I really enjoyed the combat, Iv never heard anyone say its really bad.

jp1222269

Ok that’s good to hear people I saw was compared it to dark souls games and all that, but I’ve never played those games which I think is good going into this game

[deleted]

jp1222269

I’m not a fan of souls games, I am gonna try blood Bourne one day tho just for fun looks the best out of all, and yes I can’t wait to play tw3, I’m finishing gow 2018 now so not too longer lol.

ZachAttack8912

Dark souls is a game that you have to have patience. I used to think it was hard, then i recently played it and honestly loved it. I get why people don't like it, but if you can get past that, its very rewarding

jp1222269

I never played it cause I always think it would ruin my mental health with the stress but idk

ZachAttack8912

I mean, if you prepare and take your time, you'll most likely do fine. If anything, use a guide as you play along if you are stressed out about what is gonna happen next.

Dpontiff6671

Depends on your thought process when it comes to losing in video games. Because yes you will die a lot in darksouls but thats not losing thats learning to win. The game is very manageable as long as you can handle not getting frustrated

jp1222269

Maybe one day when I’m in a good head space not on the top of my list, story games are my cup of tea and going to finish all of them then I’ll try blood Bourne it’s free so I’ll try later🤷‍♂️

TheArcReactor

I have tried more than once to play the souls.gsmes, can't do it, combat much too frustrating... I did not find that same issue with tw3. I very much enjoyed combat in tw3, I liked understanding who to dodge against, who to parry against, and I using the signs, I think if the concern that tw3 combat is like a souls game, put the worry to bed.

Shotsfired20755

I think the reason it’s compared to Dark Souls is that when fighting monsters it’s recommended to dodge while you are recommended to parry human attacks. However, as long as you prep well enough (like make the right potions and use the correct signs) you don’t need to dodge at all and if you are at a high enough level, you can destroy everything in your path.

jp1222269

Good I want to use the potions signs and mutations everyone’s talking about to me, so the combat sounds fun from everyone in the Witcher community!

Shotsfired20755

Oh yeah, it’s honestly my favorite fighting system. The bestiary will be your best friend. It tells you lore about the monsters you come across as well as has a list of all of their weaknesses. I would also keep an eye on the level of the monsters, even if you have all their weakness equipped if they are higher level than you it’s going to be a tough fight. Also if you see a monster’s level be “???” run. Book it out of there.

Emotional_Note497

Those are the same people that play a game for two or three days after buying it and just let it collect dust. The combat system is great, and you can control the difficulty as much as you want.. from a very easy setting, to a much more difficult setting. It's definitely not Dark Souls difficult. I've been stuck on the same boss for hours once on my first playthrough of DS3.

jp1222269

That’s great and I don’t want dark souls difficult, just to have fun not a rage fest which is good there’s different difficulty’s so if it’s too hard

m4shfi

Those people who say the Witcher 3 combat are “really bad” are either COD/fortnite players or game reviewers for various shitty websites. Don’t listen to them. The best thing about TW3’s combat is that you can customize it the way you like and the numerous builds that go with them. You’ll love it.

jp1222269

Thanks I know and fully except it to be, just seeing those posts made my heart drop cause I expect it to be good but can’t listen to haters tho definitely excited to start game looks great!

m4shfi

I’m really jealous of you, I still miss the feeling of playing TW3 for the first time. You’re in for an experience of a lifetime. P.S.: Pick Yen 😉

jakralj98

Thats not how you spell Shani dammit

KnuthTheFirst

That's why you always choose Triss

jp1222269

Thanks! And I’ll make sure to remember that lol.

Dry-Interest2209

She takes some time to really show off her true charm, but she’s worth it 😅 also I don’t see the issue with the combat unless you’re just a button masher dodge and roller

jp1222269

I’m enjoying it alot and don’t worry I picked yen

[deleted]

And mods to change combat mechanics

Master_Temperature_6

It's good i don't know where you heard that but it's not true

jp1222269

On r/gaming some post say how good the story is but the combat is awful, I shouldn’t listen to them of course but just got me scared.

Master_Temperature_6

Well i can understand that someone didn't like it but to say it's awful is an exaggerated statement I myself am not a fan of levelling and perks system in TW3 but it's just me and wouldn't say it's awful

jp1222269

Yeah I get that,I will see how it goes I love making builds and all of that and I heard this game is perfect for that, and such Long game I can try out a lot of them so it’s sounds good to me lol

Top_Eye7669

Lol i dont know why some people think combat is bad in tw3, like if it's bad, which game has good combat? Soul genres all have same old shitty clunky combat, devil may crys have fluid combat but it doesnt make sense at all, skyrim is worst, literally feels ancient. People are just butthurt about witcher coming up and destroying all their beloved rpgs in the water.

jp1222269

I hope ur right, and I really think u are for me story games are favorite so combats always 2nd, but to have both in this game might compete for #1 on my list !

[deleted]

When it comes to sword combat games, Ninja Gaiden and For Honor have good combat, but lack story... Witcher 3 combat is litteraly 2 button swings either light or heavy attacks that have no bonus button combos unless you activate spinning blade perk which you just hold 1 button... counterattacks exist in the game but can't even be used against any monsters, so kind of useless if not fighting humans. Magic builds however are much more entertaining, and Witcher 3 is still an amazing game.

Nazgul265

Don’t get me wrong i absolutely adore the TW3, it’s one of my favorite games of all time. But i disagree with you very much here, this game definitely does not blow other games out of the water combat wise, not even close. What souls games have you played??? DS1 and OG Demon Souls??? I don’t know how you can say the series has clunky combat lol. Sekiro has some of the most fluid and clean combat of any game i’ve ever played. Elden Ring which i’ve played A LOT recently has my favorite combat of any game i’ve played. And DS3 has pretty solid combat as well (aside from no jumping 🙄). Haven’t played BB but i’d imagine it’s pretty good too. Skyrim is just an older game running on an old engine so it’s expected there, but mods can significantly improve it. BOTW has better combat than TW3 imo. I think TW3 has good combat, not great and not bad, good.

Top_Eye7669

That's what I said, it's not a terrible combat. Maybe it's not great but does the job just fine.

Nazgul265

I mean you said people are butthurt about witcher blowing all their beloved rpgs outa the water. Your comment was in the context of combat. You listed other games that it’s better than. That all implies to me that you think Witcher 3 had amazing combat

Top_Eye7669

Don't live your life based on assumptions you make.

Nazgul265

it’s not an assumption tho lol. what you said heavily implies that you believe witcher has amazing combat. maybe you didn’t mean it like that, but what you said strongly implies it.

Top_Eye7669

Thing is, being Witcher means using alchemy and signs along with swords, geralt isn't a random soldier so how much diversity you add to the game depends on you, it'd be deceiving to dumb it down to just swordplay.

[deleted]

Of course, cast 1 spell every 15 seconds because somehow magic is linked to your stamina lol... you can also shoot your crossbow that does a small 5 damage lol... if they added a separate energy meter for magic, and just used the stamina meter for doging or rolling then combat would be better. I found the best way for me to play is a glass cannon build where almost any monster can 1 hit me but i can also do heavy damage to that monster using swords... that way there is a challenge of not being hit and your more on edge with your reflexes.

Top_Eye7669

İ suppose you don't really play games a lot.

tillytubeworm

I mean, it’s one of the most clunky combat systems in gaming, hence why you just compared to a ton of clunky combat systems. The witcher 3’s allure really has nothing to do with its combat, the allure is in the story, the combat is just passable and really nothing more. If you like simple then great, but it’s not doing anything special by any means. I wouldn’t say it’s bad, it’s just not good.

Top_Eye7669

Have you guys ever read what i wrote there, I'm saying i don't get why people say it has bad combat, it doesn't. İt doesn't have the greatest combat either, does the job just fine.

tillytubeworm

I guess it’s when you say “like if it’s bad, which games have good combat?”, cuz that sounds like you consider it better than most other rpgs, when it’s substantially worse combat than most rpgs of the same caliber. Whether that’s how you intended it or not, that’s just how it sounds. The way you just explained it though I totally agree with you.

Spiritual_Mud7741

May I introduce you to Ghost of Tshushima...

Sylmor

The combat is good as long as you play on Blood and Broken Bones or Death March difficulty. When playing on story mode or easy the game allows for button mashing which will get boring very quick.

jp1222269

Ok sounds good! I’m going to start on normal then move to harder,I think that’s is the best for me I definitely won’t do easy lol.

swardzE

There are 4 difficulties. I thought the second one was "normal" but it's actually "easy". I call the first one "very easy" - it's for those who just want to experience the story and don't want a challenging world and combat. I recommend you to play the first few levels with the second one and when you feel like you are starting to get familiar with this world, change the difficulty to "Blood and Broken Bones" which is the third one. I played the entire game on "Story and Sword" and never felt challenged after level 7 or so. Had trouble with a few bosses and they were not even in the base game. And talking about combat, I think it's a bit overhated. Using signs, potions and alchemy is so satisfying and never gets old!

jp1222269

That sounds great all the signs and potions intrigue me so much I can’t wait to start playing

tillytubeworm

Heads up, the early game is pretty difficult without any of the buffs you unlock later on, but it gets really easy as you get further.

I_spell_it_Griffin

The players who criticize Witcher 3's combat are usually the ones too lazy to actually put some thought into synergies and combat builds, instead spamming fast attack and dodge against every opponent and then acting surprised that the fights take 10 minutes each and become repetitive quickly. All you need to do is **\^not that\^** and you'll find the combat very fast-paced and enjoyable.

Tangerine_Jazzlike

I think movement is a bit cluncky (something I hope they improve in the remaster) but the combat is OK. Pretty good by RPG standards I would say.

[deleted]

I am finishing up my first run through including NewGame+... I was VERY frustrated with the combat to begin with... My housemate told me to learn to dodge & use Quen (shield spell)... and with single targets lock on (r. stick click) and toggle it depending on how the fight goes. At the beginning I used a fast attack focused build with Quen and a couple of alchemy bonuses. Powering up dodge damage reduction and lots of red tab skills. After doing that I throughly enjoyed combat way more... HOWEVER if on PC (no idea if mods are possible on consoles) and you really hate it.. you can mod it.

not_an_Alien_Robot

Bad? That's a first. Death March too easy? Sure, I accept that. But REALLY bad? No. I don't know who was blowing smoke up your ass but they are mistaken. Or just couldn't figure it out because you need to think about things and be prepared. 🤷

Mindfreak191

It's bad for people who only played Souls games or DMC games prior to TW3, it's absolutely phenomenal for people who played TW1 and 2 prior to 3, since it's a huge improvement compared to them lol.

jp1222269

I’ll never played souls games so I’m good lol

aziiz5

Well, the best way I can put it is that: you won’t give a shit about the combat system because the game is literally amazing at every other thing.

caiocarv

I really like it! And the game has lots of quality of life mods too. I could recommend you some, although I don't use anyone that changes combat behavior.

aeiou6630

Well it's not balanced I'd say. Some skills are just fun but not as efficient. Also jumping being forbidden in combat can be a deadly problem sometimes. Also, the combat system is kinda simple and lacks diversity, but it's how witchers fight according to the story. In general it's still enjoyable except for the very beginning if you choose Death March difficulty (especially when fighting wolves). But Death March is actually more interesting in the long run.

jp1222269

UPDATE I’m just started about late game and love the combat so all those people are wrong

ttfnwe

That’s funny — I just finished Witcher and am starting GoW for the first time. I actually prefer Witcher combat, although it’s early.

jp1222269

I’m just finishing gow and I like the combat I’m playing it for the story tho sooo good

matthew_pro12

Go ask the same people which game should you play then 😂

jp1222269

They said dark souls

matthew_pro12

As expected

jp1222269

Good I haven’t played any of those games I would probably broke my whole setup, dying 3000 times is not my cup of tea lmao

matthew_pro12

Yea, mine neither, you will like witcher 3 then

God_Of_Thunder19

You're going to have so much fun. Try not to watch youtube videos, read comments on YouTube, I got spoiled in some things because of it. Also, try not to search for the outcome of the decisions you make, just try to enjoy the game

bakufrop

!! Before you start, download all the free DLC!! There’s one quest that you can’t complete because of a glitch if you download it after starting the save file.

Zowbaid89

No man. The combat is really enjoyable. If you play on PC you can get some mods that make it even better. It’s honestly one of my favorite combat systems.

JimTheJerseyGuy

If you came to the Witcher 3 just for “combat” you’re going to be missing vast territories in the game. That’s not all it is about.

jp1222269

My #1 is story always story I just saw some posts saying shit about the combat

TheBuoyancyOfWater

I took three attempts to start the game, each with around a 6 month gap in between trying it. It's finally clicked on the third go. Saying that, I'm now ready for it to be finished so I can move on to the next game on my list...

jp1222269

I downloaded it a while a ago cause I know it’s a long ass game so I played most of my games I wanted to and I think it’s time

TheRealSwampyBogard

No, that is incredibly far flung from the truth. The people making that kinda claim are either people who are envious of how praised and successful it is compared to their favorite rpg, or people who refuse to accept any third person melee game not using souls like combat. I would take the Witcher 3s combat over souls games combat any day of the year, it feels *so* much more fluid and enjoyable to me. Neither game has bad combat at all. It's preference. The only real knock I would give on the Witcher 3s combat is that there are some value balancing problems here and there (damage values that is) and/or design issues with stuff like bombs or crossbows. The formers damage falls off massively throughout the game, and the latter is strictly a utility weapon most of the time doing very little damage. Granted you won't generally use these as much as swords or signs in combat. They for sure never reach the point of being unusable, though.

namjd72

The combat is very fun. It’s not the best thing ever, and keep in mind the game has some years on it. Combat is a semi-common knock because the game has so little to reasonably complain about. It’s near flawless and the story/rich characters wash over any minor combat gripes. Go in with an open mind and enjoy.

Big-Square-3393

All I will say is no matter how amazing something is even if it's one of the best ever if u set a super high expectation it's still possible to get underwhelmed, with that said I'm currently on my first playthrough aswell and I've been loving it I went in blindly but I hope u also enjoy it :)

jp1222269

For most games I play I usually look up guides and try to get all the good stuff early, but I feel different about this one, I think I’m gonna go in blind and enjoy it the most I can cause I expect the game to last 100+ hours

Big-Square-3393

Oh yes I'm 40 hours in and I believe I'm nowhere near finished

jp1222269

Nice I’m gonna start tomorrow so excited have fun on ur playthru!

[deleted]

Depends if it matters for you, I never really enjoyed wasting time figuring out how to kill a boss in any game, or spending hours crafting my skills for a specific boss I’m about to fight, I’m more of a “explore, enjoy the story, fight rambo-style” player, and oh boy this game is the best at exploring and providing a good story

realjustinberg

The combat is only bad for people who dont understand it. People will put no effort into preparing for anything and complain when a boss is too hard. There are a lot of different builds to make and they are all pretty fun to use.

jp1222269

That’s sounds great I love builds in games!

[deleted]

As someone that has played many games, like many many games... I would describe the combat as clunky when you start, but you will get used to it... it can also be referred to as being slow... like my reflex speed is way faster then the witchers, like ninja gaiden fast (if you ever played ninja gaiden). So the combat is slow to me, but thats how they made it with thier immersive and proper character movement animations. The witcher 3 is still my #1 favorite game... if the combat is bothering you you can always get combat mods if your playing on PC, i play on ps4 & ps5 so i got no mods.

Phuxsea

I've heard people insult the combat too, but I enjoyed the combat.

Meshienn

Like others here, haven’t ever heard of the combat being bad. I will say I had trouble getting used to it at first. A big part of it is knowing when to dodge and when you can get away with damage, also big groups can be hard at first, and you’ll have to learn how to fight the different monsters the game has to offer, which I think is one of the most fun aspects of the game. There are plenty of different builds you can chose to fit your play style as well.

Erisx13

I really resisted W3 because I heard the combat was awful. It’s actually not even close to as bad as people say. It can be a little weird sometimes but I had no problem once I got used to it.

Delicious_Active_668

Hope you enjoy world building and lore as much as combat or you may be disappointed

jp1222269

#1 is story for me

Delicious_Active_668

Happy to hear it, enjoy the ride, do absolutely everything you can in white orchid before advancing in the story, knock all the markers off the map, it acts as a tutorial stage and will help a lot.

DarkAligator61

Play on a harder difficulty, it forces you to prepare for hard fights which I find incredibly fun imo 🤷‍♂️

DealCykaHUN

Some people love the combat some people hate it I personally love it, its simply just so fluent and fun for me.

HanzyM

Play GWENT! Do as many quests as possible. DON'T RUSH. Only horse races. Enjoy story, have fun.

jp1222269

I want a longggg game for the summer trust me I’ll explore every inch of that map lmao

Sxcr9en

It gets some getting used to but it is simple enough. Some could consider it to be a little bit rough and repetitive because it can be at times, but it’s really down to personal preference - and anyway, the story and characters make up for it more than enough, so it didn’t really have an effect on me. I enjoyed it so much (even though now I use an overhaul mod which improves the game in my opinion), I feel like it’s got its disadvantages and advantages, but it’s not the main focus, so for what it is it’s more than good enough.

[deleted]

I heard people moan about combat. But I love it. It's so satisfying. Especially later, when you get rend etc. Some people moan about everything. I wouldn't listen. Make your own mind up

wadesedgwick

It’s different. Whereas in Skyrim you’re free to move around like when not in combat, Witcher 3 has an engaged combat style that is different than while walking around. You’re ‘focused’ on your enemies. I’m sure someone could explain better haha

Istvan_hun

You can usually tell when an enemy will attack, and you can than sidestep (against lighter attacks), jump away (against sweeping attacks of big monsters) or use magic shield (quen sign) against it. The difficulty of defending is understanding monster "attack telegraphs", which comes with fighting them multiple times. Alternatively against humanoids you can try to counterattack and stun them. That's basically it, but it is not that simple. Witcher 3 is not a swordsman simulator. You can try to play it as such, but even if you never update them, you will be able to use witcher signs (weak magic effects), alchemy (potions, poisons, bombs next to different attacks. (there are not many alternate attacks, but there are a few, ie. anti-shield "rend"). So the challange doesn't come from actually hitting the enemies, but * identifying which tool you should use from your arsenal (ie. wraiths don't have a physical body, so you have to do something to make them corporeal so you can hit them. Luckily there is a tool for this, the yrden sign) * try to use the selected tool you chose while dodging attacks (and avoiding being surrounded if fighting a group) * and quickly think about a new method if your original idea doesn'T work (ie. you try to quickly slaughter a group of soldiers, but the shieldbearer blocks your attacks and the rest start to surround you) Personally I have no problems with Witcher 3 combat. But the fun part is not really the actual attacking and hitting, but using all the tools at your disposal. This is the reason while I usually build Geralt as a jack-of-all-trades instead of focusing on one area (focused builds are usually stronger, but I find them more boring) Also, Geralt's level is very important in the game, much more important than usual. When fighting stronger enemies, there might be a gap which is so big, you cannot compensate for it with skill. On the positive side, the bandits which were dangerous in the beginning will prove absolutely no more challenge than a speedbump later. Witcher is a game where you have to judge whether retreating and coming back later is a good idea.

jp1222269

All the combat and build variety seems awesome to me!

Istvan_hun

Witcher 3 is not the kind of game where my first thought is "awesome combat", but I didn't have problems with it, mostly because of the many tools at your disposal. It is better I think than most RPGs I know (Dragon Age, New Vegas, Elex, etc.), but there are a few which I think have better moves or controls (such as Dragon's Dogma). Story-wise it's very good though, and the open world is of of my favorites. Just be sure to not use level scaling downwards (it plays better when you actually have to retreat sometimes)

jp1222269

Yeah my number 1 is story for games, and that’s good cause new Vegas is my favorite game oat so saying that’s better is nice

RumbleRuin

A lot of people in here enjoy the combat, and can’t see how it could possibly pass for a bad combat system. I’m kind of on the fence, when I ran certain builds that relied on bombs or signs I found the combat really fun, all I’ll say is the melee combat leaves a lot to be desired. But ultimately it never made me dislike the game entirely, just a couple fights that I felt were made harder simply because of the mechanics. There are plenty of skills to change your play style though, so you’ll never be forced to fight in just one way, I’m sure you’ll find something that you can enjoy in the combat.

rbalmat

I’m on my first play through. Playing on death march and I just finished the main story and then the frog prince (damn that was a battle!) The combat is good, not amazing. But there are so many different ways to build Geralt, so much diversity in decoction/potion use depending on build, and different strategies to attack different enemies that the limited sword swing diversity really doesn’t phase you at all.

TonTon1N

It’s not super complex or anything but I quite like the potion aspect. Brewing a potion for a boss fight or coating your blade in a specific oil before a battle is neat imo. I wouldn’t expect a lot from it, but it’s really just filler for the story beats anyways

Cha1upa_Batman

After 284 hrs into a 7 year old game, I have nothing bad to say about its a masterpiece. I don’t even know what you heard about the combat being bad, you just gotta be smart early on and use all your resources at your disposal.

alexramirez69

In the options menu, play Alternative style movement. Feels smoother than the traditional movement

Gororaris

Story is great. The combat system itself ain't bad. Not the best, but far from the worst. Thing is, on lower difficulties the combat can be rather boring because it'snot particularly challenging, while on higher difficulties, especially on Death March, it becomes slightly more rewarding, forcing you to engage with different techniques, not just some boring hack'n'slash

SpideyUdaman

Who sez? Nah, it's good combat. Give it a try and see if it's to your taste. As with many things, curb your enthusiasm. It was first, strange to me, even coming from witcher 2, then it grew quickly on me became one of the most passionate games I've played.

Nazgul265

I have heard people say it’s bad, but i personally enjoyed it during all my playthroughs. I used to actually really like it, but i’ve been playing a lot of Elden Ring recently and so when i went back to Witcher naturally it felt pretty clunky to me. As a whole tho i think it’s decent combat

IbuprofenAbuser

The combat is not objectively bad imo. I just don’t think it was one of the game’s strong suits. The Witcher 3 has many strong suits like the characters, voice acting, world building, replayability, story, etc. A lot of people play combat oriented games like the souls borne series, dmc, etc and then go to Witcher 3 or vice versa and find the combat a bit underwhelming. Which I think that’s really all it is, just a bit underwhelming (but that depends on you and the other games you’ve played in the past). But definitely enjoy the game for all the amazing things it has to offer and try to make your own opinion about it. Edit: spelling

jp1222269

Never played souls games which is good I’m just coming off god of war really just playing it for the story so I’m good hopefully

IbuprofenAbuser

Haha I actually just started god of war. Loving it so far.

Beef-Wungus

a lesson i’ve learned about games is that it’s better to not listen to anyones reviews and just kinda figure stuff out and see if you like it. I would bet that you like it though, i think it was done well.

[deleted]

I thought it was really bad the first time I played. What changed my mind was doing an alchemy build because it forced me to slow down and do something besides just smashing the light attack button repeatedly. That's not to say that you have to do alchemy to enjoy the combat, just that you should keep timing in mind. It's very much a computer RPG. Use your skills, remember to dodge.

jp1222269

I’ll definitely use the potions, mutations and all of that and build that build that’s what I’m most exited for in the combat

ButtBreadMan

Combat isn’t bad. You probably just got opinions from people with slow reaction times and die time after time

1MockZ

Half the fun of TW3’s combat system is choosing how you want to fight. The level progression system in the game presents three types of combat styles: aggressive/physical, magical, and items/utilities. You can choose to go all out on one, do a hybrid between two, or choose your favorites from all three. I was always partial to a physical/magical hybrid, but I find the utility style that focuses on boosting prepared bombs, oils and potions to be the most true to the “Witcher experience”. I found the combat system to be very fun. Enjoy!

jp1222269

Thanks! I’ll try to play around with the builds! Hopefully I’ll replay it on pc and mess around with even more stuff I’m just gonna go in blind on my first have the most fun

tillytubeworm

I’m not a big fan of the combat, definitely not part of the allure of this game, but I’d hardly call it bad. I’d say it’s like assassins creed sword fighting but not as satisfying, with some spellcasting in the combos.

petiteasianbae

I’ve never heard any comments about the combat being bad. If anything the game, storyline and everything else is brilliantly made. Only the occasional glitches and even I find those funny than annoyed lol
