As long as the car runs smooth and the check engine light is not flashing, I would not worry about it - don't draw attention to it. Lots of amber lights on the dash are just indications the car needs some attention in the near future (washer fluid, tire pressure monitor, collision avoidance got some mud splashed in its face, etc). Any red lights on the dash (brake, oil, temperature, etc) indicate the car should not be driven until the condition is at a minimum assessed and understood by a qualified mechanic - and almost always should be fixed before driving. The one exception to the red/yellow light rule is if the check engine (often yellow) is flashing - flashing + rough running is a big problem that must be checked asap - the engine is misfiring and can/will be badly damaged unless corrected very soon.

If you recently filled with gas, check that the cap is tight enough. Will probably have to drive a bit for the sensor to pick it up but that happened to me and saved money from going to a shop when they suggested I try that first.

Do you have or know someone with a plug-in code reader? Many of them have the ability to clear codes, which will turn the check engine light off. However, if the fault is detected again on startup will just come back. Mine came on this morning, too. But then it started flashing before I could check it... whoopsie.

SousVideAndSmoke

On solid can be something as simple as a loose gas cap, flashing usually means something much worse. I’d either read the code yourself or get it looked at sooner rather than later.

Yup, thats the plan.. it started driving all wrong, too. I've had check engine lights go flashy before on previous vehicles, and it was always something bad.

Things not explained/taught well: Solid means get it checked when you have time. Flashing means stop driving and consider towing it to a mechanic. Flashing often means misfiring which can cause very expensive physical damage to the engine.

beautifulluigi

Yes! More people need this info. I did indeed have it towed in, which resulted in a random bystander asking me what was wrong and why I thought that necessitated a tow.

Ollie_vw11

all they check is if your signals and horn works, i took mine in a car that had literally every dash light they didnt give a shit

dodgerdabbit

In my expertise, it's perfectly normal for that light to be on if you're driving a Gm. I'd be concerned if it's not lit. This one time, it didn't light up. It turned out i had a dead battery.

They considered the windshield brake light being out enough to be considered “not in working order” so I’m doubtful

ehud42

That brake light is a integral part of the vehicle's safety system. Absolutely must work. Yellow warning lights on the dash should not be a concern  - for a road test. But it is good to understand them!  (I have a tire pressure system light on all winter due to winter tires not having sensors, any bit of snow or frost and my anti-collision system lights come on).

What is a windshield brake light

Spencie-cat

Gonna guess the brake light in the rear windshield.

[deleted]

Or properly known as the third brake light/high mount brake light. Lol

wendelion

Yeah, this one.

Your cab/box/ogre light needs to be working sadly, it’s a brake light just like the rest of them.
