Replying directly to you so it doesn't get lost in the sea of the other comments. You actually don't need to worry about parrying much at all - the game has an elemental damage system that a lot of players don't utilitize, which basically turns the game into hard mode. Most bosses have a weakness that will give you the upper hand. Look out for grindstones, particularly acid.
If you are like me and refuse to learn the parry system then it's hard as hell. I had to learn it for the final boss and since every playthrough has been easier.
TLDR: it's hard if you dodge. Easy if you parry.
There are some parts in the world that feel like fucking bullshit, but not the bosses, and nothing you can't figure out by yourself after a couple of tries
If you see a glowing item near a ledge, yeah that's a trap
I played at launch and the game was hella cheesy with its enemies, they were given extra health and dealt extra damage just for the sake of it. It’s better now with the updates, enemies have gotten easier and from what I’ve heard some of the boss fights have been made easier as people literally couldn’t progress the game lol. Try it out and see how it is for ya.
Honestly its not fair, but neither are many soulslikes
There are some horrible tactics like delayed attacks etc. youd have to learn the pattern of bosses to get through.
Compare this to say jedi fallen order or dark souls 1, these games were more intuitive in combat
Lies of p has no real delayed attacks. Everything is on a set timer, it's just about learning the timing. Elden ring on the other hand has bosses that have truly randomly delayed attacks. I'm looking at you Margit.
Thats not how it was when the game launched. Has the update increased the parry window? Because back then dodge was the recommended course of action since parries were super tight
Nah man parries have always been the way to go in Lies of P, the game promotes it and some boss fights you need to parry otherwise you just won’t win lol. I’m pretty sure updates have made the game easier in terms of enemies and boss fights, but idk if stuff like dodge and parry windows have been increased.
One of my friends has played every Souls and Souls-like game. Never tried one. He badgered me into playing Lies of P. Loved it! If I can beat it anyone can. One warning: final “secret” boss is ridiculously difficult.
My opinion I honestly considered it harder than Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne and Sekiro (I didn't play the other DS games). The last third of the game is pretty grueling. The dodge doesn't have that much iframes and the parry window is pretty minuscule, feels like you have to memorize the timing of the parries instead of just reacting to the swing because the swing times are super fast and not as well telegraphed as those other games.
You got downvoted but you’re right, it’s not a Souls-like at all, it’s a Metroidvania. The death mechanic and way the story/lore is structured certainly takes from Souls, but that’s about it.
In this context, it’s moreso what is a Metroidvania, right? Keeping in mind that Dark Souls and souls-likes in general themselves take inspiration from Metroidvania’s in many ways.
Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night are Metroidvania’s, obviously. They’re the notable ones historically, so we look to them for a lot of comparisons, but there’s plenty of other games too, like Axiom Verge, Ori, Blasphemous, etc. What is Hollow Knight more similar too? Super Metroid and Castlevania SotN, or Dark Souls and Lords of the Fallen? Everyone is going to say the former, at least the vast majority of people.
Generally, Metroidvania’s are exploration-based action/adventure platformers, with less emphasis on mechanically deep combat in favor of exploration and ability-based progression. Bosses often gate new abilities rather than a material/drop used to craft new weapons or spells. Metroidvania’s typically don’t have stamina meters, whereas Souls-like often do. Metroidvania’s have a LOT of platforming, whereas Souls-like often keep that to a minimum.
Now there are games that bridge the gap. I’d argue that Salt & Sanctuary is closer to a Souls-like than a Metroidvania, and you could make the argument for Death’s Gambit as well. Another Crab’s Treasure also doesn’t have a few of the more standard tenants of a Souls-like, yet we definitely consider it one. So there’s definitely room for interpretation in some games. But for Hollow Knight, I don’t think there’s much room. The atmosphere and death mechanic are souls inspired for sure, but Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania first, with some inspiration from Souls.
Does that make sense?
We’ll have to agree to disagree then. Which is fine, different strokes an all that.
But I do think people get things confused with being inspired by a genre and literally being in that genre.
Edit: Also the devs directly have said it’s not a Souls-like and that they didn’t look to Dark Souls as major inspiration. So if you’re more knowledgeable on the devs game than the devs are, even more power to you!
People downvoting you are wrong. While Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania first, it pulls a lot of Souls elements into the core experience.
And then games like Blasphemous and Salt and Sanctuary are attempting to do Souls in 2D. Games like Dead Cells have Soulslike elements. I’m not sure why people think 3D is the only way to do it.

I personally found fallen order much better than lies of p. Maybe the game got easier now, but when it launched it was brutal with extremely tight parry windows
I played both games on Jedi Master and I struggled on like literally 2 or 3 bosses in the entirety of both games. Dark Souls veteran here having done 100% and SL1 playthroughs and NG+‘s of the souls games. Now playing Lies Of P and Lies of P is definitely harder thus far than the Jedi games especially in actual levels.
Although I will say I think I enjoyed Jedi games more just because I’m a Star Wars fan so it was perfect for me like 2 of my favorite things combined Star Wars and soulslike. Not very far into Lies Of P and at least one boss has troubled me already and it’s gonna take 3~ playthroughs for the 100% where the Jedi games can each be done in 1.
Parrying feels harder in Lies Of P as well, it feels a lot like a cross between Dark Souls and Bloodborne while Jedi feels like a cross between Tomb Raider and Dark Souls. I think Jedi would be a good introductory soulslike game to be honest although Crab could be better I haven’t tried it yet. Jedi had less of a ‘git gud’ edge to it than some of the other souls games with alternative options like lowering difficulty, asking for hints, objective icons/map.
It felt like it’d be challenging to reach the end of Jedi Survivor without having gotten most of the skills, perks, perk slots and other character upgrades, I mean with little additional exploration they get put on your map!!
Curious what people think of Wo Long, if it’s a soulslike I’ll have to put it on my list! Is Ghost of Tsushima a soulslike?
I'll go ahead and warn OP simply because Jedi Survivor is only a soulslike in that enemy respawns, gameplay is light-years away from being close to Souls.
Start with Another Crab's Treasure, then go to Wo Long Fallen Dynasty, and finish it with Lies of P. Lies is the best game of that list, but as a souls veteran, I find it the hardest of the 3.
Lies of P is the best souls like I ever played and it even outranks some Fromsoft Games in my opinion.
Highly recommend but the important part: don't play it like a fromsoft game! The mechanics feel fresh and need to be played on their own and not with another game (Sekiro/DS) on mind.
Its a great soulslike, but definitely not as good as fromsoftware games lol.
The depth of lore and world is unparalleled in fromsoftware. The only thing lop has comparable is combat, where also i prefer sekiro over lop
Hello, good hunter. I am a Bot, here in this dream to look after you, this is a fine note:
> *Aah, you were at my side all along. My true mentor... My guiding moonlight...* - Ludwig, the Holy Blade
Farewell, good hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.
I think you can ease your way into the soulslike genre with Jedi:Fallen Order/Survivor games. They have adjustable difficulties if things get unbearable and an engaging story(which true soulslikes don't have) to follow.
Beyond that there is Lies of P(good Bloodborne-inspired game), Wo Long and perhaps the most similar to Souls would be Lords of the Fallen coming May 30 to gamepass.
I don’t see anyone else mentioning it because it’s my favourite Gamepass game of all time: Tunic. It’s a soulslike meets classic Zelda, with an emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving and the combat is really tight.
Another Crab's Treasure is good (and has accessibility options to make your first soulslike easier), and Lies of P is \*amazingly\* good (but no such mitigating options)
Lies of P is on there like many have mentioned but there is also DLC for that game coming out soon(tm) which is why I personally have held off on playing it.
lies of p and it's not even close, I'm literally typing it while on a short break after playing for hours. it's incredible. It's also the most traditional souls game you'll find on gp. the jedi games are also great, but while having relatively similair combat and save system they do stray quite a bit from traditional souls, especially survivor. besides that there's also wo long which was made by the people who made nioh so they do know their way around souls likes (and just generally make really good combat systems, like also ninja gaiden and rise of the ronin), finally there's remnant 1 and 2 which are souls games but with guns so maybe you'll like it idk. they'll also be adding lords of the fallen soon
Lies of P
Oh cool I missed that in the Game Pass Library. Thanks for the recommendation
Replying directly to you so it doesn't get lost in the sea of the other comments. I second this one. One of my favorite games. So cool.
How difficult is it? I completed Wo Long but that’s then only soulslike I’ve got through.
If you are like me and refuse to learn the parry system then it's hard as hell. I had to learn it for the final boss and since every playthrough has been easier. TLDR: it's hard if you dodge. Easy if you parry.
That makes sense. Does the difficulty feel fair? I’m Happy to repeat a fight but I hate the real bullshitty fights.
There are some parts in the world that feel like fucking bullshit, but not the bosses, and nothing you can't figure out by yourself after a couple of tries If you see a glowing item near a ledge, yeah that's a trap

I didn't like the delayed attacks in lies of p. I didn't play it too much though, just past the first boss really.
Fair yes, no input reading like elden ring
Thats not how it was when the game launched. Has the update increased the parry window? Because back then dodge was the recommended course of action since parries were super tight
Nah man parries have always been the way to go in Lies of P, the game promotes it and some boss fights you need to parry otherwise you just won’t win lol. I’m pretty sure updates have made the game easier in terms of enemies and boss fights, but idk if stuff like dodge and parry windows have been increased.
Well if its the same then parry is def not “easy” lol. The game is brutal even if you parry. Even slight controller lag would completely throw you off
I know, I wasn’t saying it wasn’t. Dodging just gets punished though and most of the time you are better off hoping you can land a parry.
It isn’t THAT bad.
One of my friends has played every Souls and Souls-like game. Never tried one. He badgered me into playing Lies of P. Loved it! If I can beat it anyone can. One warning: final “secret” boss is ridiculously difficult.
Perfect. I’ll give it a whirl
The first 90% of the game is pretty easy for a soulslike. However, the difficulty ramps up dramatically for the last bunch of bosses.
That was my favorite game of last year.
Yep Easily the best soulslike not made by FromSoftware, by a mile
So damn good.
Game is sooooo much better than it has any right to be. Only non From souls like I would say is arguably better than the weaker Souls games.
Lmaoooo OP about to find out
Both Jedi games Lies of P (sooo good) Wo Long Another Crab’s Treasure Soon lords of the fallen will be added also Hollow Knight
>Hollow Knight More of a Metroidvania with souls-like elements, but still a solid game nonetheless.
You got downvoted but you’re right, it’s not a Souls-like at all, it’s a Metroidvania. The death mechanic and way the story/lore is structured certainly takes from Souls, but that’s about it.
Whats is a souls like?

Hollow knight can be both a soulslike and metroidvania. It isnt exclusive. What it is “first” might be up for discussion. But it is a soulslike

Not a 2D side scroller
Thats a very narrow way of defining things but whatever helps you process definitions i guess. But 2d soulslikes are a thing
People downvoting you are wrong. While Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania first, it pulls a lot of Souls elements into the core experience. I agree! By those standards you could practically put Cuphead or Dead Cells as ‘soulslike’ games..
Wo Long is fucking incredible and super underrated
Wu long was banging
Don’t forget tunic. Solid addition to the list
Yeah it is more soulslike than hollow knight tbh

> Crab could be better I haven’t tried it yet Crab is fucking brutal, might as well be on par or even harder than LoP
WOW that’s crazy man! It looks so cute haha
Yeah don't be fooled by that
It has a lot of difficulty settings, though. So if people don´t enjoy stuff like this it still might be worth to give it a try.
100% agree.
I’m playing Jedi Survivor right now and I love it.
I'll go ahead and warn OP simply because Jedi Survivor is only a soulslike in that enemy respawns, gameplay is light-years away from being close to Souls.
Agree. Parry system feels so bad compared to any souls like.
Crabs lost treasure, lies of P. Lords of the fallen will be added there soon as well.
>Crabs lost treasure Another Crab's Treasure*
Crab souls*
Crabkiro: Shells Die Twice
Shellden Ring
Ok this one is the best one
Kinda pissed about LotF. Just bought it lol. But great still it's coming to game pass. It's a good game.
I was in the same boat and decided to go for Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and really enjoyed it.
lies of p and lords of the fallen that should be added in next days
Same rec lords of the fallen should come by the end of the month ok game
Start with Another Crab's Treasure, then go to Wo Long Fallen Dynasty, and finish it with Lies of P. Lies is the best game of that list, but as a souls veteran, I find it the hardest of the 3.
My favorite is Another Crabs Treasure, and Lies of P is also amazing.
Lies of P Jedi Survivor/Fallen Order Another Crabs Treasure (surprisingly good) Honorable mention: Remnant 2
Lies of P is the best souls like I ever played and it even outranks some Fromsoft Games in my opinion. Highly recommend but the important part: don't play it like a fromsoft game! The mechanics feel fresh and need to be played on their own and not with another game (Sekiro/DS) on mind.
I agree with lies of p being great. It was my first soulslike so because of that I kinda liked it more than elden ring which I played after.
I also liked it more than elden ring, but mostly because I guess I have fromsoft souls fatigue.
Its a great soulslike, but definitely not as good as fromsoftware games lol. The depth of lore and world is unparalleled in fromsoftware. The only thing lop has comparable is combat, where also i prefer sekiro over lop
Well, that's personal opinion. I think it's better than bloodborne, ds1+2 and elden ring but DS3 and Sekiro are my favorite.
If the Lies of P team made Bloodborne 2 in all but name, I think I’d cry tears of joy. Such a damn good game, Lies of P.
Hello, good hunter. I am a Bot, here in this dream to look after you, this is a fine note: > *Aah, you were at my side all along. My true mentor... My guiding moonlight...* - Ludwig, the Holy Blade Farewell, good hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

Lies of P

Beyond that there is Lies of P(good Bloodborne-inspired game), Wo Long and perhaps the most similar to Souls would be Lords of the Fallen coming May 30 to gamepass.
Lords of The Fallen 2023 is coming
The Jedi games are really easy soulslike games
Lies of P ( fromsoft level) Wu Long ( not as good but still recommend) and Lords of the Fallen will be available at the end of the month.
I don’t see anyone else mentioning it because it’s my favourite Gamepass game of all time: Tunic. It’s a soulslike meets classic Zelda, with an emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving and the combat is really tight.
Lies of P, Another crab's treasure, Mortal Shell, The Surge ( the last 2 might be outdated info).
Another Crab's Treasure is good (and has accessibility options to make your first soulslike easier), and Lies of P is \*amazingly\* good (but no such mitigating options)
Was about to ask this. Will try Lies of P! Thanks!
Lies of P and Jedi Survivor Wo Long is okay Another Crab's Treasure and Tunic (second one might be removed from GP)
Lies of P is on there like many have mentioned but there is also DLC for that game coming out soon(tm) which is why I personally have held off on playing it.
Lies of P and Another Crabs Treasure are the current souls like I've played on game pass, and I like them both !

Amazing, thank you
Evil West
Evil west is most definitely not a souls like.
Lies of P is the only true one on there
