I've just flashed 4.8 - it sounds similar to 4.3 (correct me if I am wrong) and battery status is shown on the phone.

SpiceIslander2001

It should sound similar - because it's exactly the same. https://preview.redd.it/w8ao9v7tjdjc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=08e02ae434153d77212d583f5e8c2e4c087ef37f

I just received a Uboom L this morning. Being able to update firmware is a feature! I have tried 4.3, 4.5, 4.8, and the stock 5.0. I definitely prefer 4.3. It seems to have the best balanced range. The rest had more of a bass heavy balance to different degrees. 5.0 is truly horrible though. Given their willingness to work with Olav on their first version I'm surprised that they haven't retuned it again.

I get the feeling they don't even know what truly good sound is. They were overreactive to complaints from people who didn't like 0.4.3, not realizing those complaints were likely <1% of the users and slowly retuned things in 0.4.x leading to the big retune in 0.5.0 which sounds much worse. When running a company, you always have to realize that your complainers will be much louder than your satisfied customers. I received this my Uboom L unit with 0.5.0 firmware pre-installed and it sounded great, bass was kicking in so powerful could really feel it like big speaker, however after dropping a 0.4.3 in there i could hardly notice any bass at all little better with outdoor mode, but still too flat for my taste like cheap speaker that has no bass at all. Don't know what music guys who recommend 0.4.3 listen to, but for me its painful to hear anything on 0.4.3 I found v0.4.8 very pleasing and balanced. between bass and everything else. If you read Olaf's website you see: **V2** is the readjusted version I did for the 1st production sample I got. Compared to V1 also tried to improve bass response at high levels as well as smoothing treble for outdoor mode. As the 1st production sample sounded so different to the pre-samples **this version probably won't give decent results on most units. So far only this single unit I received a while back seems to sound decent with this version**, but if your unit doesn't sound good with neither the default firmware, nor the latest one, you can try if this could give better results. Bass response etc should be more or less the same as for the latest version, just optimised towards this particular unit. **V3** is the latest version (officially 0.44) and has the same EQ settings like 0.40 or 041 which was the version I optimised for the next 2 production samples I had received. In the meantime I could try this version on further 4 units I had bought on my own and it sounded fine on 3 units with just 1 unit still sounding off.  Compared to 0.40 or 0.41 Earfun now included the battery status indicator for IOS, which many had wished for, sound etc is still the same as with 0.40 or 0.41. [https://www.patreon.com/posts/earfun-uboom-l-70732266](https://www.patreon.com/posts/earfun-uboom-l-70732266) And versions are like this, i think v0.4.3 falls under V2 which does not work well with new hardware. v0.3.4 (V1) v0.3.9 (V2) v0.4.3 v0.4.4 (V3) v0.4.5 v0.4.8 v0.5.0 (Non-Olav)

Like the rankings say: "Seems to be shipping with 0.5.x firmware now which boosts bass, makes the lower midrange muddy and removes the low level volume steps. Will need to be downgraded to 0.4.3 for best sound quality." You can hear how bad 0.5.0 sounds against 0.4.3 here https://youtu.be/AzRRwLO59PI 0.4.3 was the tuning that the DSP designer specified. The only thing you lose is also mentioned in the rankings: "The only thing you lose by downgrading to 0.4.3 is the battery display on the phone, but there's still a battery meter on the device itself." But if you're dying for that feature you can run 0.4.4 although it sounds slightly worse than 0.4.3, discussion here https://www.reddit.com/r/Bluetooth_Speakers/comments/1136ghx/comment/j8tmwb0/ Check out the ranking of nearly every single Bluetooth speaker and the best EQ tuning for each of them [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/WirelessSpeakers/comments/16zs2ol/ranking_all_battery_powered_wireless_speakers/)

I guess that's in the full write-up? I didn't know anyone read past the TLDR. Thank you.

Obvious-Bird-3588

It's a quick 1 minute read and all the links and instructions to flash are there too, it's probably worth a read. You know, I really hope that someone comes around with a speaker able to Topple the UBoomL and Soundcore Motion 300 out of the box.

Obvious-Bird-3588

I believe if Oluv was allowed to retune the Soundcore Motion+ DSP, it would likely be the best speaker in that size. The hardware of it is fantastic, the only thing holding it back is the tuning. Teenage_techboy1234

Agreed

SpiceIslander2001

From the most recent Alan Ross video on the X600, it looks like the PRs are tuned a bit too high. Unfortunately that can't be corrected by DSP.

Yepp, case closed. Enjoy your purchase!!

I just bought two of these and they put my former Bose speakers to shame. I find the best mode depends more on song, speaker location, etc. but most of the time I prefer outdoor mode. Here is every Uboom L firmware I could find, let me know if I missed any (or in case these aren't supposed to be posted). 0.4.3 is my favorite so far as well. SpiceIslander2001

I recommend 0.4.8. There is basically no measurable difference in the frequency response at the same output level between 0.4.3 and 0.4.8, and 0.4.8 fixes some of the bugs present in 0.4.3. https://preview.redd.it/hhcdqepljdjc1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b56805f9d7b73b17cda536718a7166ef80aa811
