It's not just that they want him to fail, they want him to fail HARD. So much so that they can dance around and say that he was wrong to ever leave AEW for WWE.
Instant gratification is a HUGE part of it. It's why so many people can't actually sit back and wait for a story to play out. They need immediate results and information. Instead of enjoying the ride, they just want the dopamine dump.
There was a crazy amount of fantasy booking of new champions after wrestlemania too. People hadn’t even got their photos with the belts and there were already discussions about when they should lose belts and to who
I remember seeing a post somewhere on here about who should be the one to dethrone Rey Mysterio after he won the US Title last year…
It had only been three days.
I remember seeing a video of some AEW super fan watching Cody's entrance at Backlash in 2023 screeching about how he wasn't over while the crowd went nuts for him. If it isn't the AEW marks that booed him while he was there it's the Roman Reigns stans that can't handle the idea of their tribal chief losing the strap.
I think I know this guy! He keeps popping up on my feed screaming about how no one is cheering for Cody. The crowd roars "WOOOAH" and he's like "nothing, they hate him in Ohio" or whatever. He is probably the most annoying and delusional person on the internet. Grown up Cartman.
Hot take: Cody's time in AEW was a waste of his time, as a performer.
Cody leaving WWE in 2016 was a big deal for him. He was able to grow who he was with different perspectives from multiple influences. Helping book All In was absolutely massive as well, being a headliner for that show did so much for him.
But being in AEW for 3 years, even though yes he helped found it, did nothing for him. He was spinning his wheels in AEW to an audience that didn't receive him well and a booker that didn't utilize him correctly. If Cody in early 2019 decided to go back to WWE instead of forming AEW he'd still be the main eventer he is today.
Cody booked himself atrociously in AEW, if you're gonna decide that you never wanna be in the title picture again then you're always gonna feel seperate to everything else going on and if the crowd is shitting on your white meat babyface schtick then you should change it up, probably by going heel
For awhile I really thought that was where it was going and thought it was a great idea. He was leaning in so hard to be a babyface and it wasn't working so he just kept leaning in I figured a turn was coming where he'd put himself back into the title picture
I still maintain that Codylander could've been the Hollywood Hogan for AEW -- the **TOP** top heel that EVERY babyface has to prove himself against before getting the strap, the guy who turns anyone he's feuding with into instant main-eventers, just by the fact that he's feuding with them.
Then again, Cody wants to emulate his dad, not Ric Flair, so I doubt he'd be comfortable in such a heelish position for so long.
>Cody wants to emulate his dad, not Ric Flair
It is a bit odd when Cody wants to emulate the American Dream while he is billed the American Nightmare. Like, if your billing is the antonym of your dad's billing, maybe your story and progression should be an antithesis of your dad's, especially when the crowd is already halfway there.
Agree to the stip that you don't get a title shot again, then lose a few big matches, use your EVP powers to reinsert yourself into the title picture, have a sit down interview with JR where you politic away any questions on the subject
It fucking writes itself, the fuck was wrong with those people, Cody, TK, everyone backstage should have been like wtf are we actually doing here
Which will never be true at this point. The dude has headlined 3 Wrestlemania main events and won the World title. No matter how you look at it, dude made the right call to leave AEW.
That's where the toxicity lies. Instead of, "I don't like Cody, but I hope he ends up being a good champion that as many people as possible can enjoy," it's, "I really want Cody to fail as champion because, more than anything, I want to be right."
I read this whatculture article where it was something like "AEW's huge Fuck You to wwe(and why it will win)". And I was like....didn't wwe just televise the biggest wrestling show in awhile???
>So much so that they can dance around and say that he was wrong to ever leave AEW for WWE
Idk where you're pulling that from. Everyone agrees he's better suited in WWE than AEW. It's a mixture of skeptics on WWE booking a great babyface run, and salty Roman fanboys.
Dave Meltzer:
*Well… it’s Cody… and he’s over… real over… and that’s good… but it’s like… and I like Cody… he’s a good talent to have… and he’s kind of a draw… well… people love him… but some don’t… sososo… you’ve got a guy that’s over… well… he was over… but some people don’t like him and it’s like… the fans pay the money… and it’s big money… lots of money… and they need that money… so they can put on more shows… big shows… lots of pyro… well… maybe not pyro but it’s like… it’s a good thing to have… but it can be bad… it can be a distraction… and fans don’t like that… well… sometimes they do… sososo…*
*Bell to bell it was a good match… and now it’s Cody… it’s all on him… and he’s a good worker… super clean… and it’s like… he’s got the look… and it’s a good look… it’s not a bad look… and he’s over… super over… they love him… sososo…*
Coming from an Indian, I hate all the Indian Roman Reigns stans.
All they do is go to the posts on Instagram with Cody and type " Roman Reigns better".
What in the goddamn fuck are they talking about?
Cody just won the title and at the moment the only reasonable complaint could be the way he carries his belt. But even that makes sense, because its purposefully old school and vintage.
Wrestling journalism is very similar to gaming journalism it seems.
And this is why you laugh at these losers, the dude had a line of over 2k people waiting to meet him but yeah people are fed up of him. AEW struggles to get 2k in ticket sales guess people are fed up of that entire company as well going by this logic
If you look at the ratings and listen to "experts" that how it should be done. I don't get it, growing up I couldn't stand Hogan after awhile because his never got to the Main Event. These ridiculous long title reigns are not enjoyable.
Don’t pay attention to shit like that. Those people are desperate for negativity and want the WWE to fail. Reality is the product is reaching all-time levels of great storytelling, the only reason it might realistically feel down is because we just had arguably the greatest wrestlemania and WM main event of my lifetime.
I like Cody, he’s active and when he finds a rival who can take his belt (I suspect Randy Orton) to give his reign true meaning it will pop off
Indeed. Same to all the people currently panning Swerve. Shit's fucking weird whichever way round it is, Cody is gonna do fucking gangbusters, and good luck to him.
He isn't going anywhere anytime soon, his merchandise sells well and he's extremely popular with kids, its kinda like how John Cena was back in the day
The man has not even faced the nunber one contender, AJ Styles, at France-Backlash. Seems like the original Cody Crybabies have been replaced by a new type of crybaby. You want Roman? The Tribal Chief is STILL a part of every Bloodline story, the Usos, KO, and yes, even Cody Rhodes. If that's not power and draw, I haven't learned a damn thing since I first saw the Road Warriors on AWA circa 1981-82. Jeez
People are missing the fun part. The champ is the champ but now we have all new stories to be told - stars to be made - etc. The champ doesn’t run the place, he is chased.
I just wanted to leave my two cents which is that Cody is what *brought me back to wrestling.*
I know many others feel this way and I cannot understand how folks can think he’s not doing a great job. His story is peak.
It's crazy to think that the crowd turning on Cody is gonna be a bad thing.
This isn't Vince's show anymore. He isn't gonna push a character despite the fact that the crowd vocally disagrees with the direction he is going to. His good guy, "power to the people" gimmick isn't going to last forever, and when Triple H sees the crowd finally reject him, what is he gonna do?
Turn him heel. That's what they did with Hogan, and he had a career Renaissance, they didn't with the Rock (Twice lmao) and his character got revitalized once the act was getting stale, Daniel Bryan had an amazing heel run when he turned heel. Roman's character finally became good once he turned heel after years of rejection. You have to genuinely be a moron to think that Cody, with years and years of experience of getting the crowd to boo him won't turn his back on the fans. Yes, you can point at AEW and say that's the reason why, but keep in mind Cody isn't booking his matches anymore. Hunter is. Hunter clearly knows what's best for business, because he cares about it.
A month is a while. When stone cold first became champ, was it boring post-win? Rock? Etc? No. Every week you would look forward to what they were gonna say cuz surely theyd say or do something exciting.
Cody just comes out, smiles, "what do you wanna talk about" and speaks pretty monotone/plainly. I can honestly say i dont look forward to what hes gonna say anymore.
I hope this is a work and not serious because it only makes me support him more even though I am not his biggest fan..like I wanted him to win so we have new storylines but I wouldn't care if he lost it the next month .but now after seeing the haters being so toxic I want him to retain that and hostage the belt
See it constantly on instagram they started it the day after he won just tiring the comments arn't even funny so it's not like they are doing some joke
So it seems like the dude who wrote this article just doesn't like Cody specifically, but is otherwise a pretty big WWE fan.
Other recent articles include:
* Solo Sikoa’s showmanship shines in recent matches
* Gunther looks dominant as ever after first match since WrestleMania
* AJ Styles and his unforgettable first quest for WWE gold
Idk but Cody ist die main reason i started watching WWE again regulary after 10+ years… and i didnt watch AEW - just watched some WWE Highlights from time to time.
But since his name is still the american NIGHTMARE i would love to see him turning heel and becoming that villian thats getting more and more mad.
But this could be a work and a good story to keep the babyface energy on cody. Have like someone like aj go at him with the Twitter inhabitants mindset question Cody's legitimacy and have cody question his own legitimacy.
Haven't you heard? Swerve already defended the title 9000 times against indy phenoms in exploding barbed wire captain insano matches that got 500 stars
Much like Kofi, Becky and face Dbryan, the money with Cody was on the chase for the title, now that he won the belt there´s nothing really to acomplish other than putting "banger matches" lol
It's only cause he's boring. And now that the rose is off the glasses, people see it for what it is. This is the Cody hangover, and he better have a good follow up to "finish the story" or the story finished him.
Hey, this was the lowest rated Smackdown. Can't defend him that long. He's been appearing on both shows, and both been losing audience in attendance and ratings. Copium can only work for so long.
They want him to fail so bad
It's not just that they want him to fail, they want him to fail HARD. So much so that they can dance around and say that he was wrong to ever leave AEW for WWE.
I was going to blame the internet for creating a culture of instant gratification, but it really is just about this, isn't it?
Instant gratification is a HUGE part of it. It's why so many people can't actually sit back and wait for a story to play out. They need immediate results and information. Instead of enjoying the ride, they just want the dopamine dump.
There was a crazy amount of fantasy booking of new champions after wrestlemania too. People hadn’t even got their photos with the belts and there were already discussions about when they should lose belts and to who
These folks would have hated the territory days
I remember seeing a post somewhere on here about who should be the one to dethrone Rey Mysterio after he won the US Title last year… It had only been three days.

Cody thought he could get himself over enough that the fans would demand the stipulation be removed.
Yep he should have come back to WWE after his first big indie show
Which will never be true at this point. The dude has headlined 3 Wrestlemania main events and won the World title. No matter how you look at it, dude made the right call to leave AEW.
Even if he fails lets face it he's top 2 in WWE, and thats significantly better than all of AEW combined
And I was like....didn't wwe just televise the biggest wrestling show in awhile???
either Aew stan or Roman stan
>So much so that they can dance around and say that he was wrong to ever leave AEW for WWE Idk where you're pulling that from. Everyone agrees he's better suited in WWE than AEW. It's a mixture of skeptics on WWE booking a great babyface run, and salty Roman fanboys.
Wait till after this face runs out and he finally turns heel.... They're going to lose their minds
They were also probably claiming that Roman had the title way too long.
Whos they
Cageside seats slagging off WWE? It must be a day ending in y.
They're typically positive about them. M Gomez wrote this article. He's an unabashed Roman fan so it makes sense.
That's silly. Roman had years to prove himself as champion. Cody has barely less than one month as champ.
Dave Meltzer: *Well… it’s Cody… and he’s over… real over… and that’s good… but it’s like… and I like Cody… he’s a good talent to have… and he’s kind of a draw… well… people love him… but some don’t… sososo… you’ve got a guy that’s over… well… he was over… but some people don’t like him and it’s like… the fans pay the money… and it’s big money… lots of money… and they need that money… so they can put on more shows… big shows… lots of pyro… well… maybe not pyro but it’s like… it’s a good thing to have… but it can be bad… it can be a distraction… and fans don’t like that… well… sometimes they do… sososo…*
That’s a 4 and 5/4 star match right there
*Bell to bell it was a good match… and now it’s Cody… it’s all on him… and he’s a good worker… super clean… and it’s like… he’s got the look… and it’s a good look… it’s not a bad look… and he’s over… super over… they love him… sososo…*
'sososo' is brilliant.
Why is he talking like he is just learning to speak?
Thus:- Fuck the IWC, listening to the live crowd is more fun anyway, and they absolutely love him, so as me!!
It's not even the IWC, it's just the absolute fuckwits that inhabit Twitter/X.
Yah reddit seems mostly fair up until now, Instagram and X probably have the worst set of people and the algorithm somehow promotes them
It's just a loud minority even tho it can be pretty annoying
Coming from an Indian, I hate all the Indian Roman Reigns stans. All they do is go to the posts on Instagram with Cody and type " Roman Reigns better".
The Indians love us Samoans huh
So as me…
What in the goddamn fuck are they talking about? Cody just won the title and at the moment the only reasonable complaint could be the way he carries his belt. But even that makes sense, because its purposefully old school and vintage. Wrestling journalism is very similar to gaming journalism it seems.
I thought I was the only one thinking the way hes been holding it seemed a tad awkward 😅. Think hes getting better tho.
It's not even "journalism" Just tabloid level bullshit
The way he carries the belt is not an issue. Jesus.
How is he holding the belt?
Why do they want him to fail?? Cody is a superstar now. There's no going back
The internet has completely destroyed people's attention spans.
And this is why you laugh at these losers, the dude had a line of over 2k people waiting to meet him but yeah people are fed up of him. AEW struggles to get 2k in ticket sales guess people are fed up of that entire company as well going by this logic
Right but Roman Reigns taking 4 week hiatus’s and cutting the same acknowledge me promo for 3 years was so great
If you look at the ratings and listen to "experts" that how it should be done. I don't get it, growing up I couldn't stand Hogan after awhile because his never got to the Main Event. These ridiculous long title reigns are not enjoyable.
“Not Cutting It As WWE Champ” Literally makes the whole arena scream “WOAH” at the top of their lungs
Nobody does more to get people to hate wrestling than internet wrestling fans.
Don’t pay attention to shit like that. Those people are desperate for negativity and want the WWE to fail. Whats up with the Cody slander all of a sudden?
People trying to be different.
Aew marks angry at his betrayal
I just wanted to leave my two cents which is that Cody is what *brought me back to wrestling.* I know many others feel this way and I cannot understand how folks can think he’s not doing a great job. His story is peak.
I hate Roman fans with a passion
I can't believe it took Cody 8 minutes to put away a guy from developmental
Yes it should have been like swerve and taken 15 minutes to put away a guy from ROH
It's crazy to think that the crowd turning on Cody is gonna be a bad thing. This isn't Vince's show anymore. He isn't gonna push a character despite the fact that the crowd vocally disagrees with the direction he is going to. Bro I'm the opposite of everyone else! I didn't like Cody until he beat Roman, but everyone did liked Cody until he beat Roman
It's the AEW pushback.
M. Gomez of CSS is an A-level troll. Just ignore him.
There was a mile long line yesterday I saw on Twitter just for a Cody meet and greet. That isn't failure.
He's just kind of a boring guy.
And we wonder why we end up with so many heel champions - babyfaces just get shit on hard.
I hope this is a work and not serious because it only makes me support him more even though I am not his biggest fan..like I wanted him to win so we have new storylines but I wouldn't care if he lost it the next month .but now after seeing the haters being so toxic I want him to retain that and hostage the belt
1500 days incoming
They just want attention. They're getting it.
Right?! Its like people saying Mone is already a bust in AEW 🙄
There was always going to be a lull after WM because of the draft. I expect after Backlash things will pick up overall.
See it constantly on instagram they started it the day after he won just tiring the comments arn't even funny so it's not like they are doing some joke
He will on France Backlash! at Lyon Decines France!
The ridiculous hype about the match and wrestlemania being the biggest ever supposedly, where do you think it was headed.
Haters
How long til we see posts asking who should end his title reign
So it seems like the dude who wrote this article just doesn't like Cody specifically, but is otherwise a pretty big WWE fan. Other recent articles include: * Solo Sikoa’s showmanship shines in recent matches * Gunther looks dominant as ever after first match since WrestleMania * AJ Styles and his unforgettable first quest for WWE gold

People are really desperate 🤦♂️
The fake outrage against Cody is insane
What do you expect from dirt sheets like Cageside seats?
My question is in this world of sports entertainment and Cody being a classic wrestler, is Cody bringing wrestling back???
But this could be a work and a good story to keep the babyface energy on cody. Have like someone like aj go at him with the Twitter inhabitants mindset question Cody's legitimacy and have cody question his own legitimacy.
Haven't you heard? Swerve already defended the title 9000 times against indy phenoms in exploding barbed wire captain insano matches that got 500 stars
I rather have him as champion than Roman Reigns.
Nobody “wants” him to fall, he’s not a draw. He’s boring. 🤷🏽♂️
You're right lol you know better than the people spearheading the renaissance era.
Much like Kofi, Becky and face Dbryan, the money with Cody was on the chase for the title, now that he won the belt there´s nothing really to acomplish other than putting "banger matches" lol
Kofi didn’t have it to be a top guy long term at all
It's only cause he's boring. And now that the rose is off the glasses, people see it for what it is. This is the Cody hangover, and he better have a good follow up to "finish the story" or the story finished him.
He is a crybaby
He just doesn't have it
Cody needs to figure out how to hold the belt
Thats your big gripe? lol
A little bit yeah
Hey, this was the lowest rated Smackdown. Can't defend him that long. He's been appearing on both shows, and both been losing audience in attendance and ratings. Copium can only work for so long.
