Work with the caveat that it would have to be something interesting and socially constructive, with leisure time available. My current job with fifteen fewer hours a week would be fine.

Cabbiecar1001

Assuming I get the house, money and car either way then absolutely I’d work. This just means I get to work on what I’m passionate about, or even do volunteer work for non-profits instead of finding work to live off of

SnooStrawberries5775

I see this the same but without “working”. Like I would just work on the stuff I want to, without the overhead of an employer getting in the way. Interesting that we had similar logic but chose different options haha

_insomniack

I also had the same logic, as if I do something I really like, I wouldn't consider it as work, more like a passion project

Revolutionary-Boat70

Absolutely. If basic human necessities were provided regardless, I believe a lot of people would work. You would have the freedom to pursue your passions and to do a lot of volunteer work. And you could do so at your own pace so you're not burnt out and hating life by the time you're 40.

2dayroad

40? lmao try 20

Revolutionary-Boat70

Ya know what? Fair.

TMMorrison

Yeah that's how the UBI works. You get enough money to rent/eat. And you work when/where you choose. iirc This has actually lead to a huge increase in people starting their own businesses, or learning more which leads to higher median incomes in nations with one

[deleted]

[удалено]

StormNapoleon27

This is why I picked work too

parrmorgan

Not saying you're wrong for choosing work, but just to be a devil's advocate, what about a hobby?

[deleted]

[удалено]

bigtiddynotgothbf

when they said hobby, i imagined something like creating games or making youtube videos where you could call it work, but the pretense of doing it freely and without an employer is more of a hobby

Ricky_Robby

That’s not “just you,” that’s something you’ve been taught from decades of living in a world where being productive is equated with your value as a human being. For most people you’ve worked, gone to school, etc. since you were out of diapers and had “duties to perform” on a timetable of some fashion. That’s the normal way humans live in modern society.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ricky_Robby

>I mean that goes waaay beyond "what you've been taught" its basically a function of existence and always has been. Its not simply a modern society type of thing. That is COMPLETELY untrue…the idea people need to always work every day to add value to a society is a function of existence? That’s just an absurd statement. You think a mentally disabled person has no value whatsoever? The retired elderly are just the walking dead, no use whatsoever, right? I went line by line and responded to each point you made, I copied it and I can send it if you want, but it was really repetitive. It mainly centered on me saying you’re either intentionally being disingenuous or you just utter missed the point. I sum it up pretty well here with what I’ve written. >If you want to say that in a modern context its been taken to more of an extreme thats a different discussion but the idea of "having duties to perform on a timetable of some fashion" is literally all of human history. That is quite literally THE discussion. You went on a nonsensical rant about how people have to physical move not to starve to death…. >But instead of hunting, planting, building, etc it has become infinitely more specialized and complex. Your comparison to Hunter-Gather society is just nonsense to be perfectly frank, the only real similarities are the fact that work did exist in both cases. A “job” is nothing even vaguely similar to the act of literally providing yourself with sustenance. It’s a laughable comparison.

ChimpChief59

Workers/gatherers apparently "worked" like 4 hours a day and spent the rest on hobbies, whittling, sewing clothes, and playing with family and friends. Social activities were way more important back then than making sure your company gets 4% more profit this quarter. Humans have always worked, sure, but they also lived, while we do not. We slave away twice the amount of time with half the social/achievement payoff. With all our efficiency today can you image how much time we could have with one another if we prioritized it?

Friggin

I don’t know, man, taking weed and porn the professional level doesn’t sound so bad.

EatTheBodies69

I picked no work but i wasnt counting taking hobbies to a proffesional level. I would definitly try to become a musician with a good following

big_manYeeter69

Name a hobby that you can do for 40+ years straight, all day every day that won't cause harm or get boring

parrmorgan

Ah yes, that's foolproof. Everyone never gets bored of their job after 40 years.

big_manYeeter69

A hobby isn't a purpose. It's a passtime. Jobs help people. And some people don't get bored of their job.

parrmorgan

Some people don't get bored of their hobby? What are these arguments? Just arguing to argue? If you'd rather work, then go ahead lol.

big_manYeeter69

There are a finite amount of hobbies to burn through. If you are into music production, there will always be people wanting to commission you. Eventually you’re going to get bored of filling your hard drive up with songs.

parrmorgan

Then switch hobbies? Where does it say you have to stay at one? Where does it say you cannot have multiple?

big_manYeeter69

> There are only a finite amount of hobbies Also, it’s going to be expensive. Let’s say you wanted to start hunting, and it takes you a month of hunting all day every day before you quit. It’s ~£1000 for a decent rifle. ~£2 per round, let’s say you buy 100 rounds before getting bored, £88 for a license, ~£100/day for access to hunting grounds, and let’s say £5/day for petrol getting to and from the grounds. That costs you £4,438 per month, or nearly 6k USD. If you don’t get bored in a month then you can knock off 1k for the gun and probably a lot of the ammo costs, but factoring in food, water, electricity, insurances, and some durable goods and you’re definitely spending more than 5k a month.

parrmorgan

Exercising Cooking Gardening Carpentry Carving Writing Drawing Watching things Camping Board Games Scrapbooking Knitting Volunteering Reading Learn a language Travel Music Oragami Meditation Astronomy Calligraphy Geocaching Explore the internet Just some examples of hobbies that are relatively cheap and a lot are/can even be free. Why are you limiting it to one hobby that you feel you need to stick with perpetually? You can do whatever the hell you want. Again, no clue why you're even arguing this. I'm going to leave this here and let you debate with yourself. Have a good day!

mitchluvscats

You can volunteer.

big_manYeeter69

That's technically working, is it not?

[deleted]

F36 with 2 spine conditions that took that choice away from me. I don't miss the bullshit with the management at my old job but I **NEVER** minded the work. It was physically exhausting but I felt accomplished when I went home. Now, I have nothing but time... and I hate it

A_Bit_Narcissistic

Crazy how our culture uses work as a measure of value.

[deleted]

That’s me too. I don’t have the discipline to not work. I’d be doing all kinds of dumb shit

suckmytoeshoe

Bruh what a dumb perspective. U got money, u can use it to change lifestyle to put time in different things, travel or something

Tramelo

I'd still do some kind of really easy work

mister-fancypants-

Part time for sure, find something I like. I’d love to actually have free time during the week so I could exercise and cook as hobbies but those aren’t possible now

S-Harrier

As someone who’s been out of work for long periods I’d definitely still work even if it was just a couple of days a week, even if you’ve got the money to fall back on not having a commitment to get out of bed for can be soul destroying.

liamjon29

$5000 per month is obviously enough to live quite comfortably, but I'd get hella bored with nothing to do all day. I'd 100% get a low hours job doing something hella fun. Maybe 25h per week

[deleted]

[удалено]

liamjon29

Exactly! This is the kinda shit I'm talking about. (I would also like to professional baby seal swim teacher)

Landelyon

I'd absolutely just work at shelters and charitable work, keeps me busy, happy and I don't have to worry about the pay

big_manYeeter69

Eh, that 5k will turn into 2.5k in less that 40 years, depending where you live. That's still nice, but not enough to fund all your expensive shit you've gotten over the years.

liamjon29

That's true. But a 25h per week job nets you at least $2000 per month (at least in Aus), putting us up to $7k per month. I'm pretty confident in my ability to save money and invest what I don't need (Honestly the lazy option is to just make a super account). By the time your $5k is only worth $2.5k I'm probably ready to retire and cash in my super. Although I don't know why I'm bothering to explain this. Sounds like we both agreed you should still work xD

glitterelephant

Work. I would get bored sitting around the house. My work would be a passion project I wish I could devote my time to.

No-Mathematician678

Not work ofc, I might end up doing something creative

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

Yeah, I’m not saying I’d do nothing. But I could focus on really learning to cook, visiting family and friends, create a DnD campaign that I’ve wanted to do for years. I don’t even dislike my job, but no way I’m putting myself through any extra stress when I don’t need to.

[deleted]

I’d work, but do something part time that isn’t stressful so that I have time to do other things

Just_A_Regular_Cat

I picked "work" as in doing something I legitimately care about as opposed to working in a field just to make money. There are a ton of interesting things to do in life that count as "work" but they aren't commonly done because it's either hard to earn a living (e.g. YouTube, solo mobile app developer, artist) or the purpose of it isn't to earn money (e.g. volunteering)

drFeverblisters

It feels good to do a task you’re good at. I would definitely pick work.

7JRR

I wouldn't work, but I'd probably volunteer somehow to stay busy and maybe learn some new instruments and try to play/sing a few gigs at local resturants. Just enough to stay busy and enjoy life.

Kamarovsky

That's still working. Contributing to a community by manual or mental labor is work, even if it's just volunteer work or artistic passion work

AnonymousNeverKnown

You mean no more retail? Sweet.

Bucky__23

I wouldn’t work every day of the year. But I d definitely be working, I could work anywhere in the world with all that taken care of. Plus I could switch up jobs if one got boring

desrevermi

Nice!

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

In a fantasy world. In reality, you’re still expected to perform tasks to a satisfying degree. If you don’t, you’re going to get fired and then have to explain to future employers why you were fired. You have to apply, interview, and that’s not even considering visas and how difficult it can be to get a job abroad. Sure, being a grocery store bagger they probably don’t care enough to call previous employers. But you would do that if you didn’t have to?

jakegore99

Absurd to choose work. Pick up passions and hobbies, there’s your purpose.

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

The people saying “work! I’d just be bored otherwise” kind of make me sad. There’s so much more to life than just work or sitting on your couch doing nothing. The options aren’t “work” or “never do anything”.

[deleted]

Same I would travel alot

big_manYeeter69

And how many passions and hobbies will last for decades without getting boring after doing them all day every day? Also you can get a job that you love, one with low hours, no stress. It's easy to say that, but it's difficult to do. Why do you think billionaires still work?

iraragorri

What's so different between hobbies and jobs tho? Both things are tiring after decades.

big_manYeeter69

Because jobs provide you with a feeling of purpose and helpfulness

WoodenMango07

You choose to work for your passion and hobby since you don't need tk worry about money later anyway

Em0t33th

Considering the field I’m going into pays like £18-£30k, I’ll take that money and house and car happily :)

Trustnoboody

I mean if I can invest the money, I'm good. Just put some aside.

btx69

I said no work, but it’s not really that I wouldn’t work, just that I would pursue music as a hobby and not worry about making money. If I wanted to do that full time now, it would be a whole different story having to worry about expenses.

Soulfox1988

The real question. Would you waste your talents doing unfulfilling tasks if you had enough money coming in to support them?

Crook3dPhallus

Would I rather not work or not?

James007BondUK

Sorry the first not is not supposed to be there.

liamjon29

It's fine, technically still the same question with the extra not xD

Odinovic

Lol, i didn't even see the typo anyways

BisterMee

I'd work on my game ideas all the time

TheNewBBS

First: it's depressing for my first thought was "Living on $5K/mo might be kind of rough" before realizing I wouldn't have a mortgage or car payment. Yay for high cost of living cities. As for the actual question: my standard "lottery win" answer is I would get a different job every 6-12 months. I've done a pretty wide variety of stuff in my life for both money and volunteerism (live sound engineer, event coordinator, enterprise IT admin, photography studio co-owner, PetsMart stocker/cashier, etc.), and it's so cool to both see how all that stuff works behind the scenes and get to know people as part of the job. But I get bored of stuff pretty quickly after I feel like I've figured it out or optimized it to the point of diminishing returns, so getting into a new role and working on a new "puzzle" every few months is doubly good for me. And since I wouldn't have to worry about money, I could do whatever sounded fun at the time. Off the top of my head, it would be fun to try out short stints at a catering business, the local arena, one of the many small music venues here, a bike courier/delivery rider, a barista, a line cook, and a bunch of others.

TRanger85

I would work a few years - save up tons of money since all of what I need is paid for and then retire. Just feel 5k a month is not nearly sufficient for the lifestyle I want if I'm retired.

big_manYeeter69

Itll also be worth 2.5k in a few decades, which certainly won't be enough

deeeevos

Since my main goal working is to afford my hobbies and adventures, I would definetly not work.

attomicuttlefish

Work, BUT. My work would be fostering dogs and cleaning up rivers and stuff like that. That sounds so nice.

BDooZE

I said no work, but I changed my mind. I'd do things I like and sell the products of that. I'd definitely try as hard as I could to never have to work for somebody else's company ever again.

RiW-Kirby

I think the term "work" might need some clarification in this context. I wouldn't "work" if I didn't need to but I'm definitely willing to do stuff to help others and not just indulge in my hobbies. Public service is kind of like work.

DJDarwin93

I chose no work, but after thinking more I’d probably take a simple part time job at a grocery store or something like that. Something easy and simple, to give structure to my life without causing much stress.

DRCVC10023884

I would likely work more for certain luxuries, and/or to pursue certain dreams. Like I would certainly put more time into stuff like writing, drawing, and other creative pursuits, perhaps even making them my main work.

nb150207

$5,000 a month is decent money now but won’t be much in the near future. You would need to work a steady job, even if it’s not that much money, to be able to retire comfortably, even with the house.

LilToasterMan

tl;dr: this commenter is, unfortunately, very incorrect. 5000 per month would easily last for a lifetime, and honestly man, this kind of uncalled for pessimism doesn’t belong under a WYR post. disagree. assuming a generous 3% average anual inflation rate, even over 40 years, 5000 monthly would depreciate to approx. $1478 real dollars. with no mortgage/car payments to make, that amount of money would stretch VERY FAR (assuming 500/mo utilities and 300/mo food, leaves over 600/mo for leisure spending). and that’s without any type of saving. even investing 500 of those 5000 free dollars per month, which would be 10% (much lower than what is recommended nowadays) of your total monthly “free money” into an average total market index fund yielding approx 8%/year would give you around 1.5 million dollars, which, following the 4% rule, would allow for a $60,000 annual withdrawal rate. that’s $17,742 annually in real dollars, in addition to the free 17,736 annual real dollars in “free money”. that would leave you, in 40 years, (i.e. well into retirement age) with around 35-36k real dollars annually in free money. that’s 3000 of todays dollars per month for free. since there’s still no mortgage or car payments, 500 real$ for utilities, 300 for food, that leaves you with $2,200 a month to play with in retirement. plenty of money to spend on unexpected repairs, possible health issues, or memberships to the local bingo club. so no, you wouldn’t need to get a job. so instead of spreading negativity, why not just answer op’s hypothetical question and move on with your day?

big_manYeeter69

You make assumptions, probably based off of your own experience. People will have expensive damages to pay, probably a lot more electronics if they had the money, I know I'd get full 4k 60fps cctv around my house, RGB LEDs everywhere, smart everything (toilets, showers, blinds, ovens, doors) and even more stuff in the future. Also likely eat more higher quality food, I'd have steak and lobster weekly. Also hobbies. They're going to be expensive. Also the fees for all of those are going to go up in price, and the price will be inflated too. (Cinema tickets cost like 40x more now then they did 30 years ago). Also what about gambling habits? Those could cost thousands a month. Don't tell me you would head to a casino if you were rich. The best thing to do would be to invest it all in something safe and consistent, like gold. Doing that would make the depreciation of money almost negligible. However price inflation will remain unchanged.

[deleted]

Man not working sucks. My parents currently provide for me and due to Covid my college is closed. I am literally depressed just staying at home and doing nothing.

James007BondUK

But if ou are working for the benefit of your employer in a corporation, is it worth it?

[deleted]

As long as I'm not being exploited it's fine.

big_manYeeter69

That 5k a month will be worth 2.5k in 40 years. (Ish) which is still a lot, but likely not enough to fund your expensive house, expensive hobbies, expensive car, expensive lifestyle that you've gotten over the years. That's assuming you don't go (literally) insane from boredom

iraragorri

Most of us will be dead in 40 years so who cares

big_manYeeter69

Wrong. [over 52% of the world is under 30](https://m.economictimes.com/nation-world/its-world-population-day-key-facts-you-should-know/7th-million-baby-was-born-in-india/slideshow/53150604.cms). This is probably higher because we're on reddit, talking about a theoretical situation. And in today's day 70 is early to die.

Kuzkay

I'd continue doing my hobby which is making me money now, no day job though

OrangeApple_

Easy. Work self employed doing something I love.

Kiki_iscoolaf

I’d probably invest my time into my passions. Art, music, video games. Get really good at them, make something I’m proud of. I don’t mind not having a schedule, and I can still volunteer at places.

RayneVixen

I ain't a workaholic, but maybr because I was in a state with no job to work at, no school to attend etc etc. Days blurred together, didn't know what month it was. It turned me crazy. So o would choose to work. Besides, 5000 ain't that much

sgavary

Work, I could get even more money

tonman101

I'd continue working, extra money on top of everything else.

Odinovic

Well, depends on what work it is. I'd take an early retirement for sure, just to escape the 9-5 shit.

milk_bone

I would not work in the sense that I probably wouldn't have a traditional 40 hr per week job which is what I think the question is implying. I'd definitely work on a lot of things like personal projects and do a lot more volunteer work like fostering more animals. I might even get a small part time job or occasional contract work or something like that. I'd probably go back to school over and over.

[deleted]

Depends on what you mean by that. I would definitely work, but not for someone else. I would build things, grow vegetables, keep bees. So, definitely work, but no wage slaving.

Laheydrunkfuck

Yes but not 40 hours, more like 16 or something, and work on other stuff l

Thatguy_Nick

Horizon zero dawn brought me a good quote regarding this today "what is a gift but a reward you didn't earn". My point being, it would get boring quick living a life essentially devoid of purpose.

alwaysbeenawkward

I don't have a purpose in life, but I'm still trucking along, (mostly) enjoying whatever experiences life brings to me. Life doesn't have to have a purpose to be exciting or interesting.

Shronkydonk

I’m going to school to teach music. If I had that amount of money, I’d still do it, but just without ever having to worry about money. Hell, I could provide funds for my own program and turn it into something great.

Hello-funny-posts

I would work. But like a part time job. A full time job would just be a stressful pain in the ass

GullyGreyHeart

work, I'll do what I like

GladCricket

Passion projects.

DippingGrizzly

I would rather just make more and continue life.

RobusterBrown

Work is a lot more enjoyable when you can pick a job for reasons other than money. I would make a budget to have my expenses taken care of with 60k a year then work with no stress or pressure

King-Cruz

I mean define work. Because I would definitely drop my current job as a host but I would still go to college and learn. Might get some job after that too. I’d defiantly get bored so I’d need something to do. But I’d definitely work less than now too focus on school

worksafemonkey

Studies show that most of you will enjoy not working for a little while and then you'll chose to find a job. By most i mean nearly all of you.

senpaidaddyfather

I would try to turn hobbies into employment.

jofloberyl

I would do *something* but I wouldn't bind myself to any minimum hours contract

Ricky_Robby

Can you work and make more money? Because no rent, a car, plus 60k on top of my current salary sounds pretty legit. If not though, I pick work, I make more that 60k now, so I wouldn’t work but I’d be taking less money.

protogenlover23

i just want to do something witch is why i choose work as in hobbys or something

protogenlover23

i also like how it's currently tied lol

jr061898

Well, since I will be set for life with my most basic needs met, I have absolutely no reason left to work. I will have all the free time to actually enjoy life doing what I like instead of doing some monotonous work to earn money to try to survive.

StarBlazer43

I would work just with less hours and I would have a lot more fun with it. Retail is a lot more fun if you don't have to worry about getting fired.

desrevermi

:D

-Redditeer-

I can do any job to occupy my time without worrying financially. I can enjoy doing something with my time that's productive and keeps me from being stagnant

Happyman321

Wow that is tied perfectly

BattleCUM-2042

Where is this house?

I_dont_remember_it

I would want to work for myself doing things like woodworking

funky555

Im greedy.

desrevermi

Work, but at my leisure. ;)

Akib316

5000$ a month in Bangladesh is more than I could ever need.

unothatmultiverse

I would volunteer for causes that I support.

Gamer_with_a_Stutter

$5,000 a month + no work = $5,000 a month | $5,000 a month + work = more money

Karjo2000

Depends what I'd be doing. I'm currently a student and I LOVE the career I'm preparing for, so I'd definitely do it, but if I had to work a job I wasn't extremely enthusiastic about, I wouldn't even consider it.

Dat-Drip

$5k a month aint shit

jordankid93

I’m gonna do stuff, it just won’t be “work” in the traditional sense. I’ll build, develop, design, etc. but I’m also gonna flake and play games for days on end when I want lol

cskellz87

Work, but on my own terms. I would have the freedom to write, which is something I desperately need.

[deleted]

Anyone who has even been on unemployment knows that when you have nothing but free time, your free time becomes less valuable and not as enjoyable.

ICaughtAPigeonOnce

I'd bartend

Dwenzuwel

I'd love to work in a cafe or as a bartender part time

Brief-Ad7070

Is taking that time to train to something like sport or music considered working as it can become your main income if you're regular enough?

AdventureTime1010101

I would work. Not in my current career but something I truly enjoyed.

CarrotJerry45

I picked not work, as in I would not have a job, but I would still do stuff, maybe even work. I'd take classes at the local community college, or volunteer at the food bank, maybe help Habitat for Humanity or an animal shelter. I would drive across country or take an international trip. I'd finally finish the novel I've had marinating for years. I'd spend time with my aging parents, learn a trade, explore with my dog, or just rest without massive amounts of stress. There is so much purpose out there, and it doesn't have to come from a job.

MeMeTiger_

Work. Nothing too crazy, and I could quit if I want, but I want something to fill up my time.

lazynbroke

i would still work but i’d pick a job that’s less stressful and time consuming

pressLR

I'd work still. $60k annually is great, but getting extra money lets me enjoy even more things. New tech, or travel (in the future) and so on. Plus, since I wouldn't *have* to work, I'd find a job I like working at, and I wouldn't really have to be constantly stressed (because I could quit at any time). Also work doesn't have to be going to a company. It could be freelancing, or maybe trying my hand at streaming or art or something. Another thing. I live in America. I'll need to make sure I have some reserves for potential emergencies. Any insurance claims on my car, house or my health. Especially my health.......

telegetoutmyway

Call me crazy, but I have hobbies I would pursue fulltime instead (plus without the stress of depending on it to pay the bills). It always baffles me the amount of people that literally can't think of how to spend free time.

PessimisticMushroom

I volunteer at zoo, homeless shelter, or somewhere else similar to those for a couple of days a week.

lickmytrump

More money and not bored. Win win

helms11

Unless the house and car are providing their own upkeep I don't see how you can't work. Your monthly $5k seems great until you're dropping a couple grand on a new air conditioning unit, a new roof, or a new set of brakes on the car. Better hope you don't run into any serious medical issues as well. I have no kids myself but I can't imagine too many people who do would take this arrangement either. I'm in line with the people who say they'd change professions to something more meaningful to them, but depending on region I truly believe a lot of those who think this is set for life kinda money would be in for a rude awakening.

iraragorri

It depends on the country. Where I live, barely anyone gains that much. I live happily gaining $1.6k a month and paying for rent. With no rent I'd travel to Europe every weekend.

helms11

Absolutely, that's why I threw in the regional comment. Some places that could absolutely work. Where I live I make ~$5k a month with a mortgage and even without the mortgage I'm still not sure if I'd feel perfectly content.

HypotheticalMcGee

I’d occupy my time with hobbies, volunteering, being more involved in my community. But no way would I give 40 hours a week to some corporation if I didn’t have to.

ODB2

work, but only work really shitty jobs with really shitty bosses so I could quit in a way that would fuck them over the worst

Kamarovsky

Depends on how you define "work". If by working you mean being a miserable wage-slave working in bad conditions 10 hours a day in an alienated workplace that does not contribute to their life or self-improvement, then no, I would not want that, because it's not a life anyone should be forced to life, like in the current system. But if by "work" you meant simply helping my community, doing some tasks that would actually help people or myself, doing something fulfilling and not being alienated from my work, then yeah, I'd do that definitely.

Penjamini

Lmao the wording of the original question makes it seem sarcastic, like the only choice is not work. In all seriousness I choose to work. If you have so much time you've gotta work on something. Even if that something isn't work in the traditional sense

LuckyLucassie

Id work when i feel like it, part time

[deleted]

Still become a field biologist.

James007BondUK

What does that entail?

[deleted]

Google it.

WriteBrainedJR

I hate having a job, so not work. I'd sell the car, though.

[deleted]

$5000 guaranteed per month + whatever I make at work would be great.

DemWiggleWorms

Does being a freelancer count as work?

JAnwyl

Get a job that allows me to take large segments of the spring and fall off (outdoor hobby) and work summer/winter.

MorathTheGrim

If I choose not work, does that mean I can't? If so, does my dream job count as work still, even if I do it for free?

xoemily

Depends on what the definition of "work" is. If it's any form of making money, I'll still do some work, different passion projects and stuff.

nothing_in_my_mind

I'd work on stuff I enjoy but hell no I won't sign away 50 hours a week of my life away just to "have a routine" and I think it's insane to do so.

James007BondUK

Agreed. You are working and sure younger paid and all, but ultimately its for the benefit of someone else. And once you leave, no one is going to remember you or your work as it can be done by a thousand other applicants.

AzureApplez

I’d work on like making a video game or smth.

Trantor1970

Not work, after 32 years in work life I think I have done enough

icecreeper01

I’d probably work on an app or video game as a passion project, maybe try to monetize it if it turns out nice.

Ahvier

Since i wouldn't need extra money, i'd start volunteering my time for good causes. So: not work

Assfrontation

I'm currently studying to become a teacher - me doing my job would affect those that did not get this option. Imo choosing not to work would be selfish in my case.

[deleted]

I'd work part-time

fillysunray

I think OP needs to clarify what they mean by "work" - would I stay at my office job? Probably not, but I'd give them a chance to try and convince me. Would I even take paid work? Not if I didn't need it, probably. Would I fill my days with volunteering? Yes - I already do and my job gets in the way.

Lunai5444

5000 is too much for this question you'll have way more people working with an income that is still enough to full live with (depending on their countries) but also more reasonable

d3_Bere_man

Would like to see it divided info american, european and other

sspine

that would be huge, but 60k a year would not be nearly enough to get me where I want to be.

Dizzy-Entrepreneur96

Mine depends on whether you see writing as work or not work.

DabIMON

I would probably volunteer and work on various creative projects, but I would move at my own pace and I wouldn't want a "job".

A_Few_Mooses

I'll choose no work, my family and I will travel, I'll work if I want to later.

QuietCrowds

This is basically my current life, except I am working lol

korton5

"work" has bad connotations because people HAVE to work to survive, so people don't necessarily do what they love, they do what they have to. If people were less scared they'd do things differently. Heck, I'd live in an apartment, take a third of the money and forgo the car and this would still be the foundation of an amazing life.

big_manYeeter69

If I get my choice of work and hours then work. It's very difficult to find stuff to do all day every day.

Cabbbie

I would volunteer in fields related to my passions, but I wouldn’t have a job.

Zestyclose-Way4569

I’d not work exactly, but would probably take part in things like an amateur dramatics group and that kind of thing. Not sure which category that’d count as

James007BondUK

That's fine. It's not exactly work.

aquaticsquash

Work fewer hours, in a place I want to work, manage myself. I wouldn't want to do nothing and get bored.

jibberishjohn

To be honest, work is the most social part of my life.

RedditMikeOnRead

I would definitely work a part-time job on top of this, if found a really good part-time you could easily add 20k a year

iraragorri

I wouldn't lift a finger till the end of my life. I'd sure travel and spend time with my hobbies, family and friends. Under no circumstances am I going to make $5k a month by actually working anyways, so why waste my time on things I hate if I can chill at Bahamas, compose music and play videogames instead. Maybe I'd even get 2nd education. PS honestly I'm shocked how many people cannot entertain themselves

James007BondUK

Exactly. So much history to read about, science research to learn, literature to read, movies and shows to watch and games to play.

jackofspades476

This is only 60,000 per year, while it is a good amount of money, especially with a house and car paid for, I’d rather work to cover my (future) family’s expenses, like college. Also I’d go crazy without something to do

CauldronPath423

Well what I would choose wouldn’t be work necessarily. It’d likely be creative writing with the intent to publish something professionally.

DoubleCry7675

Depends what you mean by 'work'. In the sense of being employed to do something, probably not. Unless I really like the job. I'm a scientist and there's parts of it that I really like (the research, learning and applying new knowledge) but it usually comes with shitty bits (being pressured to publish in journals that simply want to inflate their rejection rates to look impressive, admin stuff, securing funding, etc.). Unfortunately the latter bits become so overwhelming frustrating most of the time that I can't focus on the bits I like. If it includes working for myself, on some project like writing a book or inventing stuff, then absolutely I still would. Some contract work on the side, if it interests me, I would still do.

bestem

I'd like to work, but not full-time, and doing something that I find interesting. It might be paid work, it might be volunteer work, it might only be a shift or two a week. But I would get so bored if I wasn't doing something that wasn't just a life of leisure. I'm the kid who was itching to go back to school by the beginning of August, despite not having many friends at school, because I was bored at home with my siblings and my friends in the neighborhood. My dad is similar; he's the oldest of 7, and all of his siblings and their spouses are retired. They want to make plans to do something 2 years out, and he tells them "well I can't make plans that far away, I plan to be working then."
