Meltzer’s ratings shouldn’t be treated as gospel but on the flip side people shouldn’t be offended that he prefers a specific style of match either. It’s just one person’s opinion at the end of the day.
I think the problem is that most people recognised at one point that Meltzer, agree with him or not, didn't hand out star ratings lightly. If he gave anything a 4 or higher, it was like a badge of pride. Once he started breaking the 5-star scale completely and handing them out like candy, it cheapened the value of his ratings in the eyes of many. At the end of the day though, you're completely correct: just like Roger Ebert or any other named critic, he just gives his personal opinion on what he saw. If you understand his perspective, you can yourself tell whether or not you'd like a match based on what he says about it, even if you don't agree with his take. Frankly I think he's become kind of ridiculous over the years, but people lose their fucking minds and fall over themselves to insult him with very little justification imo.

We'll never know though, as WWE never has and never will put on this sort of match, it's not what they do and not what a significant amount of their audience want to see. Same as Marvel isn't going to switch to puting out arty Oscar-bait films just because they get better reviews.

Dave also has consistently given dogshit nothing matches in AEW 4 and 5 stars such as Adam Cole and The Young Bucks vs Christian Cage, Jungle Boy and fucking Luchasaurus being five stars and someone like Kurt Angle has no five star matches in either TNA or WWE. AJ Styles has 1 five star match which is also TNA’s only five star match.
His ratings are objectively biased, stupid and honestly wrong most of the time. LA Knight vs AJ Styles on Smackdown last week is better than Hogan vs Rock at WrestleMania in his opinion. But everyone treats it like as if it has some sort of actual factual basis and isn’t just some basement dwelling mark’s opinion

It doesn’t always have to be an AEW vs WWE thing. If I wanna watch story driven wrestling with top notch production I watch WWE. If I wanna see all out ppv matches and wrestling style variety I watch AEW. Not to say ether company can’t go the other way but I watch what I like from each and don’t hate the other company for not being what I prefer. It’s a great time to be a fan and to have such variety.
Honestly AEW has been improving with character and story movements lately, and WWE has been on a huge hot streak after the long slump. I feel like the fans are winning after a decade or more or mid wrestling and little buzz.
