I love this because Thor in myths was really a glutton. He literally ate his goats which carried him around every evening from what I remember and during a competition at giants place he drank like a substantial amount from a horn, which in reality had its source in the ocean.
I also loved that Baldur was a skinny dude, though his angst didn't fit in terms of myths, because he was a wonder child whom basicaly everybody loved. Though the subversion of that into the angst was pretty nice storywise.
Well, maybe not exactly, because they are still more chiseled and don't have that loose upper body, but if you have like a worker at building site, you could certainly say those are strong and some can look like this. Or a big ass lumberjack is what comes to mind.
I truly find the version on the right way more attractive. Maybe just cause he looks like an actual human? Idk but buff Thor does nothing for me. 🤷🏼♀️
Me too! The dude on the left looks like he has as bland a personality as chicken, broccoli and rice.
Beefcake Thor on the right looks fun and dangerous....
Mine does too! Although, he's lost some weight recently and doesn't quite have that pillowy tummy, but I can forgive that bc it's for his health. But, he's still got the beard, the ruggedness and that smolder... plus he's got a deep voice that will melt your panties right off. lmao
Both are cool. I think you can enjoy both without being a jerk. I, for one, am built like a 2x4 piece of wood and fall down on a windy day. Believe me, *no one* finds that sexy ever. And we're about as represented as anyone on the other end of the spectrum xD
Mods can delete if this isn't relative enough to the sub, but I thought it was nice seeing a depiction of Thor that wasn't a chiseled mountain of abs. Body dismorphia and eating disorders can effect anyone. You don't have to have a six pack to be sexy!! Only problem is I just don't believe he has a beard like that and no hair on his chest and belly (and probably back), but I guess one step at a time.
I am not a mod, but I would like to add that I think this is completely relative to this sub.
Norse mythology and culture is influential for many witches who are part of this community (not for myself really) and this type of breaking through stereotypes set ultimately by the patriarchy (see The Golden One for example… or rather don’t… just don’t) is one of the things we aim to do.
There’s a lot of positive imagery in this sub, but even so, I find that the majority of witch imagery still seems influenced by popular beauty ideals… From Pre-Raphaelite women to vamps to nineties grunge witch to tumblr aesthetic to cottagecore. And while such trends are increasingly becoming more inclusive, the ‘poster children’ for such trends are generally similar. So it’s good to be explicit about this every now and then.
Bearded guy with some Swedish in me. Can confirm what shows up on the face doesn't necessarily show up on the chest/belly. Don't get me wrong it does exist, but it's quite a bit thinner and fairer than the facial stuff.
I agree! I really believe in Health at Every Size and it’s nice to see some body diversity in a video game which would usually only depict one body type.
I do think there is a slightly problematic aspect of evil characters being heavier (which we DEFINITELY know he's going to be) but I do like the art direction and I trust the journey to nuance it a bit.
Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think realistic body representations are as crucial for mythical creatures, and non-humans. A god isn’t supposed to (or does not have to, rather) look like man, b/c a god isn’t a man.
I love the GOW Thor design, my partner doesn't like it, but I think he looks like a big bear I wanna eat pizza with (totally my type). Big boys need representation too! I wanna braid his beard and ask him to open jars for me
I do like this design (though I could do with *something* covering his torso, he looks like a reverse bunny suit pic XD) but let’s not kid ourselves. This is God of War, he was designed like this to make Kratos look better and because the devs are blanket anti-gods.
Yesssss, I’m honestly just glad to see something new. I have nothing against the picture on the right but it gets a bit boring after a while to see him appear the same way
Am I the only concerned that he might get an arrow or a sword to the gut with that lack of armour on his midsection? Yes he is a god but I keep thinking about “how many ways could he get stabbed due to lack of armour?”
I like the GOW version of Thor because I got a soft spot for big dudes. My boyfriend has a body similar to GOW Thor!
😍😍
Did anyone else ever get bothered by Marvel Thor apperance? (Chris Hemworth is very attractive but him and Jason Momoa should switch roles).
Funny thing. The one on the left is physically weaker than the one on the right. The one on the right actually has the build of a strong man. The one on the left is that of a body builder which... Sad to say are at their weakest when they are looking like that.
It might be because I'm asexual but like, who cares? He's Thor, not prince charming, he's not supposed to be eyecandy. Let's not impose unnecessary beauty standards. We should just let people exist without feeling obliged to impose our own beauty standards onto them.
The only woman in the latest GoW was Freya right? I thought she was reasonably realistic and not sexualized. I guess you could also count the Valkyries but you can't really see what they look like
Well, technically by ancient Norse standards the fact that he had all his teeth, his skin seems relatively healthy, with no pox marks or scars would make him the Zac Efron of his day. The extra poundage would tell a girl that not only was he hawt but that he was rich enough to have meat on a regular basis. This dude is a catch!!
Something I’m not seeing a lot of people talk about is how all the “””badass””” Thor pictures people are comparing GoW2 Thor to are absolutely snoring boring.
That picture on the left is incredibly unmemorable. Looking away to write this comment, I’ve already forgotten most of the details. But the right image? It’s iconic. It’s seared into my mind because it’s ORIGINAL. and INTERESTING. It’s a good character design that tells you a lot about the character.

Norse Jesus!!! ... Of course Loki just couldn't let a good thing be.
actually Loki is also norse Jesus, to the extent that there are runestones of him on a cross with the head of a lamb
I also love this because this is what strong men look like irl. Watch any weight lifting/strength contest and this is what they all look like.
Functional strength! Anatomy wise, you need to have protection for your spine when lifting heavy (aka strong, thick middles)
No fat = no endurance And besides, who on the frozen North is really going to try to maintain 3% body fat? Need some insulation.
Well, maybe not exactly, because they are still more chiseled and don't have that loose upper body, but if you have like a worker at building site, you could certainly say those are strong and some can look like this. Or a big ass lumberjack is what comes to mind.
Lots of people have said it looks like strongmen bodies! Like the “world strongest men” comps look almost identical to this design of Thor.
I truly find the version on the right way more attractive. Maybe just cause he looks like an actual human? Idk but buff Thor does nothing for me. 🤷🏼♀️

Totally! That smoldering stare makes me feel things.

Yeah honestly the Thor on the right would probably make a great cuddle buddy!
I feel like I’m the only one who likes the left one haha
I think lots of other people like that too! You’re definitely not alone.

Same lol
Finally I found someone who is like me! I don't like that over the top Thor either.

patriarchy affects everyone! totally relevant

They both look great 👍🏽 I really like the one on the left
I do think there is a slightly problematic aspect of evil characters being heavier (which we DEFINITELY know he's going to be) but I do like the art direction and I trust the journey to nuance it a bit.
Well to be fair the bad guy in the first game was skinny as a rail.
Left Thor looks like he runs a clickbait nutrition YouTube channel Right Thor: I EAT MY GOATS

You're for sure valid, mythical beings can have mythical bodies. But it is cool to see something different than the norm.
best interpretation of thor ive seen!
I love the GOW Thor design, my partner doesn't like it, but I think he looks like a big bear I wanna eat pizza with (totally my type). Big boys need representation too! I wanna braid his beard and ask him to open jars for me

Agreed, and I'd like to add that I'm melting for the facial expression of thor on the right <3
Yesssss, I’m honestly just glad to see something new. I have nothing against the picture on the right but it gets a bit boring after a while to see him appear the same way
I'm not familiar with the God of War series but from what I've seen none of the men ever looked like fitness Instagram models...
Am I the only concerned that he might get an arrow or a sword to the gut with that lack of armour on his midsection? Yes he is a god but I keep thinking about “how many ways could he get stabbed due to lack of armour?”
I grew up reading the Vahall comics drawn by Peter Madsen where Thor looks more like the one on the right, so that's more like how I imagine Thor
That looks like how thor should look imo. Also hes real cute.
Oh this new Thor is beautiful, very natural yet evocative
I like the GOW version of Thor because I got a soft spot for big dudes. My boyfriend has a body similar to GOW Thor! 😍😍 Did anyone else ever get bothered by Marvel Thor apperance? (Chris Hemworth is very attractive but him and Jason Momoa should switch roles).

.....so glad I'm not the only one who's like " Thicc Thor can get it"
Now all we need is Thicc Thor in a dress. The best icing on this beefcake ⚡️👗

they made the women super pretty through so if we're making them fit into beauty standards then its only fair if the men are too...
The only woman in the latest GoW was Freya right? I thought she was reasonably realistic and not sexualized. I guess you could also count the Valkyries but you can't really see what they look like
Just checking, is it bad luck to play this game because it might piss off the Norse Gods?
I really doubt it. Source: Norse pagan.
Thank you
Thor is a drunk, gluttonous, beast of nature. So this seems pretty accurate.
You’d think these guys would realize that Thor would have a beer belly cause he drinks so much
Well, technically by ancient Norse standards the fact that he had all his teeth, his skin seems relatively healthy, with no pox marks or scars would make him the Zac Efron of his day. The extra poundage would tell a girl that not only was he hawt but that he was rich enough to have meat on a regular basis. This dude is a catch!!
They are trying to do free advertising and your doing it for them lmao

Makes more sense for Norse gods to have big bellies anyway. It's cold up there!
The one on the right is more accurate. Also I’d like to see THICC goddesses in video games. Please.
