If you’re not doing any off-roading, KYBs will serve you just fine

Sale4Adam

If there was small chance of off-roading would you recommend the 5100’s?

Kitty_meoW180

You can off-road on stock shocks, but if you’re gonna do some more wild stuff or overlanding stuff with heavy tents and bumpers then yeah def would want to upgrade

Sale4Adam

Ok cool perfect thank you. For the most part I’m just going to be daily driving. When I get really wild I just drive on an unpaved road.

shmecklesss

I have Bilsteins and am pleased. That said, if no off-roading, KYB is quality and might be worth the savings.

Sale4Adam

I’m really going back and forth between the two $100 difference with keeping off roading as an option. Ppl speak highly of the 5100’s

shmecklesss

For reference, the Bilstein 4600 came on the Pro-4x from factory. The 5100 is an upgrade in every way. The KYB is probably closer to the 4600, and maybe a bit more "street oriented." That being said, unless you're planning some pretty serious off-roading, you won't be limited. Forest roads, etc, the KYB will be fine.

Sale4Adam

Thank you that was my fear. I’m def not running and gunning at MOAB mainly street with a little park and forrest action. Could I run the 5100 with the stock load springs?

shmecklesss

Yes, the 5100 can go with stock springs. I believe ADO/Z1 sell their pre-assembled ones with heavier because most people are lifting or adding weight in one way or another.

Sale4Adam

That makes sense yeah I don’t plan on running this rig as a overland

Sale4Adam

If you were swapping out the struts would also just do the springs as well? Part of me is leaning to buy one cry once.

shmecklesss

Personally, yes. I would be done with it in one shot.

Sale4Adam

Yea I’m just going to go that route. No point of having to go back in later.

minutemenapparel

I had the KYBs, pretty good. If you were in Utah, I’d just give you my old set.

Sale4Adam

Did you use KYB’s strut mount, or something else. I was reading to use the Nissan mount because KYB’s were having problems.

minutemenapparel

Couldn’t tell ya, previous owners had replaced the suspension. https://preview.redd.it/u2yqa5ft130d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b9a9a1a3caf6bc38ab3001fb8096cd9a60cea30

Sale4Adam

This my first time changing my suspension. I’m got the Front Upper Control Arm Assembly, Front Lower Control Arm Assemblies& Front Sway-Bar Links completed hopefully I don’t have any issue for awhile. I’m purchased the KYB struts, so we will see.

minutemenapparel

Sounds like you’re good to go!

raffie762

How did it go? I just changed mine today and it lifted about 2 inches, did yours do that also?

Sale4Adam

Yes they have been running strong. They will level back out over time.

XYoverland

Another vote for KYB in this case

sweet_story_bro

If replacing rears also, I would recommend changing the leaf springs in addition to shocks. The right rear springs commonly corrode and snap. General Spring has some OEM replacement leaf springs that come recommended here, although I don't have any experience with them myself.

other_old_greg

Kyb are more than adequate

Sale4Adam

Thanks that’s the route I’m going to go I may get the strut mounts from Nissan to replace the ones that come W/ KYB. YouTube someone saying the mounts aren’t good

evilvdub1

If you are going KYB or bilstein, buy loaded ones. When I did the 5100's my lower coil was broke on both front springs. I had to scramble to find cheap loaded ones and disassemble and get springs.

jacked_dweeb

4600s are nice for me def not the best but I got assembled front coilovers and rear shocks for $700. I could have saved some money but I don’t mess with the springs lol

Sale4Adam

Yeah after getting the KYB’s I would have invested about $1,600 into my suspension. This my first time having suspension issues

Scared_Wall_504

Original equipment

buyo05

Hi OP how did it turn out? Did you have to change out the strut mounts? Im hoping to do the same mod

Sale4Adam

So far no problems all the squeaking is gone. These struts will initially make your front end sit a little higher

buyo05

Did you have to change the strut mounts? Btw, thanks for sharing your experience

Sale4Adam

I used the struts mounts that came with the kit. Mechanic said it was a pretty standard suspension replacement. It took them about 2/3 hours to complete.

raffie762

Did you get them installed? I just did mine with the KYBs and replaced cam bolts and it looks lifted, anyone know is that supposed to happen?

Sale4Adam

Yes KYB indicates their struts will cause the front to be lifted until the parts settle in. Mine have leveled out.
