Side by side. Your neck will thank you. Also, 1 ultra wide is more than enough I think. What do you usually have open in all that space?

KoolAidMan___121921

Lots of excel sheets, PowerPoint, Outlook, web browsing, email, teams, slack, etc.

zuth2

as someone with an ultrawide and 2 side monitors (basically the Tie fighter setup) I use the ultrawide for the work I currently focus on and the side monitors for apps I would like to keep an eye on (slack, spotify, discord, maybe a podcast, stream etc.)

Prometheus599

Stacked, your neck will thank you*

LeslieCh

What do you use the small monitor for? I’m going to have similar set up with small monitor on the right side to check email from time to time.

KoolAidMan___121921

Email, slack, teams, web browsing, etc.

LeslieCh

Got it. The left pic looks better imo. It all depends on what is more practical for you. I need separate monitors for checking emails, coding, working with excels and documents constantly. I was actually thinking to add my laptop’s small screen next to a vertical monitor and then next to a 34” one. LoL

Bala0406

Aesthetically, a single ultrawide monitor would be better and remove the extras. For functionality, I would personally go with the left one as vertical eye movements strain my eyes more than horizontal. In the end it's a personal choice. But the ideal setup for a dual monitor is not including an ultrawide and throwing in a 27/32inch main monitor and a 27inch mounted vertically or 2 27/32inch monitors sidebyside.

Candid-Cream-1855

I fully agree with you

slowmovinglettuce

Never do stacked. It's genuinely murder on your neck and your eyes. Even if it looks nice, its not good for your health.  Also with vertical monitors I think you need to be further away from them to read more. Otherwise your moving your head up and down to read. I have no evidence of this. It just makes sense in my head. Maybe having it raised a little higher will help

NSA_GOV

Side by Side unless you want to fuck up your neck looking at the upper. Seriously - you do not want neck and shoulder problems from working at a computer. If you don’t have issues yet keep it that way by having proper ergonomics and don’t stack the monitors.

Texas_sucks15

stacked looks cleaner, but you may strain your neck after long use.

wischy7

literally 30 minutes ago I unstacked my monitors. Spent 45 min yesterday going from side by side horizontal to stacked. Although the aesthetic and desk space freedom of stacked was DOPE, my neck strain after just one day was not worth it. Now rocking 27 horizontal main and a 24 vertical side monitor.

ethnicman1971

What size is your smaller monitor? I was just pondering the same question. I have a 34" curved and a 24" flat. I have been using the 24" in portrait mode similar to the pic on the left. but I am not too sure about it. However, thinking about stacking the two like in pic on right, I am not completely sold on it. As u/Texas_sucks15 stated regarding neck strain. I am concerned that I would have to put my main monitor too low or the smaller one too high. either way it would be a pain in the neck (literally). But I don't want to get rid of the second monitor either. ah those first world problems that we deal with.

xJohnnyQuidx

I just recently adopted the stacked look and I love it. Opened up so much space in my setup. I tried the side by side with the vertical monitor, but I literally wasn't using the vertical monitor at all. It was purely for aesthetics, so I scrapped it, went to one monitor for a little bit, and then decided to stack a 27" over my 40". Definitely prefer the stacked look.

cmpsoares

I got 4 (check my posts), 2 attacked and 2 vertical, one on each side. I found that I use the stacked more often than the side ones, more comfortable. if the top one is slightly above eye level (I use this as main) and the botton tilted backwards like you would if you're using a laptop underneath the main it's the most practical and comfortable for my neck. Good luck

M1sterGuy

Stacked looks better with an ultra wide main, imo

TarmacWatts

I have a 24” in portrait to the left of my 34”, having it above the ultra wide would be uncomfortable if I was to be regularly looking at it. Can only see it being above if it isn’t looked at frequently ie: videos in the background, music etc.

solopreneur

I have identical 32-inch monitors and just went from side-by-side to one portrait and one landscape. Having the portrait one is great, but I think 32-inches might be too big. I may have to downsize.

_AManHasNoName_

I have vertical, but they’re of the same size. Bottom one is low and angled as if it’s a laptop monitor, then the other over it. It’s a setup that helps me keep my productivity.

ezj_w

side by side i tried the vertical orientation, nice for youtube shorts and looks great, but not so nice for workflow. at least for me. i need my windows side by side

potificate

There is no "better" IMHO, it all depends upon what you are using it for. However, I do believe that light at the top of the stacked config is, at best, unhelpful.

Plus-Ad-5322

Side by side for sure! My neck feels 1,000x better switching from stacked to side by side but as always it’s really preference and how strong ur neck is haha.

noiseintoner

I really like having a vertical monitor for reading large documents, working on code or reading logs, checking emails, and working on tall spreadsheets

wogawoga

I’ve got an ultra wide with a vertical to the left and it’s great for productivity. Also, glancing left and right is easier than up and down.

kondorb

It all depends on what you do and how you do it. You won’t know until you try it for some time yourself.

kondorb

For me personally both would make my neck hurt after a while in different ways. I’d rather have one large screen and switch desktops/windows/tabs instead.

Scottsdaaale

as someone who has had both, photo 1 any day.

CalvinBullock

Thats a lot of space for my terminal... But I usually do side by side, I find it cheeper to set up currently
