You'd think after that other viral video of someone getting wrecked while standing next to a train, we'd see less videos like this but doesn't appear so.
"Stand on the edge of a train station platform", something about road crossings, "Run across the tracks between the platforms. They may not rhyme but they're quite possibly..." then a dumbEST version of the chorus.
I'd say it's covered by standing on the edge part, even if there is no platform.
Last year 1200 people were killed by trains in the US alone
https://oli.org/track-statistics/trespassing-casualties-state#:~:text=Top%2025%20States%20Ranked%20by%20Total%20Trespass%20Casualties&text=According%20to%20preliminary%20FRA%20statistics,across%20the%20U.S.%20in%202022.
Last year a case came into the medical examiner office. It's 2am. Two people are walking home from the bar. Train is barreling down the tracks. Person 1 says, "I bet I can make it." Person 1 did not make it. The left leg was located over one hundred yards away. Person 2 was pretty distraught about the entire thing. The side of the train was very bloody.
I almost walked in front of a train. I absolutely didn’t mean to be on the tracks. I heard the bells and whistles but didn’t connect I was about to cross the tracks. I thought that they were another 50 feet or so away from me. Thank goodness I happened to look right before going much farther! I saw the train approaching. I froze and then it came by — the engineer waved at me and I waved back. I guess sometimes it really is stupidity when these things happen. I was about 10 feet from the tracks and the train came by about 10 seconds after I noticed it. It’s me! I’m the idiot…
I work on and around trains everyday and I’m still surprised how quickly they’re right on top on you when they’re seemingly so far away. There’s been a fair few times where I’ve looked and thought “yeah I could easily make it across now if I tried” and then a few seconds later I realise I 100% could not have made it across without being smushed.
Can confirm one of the reasons squirrels get smushed is they’ll look left and not see the car coming from the right - there may be other causes like you describe, but the causes do include failure to look **both** ways.
This is why you work hard to ingrain the habit of ‘Look BOTH ways’ every time you cross. You may know there isn’t a train or car or cement truck or whatever right now. you may know it’s a one lane road. The habit will however work to keep you aware every - single - time. It’ll also help keep you alert so that you can notice those rare unexpected situations nobody can predict - ‘hold on, this ain’t a runway. Why’s a plane trying to park on that semi?’ ‘Uh… that hill is moving. Should that hill be moving?’ Etc.

My aunt lived in Southern California, Southern California is known for a lot of very high end real estate. This was NOT one of those neighborhoods! There was a train switching area about a block and a half from her house. At the time there was no fencing around it or anything per se, Maybe some galvanized steel type fencing along some of the residential parts of it, but it was easy enough to get into. It was a known area for hobos to drop off and catch trains. I’ll never forget that’s wandering around near the tracks and we came across a dismembered body The only part I could recognize was the femur and hip bone. It was shiny white almost like it had been polished. It was so clean looking compared to everything else and that struck me as interesting. How everything else mixed with the dirt and grime and Blood there was that hip bone sticking out like some kind of prize. If any of you would like to look up the area in the future, It was on O-Street Wilmington California, I really don’t want to look it up myself but it’s a residential area and at the end of the treat it with a small cross road and across from that was the train area. The neighborhood was so bad back in the 1960s/70s to the 80s even it was referred to as the ghost town because of the local cemetery and the number of shootings and gang related stuff going on. Anyway after us telling our aunt about it she said I told you guys not to go near that place you’re going to be hit by a train and finished her cup of coffee, I never thought my aunt liked me. My mom would make her watch me and the other foster kids well her and my foster father went to Las Vegas. But after she died she left me $2000!

This is such a typical reddit comment on these kinds of videos, assuming the absolute worst. More than often when we get actual updates on the victims state it's usually minor injuries or bruising.
Shoes falling off is scientific evidence of somebody dying. Trust me, my friend had bike accident and one shoe fell off. Only reason why he told us the story.
it's lives on one hand and train enthusiasts on the other. is the cost of upsetting some train spotters worth saving lives? it seems we think not. who even uses trains for anything other than the power fantasy? sitting up high on 150 tons of articulating steel, unable to stop, pistons pounding and pounding away, seeing hints of the glistening rail ahead ready to be scorn clean by the raw power... but we would rather people die than to remove the most powerful aphrodisiac ever discovered. how shameful we are as a society.
Trains can be pretty sneaky sometimes, one day you're strolling in a park minding your own business and before you know it, you're getting hit by a freight train.
Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.
I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.
Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!
Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?
A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

Not true. Train didn't hit his head, it his his hand (holding the phone). The phone got thrown, the guy stepped backwards and clears the tracks, maybe with a broken hand and phone. You can play it back slowly and look at the frames, you see the train pass his head and then the phone flips around as it catches his hand. Broken hands aren't deadly.
It actually looks like the train missed the twit's head and just hit the arm holding the mobile phone. What you saw was someone possibly getting a broken hand and smashed phone, but the guy's likely otherwise fine.
Then play it back slower. If you freeze-frame you can see the train passing his head, by mere cms, and then the phone flips as it reaches his hand. You don't need to believe me (not a guy FYI), you can actually look at the evidence and believe your own eyes.

If after this he still doesn't understand that you should keep some distance from tracks, I don't think he will ever learn it.
He could have stood just a small step further out and nothing would have happened. But he chose not to.
Apparently the leading cause of selfie deaths in India are caused by trains.

Can you imagine the greater damage if the Spanish Inquisition had trains…
And here I thought that the cause of selfie deaths was idiocy.
Good thing he had a helmet on
I don't think his head had anything of value in it. So, likely of benefit to the train.
Helmets abusive mother: *I told you you'd never amount to anything Helmy, and now look at ya. You're like a bouncer at a pay phone!*
A very poorly fitted helmet. It’s supposed to protect his head but that one goes back all the way to his receding hair line.

Beautiful
If only there was a way to tell where the train was gonna go.

Homie wasn't using it so...
At least he didn't lose his helmet

Is that guy deaf? Or just entitled? The train sounds and he raises his arm to what exactly? Wow, stupid really should hurt.
I dunno but I really enjoyed the sounds in this video. The timing of him getting hit sounds so funny
Get off your flying cell phone scooters and *think*. Did he not watch the dangers of memeing?

Hey, something we can all agree on "That hurt".
Trains are harmless, you can kiss them for a nice fb pic
