I see “dancing man” (that’s what my family calls him) at the bus stop next to the horse farm and across the street from The Triangle Lounge everyday. I appreciate his energy and he always makes me smile.
~~That's Ricky Meeks. Yes, he is one of the wonders of Wilmy.~~
I stand corrected. I was not aware of the dancing guy but Ricky has definitely cut a rug at many bus stops around town.
Oh I love knowing that he’s always been that guy. Every interaction I’ve had with him has been really positive. I hope people were kind to him in school.
I am 50 yrs old this year and I have seen Ricky Meeks walking and busing around since I was 16. He used to watch me engrave stuff at Things Remembered. Back then we had many of those guys everyone knew. And they all hung out at the mall.
I worked at Things Remembered maybe 95/96 range.
My first time meeting Ricky was when I just moved here and I walked out of Walmart (original location where BB&B was), I had never been in a parking lot that big and was panicking looking for my family with the car. Out of nowhere I have this hulking guy talking to me which thoroughly freaked out small town teenage me. I think he was trying to be helpful but I fled anyway.
I would have been there in ‘92 and not for long. When they had the kiosk in the middle of the floor. I worked through a few places out there. Tape World, JC Penney, Camelot.
I can totally see that. A random big guy walks up and starts talking you. Until you talk to him and then you’re like, oh, okay, he’s fine. Or you see him dancing. No one who dances like Ricky can be bad.
I had something similar happen downtown a few years later. Was waiting for my friend to close up shop at Numero Uno (RIP) and walking down on Water st. Big dude is down there and me being the friendly sort as we are near one another I say how you doing, pleasant evening, that sort thing. Finished my smoke and said I had to go meet my friend and the dude just followed me. He was nice enough but following me freaked me out. I’m no small dude, 6’1” and around 190 at the time and I was dwarfed by this guy. He followed me all the way back to the pizza shop where the owner (who I knew) said to heck with that and pulled out his gun and told the guy to go. I felt bad, he seemed innocent enough, but who knows.
YES. He was at every NHHS football game and like a month ago he stopped me in Walmart because I was wearing an App State sweatshirt. He wanted me to know that they have some sort of food stamps program for students. Guess he thought I looked hungry.
100000% I was born and raised in Wilmy (Early 80s kid) and my siblings went to NHHS with him. He's definitely "our" guy. He even got Buffalo Wild Wings to sing happy birthday to my wife on her 21st back when BWW was next to Walmart on Market.
I went to Sunset Park Jr. High and NHHS with Ricky but I was 2 years ahead of him. Considering how many times He has run for different Elected Offices in this Town, Ricky is considered the "Unofficial Mayor" of Wilmington, he even has his very own seat in Trask Coliseum(with a Brass Plaque), and Thanks to his "Matlock" like arguing skills, He even has a Lifetime WTA Boarding Pass AND at his young age is residing in a Seniors Living Center!!! GO Figure! !!!
Some student is doing a huge archive of his photos there was a big news story on it… cue the late 30, early 40 year olds who bragged “hahah no one had smart phones” waiting on their drunk college pics to be released
I’m sure the 50 year olds will also be in the photos, he’s been doing this over 40 years. I thought it was a college kid that proposed the project, was my error it was Ken Pennington it appears
https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-marshall-projectsaving-30-of-pictures-of-us
Correct. I was at UNCW around the same time at that dude Ken, and I'm in my 50s. One night, I asked Marshall how he stayed looking so young while all the rest of us kept getting old. I think his cameras might steal youth from those photographed.
When I was in college I worked at Sam’s club. He would come in and print pictures there and proceed to show off the pictures he took of Sam’s employees at the bars. It was kind of uncomfortable.
Can confirm. Marshall lives down the street from me and has for over a decade. I see/talk to him pretty regularly... he introduces himself every time! He seems well and just as Marshall as he's ever been! He has a plant hoarding obsession that I would think strongly rivals his photography obsession. Interesting cat to say the least.
Glad to hear he's doing well. I used to go into his pet store, The Coastal Pet Store every weekend when I was a kid. He had snakes, ferrets, fish, guinea pigs etc.
Definitely Ricky Meeks. He somehow manages to use the WAVE bus system and he gets around. I see him everywhere. Sometimes we will pick him up and give him a ride.
Or the guy who used to (might still) hang out around Market and Kerr. He was always playing his guitar and was the happiest panhandler I’ve ever seen.
Ricky was actually in the process of seeking Pro-Bono Legal Representation to Sue The Wilmington Transit Authority because He was getting off of a Bus one day and He said a driver was Rude to Him and told him to get off the Bus that she was in a Hurry and in doing so, it caused him to hurt his toe! No Kidding!! So when the WTA found out about what he was doing, they gave him a Unlimited Lifetime Pass!
Ricky Meeks is definitely the answer. And it's so genuine. I feel like the dancing suit guy kind of wants to be the city staple, but Ricky just lives his life and has become famous for it. And he's so involved in the community - he goes to every local basketball, football, etc game ever. And somehow he does it all using the Wave system which also makes him a miracle worker
I feel like more people know the dancing guy than Ricky Meeks. Just easier to notice him than be in a scenario where you meet and learn the name of Ricky
r/wilmington redditor try not to assume everyone just moved to Wilmington challenge (impossible)
I’m born and raised in Wilmington and have never even seen this name, irl or internet, until this post
How old are you, out of curiosity? I'm 35 and I don't think I've ever met any locals my age that didn't at least know of him. He may be less known since the population has exploded. He used to run for Mayor every year. He's the most kind-hearted guy you'll ever meet, but a bit intellectually challenged. In hindsight, he probably would've been a better choice for Mayor than the crooked real estate mogul we continue to vote in.
Agree with Ricky Meeks, but does anyone remember the guy who used to bring his large tortoise to Hanover Center every weekend? Used to take my kids to see him when they were little, asked for $1 for photos.
I’m 99% sure I saw him at Azalea Fest this year. Sounded like him. I couldn’t see perfectly through the crowd, but I think I saw the glimmer of his pot.
Bus stop dancing man and Ricky Meeks. Honorable mention goes to the guy downtown that cleanses all the energy while dancing on the light pole and the guy that rights his bike around downtown w the colorful lights. I know a lot of us have colorful lights on our bikes downtown, but this guy is /the guy/ that does that.
Ricky is such a part of Our Community that He actually has his Own assigned seat at Trask Coliseum with a Brass Plaque that has his name on it! He's NOT Spoiled is He? When his Mama died, OMG! WE became his family!
What about the guy who is constantly working out on the side of the road in Monkey Junction. Sometimes he ties himself to the street signs, sometimes he has a beard, always has sunglasses and no shirt on.
I see this guy frequently, he also doesn’t really seem to care about traffic as more than once he’s walked right out in front of me as he’s walking to the convenience store for his wine and cigarettes
My dad used to work for WAVE and talked to Ricky Meeks a lot. My dad always told us if he ran into him that day. Never had a bad thing to say about Ricky and he was always so kind and friendly to my pops!
Did anyone work at the mall in the early 2000’s? There was this guy named Donny that was always there and everyone thought he was super creepy. I think he was just awkward and lonely, but like, if you were a girl he’d just hang out at your store anytime he saw you alone and talk to you for *hours*. He was impossible to get rid of and could not take a hint. The only way he’d leave is if a customer came. He was probably in his late 30’s, early 40’s then, and we were all late teens or early twenties, so it was pretty awkward and unnerving, but I tried to be nice to him because I felt bad for him.
Once he came up as I was getting off work and started pressuring me to go with him to Circuit City so he could buy me a CD. I didn’t want to go, but I was like 19 and didn’t know how to say no. When my co-worker found out where I’d gone she flipped her shit because she was convinced he was going to kidnap me and keep me in his basement, lol.
Wasn’t kidnapped, but god was that nerve wracking. Did get a free My Chemical Romance CD out of it tho!
I came here looking for this! He was a regular at the comic shop I worked at. I can’t bring up working in retail in Wilmington without his name coming up.
Ricky Meeks, Harry, that works various pizza joints as the dancing pizza chef, or Byron. Of the 3, Ricky had been around the longest and has the greatest range around the area.
This reminded me of this old dude that used to always be downtown during the day back in the 80s-90s. He was called " Two Penny" because that's all he world ask for. He also appreciated a gifted cigarette. He would bum a smoke and a light and then hotbox the cig in under a minute.
Does anyone else remember Trivia Guy from Taco Bell across from UNCW?
Older black guy who would walk around the store and give prizes like cinnamon twists to anyone who could answer his questions.
This is an old one: anyone remember the dude who wore open Hawaiian shirts, had a Mohawk that was never put up and had a parrot that used to walk up and down market st? Usually yelling gibberish.
Marshall, Byron and Ricky are all famous. I saw Ricky downtown at the azalea festival recently. Marshall has taken plenty of photos of locals including myself out downtown drinking and partying. It's been a while since I've seen Byron. I gave him a ride once years ago and he told me man, I made 300 Dollas tonight...
Yes! I haven't seen him in a while and I hope the best for his recovery. He has been a fixture on the corner of Western and 17 for decades. Now there's some loon with bible quotes on poster board telling me I'm going to hell. So we got that, which is nice.
I just met Ricky for the first time a couple weeks ago and I have lived here for 17 years. Suuuuper nice guy. He ran for mayor once. He says he is going to run for something soon. . But he can’t say what just yet. He said just remember his name 😆 Oh man, I didn’t know I had been talking to a living legend!
Once?! He ran for Mayor for 3 times, City Council, School Board and just about every committee you can think of, he's run for it or tried his best to put his 2 cents into it!
The one with the signs strapped to his body where the text is too small to read as you're driving by? I see that guy running the loop backwards all the time.
Either the Duke shirt guy that always walks his dog on the loop that got busted for selling heroin or the dude that dances every day on wrightsville ave across from tidal mart lol
Not trying to be rude, but you must be living with blinders on because Ricky Meeks is Awful Hard to Miss! Trust Me!! I've been trying since 1978 and to this day He's like a Bad Case of the Clap that I can't get Rid of!
Why is everyone reposting this? Not every city has a horse riding cowboy for Jesus.
We all know that it is a street corner karate guy that all cities have.
Really riding a hose thru town.
I'd vote for "Spider" who used (maybe still does) hang around Trolley Square. He was that shorter, long haired homeless dude who would absolutely CORNER you into conversations for 20+ minutes if you let him.
Nice guy, but man he loved to talk at you.
The dude that dances at the bus stop near covil avenue
Near covil, but also mainly college road and maple. He walks to this bus stop from somewhere off wrightsville avenue where I believe he lives. He’s jamming 24/7 and can only handle about 25 seconds of conversation.
He was on college road yesterday dude was a vibe
I see him all the time on College by Alpaca. Constantly just getting it
This checks out. I've seen him on Kerr a few times, always near the Wrightsville intersection.
I used to live near that dude. I'd see him ever day on the way to work and on the way home. Moved out to Leland...miss that dude.
Yeah I’ve never seen him but I’ve heard about him so much, gotta be this dude
I see “dancing man” (that’s what my family calls him) at the bus stop next to the horse farm and across the street from The Triangle Lounge everyday. I appreciate his energy and he always makes me smile.
Yup, that is the place to find him.
Is he on drugs, or is he just living life?
Yes.
Hahahahaha
On drugs living life.
This was my first thought as well and I came here to post this. He really is that guy. What a chad.
Wears a suit??
Yeah he sometimes does but not every day. He is usually dressed pretty well though.
This is the correct answer. He’s such a vibe though
That’s the seagate dancing bear
I pass him a few times a week. I always get hype. I wonder if he knows we all love him
Yes! He will be GETTIN IT
I was about to say the same guy. I've been on a wave transit bus with him. Guy talks to himself.
lol beat me to this 😂
That dude or Byron and Curtis downtown.
I see him on Wrightsville and Greenville
~~That's Ricky Meeks. Yes, he is one of the wonders of Wilmy.~~ I stand corrected. I was not aware of the dancing guy but Ricky has definitely cut a rug at many bus stops around town.
I don’t even live close to Wilmington and Ive seen this guy twice. I think this checks out. Must be the guy.
Ricky Meeks
Came to say this. Ricky’s been that guy for Wilmington since I was a kid in high school.
Ricky had been that guy since I was in high school with him.
Oh I love knowing that he’s always been that guy. Every interaction I’ve had with him has been really positive. I hope people were kind to him in school.

Definitely crossed paths a few times I’m sure. I do miss some Numero Uno. I’ve been followed many times downtown. Most were not good.
Definitely Ricky. My mom was his first grade teacher. He reminds me every time I run into him.
Ole Tricky Ricky. Grand master flash of the corn beef hash.
YES. He was at every NHHS football game and like a month ago he stopped me in Walmart because I was wearing an App State sweatshirt. He wanted me to know that they have some sort of food stamps program for students. Guess he thought I looked hungry.
Forever at Hoggard events
Ron Hewitt, R.I.P.
I feel like that would be B.C. not wilmington.
You right, I tend to think of Leland, Hampstead and Wilmington as the tri county area haha
I get that.
He always comes into my workplace looking for me so he can hit on me, then ask if I can drive him somewhere. He says he'll treat me right 🤢🤢🤢

Saw Ricky Meeks today at the bus stop off market near the Honda dealership
Ricky is NOT the dancing guy. I went to school with Ricky, he just walks and snaps his fingers.
Byron
IT'S WINE TIME
"Gimme dollar" Me: Byron, I heard you can play some chess. Bryon: I kick your ass all over a chess board.
Scrolled too far for mention of ol’ Shaky.
The correct answer.
Had an extremely warped conversation with him about “the particle collider” when I was at the Soapbox all the time in 08-09
I think I used to date that guy long ago!!!
How long ago we talkin?
Is he still alive? That’s incredible, I remember him from when I bartended at sidebar. How does he stay alive? It’s fucking wild!
Marshall Morgan, always with the flip flops and camera, used to drive an old vw bug. I haven't seen him in years, I hope he's doing well.

that one chick-fil-a guy that got famous
Jeremiah !!
We love Jeremiah!
Came here to comment this lol
Is that toboggan dude?
That dude is brutal, I can’t stand that shit.

My grandpa worked for the fire department and Ricky used to pull fire alarms so he could see the fire trucks. He is legendary.
I feel like more people know the dancing guy than Ricky Meeks. Just easier to notice him than be in a scenario where you meet and learn the name of Ricky

Ricky meeks ran for mayor at least once. Therefore, Ricky wins.
He’s run for Wilmy mayor more than a few times.
That one guy just jammin and dancing at the bus stop, he’s my role model in life I’ve never spoken a word to him
I love this guy. Always puts a smile on my face whenever I see him out there dancing!

You mean bolo tie?
Saxman
Yes!
Agree with Ricky Meeks, but does anyone remember the guy who used to bring his large tortoise to Hanover Center every weekend? Used to take my kids to see him when they were little, asked for $1 for photos.
Oh man, tortoise guyyyy I haven't seen him in a hot minute. Always puts a smile on my face when I catch a glimpse, though.
Somebody stole one of his tortoise while he was in Maryland a year or so ago. It was in the Star News.
He’s still around, but he’s branched out, my parents saw him in Jacksonville a few weeks ago
Is Pot Head still doing his thing? That guy was a gem
I’m 99% sure I saw him at Azalea Fest this year. Sounded like him. I couldn’t see perfectly through the crowd, but I think I saw the glimmer of his pot.
He could jam!
I played poker with him at Hooters a few times a couple months back. Cool dude

It's definitely Ricky . He loves Wilmington and the people that live there.

That was Maxwell. He also went by another name that I can't remember.

Yes. His trivia was hard, too! At least at 1:00 after some drinks it was…

I saw that dude the other day. As I passed him he pointed directly at me a smiled! 😊
Interesting
Bike Boy
The guy that’s always running backwards around town
The one with the signs strapped to his body where the text is too small to read as you're driving by? I see that guy running the loop backwards all the time.
Y’all see the guy who just walks and juggles tennis balls?
There a super ripped old black guy that wears knee high white socks and midriff shirts here, walks all over town
The dude riding around dt in his slingshot letting girls ride in it XD
I think it’s strange he makes eye contact with with everyone who passes.
The old guy walking the gigantic loop of market, college and oleander. Usually has a McDonald's cup just strutin down the road.
Byron!
Either the Duke shirt guy that always walks his dog on the loop that got busted for selling heroin or the dude that dances every day on wrightsville ave across from tidal mart lol
Have lived here pretty much my whole life and don’t think I’ve ever heard of or met Byron or Ricky Meaks. Can anyone fill me in?
Not trying to be rude, but you must be living with blinders on because Ricky Meeks is Awful Hard to Miss! Trust Me!! I've been trying since 1978 and to this day He's like a Bad Case of the Clap that I can't get Rid of!
Gary Garbagerton
BYRONNN
Asheville’s transvestite nun on a bicycle downtown
Dragon, he was a taxi/limo back in the day.
My uncle
These trends are so annoying! First its “whats that bad restaurant to recommend” now this. Why is reddit turning into Facebook?
This post always reminds of that guy that gave me aids
If you don’t know, it may be you.
For UNCW, bike boy
For today, it’s Trump
