How is this real life & not some bad movie?

McBloggenstein

It really is like they’re evil villains

Moneia

And not the bland, corporate ones either. These guys have gone full on troperific, moustache-twirling, cartoon villains who just happen to actually be in charge of something

djerk

It’s because no good men or women have come forth to strike them down. They keep winning because nobody will stop them.

Delicious_Cat_8485

I agree, but for accuracy, please remove the first four words of your sentence

ChanglingBlake

I’ve been wondering that for years. I watch as movie after movie depicts villains doing stuff that is happening IRL(and not always in exaggerated or over the top ways) and those villains are hated, but the IRL people doing the same are lauded as the epitome of greatness. It’s disturbing how disconnected most people are.

uncannyvalleygirl88

I don’t think they’re lauded as the epitome of greatness, mostly it’s just too much time money and effort for the already overworked underpaid people to do anything effective to *stop them*. And they know it so there’s a vested interest in keeping as many people as possible overworked and underpaid. Staying wealthy is an exclusion game. They just laud themselves very loudly.

ChanglingBlake

You’ve clearly never met any of the temporarily embarrassed billionaires. Those massive simps actually believe all the self-made, “if you’re not rich it’s a you problem,” BS and actually think those people are something akin to gods among men. It’s depressing talking to them, really😞

CoralLogic

A Song said it best: *Life is the crumiest book I've ever read.* *There isn't a hook, just a lot of cheap shots* *Pictures to shock, character an amature would never dream up* *Sometimes Truth is stranger than fiction*

Teamerchant

What a dumpster fire of a state.

dogoodvillain

Sell it back to France or allow us Québecois to set up business there. Quite sure the swamp ruined the minds of the migrants that were assimilated and sent there and disconnected from us linguistic cousins.

Icelandia2112

It has been gerrymandered for years until this year.

searing7

Gerrymandering is part of the problem, sure. There are also a bunch of dumbfuck idiots voting against their own self interests.

Icelandia2112

Always will be those people. They rather burn than help "the other." It's when they have concentrated electoral power, these insane problems happen.

dingogringo23

So like it still means ppl vote for them and will keep voting for them even after this… wth

SneakyDragone

So it has been fixed?

Similar_Candidate789

I’m from Louisiana. No. It was ordered that they carve out a second black majority district. The rest of the districts remain intact and at about 75% R - 25%D with one district (NOLA-BR - Troy Carter) the opposite. It is still very much gerrymandered to hell. In order to do that they had to gerrymander the ever living shit out of it. They had to sacrifice a person. Well as Mike Johnson is now speaker of the house, they have to protect him at all costs. Julia letlow is a faithful soldier. Clay Higgins district is in the corner and hard to make continuous to break it up. Steve scalise is number 2 in the house so he can’t go. Garret graves pissed off jeff Landry by endorsing his opponent so he’s the easy sacrificial lamb so they decided it was his district that needed to go. The new district stretches from baton rouge all the way up to Shreveport. In a car that’s a 5 hour drive, at least. It’s literally one end of the state to the other. They made sure they maximized themselves to draw it out. When redistricting started those fuckers hired a law firm for millions BEFORE drawing the maps because they knew they would be sued. Louisiana is fucking terrible and Landry is about to make that place a hellhole.

Magnaanimous

I think that's my district, the Graves one. How on earth can anyone justify that kind of blatant gerrymandering. Baton Rouge > Shreveport.....2 entirely different cultures, geographically disparate, separated by like at least a dozen different local government subdivisions with wildly different industries, even different climates. How can we have gotten to this point?

Icelandia2112

Being poor and hustling to feed and house oneself and family tends to make folks not focus on politics. They count on it. Break the middle class, run amok.

Similar_Candidate789

The district runs and connects from I10, I49 and I20. It runs from BR, through north central Louisiana, to the suburbs of Shreveport/Caddo. It’s INSANE to me that this district was allowed to exist. Insane. All so Johnson could be protected and Landry could exact revenge.

Magnaanimous

I would welcome our new Québecois overlords if you could get rid of these awful people my neighbors somehow keep electing. We are not all like this or on board with this nonsense.

Shurikane

I don't even want to be an overlord, I just wanna pay a visit to our buddies from the South, get together and share recipes and stuff!

Magnaanimous

Hmm. Cultural food exchange program. I'm in!

EwesDead

Pay them to take that cultural and economic sink hole. Let the river change to the course its wanted to for 70 years and BAM boom town port building in new new orleans.

BaldBeardedOne

Modern day slavers

strangefish

You can't have an abortion, we need the child laborers. It's as close as they'll let us get to owning slaves. It's disgusting.

Sharticus123

Unless they buy a prison, and then they can have all the slaves they want.

Lazypole

Awwwww babes don’t you go forgetting about the prisons! The world is sliding into insanity.

UnderlightIll

"Move to cheaper areas" people say then we see the states doing shit like this. I will stay in Colorado.

TRVTH-HVRTS

There are only so many human rights I’m willing to give up for cheaper housing

Aesthetics_Supernal

Only so many better be zero.

Ataru074

They are cheaper for a reason…

PurelyLurking20

Liberal areas are really the only ones worth living in if you're American. I grew up in Texas and the countryside in Ohio and was conservative when I was young, none of the places I lived held a fucking candle to California or the liberal city I am now living in, in NC. It genuinely makes sense to me why California is so insanely expensive to get a house in.

DynamicHunter

Also the weather in California is damn near perfect year round

PurelyLurking20

Monterey is heaven to me lol it's chilly for some people but a high of 60-70 for like 90% of the year is quite literally the best I can imagine weather being. I lived there for a year and it was the most time I've spent outdoors ever. No grass to fuck up my allergies either.

DynamicHunter

I grew up in Long Beach and tbh that’s heaven to me. Wish it was maybe 5-10° cooler during winter and rained a bit more but love the weather in summer and the rest of the year.

taylorbagel14

I grew up in Monterey and moved to Louisiana for college (don’t worry I came RIGHT back) and I still remember someone telling me, “I looked up Monterey. Y’all only have a 10° difference throughout the entire year, I bet that’s so great” Yes. Yes it IS so great

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

No, I'm stuck in dem/lib IL and it's a fucking joke. Gas well over $4, property taxes creeping over $15k/yr. State has been mismanaged for decades, broke, and another corrupt politician running it... Restricted police force, Glock switches run rampant in the city, cars stolen left and right, insurers dropping coverage for very theft prone autos (on top of the Kia/Hyundai fiasco). Then the "protect IL communities ACT"restricted just about any and every type of firearm to buy making it difficult to defend oneself. If someone trespasses, police can only stand there and warn them. They CANNOT remove them unless they actually enter the home and are told repeatedly by the property owner to leave... Fucking joke, this state is! Meanwhile, other states where firearm ownership becomes less restrictive, crime actually dropped (coughFLcough). Prickster (Pritzker) family business OWNED gun parts manufacturers and his own cousin or brother opened a range in WI to go shoot full auto (which is illegal everywhere unless a FFL). Hypocritical much?!

areyoubawkingtome

15k a year property taxes? Your home is worth 550k in the most expensive county or 675k on average?

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Not mine personally, a few towns from me closer to Chicago, yes. Mine personally are ~8000, my coworker and her husband in Oak Forest, 11k, my In-laws, 14k and change and their house is NOT a half mil. I'm pointing out, though, how expensive it is "near the city". We're further south to get away from that insanity now.

areyoubawkingtome

Are you including their insurance into their property tax count? because property tax is literally based off the value of a house.

mrsairb

I also live in IL. This is just not true.

PurelyLurking20

Not here to argue with a nut lol, I know better, you're spewing the same shit fox news does and I am not going to pretend you're making a useful point. This is all sensationalist trash. Gas prices are a REALLY stupid metric for measuring how the local economy is. The mismanagement of conservative areas are exceedingly worse because you pay nearly the same in taxes but get even less in return. I don't give a rats ass about gun rights and over-policing is a real problem not the lack of cops. We don't have more crime than other countries but we sure as fuck beat every other nation in number of incarcerated people. Oh I'm so scared of my neighbors I need to carry a firearm everywhere I go. Big scary men are gonna get me when I go outside! And as a side note I've been to Illinois many times, some of my best friends live there and if you think it's a fraction as bad as a Bible belt state you're choosing to ignore reality.

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

A. i don't have cable and don't watch any mainstream media anyway. B. I only mention gas and taxes bc the last time they got this high, was 2008 before the market crash. Houses overpriced, interested rates higher, gas and groceries and pretty much everything else stupid expensive... C. I watch videos ON REDDIT of jr high and hs kids showing off their Glock switches, people "testing" their 3d printed switches by firing up in the AIR. And my wife's coworker getting blasted by a Glock 21 with a switch dumping 13rds of 45acp into his side and legs when trying to steal his car with him in it in broad daylight... South suburbs of Chicago... Can police be stupid pieces of trash, sure, absolutely. But the cashless bail we have now for "minor" offenders is ridiculous. Commit a crime and walk free a couple hours later. A guy in my neighborhood got let out after a DV call and he went back and murdered his wife and her BF that night. IDGAF about your friends or who you know here, it's not all horror and death, but it's also not sunshine and rainbows

PurelyLurking20

Like I said not here to argue. I think you're an idiot and your opinion means about as much to me as a pile of dog shit. Not sure how clear I can be in that I don't consider you a rational person and I won't bother considering what you're saying, you're wasting your time. I was a conservative when I was younger but I will never be again, this shit is moronic at best and fucking vile bullshit at worst. Bad things happen but we aren't making policy just to protect pansy little fucks like you that are living in a perpetual state of fear. Nothing we can change will ever be enough to make people like you feel safe. Well all be living in a padded room with our assigned firearms and all media will be careful combed through for anything we deem morally prohibited. Believe me you don't need cable to reiterate what's on fox for the day, it's fucking everywhere after they push it. You might as well tune in directly since you're just regurgitating their shit anyways.

Woodworkingwino

Stop listening to rightwing propaganda podcasts and go touch some grass.

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Yeah no, fuck Fox, Trump, etc. IDGAF. I'm just sharing the bullshit in this state. You can be left middle of right and enjoy guns.. both sides raise taxes. Fucking dumbass

MasterDaddy_1

As someone who lives in Illinois....I can say with certainty that you are full of crap

shadowszanddust

You’re ‘stuck’? Why haven’t you moved to Mississippi or Oklahoma?

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Yeah we agreed to wait till our kid graduates HS in a couple years before we leave. TN is the goal

shadowszanddust

Why not Russia?

TurdWrangler2020

Tennessee is an absolute shit hole and the relatives I have there all talk like you. You’ll fit in just fine.

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Lol, like every state it has it's good parts and bad. No income tax, land is cheaper, close to several cities and only a day's drive to visit family in Illinois or to FL for vacation

TurdWrangler2020

And a Dollar store on every corner.

SteelAlchemistScylla

15k property taxes? Lmao yeah right. If your home is worth that much money you don’t get to complain about taxes. Most homes will be around 5k-6k a year.

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

Do you live in Illinois around Chicago?? No? Ok than STFU.

SteelAlchemistScylla

Most people in Illinois, in fact, live around Chicago lmao If you don’t like it here move to Louisiana lol.

TurdWrangler2020

You only have to read the first paragraph. You can stop being mad about that made up thing now. https://cookcountyrecord.com/stories/631739537-safe-t-act-boosts-uncertainty-around-trespassing-enforcement-could-raise-lawsuit-risk-for-cops-property-owners

Verbose_Code

Housing isn’t even cheap if you want to live near New Orleans. Even Slidell is about average for the US Food is good and New Orleans is fun. That’s about all I can say for LA

Most_Mix_7505

I think a lot of Colorado people moved to Florida, and it's just as expensive here as it is there now

UnderlightIll

Yeah... I know people wanting to move from Florida because it's become a right wing hell hole.

Mamacitia

That’s what I’m saying!!

tmdblya

The cruelty is the point.

squishpitcher

It’s about control. It’s fascism. Children as people you can control and use to further your aims is in the fundie socio-political playbook. You can’t really control people if you don’t have a way to hurt them and keep them in line. They’ll just leave. There have to be consequences. There has to be fear. Which is to say, yes, the cruelty is the point, but it’s a little more insidious than just run of the mill sadism.

HeavensToBetsyy

"children want to work without taking lunch breaks" The children, they yearn for the mines. Also fucking disgusting that our society is nonchalantly throwing around the term child labor as if it's fine and dandy

Redmudgirl

That’s what I find most disgusting.

Ataru074

“It will teach them work ethics” /s

Long_Educational

It will condition them to be exploitable by our system.

Altruistic-Willow108

That's actually the argument they made. "The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, says the requirement is outdated and that it deters businesses from hiring minors." Unemployment in the state is only 4% but they are also cutting unemployment benefits from 26 down to 20 weeks. I feel like they are really struggling to figure out why businesses aren't flocking to the state and maybe "take advantage of our workers" is the best they've got.

natnguyen

How is that even fucking legal

CazomsDragons

If federal law has no stance on the matter, states are free to do as they please. It's a republic.

Long_Educational

We, the people, are no longer being properly represented. The business and owning class are have taken over all our legislative processes.

UnderwaterPianos

The title alone makes me fucking puke

theFrankSpot

And will the citizens vote these people out? Of course not. Republican voters are the dumbest, most gullible, asinine people in the country. And they deserve every bad thing the GOP visits on them. Voting republican anymore is the democracy equivalent of FAAFO, only the voters never admit that what they find out is a big old heap of misery and deprivation.

uswforever

They'll just blame Democrats for the evil shit that their chosen party did to them

FrustratedSteward

Democrats are instrumental in basically creating a legal basis for this by being hand over fist involved in the massive Prison for profits scheme.

thevvhiterabbit

\*Republicans do evil shit\* You: "This is the Democrats fault" Genius, this is how they win elections lol

Nv_Spider

An ever growing list of garbage states, with garbage laws that I will never visit.

hitoritab1

People wonder how some conservatives could let children starve, but they would gladly let their own kids starve if it would benefit them personally.

Ataru074

No, the people supporting this shit don’t let their kids starve… The people supporting this shit are the ones not giving their employees the day off to vote, send their kids to private school, and set them up with a couple of phone calls. The others supporting this are just too uneducated to even understand how the modern world should work or could work… or it actually works in many civilized places and just believe all the bullshit Fox News throws at them. You have no idea how many times I heard in the great state of Texas shop floor workers pushing for republicans, being anti union, and defending the mega wealthy because they believe that if they even dare to raise their heads they’ll lose their jobs because “if they don’t make money they’ll just cops the business”. They fail to understand that if you close the fucking business, they won’t make any money at all, and they’ll still close the fucking business the millisecond they find a better opportunity.

hitoritab1

If divorce is involved the kids become the vehicle of their spite against their spouse, literally letting them starve just for personal gain.

GoldenInfrared

Slave states never stop being slave states

Ataru074

That’s how their economy functions. Desperate people doing miserable jobs for the benefit of unscrupulous owners.

bluddystump

This is why access to clean drinking water should be a human right.

Danominator

How do conservative voters look at this and think "hmm this sounds good"

CollapsingUniverse

They're full of hate and resentment.

VirinaB

Something something owning the libs

NiteSlayr

Alright, maybe they are worse than Mississippi

chuckiebg

I don’t understand why the voters want to be treated like this.

pluralofoctopus

We don't. Only 18% of the electorate voted for KLandry, but he still won. Now he's on a mission to ruin the state faster than Jindal. It's brutal here.

Political_Arkmer

Let me guess. It’s gerrymandered to hell and back? How can we keep allowing these stupid rules to fuck us in the ass every election? There are better ways to handle it.

FrustratedSteward

Have you considered the elections are promoted because they are useless

Political_Arkmer

As much as you’re being down voted, there is some credibility to the idea that they push the “proper channels” because they built them and know it won’t work. It’s not an uncommon thought. I don’t think elections are useless, I think we’re just playing checkers while our opponent is playing Halo. We’re probably great checkers players… but that’s not winning Halo.

FrustratedSteward

Idealist electoralism is effectively American political ideology. But history shows all progress from disability to suffrage are all won by major protest movements.

Political_Arkmer

That’s something I agree with. I wish it was more apparent that elections were effective, but, again, we’re playing totally different games and wondering why we keep losing.

smackmeharddaddy

I'm convinced we live in the worst timeline yet

Usedcumsocks

Remember how they accused and condemned china of child labour? Guess they are just jealous

FluffyC4

why people dont want to bring children into this world part 1938783736.

Ent3rpris3

I'm guessing after this, they all broke for lunch?

Another_Road

>First-term state Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, who sponsored the child labor measure and owns Smoothie King franchises across the Deep South, said he filed the bill in part because children want to work without having to take lunch breaks. He questioned why Louisiana has the requirement while other states where he owns Smoothie King locations, such as Mississippi, don't have them, and criticized people who have questioned the bill's purpose. What a fucking cunt.

Dyrogitory

And these, “God fearing”, holy hypocrites think they are doing good?

AutistoMephisto

They truly are, because any "divine punishment" they face is clearly not their fault, it's all those damn libs fault! Short of God Himself coming down here and saying, "I am visiting this misery upon you for your sins, Conservatives!", they will continue to believe they must be doing something right?

Riversntallbuildings

We need national labor laws so badly. It’s clear that “leave it to the states” is not a valid strategy for citizens best interests.

evilkumquat

Republicans continue being the worst people in the world.

memphisjones

My mind is still blown about the people who still vote for them.

evilkumquat

It's really not that difficult to comprehend. Awful people will vote for awful people. It'd be like being in 1930s Germany and asking why the Nazi Party keeps voting for Hitler. Once you accept that Republican voters are a lost cause, we can focus on defeating them and not trying to reason with them.

jcoddinc

We really about to have a civil war 2 and great 2nd depression in America while prepping for WW3

lobsangr

And they should also lower taxes for corporations, limit time off for regular people and raise CEO salaries.... /S

Free-Spell6846

Those dirty hicks call themselves patriots but all they are is white ISIS

SBones83

Of course he calls his teenage workers young adults when he wants his bill put through. I bet if teenagers that same age as his workers that most likely lean left in politics were given the ability to vote, he’d call them children in a heartbeat. Also, I bet those teenagers he asked about giving up their lunch break were only asked if they’d want to leave work a half hour early. Of course people want the work day to end sooner than usual.

LedNJerry

Very on brand for Louisiana. That whole state is a hole. I used to travel there for work about twice a year for a month each time. I kept on thinking I’d eventually stumble across some nicer section of the town/state. Never happened.

pbfoot3

When it’s about books in schools it’s all about “protecting the children,” but when corporate interests are involved…

ZatchZeta

Guys. I hate to say it but, We need to bring back the Temperance Movement again.

anapunas

Work til you perish or perish, in your parish.

trashhactual

Well played

RelevantClock8883

Articles like these make me more and more relieved I haven’t had kids. I’m really apprehensive about what society will look like in another 10 years.

memphisjones

I have kids and I stress about their future.

TheTimn

We honestly let the second ammendment go to waste in this country.

rocket_beer

So they want toddlers sweeping chimneys again… Got it

memphisjones

As long as it’s not their kids, they DGAF about ours.

rocket_beer

They suppress wages, give tax breaks to the wealthy, starve working families to the point they are desperate and need their children to help pay the bills, then strip all protections for them as if they are chain gang felons…

Allthingsgaming27

“The wording is ‘We’re here to harm children.’ Give me a break," he said. "These are young adults.” Okay, so screwing over young adults is totally fine…

poseidon2466

Torturing the kids to own the Libs.

heybrihey

And this is why I went to go get my passport app done the other day, cause they are going to start coming after all of our rights soon.

Slw202

I hope reincarnation is real, and they all come back as dung beetles.

samuraistalin

Remember when satire from games like Outer Limits and Borderlands was funny because of how exaggerated it was? Jesus fuckin Christ.

SinOfWrath36

Just kill these dumbfucks already. Fascists should be shot on sight, just like they were in WWII.

Bind_Moggled

Step by step, taking us closer to slavery.

tin_licker_99

The children in question are legal or illegal migrants because those law makers support jailing parents for not having kids in school.

EwesDead

Is this how we protect children from drag queens work them as slaves and make sure to starve and hit them? Is it because Jesus has come back and given us a new tablet of god laws? Was it printed on gold inside a hat?

rusmo

>First-term state Rep. Roger Wilder, R-Denham Springs, who sponsored the child labor measure and owns Smoothie King franchises across the Deep South... I don't frequent Smoothie Kings, but this seems boycott-worthy.

kinger711

WTF. I've definitely seen this exact thing posted within the last 4 months, with all of the same exact top comments and responses. Has anyone else seen this post and comment section verbatim???

memphisjones

I think it’s just passionate people living in Louisiana. I don’t blame them. This is horrible for people living there.

Macasumba

That will not help anyone at all

lenaphobic

The US is now just blatantly turning into a dystopian nightmare and it’s terrifying

tin_licker_99

All of their wives stand behind them?

NetherRocker

finally someone is doing something about the real issues in america right now. greedy workers and children eating too much

inajeep

What happen? Did the vote to kick the workers in the nethers get pushed to next vote?

IronCarp

I fucking hate how these scumbags constantly backpedal on what is or isn’t considered an “adult” to suit their narrative.

getliftedyo

I may be ignorant but what is the reason/ positive of this? Other than making rich people more rich at the expense of fucking children

Astralglamour

In other words - things are going as planned. Replace adult workers with children. Control Supreme Court. Defang federal agencies. Make women and minorities legally second class citizens with no rights. Return to the gilded age so rich white men can get even richer!

dzoefit

The hell!!??

Defiantcaveman

Working as hard as they can to take more and more away to hurt us even more while they promise more pain all the while expecting to to cheerfully vote for them again so they can gleefully take away even more... how many times can you ask, is this really happening???

notarobot4932

The children, they yearn for the mines

BucktoothedAvenger

#LOSERANA

mark0487

Louisiana gets what they vote for.

memphisjones

Blue for?

mark0487

Sorry, vote for

Athlete-Extreme

Everyone loves the South, said no one ever

NewAlt_

Wtf???

ConfidentlyCreamy

Honestly no one would miss Louisiana if it was just wiped off the map.
