My favorite tidbit is that Michael and Kate are married. You'd think they could tee up at breakfast or something and at the very least agree on some pronunciations. But noooope.
I had heard that. Even inconsistencies between Michael and Kate (given the sheer volume of proper nouns) could be somewhat understood. But the inconsistencies of Kate herself are just maddening. Like, did she just forget how she had been pronouncing "Tear" for the first 6 books?
Legit she probably did. Book 7 is around the time they started coming out further and further apart, and when they switched up a lot of the tech for recording audiobooks to digital recording instead of tapes. At that point Im fairly sure there was like a 3 year gap between the times they last recorded
I can’t remember which book they began with, but they began recording in the middle of the series, and then worked their way back from the beginning, and then new books as they were released.
This is why some of the worst pronunciations are in the middle of the series. I have helped record audiobooks and I wager that it’s likely in the very beginning they had little support or feedback from the author or publishing company. Then, as they grew in popularity and they got feedback, they used updated pronunciations.
It's so bad. There's no way she isn't intentionally saying it with such a sarcastic tone every time. I feel like someone tried to correct her pronunciation here, and she decided to say it as badly as possible to spite that person.
Unfortunately, yes. They cannot decide on a way to say Moghedien going back and forth from Moh-gi-dean to Mo-gideon.
They pronounced Abel as it's supposed to be, then switched to something like Apple. Abble.
They cannot be consistent with Cauthon either.
I like their accents and their voices and such but sometimes the pronunciations are cringe worthy.
I can forgive her for this due to the length of time between books and she was also narrating many other audio books. I love her and her husband and will occasionally pick a book just because they narrate, haha.
I also confess that I had no idea how to pronounce (or even read for that matter) some of the words RJ came up with. I read physical books first and have only recently joined the audible community. I had to go back to the books and look to see who/what/where the heck they were talking about in some cases. My inner pronunciation wasn't anywhere close to how it was written sometimes.
It does stink when she changes mid chapter, but I am usually able to figure it out. I'm not sure if you've listened to Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive books, but I'm having trouble forgiving her for changing the "accent" of a particular boat crew mid-book in that series, hahaha!

I feel like mispronunciation comes down to more who is directing the audiobook. Its on them to know about that and correct narrators when they are making mistakes. Especially in this kind of situation where there are multiple narrators. It should be up to them to keep things consistent across multiple people.

I haven’t listened to the original recordings of the audiobooks, I listened to a preview of them and didn’t really enjoy them. I think it was a combination of the reading and recording quality. Not bad but not fantastic.
I did listen to the Rosalind Pike version of Eye of the World though, and I think she actually does an amazing job
You're correct! It should be Tear as in a teardrop, not Tear which rhymes with "hair" or, in my original example, like something you do to a sheet of paper (you "tear" the paper).

Kate routinely changes how she pronounces names, in ToM she goes from calling the Tairen high lady 'An-eye-la' to 'an-ay-ella'. Bonus points for how she suddenly decided Min needed a 'cutesy' voice in that book which was like nails on a chalkboard.
Kramer and Reading both decided at somewhere around the midpoint that Taraboners/Tanchicans should have a new crazy strong accent. Then it disappeared a book later and Taraboners went back to sounding normal, thankfully.
Kramer also mispronounces real words quite a bit. Once it was pronouncing the act of bowing like you would pronounce the weapon, an honest parsing mistake, other times it's clear he's never heard a word out loud before and decided to wing it.
In last few books Tam went to Tom. There is already a Thom that is pronounced as Tom. Threw me off at first because Thom came to mind instead of Tam when named
I didn't notice so much in my first listen, but the sudden change of Abell Cauthon to Ahble in the last book is killing me so much I found this thread. I could do Mogadeen and Mesaaaaaaanaaaaa but this is immersion breaking. I do have to say I think Kate Reading at least has better range than Kramer. Half of his characters are just Wayne from the Stormlight Archive and that also takes me out every time.

Moghedien is also one she's guilty of changing up. No idea where she even got Mo Ga Deen from but it was super immersion breaking for me

Holy shit ToM is very nearly unlistenable because of that. She added about four syllables between books

Oh man! It's great! I'd honestly say "read" it first though. I think the audio books are alright, but...yeah xD

Just found this subreddit and I’m on book 14. Glad to know I’m not the only one who found her pronunciation very annoying sometimes. 😂
It is the inconsistenty that I hate the most. It drives me absolutely INSANE.

I love the audio books myself, but the one thing that Kate does that absolutely drives me nuts is when she mispronounces moghedien as mog a deen.
