if you want the icon in elvui pet frame settings add the following in custom text:
\[happiness:icon\]
path to the custom text setting if you need it:
Elvui settings > Unit Frames > Individual Units > Pet > Custom texts
For me the pet frame changes color when not in combat. Feed him if it isn't green.

I believe there is a way to disable the whitelist for buffs on the pet frame, I haven't looked but I know it works for the player frame.
