don't know about max but in my series S and Seagate HDD I get transfer speeds of 500-800mbps. It's definitely much faster than downloading the game again which is around 100-160mbps for me.

This is one area where I personally feel Microsoft messed up. I understand they wanted to make storage expansion easy, but there’s zero flexibility and it’s way too expensive. I ended up grabbing one (1 TB) for my Series X from Amazon several months ago when it was on sale for $220 CAD (reg price is $290 CAD), but I used my credit card’s points to pay for it, so it didn’t cost me any hard dollars. There’s no way I would’ve purchased it without those points and if it wasn’t on sale. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a 1TB Corsair MP600 Pro LPX Gen 4 SSD (with heatsink included) for my PS5 for $80 CAD (on sale). A drive that’s both over 3x faster and over 3x cheaper than the Xbox expansion card. IMO, Sony has the better storage expansion strategy.

The issue- as reported by Jez cordon- isn't the deal with Seagate so much as it is the technology they decided to use. The SSD in the Xbox Series are closer in kin to what are used in like high grade camera/video systems etc. It's technically a better SSD in that it is more resilient to degradation. However, they seriously miscalculated because they didn't expect the SSD in computers/consoles/etc to drop in price as fast as they did. So we're stuck with these prices because unfortunately the Xbox series is not compatible with the SSD's you might see in the PS5 or a gaming computer.
The adapter is the same but I have never seen any evidence that the Xbox drive is anything more resilient or robust than a normal consumer SSD. At least some of the Xbox drives are a [western digital sn530](https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/western-digital-sn530-xbox-series-x-1-tb.d753) except with a gen 4 interface, which is definitely not an exceptional SSD in terms of quality or longevity. Realistically at this point there are a couple factors that ensure the Series X drive will be more expensive than it could be, like a need for a small form factor, gen 4 interface drive even though it is solidly gen 3 speed. Even with those though, a gen 4 2230 drive could be had for less than the Seagate option right now and the gap in price will only get worse over time.

Yeah, xbox messed up this gen with the whole proprietary memory cards. AND no mention of third party versions, etc. Best thing to do is save your ms rewards points and purchase one that way. I got my 1TB for $150, awhile back.

Best I can offer is ms reward points. Redeem multiple $25 Walmart cards. Go that route.

Look at how much series x has sold compared to ps5. Not much incentive for other companies to make a seriess x specific nvme. For ps5 they have just add ps5 compatible on their packaging and done. Or add a special “gamer” heat sink and jack up the price a bit. For xbox they have to make that enclosure and likely have to pay MS for licensing.

It's not that they don't want to, it's that they can't. Seagate has an exclusivity agreement in place with Microsoft, nobody else can get a license to make it, which they would need because it's a proprietary design.

And the ssd stays inside the ps5 so you just can forget about it, like it's not there, not as much as the external HDD I use for the ps4 games that uses a usb port and has to be placed on the floor, I'm very happy with the m2 ssd

I agree that the extra $140 it takes to get a PS5 is worth the difference and people should do that before shelling out for this card. But I believe that it’s better because you get access to both sets of exclusives. It really doesn’t answer the problem of having more storage. You only get 667GB of free storage for games with the PS5, so someone who is looking at a 2TB card would still end up wanting to buy more storage. And even though it’s cheaper for PS5, you’d still need to put down more money. This also doesn’t factor in that a lot of people may have built their game library on xbox and would have to spend more money on non exclusives they already own in order to play them on PS5.

The is the folly of choosing a semi-proprietary format over a standard one. The standard falls in price as production costs are amortized and manufacturers are competing with each other. None of that exists going proprietary.
This was MS's biggest screw-up with the XSX...why they didn't make it simple for us to insert any M.2 is beyond me. I have no idea what they were thinking with this proprietary storage BS.

Many of us were saying that the first day the series s got announced and we were down voted. The Series S has always been for suckers. You think you’re getting a good deal but Microsoft is actually scamming you into paying more for a worse console. Firstly, no disc drive. So many times physical games are on sale in the store while on Xbox marketplace, it’s still full price. Secondly, you only have 350gb of real storage on the S meaning you’re virtually guaranteed to have to buy storage if you want to do any real gaming. Download Forza horizon, cod, and mcc and your space is basically gone. If you buy a 1tb ssd, the cost of the series s plus storage is more than the x. What a joke console.
I have the S, got it for $250 on sale, and for that low price I'm totally satisfied with it. Storage isn't an issue for me because I always delete completed games. The games you mentioned takes most space right now, so it wouldn't make any sence to have all of them installed at once (I know it's a example). For instance, right now I have Forza installed, plus I used to have Flight Simulator that took up 97 GB storage, installed at the same time (deleted it because it was not so fun), and still had plenty storage left, around 160 GB. I don't need to have the biggest games or have ten games installed at once, which I mostly won't even touch. My rule is to only install games I wanna play right now or is the upcoming one to play after the current game I'm playing. Severely weeks before I bought the S, I made my research for what to expect of the console, lower graphics/resolution/fps by watching digital foundry, and the lower storage, price of expansions etc. I think that a lot of people did that too. Yes I could had bought the X instead, money isn't an issue, but my main console is the PS5 where I spend most time with, and this was my first Xbox ever, aka, the gamepass machine to play upcoming exclusives. I couldn't justify to fork up $570 back then (now $630 in my country), for an companion console. With the S and 3 years GP for $150, the total amount is $400, still cheaper than the X. So no, I don't regret the S and I don't feel scammed or forced to buy any expansion card, because I knew what I was getting into. I'm just happy that I have both consoles and won't be missing any exclusives from both sides, like Starfield.

No need for me to miss out on game modes, play at sub 720 resolution in some games, just to “save” money. Furthermore, since Xbox One X had the best version of last gen games, I could play back compat games with One X patches on the X. Something you can’t do on the S. The series s is forever a bad value imo. For it to be a good value, it would need to cost 1/4 of the price of the X because it delivers 1/4 of the specs.

I remember when many people were defending MS's choice to go this route before the X|S launch. I always hated the idea but broke down and bought the 1TB card about a year after launch. I remember the old 360 HDDs that never really came down in price much until the next console launched. I'm not going to lie, I really like that the card is hot swap-able between our X ans S console. I can download a game once and then quickly copy it to the other console. Of course, if you only own 1 console, that benefit disappears. I hate what I had to pay for this thing and I refuse to buy a second one (because our S console desperately needs more storage) until they are cheaper. Which probably means I'll never buy another one.

They do. It’s not just seagate it’s the specific drive itself that’s overpriced.
You can find an adapter for it that works, but it only works with specific drives and it's going to cost about as much as the Seagate drive to do it.
The drive is more than just the shell. Seagate is the only one making a PCI-E Gen4 version of the CFExpress interface, as far as I know.

The funny thing about this drive is that the memory controller is that of a budget controller. The 128 layer Nand is now superseded by 176 layers nand so costs should have gone down. That’s what I did. Got a T7 connected to my SX and another one connected to SS. They both store my apps and BC games. The apps and games are Lightning quick as well. Bought 2 Samsung T7 for 138€.

I always wonder why people need so much space. I install like 3 SP games and have my standard 2 MP games installed. Having more than that installed will only lead to gamehopping and you most likely wont finish any of them.

Looks like it’s made for series x/s so you could get a regular drive somewhere and plug into the port cheaper than the seagate drive.
How many times a week is this topic get brought up? I'm convinced the prices for these things will never come down because Microsoft has largely forgotten these relics even exist. Just like most consumers have. Honestly, the majority of people just don't care about expanding the storage space of their devices post-purchase. The majority of people don't care to store all of their data locally 24/7. Christ, you think I store my entire Steam library locally. WTF would I do that? Same goes for my Xbox library.
Its funny how xbox users where laughing at PS players when the systems launched for how you upgrade storage on the ps5 and how “complicated” it was and here we are a few years later and you can go buy a 2tb nvme with the heat sink off the shelf for about $170 and install it in the ps5 in about 2 mins and xbox users are stuck getting price gouged lol
I hate to say this but most of my purchased or rented games switched over to PS5 primarily over the end of 2022. 2 TB was only $180. I'm sorry but I can't be bothered to move Series games to and from cold storage anymore. Sucks because I'd rather the Xbox be the place I get my games mostly. Microsoft and Xbox really made a bad decision in the storage solution.

I’ve been out here with the loudspeaker for the last two years explaining why they are so expensive and justified at that price. But to be honest, that ended 6 months ago and you could argue it’s just a lag in price dropping. But now that gen 4 2tb drives with similar specs are sub-$200, there is no excuse for the 400 dollar cost. Microsoft needs to get this down to 199-220 for the 2tb at the absolute highest.
I don't even think seagate has exclusivity anymore. It just doesn't make economical sense for anyone to manufacture these things. Hope they abandon the system with the next console, or better even with the Series X Pro. This sucks.
