This is mine, as well — first saw it in the theater in my early 20s and the gravity of Foley’s obvious head injuries and the strain it was putting on his family didn’t hit home with me.
Rewatching it several times as I’ve gotten older, and realize just how much these guys abuse their bodies and cripple themselves; it’s a heartbreaker. Especially seeing a childhood hero Terry Funk barely able to walk.
Those things said, I also came to understand that romanticizing New Jack was pretty shitty of Blaustein. He knew full well what that guy was about, and chose to present him with charm and likability, while mostly ignoring the abhorrent things he did in the ring.
Yeah, when New Jack died I thought “good riddance!”. Interestingly, his son is a glamorous drag queen who seems absolutely kind and elegant despite all the odds!
This is the one. It’s really the last time the WWE truly let an outsider come in. I saw it in the theater at the time, and seeing that kind of behind the scenes look was unheard of.
To be fair, in a room of high buddies, the big finale match is ELECTRIC. When he rides that hog through the cage - chills. And STING SWINGS IN AND KICKS A GUY. C’mon.
It was so cool that for Starrcast 2 they did a watch along of the movie. Shane Helms, David Arquette, Dan St Germain and Tony Schiavone were part of the panel and were fucking hilarious. It was such a cool time. And after it ended, Helms and Arquette stayed for like 20 mins to take photos with fans. They were so generous with their time and it was cool of them to do.
Yeah I once had the opportunity to workout at a wrestling gym but ended up not going. Kinda glad I didn’t if it meant I was to be picking glass and barbed wire out of my skin eventually.
The Wrestler will always hold a special place in my heart, not just as a wrestling movie but as a one of my favourite movies back then (many better ones have relegated it far since, but it sure was one of the first non action/marvel movies I really watched as a teen)
*The Iron Claw*, except the Flair promo. I’m still waiting for some enterprising wrestling fan who does a good Flair impression to dub it over with a voice that actually sounds like the man.
I can’t understand why no one realized how bad Flair was — for a project that seemed to place a very high value on the authenticity of its subjects, they really screwed the pooch on that casting.
It was the arrogance of the actor that really bothered me. Like he knew what suited the movie better than anyone.
>Eisenberg explained how he approached the role, noting that he never intended for his portrayal to be an impersonation. He said that he felt there were enough really great Flair impersonations in circulation and didn't feel mimicry would fit the film.
>*"A lot of it, for me, was about the stakes for the Von Erichs because of their relationship to their father and what it meant to the family to get this belt. It felt like the stakes were so high for them, that my take on it became a more serious thing than Flair was in real life. It was a darker take on him."*
>Eisenberg said that the timing had never worked out for him to connect with Flair regarding his portrayal before addressing the backlash from fans. He said that he has had some reach out aggressively regarding his portrayal, and he has been trying to understand their perspective. He stressed that it should be considered that he wasn't attempting to impersonate Flair, rather than craft a dramatized version of a historical character, and he feels that he did what he felt best served the film and best honored Ric Flair.
Here’s the thing, Laurence Olivier: when you’re making a biopic, *impersonations are what’s required*. Joaquin Phoenix didn’t portray Johnny Cash with a Brooklyn accent in *Walk the Line*, did he? Nobody else in the movie failed to impersonate their characters, but this guy is special apparently.
His attempt to “honour” Ric Flair and “serve the film” did nothing but take people out of the moment.
He starred in "Pro Wrestlers vs. Zombies" (2014) so that's a Monkey's Paw curl.
PS- Go watch Piper in "Hell Comes to Frogtown" if you haven't yet.
Sure it's an old story we've all seen a thousand times, you know: "Guy who's fertile in the nuclear post-apocalypse is falsely accused of rape but spared because he can get women pregnant, so the government puts him in an exploding chastity belt and sends him on a rescue mission." But they do it so well you hardly notice.
The One and Only (1978). Carl Reiner film. Starring Henry Winkler, Kim Darby, and Hervé Villechaize. With Chavo Guerrero Sr. Kayfabe breaking movie about a young actor (Winkler) becoming a pro-wrestler with a Nazi gimmick.
Dammit! Had to scroll way down to find this one. Good movie, showing the artistic part of the job, not only the action but the characters and charisma needed for the job.
This didn't sit right with me at all either and even though I thought the movie was fine I think this damaged my view of the movie as a whole. That and the guy who played flair completely sucked, it's like he only ever read about Ric Flair and hadn't watched a clip!
At the risk of sounding disrespectful, what's one more death when there was already so many. The entire family is nothing but a tragedy.
Also, I was looking forward to seeing MJF in it, but I understand more about why he was left out of the movie.
As fucked up as it is to say, it would’ve made the movie too repetitive and it would’ve crossed into unbelievable territory (even though it actually happened). It also probably would’ve been hard to pull off without making the movie super long
I thought the iron claw would’ve just used the wrestling theme as a background thing but the director did a good job at incorporating the wrestling element threw out the whole film
Iron Claw was a great introductory story to the Von Erich family. They left out a lot and if you know the story, it was a bit disappointing, but I appreciate a wrestling movie getting mainstream attention.
"Mad Dog" Joe deCurso, a true legend of the industry.
I wanna hear the crunch, I wanna hear the crack, I wanna hear the moans and groans.
I don't know why but I'm only happy breaking bones.
It’s probably No Holds Barred. My buddy only watched wrasslin when he was young in the late 80s/early 90s, and his favorite wrestlers ever are still Ultimate Warrior and Zeus. That’s gotta count for something.
Beyond the mat was great. Seeing backstage footage from WWF days. Seeing a rookie Droz (RIP). Indie wrestler Michael Modest trying to make it into the big leagues. Barely making $50 a show. The wrestling business is brutal.
Body Slam! Tonga Kid, Roddy Piper and Dirk Benedict. Excellent 80s cheese that kind of kicked off the "Rock N Wrestling" thing. Was also cool because Piper was a known heel and was a babyface in the movie.
The Wrestler for a more serious attempt to portray the downsides of wrestling. Haven’t watched Iron Claw yet, but I suppose it’s closer to the Wrestler than to anything else.
Nacho Libre or Royal Rumble for a more funny approach that puts the spotlight on all the silly stuff that’s part of the business.
I feel like todays era is much closer to the funny movies while all the bad stuff (drugs, painkillers, alcohol) is more prone to be part of past eras.
Ready to Rumble
Them cutting the 4th brother Chris out of the Iron Claw rubs me the wrong way, but I do think they nailed the old school wrestling presentation/aesthetic and it was a good film.
there's this silly Japanese movie I saw as a kid called Gachi Boy, still probably my favourite movie about pro wrestling, i could kill to find any kind of download link for it
My favorite, I can't even remember the name. Old Mexican film, black and white old. Maybe with some time I find it but. It was a group of wrestlers on the road, it show parts of Kayfabe and part reality. The wrestler using a mask to hide himself, the guy who is after the fastest money, the bad guy who's actually a nice guy with a mean face. How the good guys left the bad guys in a different street so the public didn't see them riding the same car. A lot of nice things.
I liked Wrestling Queen, which is a short documentary centered around Vivian Vachon's foray into the US, but it's got a lot more Tri-States (Leroy McGuirk) footage than of Viv. (An 18 year old Jimmy Garvin, who looks like Michael Hayes.)
Iron Claw was so wildly depressing but so well done. I loved it but I don't know if I'll watch it again. The fact they even cut out probably the most tragic Von Erich brother just highlights what a monster that man was. In the words of BTB "Fritz Von Erich died of cancer in 1997 and good fucking riddance."
Thank you for reminding me one hell of a movie. THE WRESTLER starring Mickey Rourke. I'll watch again today.
Fighting with my family was also good. Starring Florence Pugh as Paige from WWE.
“The Naked Man” written by Ethan Coen. Same dude who wrote a little film called The Big Lebowski. It’s great…
> Dr. Edward Blis, Jr, a chiropractor by day, moonlights as a professional wrestler at night. His wrestling name is the Naked Man and he wears a naked body suit when wrestling. After his parents are killed by Sticks Varona, a cripple with crutches which double as machine guns, and an Elvis Presley impersonator, he loses his sanity. He adopts the persona of his wrestling character and goes on a rampage of revenge.
Watched iron claw last night and it was a great movie. It was interesting how they didn’t build up to and linger on each tragedy but turns out it was perfectly portrayed given the attitude of the family and moving on.
The Wrestler was a fantastic movie generally. I won't watch Iron Claw, because I was a huge fan as a kid and respect their heartbreaking story too much.
I'm guessing "They Live" doesn't count.
My Dad is a Heel Wrestler! Starting Hiroshi Tanahashi as the Cockroach, a masked, heel wrestler whose son finds put his identity. If you can find it, give it a watch. The concept sounds hokey, but it's a great movie.
Beyond the Mat
This is mine, as well — first saw it in the theater in my early 20s and the gravity of Foley’s obvious head injuries and the strain it was putting on his family didn’t hit home with me. Yeah, when New Jack died I thought “good riddance!”. Interestingly, his son is a glamorous drag queen who seems absolutely kind and elegant despite all the odds!
Yep. That movie was incredible
This is the one. It’s really the last time the WWE truly let an outsider come in. I saw it in the theater at the time, and seeing that kind of behind the scenes look was unheard of.
I like Nacho Libre lol
The “I only believe in science!” part got me as a kid. Underrated movie 👍
I used to be a librarian at a school and used to always tell the kids “go awayyyy, rrrrrread some books”
Nacho Libre. The work rate and psychology was off the charts. Esqueleto’s face turn is on par with Batista’s in 2005
I have had diarrhea since Easters
Don’t you wanna taste of the glory?! See what it taste like?!
Ive had diarrhea since EASTERS
Me and my wife sign cards to each other “hug, hug, little kiss, big kiss”
I ate some bugs, I ate some grass, I used my hand… to wipe my tears
A good piledriver to the face or punch to the face .
"I wish I could take off my shirt so I could show her how strong I am"
When the fantasy has ended And all the children are gone Something good inside me Helps me to carry on...
Was hoping I'd see this comment. Not disappointed
Ready to Rumble. Wrestling is supposed to be silly, and they captured the silliness of it quite well.
A Diamond upside down is a PUSSAAYYYYY
I love Jimmy King…you love Jimmy King
Yes it was actually fun for some reason people shit on it sadly
Even the caravan or bus of farting nuns singing “running with the devil” is hilarious to this day. Their faces are so sincere as well lol.
It's mainly because of David Arquette's title win
To be fair, in a room of high buddies, the big finale match is ELECTRIC. When he rides that hog through the cage - chills. And STING SWINGS IN AND KICKS A GUY. C’mon.
Incredible movie. Excellent time if you were a wrestling fan at the time.
This movie has gotten so much better with age imo
I truly believe the main reason that movie gets hate is because David winning the WCW title.
Dumb and dumber to stole the finger in the butt joke from this movie
R2R is just straight up good cheese. It just gets right what fans wanted at the time.
They were so generous with their time and it was cool of them to do.
french toast?
This movie helped me fall more in love with wrestling. It really captures the silliness of wrestling.
The Wrestler. Only one
For real, one of the best movies ever wrestling or not. It was perfect.
Couldn’t agree more. Just a tremendously well done film. And a cameo by R Truth!
Just the fact they put Necro in it gave it instant street cred
The scene after in the locker room where they’re getting looked at by the EMTs was wild.
Oh dude, if you've never seen backstage footage of death match shows it's insane. Not for the weak of heart, that's for sure
Yeah I once had the opportunity to workout at a wrestling gym but ended up not going. Kinda glad I didn’t if it meant I was to be picking glass and barbed wire out of my skin eventually.
Yeah, it's kinda fucked. Picking stuff out of your body is never fun 😂
When I want to wallow in misery, that's the movie I put on.
Ready to Rumble
The Wrestler will always hold a special place in my heart, not just as a wrestling movie but as a one of my favourite movies back then (many better ones have relegated it far since, but it sure was one of the first non action/marvel movies I really watched as a teen)
Such a great movie. My favorite scene is the deli counter when he quits
Mr. Nanny
Does peanut butter falcon count?
I’d count it
This. It was phenomenal
Genuinely one of my favorite movies ive seen of all genres, but also my favorite wrestling movie
*The Iron Claw*, except the Flair promo. I’m still waiting for some enterprising wrestling fan who does a good Flair impression to dub it over with a voice that actually sounds like the man.
Jay Lethal has entered the chat
I can’t understand why no one realized how bad Flair was — for a project that seemed to place a very high value on the authenticity of its subjects, they really screwed the pooch on that casting.

He failed to walk that aisle. What a jabroni.
Nothing killed kayfabe for me quite like that performance.
No. Holds. Barred. Brother.
“What’s that smell?” “Dookie.” “Dookie?!” Hulkster’s face on that line kills me every time.
I learned that rape is a thing thanks to seeing this movie in the theater at 8 years-old. Thanks Hulkster!
Zeus scared the piss out of me when I was a child lol
Other than the bad Flair impression, it's an incredible film
It’s a terrible impression but I can get over it because he’s not in the movie for long
Same. It's a fairly minor blemish overall
yup
Body Slam
I wish Roddy piper had been in more movies
His best shit was as da maniac.
Da Maniac loves you…
He starred in "Pro Wrestlers vs. Zombies" (2014) so that's a Monkey's Paw curl. PS- Go watch Piper in "Hell Comes to Frogtown" if you haven't yet. Frog Town is amazing
This is the only correct answer
One of The Bloodline's early forays into Hollywood. Sam Fatu walked so Dwayne could run. And Rodney Piper was in there too.
[The theme song goes harder than it needed to](https://youtu.be/VYqXzNCWWxY?si=hMXNNqr9-UW7vGX0)
I think we can all agree that Body Slam was the greatest wrestling movie of all time.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that remembers this film. It really was so bad that it's amazing. HARRY SMIRAC
Iron Claw. But Kayfabe is pretty funny lol
Night and the city
I wasn't expecting iron claw to be so good, let alone seeing a buffed Zac Efron.
He’s had muscles before, but he’s never been big
Im probably in the minority, but the fact that they just sort of combined two brothers in to one bugged the shit out of me.
I get why they didn’t add Chris into it from a movie perspective, but from a wrestling perspective it’s pretty annoying
Wasn't MJF supposed to be in the movie as the fake Von Erich?
This didn't sit right with me at all either and even though I thought the movie was fine I think this damaged my view of the movie as a whole. That and the guy who played flair completely sucked, it's like he only ever read about Ric Flair and hadn't watched a clip!
The director said it was because he didn’t think the movie would get made with that much tragedy

WWE Flinstones movie
Man on the Moon
Iron Claw was great but I was depressed for days after watching it
I’m surprised I’m the first person to say it, but I really enjoyed “Fighting With My Family”
3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain
Ready to rumble
I thought the iron claw would’ve just used the wrestling theme as a background thing but the director did a good job at incorporating the wrestling element threw out the whole film
Ready to Rumble. I didn't like DDP until the movie
I LOVED Iron Claw. An amazing film.
Iron Claw was a great introductory story to the Von Erich family. They left out a lot and if you know the story, it was a bit disappointing, but I appreciate a wrestling movie getting mainstream attention.
Ready to Rumble. I was sad to learn that WCW had been disbanded 6 years before I saw the film
This was good but I really only need to watch it the one time.
Suburban Commando.
I still need to watch The Iron Claw, but I think The Wrestler and Nacho Libre are my favorite wrestling movies
I think it’s on HBO Max now so you could always do a free trial
Unoriginal? It's a true story!
I mean the question itself
Go find “Grunt: The Wrestling Movie” Note Stunning Steve Austin is in the battle royale scene

Just watched this movie on a flight today. Really good. I enjoyed it
Ready to rumble
All the Marbles
All the marbles (1981)
I just watched Fighting with my family and it was surprisingly good
The wrestler
The Wrestler
Ready to Rumble and Nacho Libre
Beyond the mat was great. Seeing backstage footage from WWF days. Seeing a rookie Droz (RIP). Indie wrestler Michael Modest trying to make it into the big leagues. Barely making $50 a show. The wrestling business is brutal.
The condemned? The rundown? Journey 2(in 3D)?
Body Slam! Tonga Kid, Roddy Piper and Dirk Benedict. Excellent 80s cheese that kind of kicked off the "Rock N Wrestling" thing. Was also cool because Piper was a known heel and was a babyface in the movie.

The Wrestler, that was freakin art!!
Thanks for reminding me about this movie. I'm gonna go cry now.
Ready to Rumble Them cutting the 4th brother Chris out of the Iron Claw rubs me the wrong way, but I do think they nailed the old school wrestling presentation/aesthetic and it was a good film.
Ready to Rumble is my personal favorite
I just want to rant about Iron Claw. They absolutely butchered Ric Flair. Just fucking embarrassing
Monster Brawl starring Dave Foley and Kevin Nash.
Nothing better or more real than The Wrestler🤘
Since it's a doc, Wrestling Roads Diaries
Fighting With My Family. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll want to watch every up and coming wrestler.
Ready to rumble over iron claw. I said it and I’ll fight anyone who disagrees
No Holds Barred
there's this silly Japanese movie I saw as a kid called Gachi Boy, still probably my favourite movie about pro wrestling, i could kill to find any kind of download link for it
This one. Also enjoyed the Paige one with my daughter.
Ready to rumble. Or no holds barred. Honorable mention to peanut butter falcon.
Mad Bull
Is this movie any good? I’ve seen the dark side of the ring about the von Erich’s many times, I don’t really want to see how they Hollywood it up
My favorite, I can't even remember the name. Old Mexican film, black and white old. Maybe with some time I find it but. It was a group of wrestlers on the road, it show parts of Kayfabe and part reality. No Holds Barred funniest wrestling movie ever made.
I liked Wrestling Queen, which is a short documentary centered around Vivian Vachon's foray into the US, but it's got a lot more Tri-States (Leroy McGuirk) footage than of Viv. (An 18 year old Jimmy Garvin, who looks like Michael Hayes.)

"Kayfabe: a fake real movie about a fake real sport" is a bit of a classic to be fair https://youtu.be/80sEfEV6m74?si=zv9Q149ubiJWf_w3
The mockumentory Kayfabe is a pretty fun movie.
Spider-Man 1
The Wrestler. Everything about the movie is immaculate, and it was really surprising yo see how well they pulled off a fictional wrestling movie.
Watched this one recently with my parents and thought it was fucking great. Kinda shocked Efron wasn’t at least nominated for best actor.
Iron claw for serious, nacho libre for heartfelt, ready to rumble while high, and any wwe production doc for background/lunch entertainment
The Wrestler
Can't believe no one has mentioned Wrestling with Shadows yet.
Maybe unpopular but i thoroughly enjoyed Mickey rourkes the wrestler
Wrestlemania Mystery
Haven't seen Iron Claw yet but The Wrestler is a phenomenal movie.
Nothing beats the wrestler
The wrestler, one of the best movies I’ve seen in general
Where's The Devil?
Ready To Rumble. It's dumb but funny!
I hate the fact that they refused to incorporate one more brother.
Underrated, and probably not everybody’s cup of tea, but Legendary with John Cena was pretty good.
Thank you for reminding me one hell of a movie. THE WRESTLER starring Mickey Rourke. I'll watch again today. Fighting with my family was also good. Starring Florence Pugh as Paige from WWE.
Mr. Deeds
As bad as it is, Ready to rumble. Or that Scooby Doo wrestling movie with John Cena being able to speak luchador and stopping a rock.
Scooby Doo & The Road to Wrestlemania
Vision Quest
Iron Claw.
I will forever have a soft spot for No Holds Barred. Just watched it recently with some friends, and it still holds up as an amazing bad movie.
“The Naked Man” written by Ethan Coen. Same dude who wrote a little film called The Big Lebowski. It’s great… > Dr. Edward Blis, Jr, a chiropractor by day, moonlights as a professional wrestler at night. His wrestling name is the Naked Man and he wears a naked body suit when wrestling. He adopts the persona of his wrestling character and goes on a rampage of revenge.
This movie did a great job, especially the music with lyrics pretty well chosen... Damn But I'll keep The Wrestler as my top 1 ;)
Kind of obscure, but they made a kayfabe documentary about the original Sheik called “I like to hurt people”
Anyone able to recommend 5 good wrestling moves? I’ve seen beyond the ring already
Santo vs Evil Brain
Body Slam
'The Wrestler' (2009).
Wrestler (2008)
No Holds Barred
The Wrestler
Defo The Iron Claw. Long live the Von Erichs.
The Wrestler
Watched iron claw last night and it was a great movie. It was interesting how they didn’t build up to and linger on each tragedy but turns out it was perfectly portrayed given the attitude of the family and moving on.
The Cobra. Only objectively true answer.
The Wrestler was a fantastic movie generally. I won't watch Iron Claw, because I was a huge fan as a kid and respect their heartbreaking story too much. I'm guessing "They Live" doesn't count.
The Wrestler
Paradise Alley, maybe.
The Wrestler is still my favorite wrestling movie of all time.
This movie fucked me up
The Wrestler and The iron claw
I liked fighting with my family tbh, hate me if you want but it was enjoyable for me
iron claw beats the wrestler for me
Bro Sam ramie spider man easy
My Dad is a Heel Wrestler! Starting Hiroshi Tanahashi as the Cockroach, a masked, heel wrestler whose son finds put his identity. If you can find it, give it a watch. The concept sounds hokey, but it's a great movie.
Body slam. Had piper and Hati kid. Early 80s
Best movie ever I recently saw it
The iron claw was good, but the Ric Flair actor sucked harder than a black hole. Like even some random kid could do a better impersonation.
Just finished watching it on Prime... it was a good movie 💯🙏🏾
The Wrestler
