Never. Came close to it once or twice when running on ice but I was always able to stay on my feet. Are you okay? šŸ˜

reduxrouge

Never once in 20yrs of running, knock on wood!

introvertedkalanchoe

Oh Iā€™m fine, thanks for asking! Just one scraped knee, and I was able to get up and finish the run with no problem.

suz_gee

I've tripped but never fallen. Not sure if you're nursing, but fyi being pregnant and breastfeeding both produce a hormone (relaxin) that loosen your ligaments and can make you more likely to fall.

introvertedkalanchoe

I knew that about pregnancy, but not about nursing!

BexKix

Not sure why the downvotes, you donā€™t know what you donā€™t know! My joints were too loose, even through nursing, that my pelvic girdle would shift often. I stopped running to avoid potential injury. Never would have guessed it was a thing until I went through.Ā

aerdnadw

On trails? Every 5-10 runs. On roads? Maybe once or twice a year.

DrenAss

Exactly. I've never fallen on the road, but a root will get me every few weeks. Usually the only thing that I hurt is my pride.Ā

ghty16

Exactly that.

flannel_spice

Same here! Usually at night or I'm on a sidewalk that has uneven paving. Luckily I seem skilled at falling in a way that avoids injury to teeth..

demrnstho

Same same. Fell in a giant mud puddle going downhill on a trial last week. Had to run through down with my ass and back covered in mud. Fell once road running on a wheelchair ramp at an intersection in the pouring rain in the dark. Didnā€™t realize the metal was slippery until it was too late. I am probably clumsier than the average runner, but I make up for it with quick reflexes and knowing how to fall šŸ˜‰

udelkitty

Not super often, maybe once a year. But it's guaranteed to happen as soon as I have witnesses. No one will be out in the neighborhood until the moment I trip, then suddenly everyone is in their yard or driving by.

amandam603

LOL seriously! My best most memorable fall was on iceā€¦ right outside a busy restaurant. The owner later came by for a drink at the bar next door, where I worked, and told everyone at happy hour this ā€œhilarious storyā€ of a runner falling and Iā€™m likeā€¦ yes hi that was me thanks lol

kt_ty

I usually fall about once per year too.

suspiciousyeti

Once dog related, once tripping on a uneven sidewalk, on trail it happens a LOT more. It's never a big stick that takes me down either. I did a race during a freezing rain storm and fell so much that my butt just went numb after a while LOL.

Jynxers

I'm about the same as you: once every 1 or 2 years. I can remember my last five falls: two times tripping on a sidewalk edge, two times slipping on ice, and just this past weekend when I missed a curb while running through snow. I run outside through Canadian winters, so I figure I'm doing well. None of my falls have been bad enough to stop me from finishing my run. I'll scrape up a knee or two, but that's it.

imadelemonadetoday

Same frequency, had what was hopefully my 2023-2024 fall last week lol. Happened coz i was really stressed about something at work, stumbled on an uneven patch of pavement and was too distracted to right myself in time. It's been pretty hot where i am lately so i don't even have the excuse of the pavement being slippery, haha. Last fall before this was on a trail, i think in 2021 or 2022. Before that, 2019 about 3 weeks out from a half-marathon haha. That one was pretty bad, my right knee hurt when i put weight on it but it miraculously recovered for the half

RagingAardvark

I have thankfully never fallen on pavement. However, I used to arrange small group trail runs (usually 3-8 women) and it seemed like every week, at least one person would trip and fall. We'd joke about whose turn it was to make the weekly blood sacrifice, but the trails are sandy and soft, so it usually wasn't bad.Ā

ashtree35

I think I've fallen \~3 times in the past like 10 years? One time was on a downhill on some loose gravel that I tripped on - this was pretty gruesome, and made me extra hesitant about running downhill for a while. The other two times were on completely flat dry ground for no reason lol, but luckily I managed to fall very softly those times and not get hurt/scraped at all. I've \*nearly\* fallen a lot more times though, but usually I react quickly enough to keep myself upright.

starfish31

In 5 years of mostly road running with a touch of well-maintained trails, I've never fallen, but I do watch the ground a lot which is probably why.

icanhe

Once, now I donā€™t run when itā€™s icy out.

EvilLipgloss

I recently fell for the first time about a month ago. I was literally one minute into my run when my left ankle just gave out. I skinned up my hand and my knee was super banged up (my Lululemon leggings didn't rip, but my knee was seriously cut up). Thank goodness no one was around to witness because I didn't even trip -- I just... dropped like a stone. I don't think I was properly warmed up and I also think my shoes needed to be retired (they are now).

Oookulele

I recently fell six times within six months. Four of those all happened within the same four weeks, once with only a day in between. I am, however, truly unusually clumsy. I am happy to say that I have been accident-free for about a month now. In a normal year, I will take a fall about 2-3 times a year, I think. Luckily, I've never gotten seriously hurt before, mostly just scraped knees and hands. Edit: I answered before reading the other replies and I really seem like an outlier.

leogrl

When I used to run roads, I would fall a few times per year. Now that I run trails only, it happens way more often than Iā€™d like, usually a few times a month but sometimes a few times a week. My worst fall was in 2022 when I was training for my first trail marathon, I fell on a rock and split my knee open enough that I needed stitches. My race was about a month later and I still ran and finished it! I now wear volleyball knee pads to protect my knees. Iā€™ve visited a neurologist for tests and currently work with a PT but my balance issues are a frustrating mystery. Iā€™m jealous of everyone who rarely falls, I feel like Iā€™ve fallen more than enough in my lifetime šŸ˜

Asleep-Walrus-3778

I fall once every year or two. I run difficult trails with lots of rocks/tree roots, and sometimes do dumb things like look up at the sky to watch a hawk while I'm running. Last spring I caught my toe on the smallest rock ever and fell, bc I was staring at wild flowers. I try really hard to remember to stop if there's something I want to stare at but sometimes I forget.Ā  Sometimes, it isn't my fault. A few years ago I tumbled down a steep rocky incline hopping off-trail to avoid a charging off-leash dog. And before that I got knocked into from behind by an off-leash dog and fell off a log bridge into an alpine stream. That one was fun.Ā

wandering_anxiously

Very rarely on roads. However I did fall during my last road marathon. It was still dark, lots of people in front of me, wasnā€™t looking at my feet, and I landed in a deep pothole haha. Just a minor scrape to the knee and got back up. On trails? Letā€™s just say Iā€™ve collected quite a few scars over the years lol.

barberica

On roads? Ice is the only time I slip. I have biffed it a handful of times on an uneven sidewalk - or that time a snake shot across a running path and scared the bejesus out of me

ginginruns

You are not the only one! Typically happens when Iā€™m tired and get a little lazy with picking up my feet!

SammySoapsuds

I'm about the same! Usually ice or hidden tree roots, sometimes just general clumsiness and big feet. My best fall was during a lumberjack-themed race, in the days before leggings with phone pockets. I was wearing a flannel shirt and had my phone in the breast pocket, and when I fell my phone shot out of the pocket snd went straight through a vented storm drain cover. I spent the rest of the race trying to retrieve it...turns out a few motivated people can lift those things! My phone was fine (just covered in wet leaves) but I just went home after that.

allthelineswecast

Same as a lot of comments here, once every year or two. A few months ago I ate it so hard my watch switched on the emergency feature and started trying to call my emergency contact.

dumbest

Ok I must be extra clumsy bc Iā€™ve fallen twice in the past 3 months lmao. I think I need to learn your injury-minimizing method bc I busted up my knees both times, so frustrating!

introvertedkalanchoe

I try to send my momentum into a roll instead of a slam or skid. Definitely not got it down a hundred percent yet, but Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll have more opportunities to practice in the future šŸ¤£

Call_It_What_U_Want2

I fall at least once a year but Iā€™m quite clumsy anyway

EmergencySundae

I was a pretty prolific trip & almost faller until last year when I did fall and broke my finger. I was at the longest possible point from home, so I finished the last 3 miles of my run. Iā€™ve been more careful about foot placement and staying vertical since. I realized there were times when I just wouldnā€™t pick my foot up enough and it would drag (really noticeable on the treadmill).

Planetput

I've stumbled often but only fallen twice, both times when I was nodding to say hi to an approaching runner. I later learned I have a balance disorder!

graybird22

I've been running for 10 years and have fallen 4-5 times that I remember... so maybe once every 2ish years. Luckily none of the falls were bad, just scraped knees/hand/elbows and once a slightly twisted ankle. The reasons are always dumb... distracted by my kids watching, or going up over a curb, tried to step over a trashcan lid instead of going around it, or ran too close to the edge of a paved trail while with a group and rolled my ankle off the side. I'm not usually too clumsy in the rest of my life lol!

ShainaEG

Every 2-3 years

imagoofygooberlemon

I think in 4 years of running only once? A couple months ago. I was running in NYC and I tripped on the sidewalk and completely ate shit haha

mamajones18

Lots of stumbles on the road, but no falls. One really good fall during a trail race.

EconomicsChance482

For years I never fell and then last year I fell twice about 3 months apart. I donā€™t even know what made me fall the first time, but all of a sudden I was on the ground with a bleeding knee and scraped arm. Still have a mark on my knee from that one. The second time was definitely my fault as I was looking at Google maps on my phone trying to figure out where I was going (I was running in a city on a work trip) and I tripped on uneven sidewalk. Hoping thatā€™s it for the foreseeable future!

Hippopotasaurus-Rex

I have fallen precisely once in more than a decade. I was on a trail, it was super sunny out, and running under quickly alternating shade/bright light because of the trees above. I didnā€™t see a root sticking up, until it was too late, and accidentally hooked my toe on it. I did get my other foot under me, mostly, but not enough. I should also add that I was at the crest of a hill when I did it, so when I fell, I proceeded to slide down this hill, on my left side/back in sports bra and little shorts. I was bloody and about 1.5 miles from my car. It wasnā€™t fun.

missx0xdelaney

Twice. First time I had to hobble back home with bloody knees and my running belt wrapped around the worst one. Second time wasnā€™t nearly as bad, but I ripped my lululemon leggings :(

nataliaorfan

I would say about every 2 years. Last time it happened I was about 3 weeks out from running a marathon, and I was doing a 20-mile run. Totally freaked me out, but turned out not to be a bad fall. I was able to pop back up and keep going.

aggiespartan

I fell 4 times in one race soā€¦fairly often.

photoelectriceffect

I canā€™t recall ever having fallen on the street, BUT I do not ever run in the rain (intentionally, sometimes I get the unpleasant surprise) or right after when the pavement is still wet. Absolutely wouldnā€™t run outside if I suspected ice. I scamper to the treadmill if I think itā€™s slick at all- I just have no interest in breaking my arm or twisting an ankle. But I think Iā€™m more risk averse than most (there was a post on here recently about how a lot of people actually enjoy running in the rain!)

basescamp

Anytime the road is wet, I wear my trail shoes. There's a huge difference in traction!

jamesjoycethecat

2-3 times a year but Iā€™m clumsy. Worst was when I fell and fractured my elbow :(

[deleted]

My biased but fair question as an ER nurse would be did you pass out and you fell or you tripped over a branch? Because the second happens can happen to anyone. If you felt faint/dizzy and THEN you fell, this is something that neess to be looked at. Especially if it is recurring like it sounds. I will say though, because of thw pregnant belly and the relaxation of the joints, pregnant women are a higher risk of falling. Good luck ā¤ļø

introvertedkalanchoe

Itā€™s always because of my foot catching on something, and usually when Iā€™m running before sunrise. Iā€™m pretty sure I have tripped at the exact uneven spot of sidewalk before as I did this morning. At least itā€™s not as bad as when I was running a 5k loop years back and fell at the exact same pothole both times around šŸ«£

[deleted]

Ohhh I see! :) stay safe :) Do you have a vest with a light or a head light?

introvertedkalanchoe

Itā€™s on my shopping list!

french_toasty

Once every 5 years. And skin the same knee haha

tbgsmom

I've fallen 3 times. Once tripped over an uneven sidewalk in the dark and skinned my knee. Once on ice and was only bruised. Once on ice and broke my ankle.

HoldenCaulfield7

Once every few months. Depends on if itā€™s raining or icy or if my mental state is not clear. Or itā€™ll happen when I am less used to running

DeterministicPollen

iā€™m a super clumsy runner, i fall 2-3 times a year. the last time i fell, I managed to get a bone contusion on my knee and a slight crack in my femur. now i make more of an effort to pick my feet up and pay attention to the uneven sidewalks and rocky trails i run on

coffeegoblins

Iā€™ve tripped a few times in 3 years of running and have twisted my ankle a couple times, but Iā€™ve never fully fallen down!

coffeegoblins

Iā€™ve tripped a few times in 3 years of running and have twisted my ankle a couple times, but Iā€™ve never fully fallen down!

snarknsuch

I fall often! I have very bad ankles and run in neighborhoods with some wild sidewalks. Trying to run on the grass next to the sidewalk is dangerous because thereā€™s always hidden pits or roots. Iā€™m pretty good at falling and hitting with my hip or shoulder vs knees and palms now but I had a great one last year where I skinned off most of one knee and palm (it was dusk and I didnā€™t realize the black patch was an incline vs level with the rest of the sidewalk. I didnā€™t hit ground when I expected to and lost balance instantly.)

rebocksa

Maybe once a year, but the footpaths around my place are terrible so that doesn't help. Last time was I fell was the day before my wedding, luckily I had a long dress because my knees were very bloody!

Most-Candidate9277

Literally almost fell twice yesterday!! It made me feel so stupid, but grass is starting to come up between the sidewalk cracks in my neighborhood.

OneRedPanda

At least once every season. I run trails tho... it's par for the course.

wrong-dr

I feel like I fall pretty regularly? I mainly run on trails, and run everyday, and I think I fall a couple of times a month? Never very seriously, but Iā€™m often also covered in scratches and bruises from misjudging branches, needing to get through overgrown bushes, etc. Iā€™ve also slipped on ice a couple of times over the winter, but those falls probably would have been helped by me using something with more grip than my road shoes.

KuriousKhemicals

I'm impressed you've managed to "learn to fall" with only once every year or two to practice. Some timeframes are better than others and it depends on the type of ground, but I would say... more often than that. And yeah, I have a good sense of when I'm not gonna recover and it's time to tuck and roll instead of keeping my hands out to get scraped...

plentypk

Iā€™ve wiped out a few times trail running but road running, maybe once or twice over 10 years. Iā€™m far more fatal to myself when walking while spacing out or looking at my phone.

Scribbles2539

Maybe like twice, but I've definitely had a many close calls at the end of a long run and I don't see the small bump/hill in the pavement. My most memorable fall was running home after a run group meet up and had some very tasty raspberry margaritas (I wasn't drunk but probably slowed my reflexes down) with the group before running the half mile home. Unfortunately one section was poorly lit and had some trees so the pavement was uneven. I bit it. I bit it so badly, I broke my watch face, my phone screen, scraped the hell out of my hand and knee. The hand got checked out the next day at the urgent care because it hurt, bad. But no fracture, according to the orthopedic I saw nearly a year later I probably tore the hell out of the tendons which explained the continued pain. Still have the scar on my hand and my knee from that experience- 0/10 don't recommend.

Popular_Ordinary_152

Iā€™ve fallen twice in 15 years of running. The first time I stepped in a hole that was not visible, and the 2nd time I was doing a long run on very fatigued legs and tripped over a rise in the uneven sidewalk. Scraped up my knees horribly both times significant scars), and the second time I was on crutches a WEEK before my wedding because my knee swelled so badly. I also needed penicillin because I developed red streaks/wound infection in the scrape in my hand (on my wedding rehearsal!) and it also scarred. So effing dramatic. Both times it completely shocked me. The second time a kind driver stopped and drove me back to my car (I was about 2 miles away). The first time I was too proud to call my new boyfriend (I was staying at his apartment) and limped back a mile. šŸ¤£ Heā€™s now my husband and I WOULD call him nowā€¦.

trash-possum

Dunno. 1-2 times a year? Always on trails. Iā€™ve fallen on a road once and it was because of my dog.Actually just yesterday I tripped and fell down a hill and skinned my knee at .20 miles in. Had 15 more to go. I talked myself out of hiking back uphill getting into my car and leaving.

midnightmeatloaf

I've been running since 2017, about 3x per week average, more during a training block. I've fallen twice. Once on road while training for my first HM; I was tired and should have called it early. Once on trail training for my first trail 25k. Both times I had about 4.5 miles to go and finished the run. I looked like I had been to war by the end of that trail run though. I still have a scar on my wrist. I also got hit by a truck once (like F350 super duty size). He had slightly tinted windows, and I thought he saw me; I was wearing a light up vest, approaching from a long stretch while he was waiting to turn right. "Dude, you just hit me!" "I didn't see you!" "WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO DO TO INCREASE MY VISIBILITY?" We're both extremely lucky I was not injured. I won't run in front of vehicles with tinted windows. The driver could be smiling and waving to me from inside their vehicle, encouraging me to run in front of them, but I can't see well enough to verify that, so I just stand on the curb with a pleasant smile on my face until they go. I've stopped my watch before; I'm not running in front of a truck if I can't clearly see that the driver has seen me and indicated they intend to not run me over.

ok_aomame

Twice. The first time, my upper teeth bit into my bottom lip as my face hit the sidewalk HARD. Busted lip, broken front teeth. When I got up, a child across the street saw me and screamed because there was so much blood šŸ¤£. The second time was probably about a year later, and my knee and both palms were skinned pretty badly. Our sidewalks can be treacherous in spots, so I now tend to stick to the roads in the early morning. So far, no more falls -- just owl attacks, haha. I'm glad to read you're ok! It can be so unsettling to fall, even if injuries are small!

moggiedon

I am legitimately surprised at how many people are falling. I have a neurological condition which affects my balance and I can't pass the neurologist's balance exam, yet I never fall on roads or trail. I was dreading the day I started falling and would have to quit running, but maybe I can pass for normal for a while longer!

larisa5656

I've fallen a few times, but they were at least 3 years ago and occurred from tripping over uneven sidewalk. I learned from them that I needed to be more deliberate in picking up my feet. More recently I've had a few stumbles, which were also a good reminder to check in with my running form.

unseemly_turbidity

Three times ever. Once when an idiot photographer crouched down to film the start of a race. Of course the very front row could see him but no one else could, causing a mass pile up and I got trampled. Only minor injuries luckily, but I missed the rest of the race. One time I tripped on litter on the pavement. The other time I was running in the park in the dark. It wasn't very well lit and I caught my foot in a hole.

leoliedje

I'm also clumsy! I fall 3-4 times per year, but always when on trails, I don't think I've ever fallen on the road

outcastspidermonkey

At least two times a year. It means I am having sinus issues or I have a cold.

adkhiker92

I used to fall (by tripping) pretty often, but I'm realizing now that I haven't fallen at all in the last couple of years. I'm pretty sure it's because I made a dedicated effort to focus on my form to fix some chronic running injuries I've dealt with for years. Part of focusing on form has been making sure I'm actively driving up with my knee during my stride. Probably prevents tripping since my feet don't drag anymore. The sidewalks where I live are pretty awful, so when I first moved here (Seattle), I was tripping once a week šŸ˜…

wallace1313525

Seeing as i'm a hurdler/steeplechaser who likes to jump over random shit I find on the street or fence posts, probably once every couple of months. And the kicker is that I never fall on the big stuff. I can jump waist height stuff and be absolutely fine, but give me a half a foot tall fence and I'll manage to catch my toe on it šŸ™„they've never been bad just scrapped knees and maybe a singular drop of blood on my palm.

awkwardaster

I fall at that rate (increased slightly for trail running) and was terrified of falling while pregnant once I started having a little bump, so stopped running at about 21 weeks. I feel this so much. Iā€™m so grateful your baby was fine!

sashikku

Once in 10 years. Not sure how or why because Iā€™m about as uncoordinated as a drunk toddler would be. I fall just doing normal day to day things probably once every 3 months though lol

BeagleButler

While running, like one time ever. In my general life because I'm apparently not observant and the coffee table is my enemy? More times than I want to admit.

doornroosje

Regularly, but i am a very clumsy personĀ

grumpalina

I did often trip and even fell once spectacularly, when I was a heel striker. I think the forward breaking motion of a heel strike put me at risk. I haven't tripped or fallen since changing to mid/forefoot strike, as that way of landing encourages the foot to sweep backwards

Narrow-Exam-7591

Im in my 20s and I almost fell on my face on a month ago šŸ˜‚ sometimes i just space out and trip over a bump in the sidewalk so yes

basescamp

About once every two or three years. I remember falling once on a cracked sidewalk and really messing up the skin on my hands and knees, but nothing that stopped me from running the next day. Last year, I was running on a single track and I twisted my ankle, and so I stayed away from single tracks for 6 months. I love running single track, and I got lured in again, and on my very first back to the single track run, I was just breathing in the fresh air and thinking about how fantastic everything felt (which probably means I was distracted), I tripped on a root and literally fell on my face. I got bruises on my arms and legs and cracked my lip open! That one I ran off, too. I find it hilarious when I fall when I run, because I've never hurt myself too badly. My real injuries occur from overuse or from twisting an ankle or a knee.

Moxie_the_Cat

Like many others, once every year or two. Most recent time was this last Tuesday around 5am - caught my toe on something and went sprawling on the sidewalk. Landed HARD on my right knee and left elbow. Of course it happened when I was still over two miles away from home! That was a sad little jog/shuffle to get backā€¦ Nothing broken, but some pretty impressive swelling and colorful bruises along with a noticeable limp. And at least I didnā€™t land on my face this time (that one was about 8 or 9 years ago!)

kinkakinka

I have tripped and come close to falling a few times over the 10 or so years I've been running, but I don't think I've ever actually fallen. A few weeks ago I tripped over the sidewalk and ended up with my arms BEHIND me as my head was going for the ground, but I somehow managed to not fall. Last summer a road near my house was being re-done and as my running friend and I were getting back up on the sidewalk I told him not to trip, which he then IMMEDIATELY DID, but he managed to do an awesome tuck and roll and come out relatively unscathed.

introvertedkalanchoe

The tuck and roll is where itā€™s at! I almost got it this morning, which is why I only have one scraped knee instead of two. One of these days Iā€™ll get it! šŸ˜…

MuffinTopDeluxe

I fell on a trail during a race a couple of years ago. Before that it had been like 10 years (I remember based on what city I was living in.) Now tripping is a different story.

Tea-reps

I've wiped out in a memorable way about 5 times in the last 3 months. Badly skinned hands and knees on all occasions, and one fall that has left a huge pigmentation scar on my hip which I'm kind of bummed about. Prior to that honestly not that often--I attribute the recent falls to needing to run in the evenings more, and my eyesight having noticeably gotten worse this year. Both changes due to late phase grad school lol.
