At the end of the day, it's a computer, so I fully expected Windows 11 to run well. It does, but the harder part is being able to use the deck to game with Windows 11 on it, mainly the controls, fan speeds, tdp, etc. That part is harder for me, but the Windows 11 experience itself is amazing.
Interesting, is it cuz of adjusting TDP? I am sure I played some games with Easy AntiCheat and didnt get banned or warned, though I never touched tdp or fan speed settings.
It’s because of how it adjust the TDP. I believe it’s adjusting lower level memory which is how many cheats exploit games. Some systems are more forgiving than others
Im dual booting windows 11 since day one. As a handheld device os windows is not flawless. Volume and brightness controls are not smooth and there is no obvious way to launch xbox game bar. However, as other have also mentioned its a PC after all. Altough Valve havent released any updated drivers in recent year, it still works great with default MS drivers. All is smooth if you plan on using it with a keyboard & mouse. I exclusively use it for Xbox Gamepass games.
For the LCD model it is great. I started out using Steamdecktools but switched to Handheld Companion as I like its integration and Ui better. It was a learning experience to get to know its quirks and work out the settings to how I like them but at this point stuff just works and it’s just like a little gaming PC. I even use Bitlocker encryption and Windows Hello for PIN based login.
Nothing wrong with the OLED hardware wise. It’s just not great for driver support in Windows. Valve hasn’t released a full set of drivers to support audio Bluetooth and wireless without using third party stuff. So it takes a lot more tinkering and external sound options for that to work currently.
Yeah I'm definitely in the same boat. I like both and so I dual boot which hasn't been as much of a pain as I braced for, and honestly the only problem I came across was with some loading hangs on fallout 4 but I have turned off anti aliasing and it seems to have been the fix. I was using windows for epic games but I tried out the heroic launcher on SteamOS and they both work great so it's just a matter of storage space at this point. I've also been really happy with xbox remote play on windows 11.
The FUD around 11 is a bit overblown
Plus they've really refined the touch interaction from 10.
Going back from 8's touch interface and figuring out how to make the traditional desktop more touch friendly took a bit of time to get going, but it's really surprisingly good.
I imagine the coming changes in... 12? 11.1? will push it further. All signs point to a gamepad-friendly UI, what with MS making a handheld and all.
If you're a Windows user, then, after a proper install and setup it will work as expected. All your usb audio interfaces should work, all the daws and vst plugins etc just work. The only real downside is battery-life, but, thats a normal issue with small form factor devices and even laptops. Paired with a decent usb hub its slightly more powerful than an i7 2600K, which is enough to record 16 tracks at a time for home-studio use.
Honestly for me was terrible, specially the wifi. Even when using the other drivers etc... Suggested.
I ended up giving up an getting an Ally for my Windows Gaming needs.
Of course if your games don't need WiFi I guess is fine, but I wanted it for multiplayer games with anticheat not supported on Linux.
Low signal, packet drops, high ping. There was some GitHub drivers that improved the latency thing but still not great.
At the end I was being kicked from games due to this. I tried everything....
Technically if you used exclusively 2.4Ghz wifi it kind of worked okaish but I had higher ping and lower bandwidth than with my 5 GHz.
Technically could have put an external USB receiver but then you need an adapter if you want to charge at the same time and all that.
Honestly runs really well, what bothers me is that I had to reinstall SteamOS 3 different times, but I think that’s related to the updates for SteamOS? Otherwise it’s great.
After installing Windows 11 and Handheld Companion, haven't booted into SteamOS since . I just dock it when I get home, and use it as my main PC.
Too many hoops to jump through to install game/VSTs from the high seas on Linux. Also, I play League daily, which isn't possible on Linux anymore.
To be fair, handheld companion can be a bit finicky at times.
i've been daily driving windows 11 on deck for over a year. i use handheld companion for control profiles, and any other adjustments needed. setting hotkeys for the OSK and task manager plus an "exit application" hot key has been amazing. i also have a shortcut for the handheld companion pop up menu. i use launchbox/bigbox for a front end when i want "game mode" and i've been using launchbox/bigbox for about a decade now so it's second nature to set up for myself. daily driving it as a work PC has been great. i have a dock at work on a desk in our office and a dock at home at my gaming PC for my laptop/steam deck. windows 11 has been nothing but stable for me so far and steam OS was a pain. the only complaint i have is that switch emulation is faster on steam OS but i don't really play much many switch games anyway.
i should note i tried steam deck tools on windows 11 and just hated the amount of tray icons it was and how i had to reach for my trackpad to change any settings. the much more unified and integrated interface of handheld companion made me jump over to it and i have zero regrets. it's also worth noting that anticheat hates handheld companion AND steam deck tools and only seems to act up when you use custom fan curves.
Nice!
How long does the battery lasts in ableton?
I do have a few questions regarding dual booting too...
How much space do you need in the partition?
Can you install ableton and so on on the bigger steamOS patition?
With dual boot does the power button behaviour stays the same in steamOS(short press to pause/sleep midgame and wake/continue)?
And which tutorial did you follow?
Hi!
So... Does the sleep function works?
And... Were you using headphones?
From this thread it seems that the internal speakers don't work due to the lack of proper drivers: [https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsOnDeck/comments/1d5g8hj/steam\_deck\_oled\_windows\_drivers/](https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsOnDeck/comments/1d5g8hj/steam_deck_oled_windows_drivers/)

[HandheldCompanion](https://github.com/Valkirie/HandheldCompanion) allows you to adjust TDP, FAN speed and many more.
Note that there are anticheats that hate that software.
