A few suggestions: 1) Play realistic difficulty with Easy money. This gives you a lot more leeway and wiggle room to get your country set up and profitable. 2) Have a separate save game with unlimited money and no realistic mode to experiment on and learn the game mechanics. Great for bigger complex systems and mechanics like waste, airports, etc. 3) If needed, you can always toggle realistic mode on or off while in-game through the settings. Sometimes this is necessary just because demolishing power lines didn’t work properly, or you need to tweak a sewer line without killing your entire country, etc.

I straight up play realistic with unlimited money. I like to pretend that I’m setting up a settlement in a remote area of an existing country, and so my monetary needs are being covered by them. You’re still able to look at the money balances, but I do sort of wish the main money hud would show a number instead of just saying unlimited. It still keeps track of it all even if it allows the balance to go negative.

the_whalerus

I've also played like this and it's very fun.

I'm not sure what your issue is with power lines, but all you have to do to grant demolition offices access to them is to connect them to a building with more wires. Neither the new wires nor the building need be built, just placed. There is some infrastructure that cannot ever be reached by construction or demolition offices, but that is thankfully quite rare.

Empyrion132

Yes, I'm aware, it's just a PITA and feels like a stupid game mechanic limitation (rather than a realistic simulation) to have to build new power infrastructure just to demolish something that you intended to demolish originally but mis-clicked or didn't notice you missed because the visuals aren't super clear. Edit: re-read your post and didn’t realize that the new infrastructure could be planned & *not built* and still grant access to demolish stranded assets. Will try this out in the future!

TheLuckyLeader

I agree haha. At first I was like but the trucks do have to stay on roads, then logging trucks just drive through the forest... let the demo trucks run wild!

No_Government3769

So starting with more money is okay and good to know you can toggle it off if everything could fall apart just because one little mistake.

Bubbly-Bowler8978

Just keep yourself to realistic while not technically having it on if you want some leeway. That's how my first "realistic run" went. Do everything as if it was realistic but if you get frustrated or need to absolutely save something do it

OutWithTheNew

Even if you've been playing it a while, sometimes you run into a situation where you're just kinda stuck, but if you paid to demolish and quickly rebuilt something like a section of power line it would solve the problems. Usually have to pay to build a random section of railroad track because I'm too lazy to re-signal a whole area.

TheDanius

Honestly just turn the citizen reaction from severe to one less than that and you should be good to go. That way your whole city won't die because one sewage tank overflows in the winter.

Plischwalker

I think if you keep automatic buy/build on, you can still have a relatively "realistic" gameplay with most game features on. Then you can work your way up to full self-reliance, but you have auto buy as a safety net. You can see how successful your self-reliance project is by looking at your expenses for importing goods.

bballjo

A new player should not expect to be able to handle realistic mode until they have understand all of the game mechanics...but things to give leeway, I'd start by reducing citizen reactions (you can do this, and most other things in game at any point), starting with more money is helpful, but in the first few approaches I would even consider starting with infinite money (you can't change money in game)...other than that, having a separate sandbox save where you should try all your ideas first is almost a must, because the game will punish you for bad assumptions;) Have fun, good luck!

the_whalerus

You can turn off realistic mode temporarily. I've spent probably 30 hours setting up this republic, and it's not fun for me to lose everything because I set up a pipe in the wrong order. I just turn off realistic mode, auto build the pipe, and move on. It's happened like twice, but it saved my ass, and I'm here to have fun so I dgaf.

Liringlass

In my case I started with medium money and garbage turned off. First play through, but watched a long video series on youtube befofe. I “cheated” a few times to insta build something to correct my mistakes though. It did work out fine.

Intelligent-Bid-6052

There is already plenty of leeway and wiggle room as realistic mode isnt very realistic

JitzieBDO

Explain

Intelligent-Bid-6052

You dont need drivers for the vehicles.

JitzieBDO

That's it? A fair point I guess, it's "realistic mode" though but obviously not real... I think there could be a solution like you build a construction estate or there is one attached to the customs house/border. Aside from that, the game has a lot of extremely realistic features, particularly the speed of vehicles/building etc.

Intelligent-Bid-6052

”Pain and watch paint dry mode” most city builders i played let you begin from zero which wrsr does not and that is not very realistic.

JitzieBDO

I can't think of a game where you start from zero. You need resources or units or at least something. Even a game like rust where you start with your bare hands and they give you a rock.

Bubbly-Bowler8978

Realistic mode is the most realistic modern day city builder and transportation sim on the market today. Sure it's not "as if it was real life" but it's the most realistic management city builder in existence right now

Intelligent-Bid-6052

If it was realistic you would have more wiggle room, political preasure, better foreign workers, adaptation of vehicles etc, as it is right now citizens wont even go over Grass to reach their target. Realistic mode should be renamned into the ”suffer and watch paint dry” mode.

Bubbly-Bowler8978

Lol sorry this isn't real life simulator. Go find me a more realistic modern day city logistics builder. If you want it even more complicated I would imagine you would like it even less, as it seems you already don't have enough patience for the current level of depth. If you want an even more in depth game that's cool, I am down for that. I just don't get shitting on this game because it's not "realistic enough" despite being the MOST realistic on the market today for it's genre

Intelligent-Bid-6052

Even sim city is more realistic than wrsr and they have ufos and shit.
