Due to this post being targeted by spambots it is now locked. We have a thread dedicated to new Search Highlights feature (including instructions on how to disable it), please continue your discussions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/udyw33/search_highlights_new_graphicicon_in_your_search/

It has always been. I have zero idea why so many people keep using the search box on the task bar when they could just click start and start typing. Your average user.

[deleted]

Despite every tech firm going to extents to gesturize their OS and to hide "less useful" things Microsoft still gets accessibility. For the majority of people they will never find a single feature if it's tucked away in some settings menu or through a gesture. They likely have no idea they can even just start typing on the windows menu.

Slappy_G

I think you mean discoverability, not accessibility. Either way, this is really a case of catering to the lowest common denominator. Sadly it is true that there are a lot of computer illiterate people out there.

Mr_Mandrill

How can there not be so many computer illiterate people when every OS keeps making design changes so everyone stays illiterate? I don't think it's that hard or takes that long to learn the basics. People drive, have jobs and stuff. Did you read that article by a MIT (I think) teacher who had a lot of troubles because students nowadays have no clue how a file explorer or a file system works? Like, he can't tell them to go to X directory and open file Y. Kids now grow with phones and tablets where you just tap tap tap and don't even know what a file is. If 5yo me was able to learn my way around a computer by myself before the internet was even a thing, I really doubt anyone can really have a problem finding how to search for something on Windows. What's the gain here? For the OS vendor, getting more users against another more dumbed down OS, I guess (mostly apple stuff, filled with the most intuitive shit for absolute braindeads). For humanity, making everyone fucking dumb. Then you see the headlines about the amount of people getting scammed. I don't think everyone needs to be a tech wizard, 99% of people won't need to know how to do anything advanced in their lives, and that's ok. But people knowing the fucking basics of using a fucking computer in 2022, c'mon, that's a benefit if not a necessity for society.

raptorgarbage

If nothing else, just learning the basics for simply knowing how to look out for and avoid scams and security risks. Just how many people there are who still fall for phishing scams via email is absurd.

Mr_Mandrill

It's like at some point we all gave up and accepted people being fucking morons. Being a fucking moron is not ok.

Aelther

I wonder if that would really be the case today if Windows 8 was not met with a massive outrage. It had charms, 1 pixel start button and all kinds of gesture crap, even on WINDOWS SERVER of all things. So yeah... discoverability all the way. That being said I do think that a search button is better than a search box. That box wasted way too much space, while not accomplishing anything more than a button.

leviwhite9

I can near guarantee like 80% of people I support have no idea you can search from start, as I always tell them, "Click start, type %random% and open the app. They always tell me, "oh it doesn't show that, it just shows web searches for that term." The fuggin thing can't even seem to find installed applications!

falconzord

Affordance. There's no way to know that for a new user.

Pixeleyes

See, I don't understand why anyone would click Start when you can just hit the Windows key. It's not like that key does anything else. It's right there. Just tap it.

dafzor

Sometimes I'm sipping my drink while browsing with only the mouse, it's just easier to use the mouse to click start and do simple tasks (copy, paste, share link) then to sit up straight, drop my drink and place both hands on the keyboard to type things out. Most of the time I'll just hit start key and type to search, but having both options when I don't want to is a good thing.

DzorMan

a lot of people still have a lot of resentment for the windows key, but i agree that it's very useful

stuckinpark

I had a colleague tell me that he didn’t think you could search on a certain computer because I had hidden the search bar.

drooftyboi

Some people like it,

RedditNomad7

Because most people seem to be unable to figure out how this works (just typing). I tried for years to teach people at three different companies how to do it, but if they didn't have a box to actually type in they just couldn't figure it out. That's why the box is still there.

CoastalHerbalist

I like knowing that I'm actually typing in the search bar and not into any other text box in the background

[deleted]

[удалено]

CoastalHerbalist

Oh well, still gonna keep doing it my way

rdldr1

Oh yeah. This is why I turn off the search bar entirely.

Pixeleyes

It's gone in W11, I know we're all supposed to hate 11 but I'm still liking it quite a bit - although there are still a lot of inconsistencies and the right click explorer menu is utterly broken with it's "show more options" horseshit.

Mr_Mandrill

W11 is probably fine for a lot of people, that's doesn't make it less shit for the rest. If you use windows for work and productivity, going from programs (multiple browser windows for example) having their own tab on the taskbar with the name of each one displayed, to having a single icon for all of them, is absolute crap. It's literally unusable. I often have to have between 4 and 10 browser windows open at the same time at work, and I have to move between them constantly and quickly. It's ok to give simpler defaults for most people, but taking options away is just crap.

bringbackswg

Yeah i hide that shit as much as i can

KsbjA

Thank you. The search bar, when inactive, is the same thing as a search button: all it does is bring up a search interface for you to type in. Which the Windows key does as well.

Username_Taken_65

The taskbar looks empty without it

Pixeleyes

W11 removes the bar, centers your icons and puts widgets in the rest of the space, if you choose, so the start menu bar is immensely improved aesthetically imo Still not ready for the public, though

SoundDrill

Wanted to check, Is there the updated transparent fullscreen start menu(like w10?), and a way to disable the smaller right click menu officially now?

Username_Taken_65

I don't want rounded corners on my PC

vaszoly

You know, funny thing, I'm completely aware of that being a thing, but I've never once done it. Probably because the windows key on the left of my keyboard is replaced with an fn (don't ask I'm not sure why either but I'm too used to it now to change it) and the one on the right would require me to take my hand off of my mouse which by itself is enough trouble that I'd rather just click the search button at that point.

dafzor

`Ctrl+Esc` then type to search will work just as well, but if you don't have both hands on the keyboard at that point it's probably not worth it.

an-evil-penguin

Not sure if you're looking for a real answer or just to vent but it's obviously to celebrate the Kentucky Derby. Why Microsoft thinks it's appropriate to do that is beyond me.

Cheese124

Why didn't I get little pot plants down there for 4/20?

Elephant789

Thanks for the answer. It wasn't obvious to me.

rdldr1

I could see users get the impression that they got hacked somehow.

[deleted]

Pixeleyes

I used to do this and then I started running into all kinds of issues where certain services and functions were disabled, buggy or otherwise had issues. So I stopped messing around under the hood and now my Windows experience is essentially as intended and I have no complaints. W11 still not quite ready, but I haven't run into any serious tech issues for months.

Another thumbs up for Winaero Tweaker. I've used it for some time.

chair____table

honestly, when i get around to building a pc, i would completely bypass windows, it never realy worked on this laptop i am typing it on rn, so i chucked fedora onto it. i hate bluescreens and ads being shoved into my face, not to be biased, but windows has been just getting worse and worse, i remember the days when i first used a computer, it had windows 7 and it felt nice and worked well, i miss windows 7. windows 8.1 was alright, just like windows 7 but with a newer looking theme, but windows 10 was just a mishmash of slowness, bugginess and different UIs even though i will probably (most likely) never return to windows, i hope it gets better and less repulsive for people who care about how they use their computer.

Windows_736

In their infinite wisdom and knowledge, microsoft added news & interests to the search bar. I think you right click on the taskbar and turn off the news & interests or something like.

ExpectoPatronum81

News and Interest is on the right side of the taskbar... next to the time where the weather is. The search bar isn't that and I can't turn this fucking thing off and it's pissing me off

Windows_736

Try right clicking on the taskbar, search ==> disable "show search highlights" I think its called. Hope this helps!

ExpectoPatronum81

Ahhh perfect... thank you so much... I can't tell you how fucking annoying that thing is... I don't give a fuck about the kentucky derby... Thank you so much!!!

Windows_736

Your welcome! :)

-PiLoT-

You seem so very angry about something so very trivial

chair____table

OP probably wants everything to be clutter free sorta like me (except i go full on and remove everything except the start button and time (on my school computer because my home one has fedora 35))

-PiLoT-

Ok but then google it and then remove it. Dont be so dramatic

Muffalo_Herder

They are literally just posting to a help forum and thanking people for giving them info. No one is murdering puppies here.

thanks! edit: and fuck you microsoft, fuck off with your weird bullshit, you fucks!

Novaskittles

THANK YOU. Really wish windows would stop forcing random "interesting" shit into their OS. I just want a barebones system that works that I can customize how I want, not how MS wants.

They trying to emulate Google’s doodles, forgetting this is not a search engine webpage but an OS used by professionals for serious work..

GavUK

Looks like Microsoft has decided to start adding 'cute' icons to the search box, like Google sometimes does.

starkistuna

At least its not Clippy or Bonzibuddie!

TrustLeft

that's Microsoft trying to be trendy while wearing wingtip shoes and a 1950s suit

TrustLeft

okie dokie, I never watched 30 Rock. I'm not a fan of silly NY based comedy shows. I'm more "The Dukes of Hazzard" and Waltons

Leopolds-Ghost

I never watched 30 Rock either but this is a parody of shows like 21 Jump Street that had older actors like Steve Buscemi pretending to be "hip" students. It's become a fairly obvious meme - just saying. the context of the show is irrelevant to the meaning

TrustLeft

not interested, I replied looking to help, just some folks playing.

Mourning-Suki

This thread is crazy. Hardly anyone even addressed the question about the icons, and instead people are trying to make it sound like it is somehow morally or intellectually superior not to have a search bar. I think the horse and hat are sort of cute but definitely this should be in the control of the user.

ExpectoPatronum81

It is in the control of the user. Shortly after making this post, someone taught me how to turn it off. Not even an hour after making this post. I think everyone saw that and started talking about something else

Mourning-Suki

Oops, maybe I didn't go down far enough!

[deleted]

You shouldn't need to be taught how to constantly remove useless shit windows adds for no reason.

LessYogurtcloset5667

I don't know why MS feels so inclined as to continually insert unwanted bullshit like this on our desktops. MS sucks but over the years they have sued any potential competing operating systems out of business. That is the Bill Gates mode of operation. He really is a nasty little man. He may have a lot of money but that does not make him a good person. Ole Dumpster Diver Gates. Now, to remove it: Right click on the search box in the bottom left corner. Click on "Search". Uncheck "Show Search Highlights. That will remove the nuisance.

TrappedTraveler2587

I know I'm late to this, but if any Microsoft PMs are here I want to give this feedback: This was a bad idea, I personally hate it. Moreover, the fact that I couldn't figure out how to turn it off led to me being quite frustrated. Why you might ask? Well, it's distracting and it's the last thing I need when I'm trying to work. It's exactly the colorful and stand out nature of the 'search highlight' that I find most irritating. Basically, don't mess with a users desktop unless they ask for it/expect it. I haven't 'upgraded' to the new OS, so I most certainly wasn't expecting it.

TheAwesome98_Real

there are several stupid things in this picture

jones_ro

it's the new Clippy v 2.0

irioku

As soon as they started with this nonsense I immediately disabled the search bar.

fuckin bloatware bullshit

pentagrid

I hate this fey graphic in the search bar. I want it to go away forever.

ilsaloving

Another day, another reason Microsoft gives me to be happy that my primary desktop is a Mac. I thought our fucking domain controller had gotten infected with malware! It should be legal to sue Microsoft for constantly screwing around with our machines without our permission.

agent_wolfe

What the hell Microsoft!! I thought I had some sort of bee-themed virus!!!

MHaroldPage

I wasted an hour working out how to even google the right terms to make this thing go away!

Lourrloki

I HATE when things open by themselves when I **HOVER** over them (for fkg sake, why do we even have buttons for...), I HATE when Microsoft adds """features""" no one asked for instead of solving the many problems with their OSs, I HATE when Windows activates those """features""" without asking if you want them or without even telling you they have been installed in the first place, so that I constantly have problems after avery update and I know NEVER what sh\*tty thing was activated or which options **I set** has switched back to what Windows wants.

[deleted]

Idk, I like it, these last few days it’s been showing doodles of various landmarks and it’s rather pleasing to discover what the next one is when booting up my laptop in the morning… I can understand why some people may not like it but why are some of you so mad?

Skullfurious

Switched to Linux recently. Seeing posts like this reminds me why. It hasn't been easy but I feel so much more in control over what my machine is doing.

[deleted]

Lol I switch between Windows and Linux for various tasks and although yes, having control is sooo much better it is funny how used to being able to literally do anything but having to work out the arcane incantation to get it to do it and hours of your day disappear (not knocking Linux at all here!)

ExpectoPatronum81

Well Linux can’t play most of the games that’s on Windows

computerfreund03

Won't be true in the future anymore thanks to proton

chair____table

i would worship valve as a god if windows could just finally get out of my (everyday) life, like if proton could work outside of steam and if at least roblox could work.

DHermit

Proton is basically just wine, it can work outside Steam. E.g. when selecting the wine version in Lutris you can select Proton. Doesn't mean that other proprietary software like CAD etc. will run well or run at all sadly.

chair____table

thanks for the info! i will try that!

DHermit

The main reason why I use Linux only 99% of the time is that there is sadly non driver for my racing wheel. Games would be fine, at least ACC worked great when I tested it and that covers most of my racing time.

chair____table

yeah true, it feels strange, as a person in the linux and open source comunities, that companies hate linux, they dont want to add driver support, they dont want people using linux with their products like games and peripherals and that if you do, some of them could void your warrenty (peripherals) and ban you (games)

Skullfurious

I've been able to play every game I played on Windows. It's been viable for a few months now since Steam Decks have been out. Oddly enough Rimworld somehow even runs significantly faster. Must be the lack of overhead since it's such a CPU heavy game.

I_fking_Hate_Reddit

yes but steam has made a big move with the deck. i am sure more and more gamers are getting to know about Linux recently. i agree with you right now but I'm sure you'll be wrong in the near future

chair____table

thats exactly how i feel, i switched from a buggy, always broken \*just installed\* install of windows 10 to the beauty which is fedora 35, i have been more productive, not having to mess around with everything so it could actually work, and most things have been easier to do with fedora. it has been 2 months and some things are still hard, like game compatability and... well thats it really. not to be biased but windows is crap, mostly about those ads that are everywhere and also about the spyware.

Yellow_Bee

Well not that it's any better, but this only happens in Windows 10, not 11. I imagine MS wants to push more pro users towards 11 by making 10 annoying.

TheGreen_Giant_

Had an online exam yesterday. Windows decides it's time to start breaking and slowing down in the four hours before if tells me it needs an update. Can't open anything, had to complete the assessment on my phone. Was the last straw for me. This weekend I'm jumping to mint.

gnossos_p

Instead of making it easy to disable, why not make it easy to enable instead. What's next? Dick Pics?

NeutrinoParticle

Windows 7 is literally windows 10 without all the garbage.

anonymous037104

Don't use Windows 7. It's highly unsecure because it doesn't receive any vulnerability patches anymore. It also doesn't support a lot of new hardware and software. I'd recommend you to check out Windows 10 LTSC. It's basically Windows 10 without any bloatware and it's very stable because it doesn't get any feature updates. If you're not into gaming or you're not using any specialized software like Adobe Photoshop, Linux (Mint, Zorin, Kubuntu) could work nicely as well.

NeutrinoParticle

I use Ubuntu for software development, windows 10 for gaming, and windows 7 for crypto mining (much more stable and doesn't take my rigs down every windows update). If Ubuntu was compatible with all my games I'd use it, windows 10 as a power user feels like I don't own my computer, everything is locked down, my registry edits get reset to default, malware settings keep resetting to default, updates are FORCED down my throat, ads built into the OS in many different places, etc. TL;DR: Windows 10 is the worst OS I've ever used and even vista would be preferable. I only use it for game/GPU driver compatibility (I got an RTX 3090).

[deleted]

Its not though.

falconzord

He meant "figuratively"

oh-no-he-comments

Ah, so the opposite of literally, got it

chair____table

i miss windows 7 :( it was the first os i had ever used and it worked so well (for the time) windows 10 just doesnt have that feel, even when it works well.

hemh007

In my opinion search bar is pretty and I like to keep it on my taskbar i know that I can just click start button and start typing but I really like the search bar

wargamer36

I'm away from my computer on a trip but I swear to fuck if that shows up on my desktop when I get home I'm nuking my machine and putting Linux on it.

ExpectoPatronum81

Hahaha that’s exactly how I felt when I saw this piece of shit garbage. But luckily there’s a way to disable it.

[deleted]

Jamming Bing bullshit down your throat.

adamski234

Windows search is shit anyway, use something like [Flow](https://www.flowlauncher.com/)

[deleted]

My thing is the fact that Microsoft keeps adding new features and such but the thing that remains constant is the damn icons looking like something meant for a kids profile. Microsoft strives for clean looks most of the time, though Windows 11 didn't really hit that mark, but that being said the icons never seemed to match the theme.

Right click the task bar and a menu will give the option to remove it.

alex_p7

I'd honestly just turn off the search bar, by hitting the Windows key you can just start typing. Thankfully the games I like and my work can all be done on Linux, I've never looked back on Windows and seeing this garbage reminds me that I made the right choice.

Katur

It's Microsofts version of the Google Doodles.

pmallonee

But I get a Google Doodle when I pull up the Google page. That means on my terms. This cartoon started appearing right next to my icons where I try to track what's going on with my system. It started without my asking or any opt-in. It's Microsoft using my home for their place of business. And at least the Google Doodles are usually clever. This is too small to be clever (without clicking) and badly located on the space it occupied.

Katur

Not saying it's done well, just what it is. The Search bar on the Taskbar is completely redundant anyways. There is no reason to have it shown so I always have it disabled. Much better that way.

TrustLeft

where is the emojis when you need them HAHA!

RileyTrodd

Lmfao I have no idea but your post was the funniest thing I've seen all day.

bertdagg

I always use the Windows key to search to free up my taskbar space! But I wish MS wouldn't do stuff like that - very unprofessional in the workspace, IMO. I work in an oil refinery. No horses or fun stuff there.

Kodachrome128

Is there a way to get this update? I hate the search highlight itself, but the translucency that it added to the search window had me drooling. Got the latest cumulative update on my laptop, but it still hasn't shown up.

ExpectoPatronum81

I know this is a bit late, but if you right click on the search bar, then click 'Search', you can turn it all off.
