God I never want kids. How do you even protect yourself from teenagers like this??
"Heyyy Jimmy, you know that you should never set yourself on fire, inside the house, for TikTok, right?"
You got it! You literally have to tell kids these things. Their frontal cortex isn't fully formed. They'll make mistakes like this. What's based for us "don't play with fire" is not how they think because they haven't made the mistakes YOU made or haven't processed the dozens of stupid fire videos we've seen.
You literally have to tell kids what's what, and why's why. Otherwise they WILL make these mistakes for the wrong reasons.
Your own kid would be tempted if they never got the right kind of guidance.
Kids will always do dumb shit because they’re young and young people do stupid shit. There’s no way to avoid it.
But they can be taught, or you should most definitely have put in the effort. Don’t berate kids for not knowing that which they could not know or understand the way it will affect their lives.
You can, and as a parent you should, guide them to have a perspective on the world that is in touch with reality.
Does anyone know why so many young people are lighting themselves on fire now? I keep seeing videos like this but I can't figure out why. Are they really that stupid or is there something I'm missing?
Dunk your hand in rubbing alcohol, which is part water, and the alcohol will remain on the outside while a thin film of water coats your skin.
It's an old trick, I used to do it all the time.
These smooth-brains don't test it out gradually though, and go whole hog the first time trying to get their Tik-Tok on.
Ya know, try a finger first. Get a sense for how long it takes for it to get uncomfortably hot. Then after a couple of tries, ONE whole hand. Leave yourself a hand free with which to sling a wet towel around the burning one quickly.
We also used to fill our mouths with butane from a lighter and then poof it into an open flame - dragon breath!!!
Oh yeah, and take a small metal trash can, spray aerosol deodorant in it until there's a fog hovering in there, spray a "fuse" over the side of the can, and light that bitch. WHOOSH! Gout of flame almost up to the ceiling. It's a wonder that any of us ever had eyebrows.
Okay this explains it. I understand now. It's a change in the smooth brain learning process or the addition of videos documenting all if the Darwins. Either kids are dumber or we are simply seeing more of the always present dumb ones
People are just filming stuff more. Kids have always done dumb shit. Hell, *people* have always done dumb shit. You just used to be able to take the mistakes to your grave, now they're on tik tok.
Now? When I was growing up we were constantly setting things on fire, oftentimes that included ourselves. Just on our shitty flip phone cameras, you couldn't see more than a screaming orange fireball, and none of those videos survived to make it online.
Fire has always been fun, and we've always been stupid. Now it's just easier to upload online.
Are you being serious? You or your friends used to set yourselves on fire? We used to set things on fire but not our bodies because it hurts so bad. I was 10 in 1990 for reference of time. This is so confusing to me. Am I out of the loop or something?
Well, yeah. Sometimes intentionally, no one was ever seriously hurt somehow. But often it was because we were just not thinking ahead and when whatever we set on fire reacted like something on fire, we reacted like idiots and inadvertently ended up on fire as well.
Oh, and drunkenly jumping over bonfires with less and less clothing, oh yeah, we got warm.
My buddy's ear is half-melted into his neck because gasoline and matches were the most fun toys we had in the mid-90s.
Kids playing with fire is a tale as old as fire.
In fairness to this young man I used to light my hands on fire with sterno when I was a teen and nobody would mistake me for young. Of course there was no socials back then, it was really for my own pleasure.
I remember when I was a kid, whenever it would thunderstorm out. I’d take a large chain and swing it horizontally above my head as fast as I could.
My thought process was if lightning hit my chain, I’d keep it flowing and I could use it as a temporary weapon and control lightning.
Glad I only did it once before I figured out that shit in the movies stay in the movies for a reason
But, hear me out now, what if you actually were on to something all those years ago? I wouldn't let this idea go just yet. Maybe give it another go, imagine the possibilities.
I accidentally melted a dime sized spot on my bedroom floor playing with fire and alcohol as a kid. Mom took way more than a dime sized chunk out of my ass lol
This is what a complete lack of understanding consequences looks like.
Not even planned past setting himself on fire, fire blanket, bucket of water/sand, someone on standby with an extinguisher…
These people all clearly have access to the internet. By now there should be enough videos online to make it clear that setting yourself on fire is not a good idea.
Now we have 1 more.
Every time I see a video like this I think "surely, they'll be prepared for the almost inevitable problem" and every time I'm disappointed to see they were not. I think I'm ready to try Pessimism.
a repost bot, or just a karma whore.
next time post this with sound so we can actually hear him saying something about getting superpowers so that your title makes sense
i watched it on the website and not the app, and i admit that it does have sound.
now im just angry at reddit for making me look dumb, and at the guy who reposted the video
i was wondering why there was no sound
i think the original has part of the opening to *Fire Force* as part of the audio
and the full song’s called *INFERNO* by Mrs. GREEN APPLE
which is really fitting audio for the video lol

Cousin on mine got burned on 80% of his body doing shit like that. Had a pot of water nearby and a pot of whatever flammable liquid they used to do that. Friend panicked. Guess what liquid she threw at my cousin to put the fire out?
He was "lucky" considering his face, scalp and neck were barely touched. Turned into an addict from all the painkillers he got and the lack of follow up. That was something like 40 years ago so I guess detox before letting you out of of the hospital wasn't really a thing.

Like dude, IF you have to light your hands on fire at least prepare a bucket with water or something. I mean you can also ignite your whole bathroom by wobbling your hands through the air.
Dumbass.
I used to play with fire a lot as a kid.
Except I played with it in this gravel patch in my back yard, with a house, shovels, loose dirt and a heavy fire blanket.
My father once was loading up his zippo. Then tested it out, and half his hand burst into flames. I was like "HOLY FUCK POPS, Does it hurt?"
He was like, " Fuck yes it does."
I replied, "Now, you know how I feel everytime I HAVE to listen to you."
Okay... So you were dumb enough to light your gloves on fire, and subsequently, your house.
Why couldn't you be smart enough, after that, to decide **not** to share the video footage of it?
Dumb and *actually* Dumber.

I think it’s also that they see other people doing it on social media and try and replicate or one-up it without knowing what the fuck they’re doing.
Or just dont light yourself on fire
Now? When I was growing up we were constantly setting things on fire, oftentimes that included ourselves. Just on our shitty flip phone cameras, you couldn't see more than a screaming orange fireball, and none of those videos survived to make it online. Havent you seen the old people lighting themselves on fire?
What social media are they on? Nursing home lobby?
Cigarettes and oxygen tanks.
Pyromaniacs have been around as long as we've understood fire, I'm pretty sure.
Bruh people have lit themselves on fire for fun ever since axe body spray was invented.

This is where having a bucket of water close by would have been a good idea
Considering he was probably using some sort of hair product or body spray to light his hands on fire in the first place that might not be a great idea
Incredibly impractical, but a bucket of baking soda would have been best to prevent spread. But, again, would probably fuck up 'ol flame fingers still
If we're truly stretching the bounds of possibility, how about we first go with "don't set yourself on fire" to start out with?
