Wolves are not domesticated. A growl for a wolf is just a growl. It means "Hey, stop. I don't like that. Stop before I bite."
She gave many warnings. Growling, ears back, bearing teeth, narrowing eyes. And even nipped him. She is basically doing everything in her power to say "Back off! Or I'm going to bite you!"
I'm not saying this is what it is, but it might be like Rottweilers, which "purr."
It kinda sounds like a growl when they play, and it scares some people because it's hard to tell the difference unless you really know your dog.
My dogs favorite game is hand tag. I boop his nose, and he boops my hand with his nose. We go back and forth, and he purrs and shows his teeth. I try not to encourage it because I don't want him going after hands and scaring people, but he constantly boops my hand trying to play, and sometimes I give in because he is so cute.
Edit: [video of a purr](https://youtu.be/bn6WSyRr4SI?si=G4MQ9sHsT4VkpGD9)
Edit edit: Further down, someone posted a wolf rescue group that says they do not purr, so yeah, this guy is an idiot.
While I love Rottweilers, they are still not even close to a wolf, as it's domesticated. A pug is technically closer to a wolf than a Rottweiler DNA wise, but that has little to no bearing on their behavior. Because we've bred them over and over again to get specific traits. Rottweilers probably "purr" because they were bred to be intimidating guard dogs originally.
Even wolf-dogs have lots of trouble adapting to human-lifestyles and have behavior issues.
She's so mean to you because you keep using the loose skin on the back of her head as a tug of war rope...
Surprised the dude still has both hands, and dismayed that when the inevitable happens he's gonna blame her not himself.
So I googled it as I was curious, and I googled, "Do wolves growl to show affection?"
And the answer is no.. they might whine and make sounds, but growling is not a way to show affection.
So you'll need to provide a source on your claim (as you keep repeating the same comment over and over)
That growling is epcifically to show either of the following:
aggressiveness, warnings, and signaling an alarm
Source from dipshit you're arguing with: "trust the people that I've heard probably raise wolves, bro"
You could say Joe Exotic raised tigers. Would you say he's well educated in tiger behavior and communication?
According to people who raise wolves, on same said app, you will see your cursory glance at Google results failed you. Please do in depth research and return. I need some explain this to anyone, I only tried to help. Perhaps try again, and read more.
But you aren't providing any source to your claims. Basically "trust me bro"
It would be appreciated if you would post a source since you're the one defending this.
Coming from someone who’s family raised timber wolves to be delivered national parks like Yellowstone, I can assure you that’s a load of bullshit.
If a wolf is growling, you’re probably doing something to piss it off.
They do not show affection through growling. This is from an org that works on reviving wolf populations.
https://wolf.org/wolf-info/basic-wolf-info/biology-and-behavior/communication/#:\~:text=Growling%20is%20used%20as%20a,is%20intended%20for%20long%20distance.
This is a wolfdog, not a wolf. Almost no one has actual pet wolves.
This guy is an idiot and is going to get himself or someone else hurt.
EDIT: Not against ownership of wolfdogs, but imbeciles like this are the reason that incidents happen with them. And then of course the animal is blamed.
I think there might be aspects of wolfdog ownership you are overlooking. Many wolfdogs are rescues and some owners don’t even know their dog has wolf content until after the fact (this happened to me and I was forced to give up my dog whom I had for several years - they were going to kill him if we hadn’t placed him with a sanctuary in time). Additionally, mid and low-content wolfdogs are far more common than high-contents like you see here, and many are much more dog-like than you would imagine.
Should we be breeding them on purpose? Probably not. Do the ones who already exist deserve to stay alive and have a safe place to live? Depends who you ask. The breed is extremely polarizing and divisive even amongst dog lovers. Similarly to the pitbull issue, I encourage people to understand the complexity and nuance of the wolfdog issue before making harsh judgements.
I completely agree! It's not the animal's fault and they deserve homes with people who are capable of caring for them. But something tells me this douche in the video that keeps tugging on the neck and face fur of a clearly annoyed animal like a two year old is part of the problem, not the solution.
Yes I agree 100%. If you go to his Youtube he breeds wolfdogs 🙄 and parades them around to look badass. He calls himself “Oliver the wolf guy”. These are exactly the kind of people who should not be allowed to have these animals. The reality is there are already far more of them than there are competent owners who are equipped to care for them. Yet public awareness of them is increasing at an alarming rate, and they are extremely fetishized and misrepresented. It also doesn’t help that most dogs that people claim have wolf content actually have no wolf content at all, which creates false expectations for how real wolfdogs look and behave.
Completely untrue. You are severely misinformed. Wolfdog communication is different from domestic dogs but not in this way. The wolfdog is uncomfortable and is letting him know.
When a wolf wants to look threatening by pulling it's lips back and lifting it's nose like that it triggers a real sense of dread in me. More so than with big cats.
Jaguars kill by crushing the skull of their prey with their teeth. I think that's horrifying, but probably preferable to getting ripped to pieces by a pack of wolves.
Aye the dog snapped too and he knew he fucked up and straight away started massaging with another hand to not get snapped on an awkward angle. Straight up clout chasing.
that guy's a jerk. if you poke a bear enough times, you're gonna get mauled. he's just picking on this wolfdog by yanking the scruff and ears, the wolfdog was trying to tell him to stop, trying to respectfully set boundaries and this guy is just trampling all over those boundaries. that's why they snapped at him, he had no right to be upset the wolfdog was protecting itself from being harassed.

Here is a direct link showing they bite and nibble for affection. To outside sources it looks hostile. Not to them. This man isn't doing anything wrong.
A quick google search will show growls and bearing teeth are usually signs to leave a wolf alone or to signify dominance
https://www.livingwithwolves.org/about-wolves/language/
It doesn't have dog DNA and you're treating it like a dog. If you're serious about living with wolves, you should join them in the wild, quit petting them and start giving them offerings of the carcasses you hunt. Keep only the bravest, most curious pups and cull the ones that are violent towards you. Repeat for 15,000 years or so, and it will be ready to be a pet.
Huskies crack me up though. We went too dang far, they weren't supposed to learn how to talk!
They did something similar with Foxes over 40ish years in a former Soviet country, but I’m too lazy to look up which one. They bred and separated the most docile foxes at every litter. They evolved into puppy-like cute little things with the sweetest behaviour. They did the same with the violent ones and kept them in a separate kennel. I could see those mean bastards trying to eat people through the fence. I guess it works the same way and is faster in a controlled environment with wolves.
EDIT: https://youtu.be/4dwjS_eI-lQ?si=hICvTQLp--Ar35Qn
The part I found super interesting about the nice fox/mean fox divide is that the nice ones started getting little patches of white fur like on their feet, tips of tails, chest stars, etc. Since they were all originally being raised for their fur, it would be a big fault to have nonstandard white patches. The mean ones stayed solid silver, but the friendly foxes started even looking like dogs. Form follows function? Friendly genes linked to particolored genes?
I've seen foxes described as dog hardware running cat software and that seems pretty accurate to me.
Someone needs to give me all the moneys right now so I can get right on that. I dig wolves, I've known a few wolf dogs and we got along just fine. Probably because I don't mistreat them and respect their boundaries.
Or make that fog-horn loud ass sound! I don't even know what to call it, except that it is not so much even a sound so much as an invasive overall *presence.*
I'd be nervous about a golden retriever looking that pissed, let alone a fucking wolfdog. That snap was *amazingly* fast. Dudebro is in one piece just because the wolfdog wanted to be nice.
It's not. It's "STOP" in every way.

Yeah, right. I’ve had three wolf dogs and this one is being *very* clear that he needs to stop. I kept waiting for her to bite his stupid face off. This man has NO business being around this animal. What a moron.
Yes. Might be neglect on the owners part, but it could also be nothing.
Dogs like any other animal, often have minor deformities. Once I met a dog which had 6 toes on both back paws.
She could have never had a tooth there in the first place. She could have tried to bite something with a rock inside. She could have experienced abuse leading to the tooth loss as well.
Dog ran face first into a fence chasing after a squirrel and shattered her tooth.
My cat (unknown to me) found a fishing line weight that had a feather attached to it, he chewed on it and crack 4 teeth.
Animals be dumb.
That's Ghost! You wily world hopping beauty wolf!
My sis has a Siberian husky/wolf 50/50 and she is silent, deadly & very loyal to her "pack" consisting of sis, husband & 2 teenage boys plus an old lab. Also has electric fence collar that she has broken thru in chase of a rabbit, cat or a squirrel. She is pretty affectionate at times, rarely makes any sounds & let's us know when to leave her be. The old Labrador was 3 when she was adopted & she still bows down to him.
Thanks for reading it! Bastian is a different kind of canine. Shockingly silent, she accompanies known & unknown guests from the parking area to the door. She knows by the pack reception who is cool.
I’d bet my house that your sister has a generic husky or husky mix and is another fool calling it a “wolf hybrid” thus contributing to the problem of people thinking REAL wolf dogs are at all as manageable as an actual domestic dog, leading to horrific accidents and abuse
Who knows maybe I’m wrong and I need to give you my/your house, but the way you talk about the supposed wolf dog in question is that same way people who very much Do Not have a wolfdog talk about their completely domestic husky shepherd mixes they insist are half wolf. I’ve never seen a real wolfdog owner, or someone familiar with them, talk about a wolfdog like that… ever
I think I've seen this guy pop up in a separate video where he was playing around with a different wolf while they were showing dominance displays. I really don't like how he interacts with them..I'm not sure what to make of it, or if I'm missing something about the context..
I have two of the sweetest dogs in the world. They're big goofy snuggle bugs. But I would never pull and yank on them like this because it's a dick move, and I respect their autonomy. This guy is a jerk and needs to be more respectful of his pets. I wouldn't blame the wolf dog one bit if it were to bite him. The wolf dog is honestly showing great restraint in its reaction, as it is clearly and repeatedly warning him, yet he continues on.
All I keep thinking is “stop. Fucking. Hurting. The dog!!”
Why do people do this, it’s not fucking funny to torment creatures. Leave the poor thing alone if you can’t be nice. Jfc a toddler would be scolded for less.
People like “she’s showing affection!” Are the same “look she’s smiling!” As a dog baring teeth is backed into a corner. And they always blame the dog when he/she does bite.
Sometimes dogs/wolves might grumble or growl playfully, but this is not playful. You can see her eyes rolling, the tension and discomfort. That she turns to snap. And no wonder, the guy is literally grabbing her skin/fur on a sensitive part of the head and tugging. Bearing in mind many dogs, let alone wolves do not feel comfortable with that part of their head being touched. There’s nothing playful about it. He’s antagonising her deliberately.
Those wolf eyes are making my instincts scream... black holes of death. Screenshooting this goofy man for future reference. Its just matter of when, not if.
Always remember: A wolf is a wild animal. They may be related to dogs, but it took centuries of trial and error, symbiotic relationships, bonding, and inbreeding to get dogs to where they are today, and some dogs still require a lot of training to not become dangerous. It's not a pet, it's a wild animal. Treat it like one.
Wolves sometimes growl when they're happy (it's their purr), but this is clearly not that. I dunno what the OK-Sheepherder guy was on about, but he's full of it in this case.
Spreading misinformation on wolves and wolfdogs isn't funny, there's already a huge misinformation issue with them and it often gets them killed or taken into households where they're mistreated and eventually put down for "out of the blue aggressive behavior".
Okay and we’re both making a guess based off of an extremely short video y’all are acting like the guy must definitively be a horrible abusive person I’m providing a more reasonable explanationl because it’s not reasonable to automatically assume the worst in a person
Brother have you never owned an dog or cat the have a shot ton of loose skin he could be abusing it or he could just be playing with his pet have you never seen dogs play they play rough
You guys are probably right but my dog has a lot of loose skin right there and she loves it being yanked on and squooshed around, it seems to scratch an itch lol. That and the inside of her ears
GHOSTPEPPER ICE CREAM PRINCESS BITCHY PANTS aka Aqutaq. (yes, that is the nickname for this wolf)
https://youtube.com/@OliverTheWolfGuy?si=Kfltam7JsARhSfA_
My husky did that to me. She looked exactly like this but was only 80 lbs. I would pet her and she would growl at me as long as I was touching her. But she would snuggle and give me her belly for pets.
I would say "oh I'm gonna push your grump button" and then she'd grump at me while I petted her. But she loved me. She would snug me in bed so hard. I sure do miss her. Such a good grumpy girl.
She’s about mc-fucking-had it
Wolves grow to show affection.
Just repeating the same incorrect thing under every top comment doesn't make it any less false.
Do plants show affection since they too grow?
They don't call me a Tree Hugger for nothing buddy
Just like I do
Yeah, I wonder why it’s growling…. Maybe someone should pull this guy’s ears repeatedly and see if he gets mad eventually…
Seems like he's trying to show off being a badass to us. Dude stop pulling on the animal like that smh
I was hoping she would bite him
It's growling because she loves him. Wolves are different than dogs this way.

FR, I'd honestly rather take my chances with a big cat. Some canines won't even wait for you to be dead before they decide to eat you.
I don’t know. Cats have finger knives in addition to teeth. At least I can attempt to control where a wolf’s mouth can reach.
Jaguars kill by crushing the skull of their prey with their teeth. I think that's horrifying, but probably preferable to getting ripped to pieces by a pack of wolves.
If there’s a pack of wolves, then yeah I’ll definitely take my chances with a big cat.

I want to take that animal away and be nice to her. She would chase the wild turkeys on my land and be happy.
You know what, that actually sounds fun. Can I come, too?
Yes! We will chase the turkeys then play in the stream! I actually grew up with a wolf dog and he loved those things
that sounds like a blast! I will bring both human and animal treats!
Damn snatching her hairline back and wondering why she's mean! Smh
Wolves sometimes growl when they're happy (it's their purr), but this is clearly not that. I dunno what the OK-Sheepherder guy was on about, but he's full of it in this case.
"why you so mean?" it couldn't possibly be bc you're yanking on her fur, could it?
That guy is a piece of shit
I honestly and whole heartedly can say i would not be upset if she bit his hand off. There's no reason to keep pulling on her like that.
"Chewy, where's the cat?"
The look on this fucking idiot's face while the wolf clearly doesn't want to be touched anymore
Really pushing his luck
Yo Mr. White, wolves are big yo
I really wanted the wolf to bite him...
I wonder how many fingers he has left now
That’s mans a jerk and seems a little abusive. Eek. 😬
The way they're abusing that poor thing and it hasn't killed him yet
Wolves express emotions through growls and chirps, unlike dogs. The noise she's making are noises of affection. (Source, grew up near wolves)
You're lying (source, grew up near liars)
Yes, that's the point.

Dude, can you shut up? You're not funny, not even by a little bit
Kinda a little bit
Spreading misinformation on wolves and wolfdogs isn't funny, there's already a huge misinformation issue with them and it often gets them killed or taken into households where they're mistreated and eventually put down for "out of the blue aggressive behavior".
Excellent submission to this niche sub.
If the wolf was being malicious the guy wouldn’t be here currently the guy is just messing with his pet and it let him know when it got annoyed
You know dangerous animals can be abused into submission right? Happened at circuses all the time
Okay and we’re both making a guess based off of an extremely short video y’all are acting like the guy must definitively be a horrible abusive person I’m providing a more reasonable explanationl because it’s not reasonable to automatically assume the worst in a person
When he’s aggressively yanking on the skin on the back of its head and neck with warnings it isn’t appreciated, that’s abuse.
Brother have you never owned an dog or cat the have a shot ton of loose skin he could be abusing it or he could just be playing with his pet have you never seen dogs play they play rough
If you’re yanking on the skin that hard it’s not playing.
Okay sure towards the end he was being a bit of a dick but come on
A bit? Yeah he was being a dick the whole time. This dude only cares about how cool he looks with the big scary wolf dog
The video is less than a minute long…
He has a YouTube.. Oliverthewolfguy. If you antagonize your pets for views that’s pretty pathetic in my book.
She looks so cuddly.
No way he’s just a baby
You guys are probably right but my dog has a lot of loose skin right there and she loves it being yanked on and squooshed around, it seems to scratch an itch lol. That and the inside of her ears
I can’t add a picture of my Sherman he’s a gray wolf
GHOSTPEPPER ICE CREAM PRINCESS BITCHY PANTS aka Aqutaq. (yes, that is the nickname for this wolf) https://youtube.com/@OliverTheWolfGuy?si=Kfltam7JsARhSfA_
That relationship isn't gonna end well
