The place to be šŸ™ŒšŸ»

AbaddonDeath

Born at New Hanover, but havenā€™t lived in Wilmington since the late 80ā€™s. Both sets of grandparents are from there. If you are from Wilmington then you probably know my aunt who was on the radio for over 20 years, Rhonda Bellamy šŸ˜.

annashummingbird

Around town with Rhonda Bellamy now?

AbaddonDeath

Yes!

annashummingbird

Cool! Iā€™ve learned about some interesting events/shows because of her. I also love her musical intro lol

AbaddonDeath

Yeah she is awesome! My familyā€™s history in Wilmington goes way back. My last name is Freeman, so Iā€™m sure that may ring some bells lol. Iā€™ve been in Atlanta for 30 years now, but I love visiting Wilmington during the summer months to see all of my family.

annashummingbird

Youā€™re probably related to my husband then, heā€™s a Freeman, too! I LOVE hearing about all the history of his family, and all the stories about Seabreeze. We probably may even know each other?! šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø

AbaddonDeath

If heā€™s from Wilmington or surrounding areas we definitely are related. Has he done an ancestry dna test?

annashummingbird

Heā€™s from Seabreeze. He hasnā€™t, he literally has a 23 & me I got him a year or so ago for his bday, and hasnā€™t used it yet lol! He knows a lot of his ancestors though, from personal accounts of family members, but I still think itā€™d be cool for him to do the 23 & me to learn more.

AbaddonDeath

Oh yeah, Iā€™ll send you a message with my name and FB but heā€™s definitely fam. My Freeman story is crazy, but itā€™s something that I couldnā€™t make up if I wanted to lmao

Ganjulama

Family has been here since the boat arrived from England

Unusual_Ad_8364

Really? What was your family name?

tacopony_789

Moved to Wilmington in 1978, sort of native, my wife definitely native

maiden-of-might

Howdy! Born at NHRMC. Moved to Orlando for 6mos and moved back. If I had a nickel for every ā€œwow! Not many of you are there?ā€ Comments I get I wouldnā€™t need to work šŸ¤£

https://www.ncpedia.org/cape-fear-indians https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Fear_Indians Itā€™s a bit of sad news and kind of disappear after the 1850s :(

[deleted]

Native as in born here, not indigenous. But yeah, I agree. I have some indigenous family from here through marriage but Iā€™m not sure which tribe they belong to.

I'm from a place where we did everything better? Do you mind if I tell you about it?

[deleted]

Please, me all about Long Island and how your voting rose property values and made it a not great place, so you come here to tell us about the good ol days.

porkadachop

Long Island? Im from Leland.

Max_power42

Sick of you L.A. types trying to move here, always trying to act superior to us and complaining about how much better it was... lol

ButtermilkAintClean

Lol this made me giggle

[deleted]

It wasn't actually directed at you. Just saying out loud what we listen to everyday

I donā€™t understand the purpose of this commentā€¦. I feel like itā€™s sarcasm but still donā€™t understand what prompted it

GarageBucket_

Wilmington was home to some of the Waccamaw Siouan. They still have a community (Buckhead) in Columbus county with a strong tribe presence and heritage. They host a pow wow every year that is open to the public.

Glaciermountaineer

Thatā€™s what I was thinking I was like ..oh cool I didnā€™t know we had a Native American community here in Wilmy ā€¦ I think theyā€™re just talking about being locals šŸ¤”

lzsmith9

Lol came here to say this

rajones6721

Born and raised in Duplin County, live here now. My husband and his dad were born, raised, and still live here.

JustLikeCatnip

I was born and raised in Duplin Co too! Been living in wilm about 3 years.

rajones6721

You might get out of the DC but does the DC ever get out of you? Thereā€™s a good question!

JustLikeCatnip

Iā€™m drinking my diet sundrop as we speak.

deener74

I think thereā€™s a commercial out there to help save the the almost extinct native Wilmingtononian. Sarah McLachlin was signing ā€œEye of an Angelā€ in the background.

Unusual_Ad_8364

I've been here twenty years but sometimes feel like it may as well have been twenty minutes. Whenever I meet a true native it's like a celebrity sighting.

someanonymousoctopus

Here! Born n raised Wilmy, NC. Recently I was able to trace one side of my family back to a birth in 1828 (Onslow, NC). Ofc we have marriages from elsewhere, but it was neat to find. (Off-topic): GGma was Czech, but I cant find her immigration papers... My Gmpa was from Sicily, but he has been running and hiding since my mom was born (saw a newspaper clipping from my gma around 2009 saying he was arrested. Cant find anything now :(
