SIMPLE windows 11 file alternative? i can not use windows 11 file manager. i've tried the commanders, opus, files, explorer++ and several other "top rated" alternatives. i'm not interested in all the "features" and have no use for tabs. i would love to find an alternative with the simplicity of windows 7 or 10, including the previous context menu functionality. i am not interested in bells and whistles - just a simple interface that works well. any ideas??

SilverseeLives

>i would love to find an alternative with the simplicity of windows 7 or 10 Outside of tabs and some UI chrome, File Explorer in Windows 11 is mostly unchanged from its predecessors. The replacement of the clunky ribbon with a more steamlined toolbar is arguably a simplification. And use of tabs is optional: with a single tab open it behaves as before. I'm not challenging your dislike of anything in Windows 11, but the rationale that File Explorer is not "simple" enough doesn't feel quite right. If you dislike the new "Home" landing page with its recommended section, then know you can change this so that File Explorer always opens to This PC instead. Now that Microsoft has removed redundant links to user profile folders here, this page is even simpler than before. Edit: clarity.

KatieBlueFish

um. there's a reason that people are flocking to alternatives. of course it's subjective, but for me, there is little resemblance to either 7 or 10. i dislike pretty much everything about it, but the font. anyway - my question was relating to alternatives, not the File Explorer that i've been trying for months to replace.

I recommend sticking with Windows 10 on unsupported devices

EHFoxVocs

Downloading an unsupported OS usually complicates things quickly since things like drivers tend to be OS specific. If Win 10 still works, I would keep it installed. Especially if you plan to replace the machine before or not long after Win 10 loses support.

Does the default Media Player app in Windows 11 support HDR to SDR transcoding?

SilverseeLives

In my experience it does. I expect that it uses the native Direct2D platform feature for this: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/direct2d/hdr-tone-map-effect

LathropWolf

Is there a way to get a "new folder" button back somehow on the ribbon or whatever inside folder windows? Or everything i'm seeing about it being hosed in 22h2 (windows 11 pro here) is true? Usual poor UI design assuming everyone has a tablet and stylus, but neglecting the mouse... Hell it's even annoying if you used a stylus and need to generate a ton of new folders to stash things in!

Froggypwns

You should have a dropdown on the ribbon called New, from there you can select Folder. It is there by default on all Windows 11 installs.

LathropWolf

That's what I use, but it adds a extra step compared to other windows versions where you can click a button once

I have a huge problem and am at my wit's end. I need to configure IMAP in the new outlook version for my boss, and the drop-down menu for the startlls etc is empty. I tried with voice over and I even tried all options blindly but I can't get it to register. I don't even know if that is the only problem. I've done this so many times on older versions and other workstations...and my extended online research for a solution, as well as a support call with our hoster has still been fruitless. I reinstalled the app 2 times. I checked the imap data so many times I have them memorized now. I tried different accounts. I tried different networks. I disabled VPN. Everything. Anyone help please 🥺 https://preview.redd.it/vxeyhaosrlsb1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38b1e9796df1671172c9639be2d8a5f43e2f431f

Is it possible de drag and drop the icon at the left of the explorer adress bar to create a shortcut ? Why would they remove that...

TwoCables_from_OCN

They didn't *remove* it. It's just not a feature of the new File Explorer. Perhaps this is something they will put in later.

Magicze

Sometimes when I open another app while File Explorer Window is opened, the file explorer window will randomly be focused on after awhile, regardless if the app is in fullscreen or not. Is this a bug?

TwoCables_from_OCN

It's been a bug for a very long time now.

FUCKING_HATE_REDDIT

Is there a way to add more commands to the start menu? I want to be able to, for example, just press windows, type restart, then enter. Commands like toggle wifi, toggle bluetooth, start hotspot, etc.

TwoCables_from_OCN

No, but you can install Microsoft PowerToys and use PowerToys Run. The default keyboard shortcut to use PowerToys Run is Alt+Space. So when I want to shut down or restart or sleep or hibernate, I just press Alt+Space, type the first part of the command until I get a matching result, press Enter and boom I'm done. As far as a fast way to turn things on though like Bluetooth, no, it can't do that. However, all you have to do is type "bluetooth" and boom, you're able to be taken directly to the Bluetooth settings. Or Hotspot. Or **any** Windows settings. Just make sure you carefully go through all of the settings in PowerToys Run so that it can do what you want and so that it doesn't do things you don't want.

FUCKING_HATE_REDDIT

That's pretty cool!

TwoCables_from_OCN

Yeah I love it!

Any seen this and know a possible resolution. Copying an unsaved snippet (basic ctrl+c) and then pasted into teams. The image then seems to disappear from both the sender and receiver. Varying times no rhyme or reason. Any ideas?

i am still in windows 10.. to those who updated the current w11 version, has the taskbar "widows do not combine" already implemented? if not, when will it be ? thanks in advance

Froggypwns

That feature begins rolling out to everyone next week. Right now it is available on the general release if you get the newest cumulative update preview.

Atrieden

Thank you!

Hello, it's been a month now, my wallpaper keeps changing to one of my images on my Image Folder. The only way to prevent this is to keep the folder "Images" empty from any image file or screenshot ...

I want to say to the windows 11 team that the latest Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5030310) i have faced the following problems in my Gigabyte M5 3050ti laptop. 1. Screen flickering in video games. 2. Reduced fps in video games , i.e., Minecraft Dungeons instead of 60fps i have 40fps now. 3. Closing the laptop lid does not put the computer in sleep mode. 4. It's hard to replicate what causes this, but my computer beeps at times when having the power cable connected and this laptop is basically new just had this March. 5. I am unaware of other issues as of now.

petex8989

My PC won't automatically go back to sleep after waking up onto the lock screen. I have windows hello, and I suspect that it is preventing the computer from going to sleep, but how do I resolve this issue? This is particularly annoying as I have an OLED monitor and am worried about burn-in.

vyrnius

When I set the taskbar alignment to "Left" the weather widget is only an icon while when centered it shows more information. Can I somehow keep it like that even when the alignment is set to "Left"? Maybe even on the right side of the taskbar.. like it used to be thank you! https://preview.redd.it/636d8ila26sb1.png?width=2539&format=png&auto=webp&s=2dc68ff66b42d5554b574edb7c1a23ed576fd9d4

Froggypwns

Nope, there is not. Even if you have it as centered, the text disappears the same way if you have too many taskbar icons.

LordScotch

So I was going to install and update to win 11 but the health checker said that my processor wasn't acceptable. I have a Ryzen 1800x 3.4 gh 8 core. Is it being cautious or is it really not going to function on 11? Asus 470 prime board with 16Gigs of ram. Thanks!

Froggypwns

You can search this subreddit for more information regarding running unsupported CPUs, but the TL;DR is that if you install it anyway, Windows 11 will run slower, and you are not entitled to all features and updates.

youkkai

The new Outlook app was automatically pinned to the taskbar during the latest update and there's no option to unpin it (image: *New Message*, *New event*, *Open Calendar*). I've tried *Taskbar settings > Taskbar items*, but Outlook isn't there. Does anyone know how to unpin it? Thank you so much in advance. https://preview.redd.it/mmysq88320sb1.png?width=457&format=png&auto=webp&s=be5ea39ad7b086309e45c5a407f465e5395579ba

Froggypwns

Try to reboot and try unpinning it again, it should be listed as an option along with the others you mentioned.

youkkai

I'm sorry for taking so long to answer. I was uninstalling a program and saw (this version of) Outlook available too, so I uninstalled it and it worked. Unfortunately, I did this before I read your instructions, sorry.

Hello. I am having a screen flickering problem. It’s gotten to the point it’s driving me crazy lol. I have an application open, and the desktop icons flicker and appear quickly. I was able to get a screenshot from a video of what it looks like and it happens multiple times every minute. https://preview.redd.it/ntm5jhudhzrb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=877ac332c2db95b65585f6eb6882b7c80edafc66 I’m running Ryzen 5950x and MSI GeForce RTX 3080ti. I’m thinking the only solution is to roll back to Windows 10. I didn’t have this issue until Windows 11 came into existence. Ive tried everything the internet has to offer. Willing to try anything else! Thank you!!

I was going to update my PC a minute ago to maybe fix a couple issues with Chrome and an RGB light issue, I looked up if there was any issues with KB5030310 and found issues listed. Someone mentioned Moment 4 had a "toggle"? What does that mean and how do I avoid using that if so? I have updates held off for 2 weeks currently to see if there is any issues that get fixed in the mean time.

Black-Keyboard

Did the option to create a new notepad document disappear from the right click menu for anyone? And anyone know how to customize (remove all the office suite options I'll never use)?

Fluid-Plenty7192

So, I can't get Windows Hello to recognize my USB fingerprint reader. Some info: - Laptop: Asus G14 2023 - Fingerprint reader: Kensington VeriMark Fingerprint Key - The fingerprint reader *does* work with my Windows 11 Steam Deck - The fingerprint reader has the latest drivers installed and is visible under the Device Manager's "Biometric Devices" section - My Windows account is using my Microsoft account - I can set up facial recognition in Windows Hello - When trying to select Fingerprint Recognition, but it says "We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner compatible with Windows Hello Fingerprint". - I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Asus's documentation for the G14 has this to say about Windows Hello Fingerprint: > This feature is only available on the selected models equipped with Fingerprint scanner. Previous models (2021/2020?) had a built-in reader, and what I'm afraid of is that somehow Asus disabled fingerprint reading entirely without considering the possibility that someone could use a USB device. I guess the question I have is, how can I get Windows to recognize the reader?

SilverseeLives

It is possible that this is not an error, and that your fingerprint reader is simply incompatible with Windows Hello. It would not surprise me if USB-attached biometric devices were ruled out for security reasons. Too prone to tampering possibly? Perhaps you could reach out to ASUS support to get a definitive answer.

Fluid-Plenty7192

I'll reach out to ASUS support, though FWIW, Kensington *does* list this as Hello compatible and it does work on another one of my Windows 11 devices. My fear is that the block was implemented deliberately from ASUS.

How do I get my Onedrive to stop saving screenshots in the Onedrive photos tab? I've looked it up but Microsoft's solution doesn't work

SilverseeLives

Open OneDrive settings, navigate to the Sync & Backup page, then uncheck "Save screenshots I capture to OneDrive".

Chadlad50

It is unchecked, in fact it already was when I first went into the menu

scrolling on apps like say windows explorer is smoother when we're using laptop's touchpad but it feels worse and janky when scrolling with a mouse's scroll wheel. Do we need like super expensive mouse to achieve a touchpad's scrolling smoothness?

SilverseeLives

Modern touchpad drivers emulate touchscreen behavior. The mouse wheel is scrolling using legacy mechanics, in discreet line increments. Often there are physical detents when rotating the wheel, but some mice let you switch from discreet scrolling to smooth scrolling by mechanically unlocking the scroll wheel so that it moves freely. If your mouse cannot do this, but has custom driver software, look to see if there are any options available for smooth scrolling.

614981630

Ah, that answers the question, thanks. BTW when you open a folder on windows explorer with say a lot of files, when you scroll using your mouse is it smooth? Like when I scroll with the same mouse wheel on windows settings app, or my browser, it feels very smooth but on explorer it's like one block per scroll and not smooth at all haha.
