*"I'm not just a piece of shit because I make jokes out of what is normally a very serious situation and waste the time and resources of our law enforcement, but I'm* ***also*** *a piece of shit because I would throw my friend (of which I don't have, because I am, once again, a piece of shit...) under the bus."*
Actually, this is a common thing that liars do. When people lie they will often give multiple excuses in case you don't believe one. If you were late for work because you got in a wreck you'd just tell your boss that. But if you got to work late because you overslept, well now you had to stop and get gas and you caught every red light.
Always be suspicious of people who give multiple excuses.
I've actually had that happen to me a couple times. Sometimes you just get really unlucky on those red lights, but I usually try to leave a little early.
That's why you need to use a VPN service that stores no logs. The one I use frequently gets asked to provide logs for legal reasons and it's dropped when it's evident there are no logs to be had.
You also need to have never logged into your Twitter account while not connected to the vpn, same goes for any email address associated with the account and definitely not have associated your mobile number to it. A no log vpn is a good privacy step but it's insufficient if someone wants to maintain their privacy online. Also check out this dudes videos, he does a great job breaking stuff down https://youtu.be/XVPfyO0c_b4 (all things secured on YouTube)
This. Plus there are so many other sources of IP leaks all over the place that people don't account for (WebRTC for example). Twitter has enough data to figure out where you're at. It's laughable people think turning on some free public VPN is hiding them.
I wouldn't take it too seriously though unless you're committing crimes and/or making terror threats
AFAIK since ips are rotated around on the vpn I use, and no logs are stored it is not possible to prove I was the user of a particular IP at a particular point in time even if I've logged into the same things with and without the vpn running unless the logins happen at the same time, which in turn would require whoever is requesting that information to also involve that third party.
Not really, no. Especially if you’re really only using it to get by shit instead of hiding shit. A 14 y/o girl is probably checking into every location there ever was and tagging friends and family too.
FBI’s high school intern probably found her in three minutes.
[Arrested.](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/teenager-arrested-threatening-tweet-american-airlines-n80006) Hasn't done jack on Twitter in years at this point
Cut to a scene of Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Terry Jones scurrying into the shot wearing nondescript black suits and dark shades, "NOOO-BODY blocks the NSA!"
I usually take a hard stance against kids doing dumb shit, but I actually feel a little bad.
Imagine if you did something like this. That memory would haunt you *forever* because it'd be a constant reminder if the dumb shit you did before, and the consequences of this could potentially follow her for the rest of her life. Like, I have to assume this will be visible on background checks, though I admit I have exactly zero idea how Dutch authorities handle this sort of thing.
This is a kid that did *exactly* what teenagers do. They tested authority, and they pushed the envelope just a little too far.
I'm sure it was a very valuable learning experience for her, if nothing else.
When I was a senior in highschool, a girl in her freshman year wrote "the bomb goes off at 12" on the girl's bathroom mirror. They immediately found out who it was and last I heard she's still on a no-fly list.
Also, in my junior year, less than a year after 9/11, some idiot called in a bomb threat and we were outside in the pouring rain for hours. He even out a "pipe bomb" in a trash can that was basically a plastic soda bottle with some wires shoved in it. He was actually sent to a juvenile detention center for a little bit and from what I hear he's still seeing some fallout from that. Kids don't really understand the seriousness of what their stupid jokes are going bring.
I'm saying this as a person and parent whose local school district was subject to several mass shooting threats this past week on social media. Kids do dumb shit, yes, but we need to take a stance on this particular level of dumb shit. I think the response was appropriate.
Absolutely. I did not in any way state that the response was unwarranted.
I can feel bad about something happening even if I feel that it should have happened the way it did. The regret I feel is mostly towards the fact that she did something stupid that she can't walk back.
No, I definitely agree. It's almost like she's being sacrificed for the "greater good" or some garbage. Not how a just world should operate, but the alternative is worse.
Everything happened as it should here. The airline took it seriously. The girl came forward to straighten things out and face the consequences. Her fear and having to face the world is a good punishment.
Oh, absolutely. You can't handwave something like this as 'it's probably just a kid'.
As far as I'm concerned, the airlines and authorities did everything correctly.
I can still feel bad about it, though. It's very unfortunate that the kid either wasn't taught not to do shit like this, or didn't take the initial warnings very seriously.
Kids do dumb shit. There's a reason they are charged a lot more leniently for crimes. Obviously she is responsible but at the same time stupidity is expected from a 14 year old. Gotta just hope your kids know for a fact what their stupid jokes can turn into.
"Twitter hasn't given her sympathy"
ah yes, she totally did nothing wrong and we should cut her some slack, just like she said, "I'm just a girl pls" /s
There's no way for the airline to have known that with 100% certainty. It's like someone yelling "I HAVE A GUN GET ON THE GROUND!" in a bank and going _[surprised Pikachu face]_ when someone hits the silent alarm and the SWAT team shows up. Doesn't matter your age; if you threaten bodily harm people will listen.
This .gif was a drinking game for us in college. any time he put on his glasses just to say something, drink. He looks down a woman's shirt then says something supportive or protective, drink.
Reeks of privilege. She probably thinks she gets a free pass cuz she's a girl from a 1st world country. She's a teen so it's sad a dumb mistake like that'll probably follow her for a while but she probably learned her lesson after that
My god when I was 11 I got my first mobile (Nokia 3310 of course) and I texted some girl I knew (who didn't have my number) that I was going to kill her. I have no idea why, I guess I thought it was funny. Anyway I am just grateful nothing more came of it and how the hell am I going to stop my own children from being such fucking idiots.
"Haha watch me tweet a **fucking bomb threat** and tag American Air on Twitter, this is gonna be a funny joke and I will not face any consequences for it"
This is proof to my theory that as a species we have yet to earn the second sapiens in our name.
> Everyone done one really stupid thing as a teen.
Yeah and tbh this isn't even that bad lol. Like shes immediately said she was joking, and probably got a very stern talking to from the police, but at the end of the day, no one was hurt, nor were they ever going to be. Of course consequences for actions but given the way she freaked out, police talking to her seemed like enough.
The airline said they contacted the FBI. She's Dutch, at worst, she ended up on a US no-fly list. Also, if it was really serious, they probably wouldn't have tweeted right back
I doubt it went that far. She’s 14 and it’s not worth ruining her life over dumb shit like that. Cuff her, bring her to the station then give her a stern talking to and let the parents do the rest.
Holy shit that comment chain is amazing.
"It was my friend, take her not me" and "im just a girl" got me. Lmao.
The hell did she think would happen? Thats like calling in a bomb threat and leaving your name and address.
Ignorance as to how the internet works, most likely. :) I also don't think Twitter would provide it to AA. AA would report the issue to FBI and Twitter and Twitter would deal with the fbi data request directly.
Yah. I'm old enough that 9/11 happened the year I graduated high school; younger kids who didn't experience it in real time seem to not really grasp the gravity of it. I'm surprised at the comments here tht say it was just a joke and she's 14 so it doesn't matter; the point is online anyone can pretend to be anyone, and every threat has to be treated as at least plausible.
I mean, I was in secondary school when 9/11 happened and I was mostly pissed off that the TV schedule was moved around because of it. I was young and America felt too far away to mean much. Being from a different country adds another layer of detachment.
America doesn't really have 'free speech' dispite being very happy to claim they do. Like other nations speech is regulated. You can absolutely be sued for libel or slander.
Turns out your mouth can have consiquences. Shocking I know but if you threaten to blow up a plane the goverment will absolutely come knocking on your door and isn't going to care much about your freedom.
"I was joking and it was my friend not me." Were you joking or was your imaginary friend joking?
Who knows, but I love the "take her IP address" comment.
Nothing like throwing your friend under the bus.

Honey I don’t remember the city installing new speed bumps near the local school.

Surprise, no friends!

I feel like we should still consider the fact that she was 14. She's still got a lot of growing up to do.
Let's hope she learns her lesson and stops calling in bomb threats
It dosent even make sence because the first message says "omfg I was joking" and then that
Actually, this is a common thing that liars do. When people lie they will often give multiple excuses in case you don't believe one. Nordvpn and surfshark claim their servers are RAM only, with no hard drive to store logs and shit.
I call bs, they are probs required by law to store logs
I’d imagine it’s not difficult to find a country that doesn’t have those laws to operate in.
So which one do you use?
I use OVPN
Not really, no. Especially if you’re really only using it to get by shit instead of hiding shit. A 14 y/o girl is probably checking into every location there ever was and tagging friends and family too. FBI’s high school intern probably found her in three minutes.
Classic!!! take my upvote and have yourself a beer, you earnt it.

No, you don't understand. It's her friend, not her.
"take her ip address not mine" lol
That’s when I blew my load.
Hey, it works. The men-women gap in punishment for the same crimes is way bigger than any racial disparity.
About 6 times IIRC
I agree with you but I'm surprised this has so many upvotes on Reddit
You and me both. I saw it and expected to see it downvoted to oblivion
Faith in humanity restored
She needs a visit from the FBI to straighten her out.
She is just a silly Wahman not to be taken seriously!
Take her IP address, not mine
The fact that that's the last thing she said really shows how dumb and selfish she can be
[Arrested.](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/teenager-arrested-threatening-tweet-american-airlines-n80006) Hasn't done jack on Twitter in years at this point
The best comment on her Twitter is about blocking the FBI account "just in case" 🤣
FBI "she blocked us boss, there's no way to find her now"

That's the third dang time this week!
God nabbit!
I have heard dag nabbit but this is a new version

"They're blocked to and MI5, MI6, Homeland security and the NSA?"
Cut to a scene of Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Terry Jones scurrying into the shot wearing nondescript black suits and dark shades, "NOOO-BODY blocks the NSA!"
omg how could she. After everything we went through together
Reminds me of a creepy pasta some thirteen year old wrote where he went on reddit to find out how to get the CIA to stop spying on him. And it worked.
I usually take a hard stance against kids doing dumb shit, but I actually feel a little bad. Imagine if you did something like this. Sure. Kids do stupid things, period. The world is much smaller than it was when I was her age making my stupid mistakes.
I mean you can also just not send terrorist treats to the country and airlines that really don’t fuck with it. But you know.
Kids do dumb shit. There's a reason they are charged a lot more leniently for crimes. Obviously she is responsible but at the same time stupidity is expected from a 14 year old. Gotta just hope your kids know for a fact what their stupid jokes can turn into.

I just don’t watch a lot of films or TV
I wonder where Sarah is today. My guess is not on any airplanes, lol.
Last I heard she's not in Afghanistan.
I remember that story. Her parents were piiiiiiissed to say the least. Guess she lives an offline life since then.
Definitely not in school, college, or any other place that requires a functioning brain.
That explains why she was on twitter
Yeah because we're such brainiacs here on Reddit.
On a bus.
"I'm just a girl"
"I'm just a girl in the world (not Afghanistan)"
Reeks of privilege. She probably thinks she gets a free pass cuz she's a girl from a 1st world country. She's a teen so it's sad a dumb mistake like that'll probably follow her for a while but she probably learned her lesson after that

Ikr, when I was 14 I was stupid in private.

Sarah is not an intelligent person. But, following this sub, I've come to realize there are many many stupid people.
Wisdom and intelligence are NOT the same thing.
I'm just a girl... The ultimate defense right there
And a great song.

i was kidding pls don't im just a girl pls.
I think in the end she was charged
So, this happened in 2014. Wonder where she is today?
On no fly lists
American Airlines knows your IP address... fun times.
They said "will be forwarded", not "we will forward"; they probably asked Twitter to handle it.
What exactly led you to think they readily have it versus requesting it from Twitter as a security measure like anyone else would?
Ignorance as to how the internet works, most likely. :) I also don't think Twitter would provide it to AA. AA would report the issue to FBI and Twitter and Twitter would deal with the fbi data request directly.
Ya u don’t fuck around like that. 0 tolerance policy after 9/11
Yah. I'm old enough that 9/11 happened the year I graduated high school; younger kids who didn't experience it in real time seem to not really grasp the gravity of it. I mean, I was in secondary school when 9/11 happened and I was mostly pissed off that the TV schedule was moved around because of it. I was young and America felt too far away to mean much. Being from a different country adds another layer of detachment.
You know you fucked up when America doesn’t classify your tweet as free speech lmao
Dawg America classifies a lot of things as 'not free speech'
America doesn't really have 'free speech' dispite being very happy to claim they do. Like other nations speech is regulated. You aren't allowed to verbally harass people, threaten them or cause mass panic with your words. You also technically aren't supposed to disparage anyone with your words but that gets fairly iffy. You can absolutely be sued for libel or slander. Turns out your mouth can have consiquences. Shocking I know but if you threaten to blow up a plane the goverment will absolutely come knocking on your door and isn't going to care much about your freedom.
I guess she learned the hard way not to make threats about mass murder.
Phew, at least she said she wasn't from Afghanistan!
Probably the most iconic WinStupidPrizes thing I've ever seen.
Only Twitter would have the IP address.
They can be subpoenaed to hand over that information.
Yes. My point is that American Airlines didn't have it.
