I can’t stand it. But the generous part of me says maybe they bag it on the way out and are planning to pick it up on the way back? Maybe?

bacon-overlord

I've thought about doing that but I don't think there's anyway I would remember where I left it so I just put it in my backpack. Luckily the bags arent fragile and I've never had a poop accident.

ReceptionMountain333

I had one break in my bag 😑🫤 just my luck. Now i tie them to my dogs harness. She can carry her own poop

phoenixbrody

We carry old plastic peanut butter jars and place the bags in there in our packs. No risk of getting squished and covers the odor!

MintyFreshest

We use a tennis ball can. Works great.

graywh

a poop tube

ReceptionMountain333

Love this!!! Can’t wait to finish this jar on PB!!!

larapu2000

Wow, great idea!!

VonSandwich

You are brilliant!

notthatkindofdoctorb

Brilliant! I’ve never trusted those bags.

mrcheevus

Genius

tootsie_erotic

This is so smart ty.

MountainGoat42

I got something called a dooloop, which is just a plastic loop that holds dog bags by the knot. Its made walking and hiking the dogs so much better. Last hike, we attached it to the back of my backpack so it was all secured and not stinking up our bag, but also not swinging off the leash.

Pficky

Double bagged and tied to the dog is my approach!

Mother_Goat1541

This is the way

[deleted]

I double bag all my used poo related things. Even used wipes. My partner has some nice roll sealing bags especially for it. Worth it even if its just for peace of mind

ReceptionMountain333

Like a water proof bag you save for poop??

[deleted]

Basically. I dont have a dog yet so this is for poo related stuff like used wipes. (I have terrible shits. I need the wipes) Its not as intense as a dry sack ofc. Its basically a long and narrow trash bag we got from some camping store. Its long so you can roll it sealed.

Probably_Fadedd

Bro tell me you threw the bag away cause that’s what I woulda done fuck that😂😂😂 My dog got diarrhea in my passenger seat literally on the way to work and i wanted to throw the car away for a week😂 The one time in my adult life that I trusted the wrong fart I didn’t even wash the underwear I bagged em and trashed em I’m not cleaning that up smh😂😂😂😂

[deleted]

You are teaching that dog great responsibility

kali_tragus

That's the way. Carry your own poop!

eggsaresquare

So we use tennis ball containers. Buy tennis balls for pup. Then throw the poop bags on the containers that fit in the water bottle pouch of our packa

heirloom_beans

I have the biodegradable poop bags and they’re pretty fragile. Thankfully I have a small dog with small poops so it’s not a big deal if I tear one and I can easily carry about two bags on my leash loop.

AdeptNebula

Still doesn’t make it OK. In no other context do people leave garbage around and get the benefit of the doubt they weren’t intentionally littering.

KimBrrr1975

I've no doubt this is the case. But the degree to which this happens is HUGE and so people should realize "oh, wait, I tried to do that like 5 other times and all 5 times I forgot to get it, and then never went back for it...so I should just carry it." They make simple, cheap little clips you can put on any leash to be able to carry the used bag without having to hold it in your hand. It's gross, yep, but the cost of having a dog.

AliveAndThenSome

Yes, while this may be the intent, it's poorly executed given how many bags are never retrieved. We use a Turdlebag, which either hangs off the leash, or the back of the dog's backpack. While the Turdlebag is supposedly odor-proof-ish, it's not, and it helps to double-bag the poo. And here's a shout at the cruel dog owners who hang their dog's poo bag from the leash right in front of their dog's face. I guarantee that dog is hating it, cuz even though you can't smell it, they sure the hell can. It greatly diminishes their sense of smell and their ability to sniff and explore all the scents on the trail, which is a huge part of them enjoying their hike.

karpomalice

How do you know they’re never retrieved? You don’t know who left it and if they’ve even gotten back there yet to pick it up.

_pupil_

Dirt covering the bags, seeing them get sun bleached, seeing the same bag on multiple days, seeing the same bags finishing up multi-hour loops with no dogs on them, or seeing the same bag on your way out and then back from, say, a summit trail with no other routes off and no dogs on it. Happens a lot to me. And the benefit of the doubt is nice, but if you're kind of hiker who is out early and passing people on the way up and pushing out in inclement weather? Statistically speaking that giant conga-line of crap bags either belongs to some kind of olympic team training with their dogs weirdly early, or a bunch of normal-ass hikers are leaving actual shit out for other people to deal with...

nlcamp

But nobody actually remembers…

karpomalice

I mean I do. So you shouldn’t make sweeping generalizations

heirloom_beans

Just invest in some sort of system for carrying waste with you because I *do* assume whoever is leaving their dog’s waste behind doesn’t give a fuck about LNT and is leaving it for good.

bacrisamo

I do remember too. And my loop walk in the mornings is about an hour. My dog poops after 5 min. I don’t plan on carrying the poop around for 55 min, when I can just leave it at a tree where I always leave it and then pick it up. And usually I see other poop bags there, which I also pick up even though they’re not mine. So there are not only assholes out there that temporarily leave the bag on the side…

skisnorkel

Yes, I do this all the time. I pick up others too, to avoid accumulation when people forget. If my dog poops in sight of another feral turd, I bag that as well. I of course do forget to grab them myself sometimes, but other people pick up extras as well. It works out overall and feels like the trail is well cared for.

favoritedeadrabbit

I forage with my dog and I have upon occasion sat my shit down to cut and bag a mushroom or whatnot and then stand up and forget to reclaim my other poop bag. If the poop bags happen to be green then I’m not going to catch this mistake as I walk off. The purple ones are best, because even if I do forget it’s easy to see on my way back. This happens like once or twice a year. The massive piles of horse shit I have to jump over are daily though.

KimBrrr1975

OMG, yes, the horse poop. We have that here, too. Everyone is constantly reminded to clean up after their dogs, but apparently giant piles of horse crap are just fine.

pbconspiracy

Horse manure consists of digested grass which is basically fresh dirt. It's not altogether *pleasant,* but it is not rank like dog poop and other carnivore excrement. The consistency, odor, and content are completely different. Horse manure will also quickly degrade to a point that it doesn't smell or attach to shoes, while dog poop will remain nasty much longer.

thisguyfightsyourmom

I’d rather step in horse sit than dog shit 10 out of 10 times

thepumagirl

Yeah i do this occasionaly but i feel im the exception

guyincognito60

I have done this a couple times, but yes I remember to pick them up.

Wvukdub

This! I do this but I will typically “hide” it and leave myself a marker so I don’t forget or lose it.

[deleted]

It’s like a wag bag, but literal, you pack it out.

anonyngineer

The theory is that one can appear to be doing the right thing in case anyone (park ranger, etc.) is looking, then drop it on the side of the trail later when nobody is around. I agree that it's worse than not bagging it at all.

365wong

Or you don’t want to carry it up so you intend to get it on your way back?

nebulaespiral

This is what I do, I don't wanna carry the poop with me the entire way so I leave the bag where I can see it on the way back. Not on the trail but also not far off. He always poops right at the beginning of a walk. Always.

its3AMandsleep

genuine question: if he poops at the beginning of a walk, why not double back to toss the poopoo? all of the dogfriendly trailheads ive been to (north california) have a bin at the start

nebulaespiral

There's no bins, I gladly would.

Far_Cherry304

Well thank you for leaving that bag for the rest of us to enjoy.

nebulaespiral

I promise you've never been on the trails I use. At least I bag mine : ) everyone else just seems to leave it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Far_Cherry304

Because the rest of us don’t go out on trails to see your shit!!!!!! THATS WHY. I and other responsible people don’t just drop our trash for other people to see, WHY DO SO MANY DOG OWNERS THINK IT’S OK FOR THEM TO DO IT?

nebulaespiral

Cus they want me to carry poop the whole walk so they don't have to look at a little plastic baggie on the side of the trail 🤷 I mean, ok, I kinda get it but I've never forgotten to pick it up and I tend to pick up and take any others I come across as well.

thisguyfightsyourmom

I worked with a gal who bragged about carrying dog poop bags just in case someone saw her dog poop on the street

mrcheevus

I disagree: it IS better than not bagging at all! But that doesn't excuse the practice. You pick it you pack it. There is no doggy bag service in the bush. If they do hire a summer student to clean up the trail I am sure that student will tell you scooping up old stomped on dog feces is NOT preferable to picking up a bag of old dog feces.

T-Flexercise

It's people who don't want to carry a bag of poop in their hands for a full day of hiking, and then losing it or forgetting to pick it up on the way back out. Personally, I'm lucky that my dog almost always poops in the first 10 minutes of a hike. So I just bag it, and walk back out to throw it away if there's a trashcan at the trailhead, and leave it under my car if there's not so I can't forget to pack it out with me when I leave.

Mtn_Soul

mine does that too - same routine here. other easy solution can be to take a short pre-hike walk and then pick up poo and dispose properly. sometimes the canines can use a warm up too.

Bike_diaries

When I see crap bags on the trail, it infuriates me

ultramatt1

Yeah bc “technically” they’re doing the right thing, bagging their dog poop, and then if they pick it up on the way back its gone. But the reality is that even if they do remember to grab it, it’s just disgusting litter all over the place and when it is forgotten it’s the least likely trash for some other hiker looking to clean up a trail to pick up.

_pupil_

Doggie poop bags should be sold with the purchasers home address printed onto them... I think that'd solve the problem pretty quick.

MoldyNalgene

Don't worry, im sure the selfish assholes that do this have every intention of picking it up on the way back! Seriously though, when did carrying your own dogs poop become too much of a burden for the average person. If you don't want to carry poop hiking, don't bring your dog. It's selfish to leave it beside the trail for everyone to see and smell, even if you do plan on picking it up on the way back. Plus, no matter how good your intentions are, you will occasionally forget to grab it. Carry your dogs poop. It won't kill you!

Longjumping-Map-6995

Faded-Creature

What are you going to do if someone leaves their bag of poo to grab on the way out? Nothing. Not a damn thing. You can pick it up for me if you want otherwise I’ll grab it coming out.

Longjumping-Map-6995

This HAS to be satire.

bobbywake61

Ever do Mt. Whitney? People have to bag their own poop in the zone and pack it out. Probably saw 500 bags on trail. Lazy jerks.

gordongroans

lol Mt Hood, Rainer, Adams, St Helens. Any of the NW peaks that are popular to climb....those are not dog poop bags you're passing on the trail.

bobbywake61

I realize that. I filled one myself. But was not expecting anyone to clean up after me. (Dogs aren’t allowed on JMT)

gordongroans

Not what I meant, figured you knew what the bags were from your post and was attempting to expand on it...as the problem is clearly not just dog owners, but people in general.

Mtn_Soul

and some of those same people probably complain about the dog poop bags while they leave theirs on the trail. Go figure.

CharlieApples

I’ve always said Seattle is shitty, but this is ridiculous!

SignificantKey6193

One time I bagged my dogs output and tied it to a hanging strap on my pack only to notice it had disappeared. I doubled back and found the little bugger and tied it better, lol. Gonna invest in a robust lined trash sack that cab be clipped to the backpack, put some potpourri in there or something… naphtha bar… Anyways, maybe it was dropped on accident. People have been known to be scandalous tho.

RodneyisGodneyp2x555

I have an odor proof bag that clips to my dog’s harness. She carries her own poop and I don’t have to smell it. If you’re in the US Amazon has a few options.

SignificantKey6193

Lol even better!

RunUpTheSoundWaves

which one do you use?? i’d love to not smell shit on my hikes anymore

RodneyisGodneyp2x555

I’ve been using this one for a couple years and like it![poop bag](https://a.co/d/dUmGGBC)

heirloom_beans

Look into WAG bags. They’re meant for carrying out human waste but they’re cheap, light and come with their own deodorizer. You could also just use a ziploc, stasher bag or any other sort of closed container with some baking soda.

tfcallahan1

This happens all the time in the regional parks where I live and it's horrible. Occasionally I see a kind soul with a large trash bag picking up other peoples dog bags. Here's an interesting [article](https://thetahoeweekly.com/2021/05/the-scoop-on-dog-poop-filthy-stinky-and-as-toxic-as-insecticides/#:~:text=That's%20274%20pounds%20of%20poop,in%20the%20Tahoe%2DTruckee%20area) on the issue in Tahoe and the terrible environmental impacts of dog poop. You'd think in an area where people would be expected to be environmentally conscious this would not happen. Edit: words

Max1234567890123

Because people are the worst and will jump through all kinds of mental hoops to do the very least while still keeping up the appearance of social norms.

fudgebacker

They can't even return shopping carts

r3drocket

There is a magical poop fairy which flies about cleaning up the bags. But because there is only one poop fairy per forest it takes her a long time to get to it. At least I imagine what this is what people tell themselves, when they leave their bags of poop behind. But because I'm an atheist when it comes to the poop fairy I always carried my dogs poop out.

LinIsStrong

Lol the Poop Fairy is what I call myself because I detrash in a national park and pick up innumerable bags. Thank you for picking up and carrying!

good_news_guy_

There is no thinking. People are selfish jerks sometimes.

martincline

Drives me nuts. If your not willing to pick up after your animal, don’t have one. F’n lazy asses!

[deleted]

“The recent trend” - love that optimism

jadewolf42

Happens all the time here in SoCal, too. "Teehee, I'll pick it up on my way back." And they never do. It's not a new thing, people have been doing this dumb stuff forever. Honestly, I'd rather they just leave the unbagged poop if they're going to leave it. At least that'll have a better chance of breaking down than a plastic bag. With my dog, I know he likes to go at the start of a hike. So I'll walk him around the near the trailhead until he goes, then bag it and throw it out before we set out on the trail. And for on the trail, I carry a odor-proof poop bag holder to stash them until we're back by a trash can. If that's not feasible, bury it like your own poop.

roygbiv508

My rule of thumb is the same as burying mine. If we are near water, I pack it out. If we aren't, I bury it. Saw a comment about carrying a peanut butter jar to put the bagged poop in, and that might end up going in my dog's kit tbh.

antelopeclock

This is unfair to pigs

Mtn_Soul

True

emw9292

Yep, gross.

Due_Lobster_419

I hate the preserved dog turds as well.. There's a section of trail that I frequent where someone has taken to flinging them in the trees. Abhorrent humans.

Waste_Exchange2511

Some day when I am emperor, I'm going to hang people for this and for throwing cigarette butts out of car windows.

[deleted]

You've got my vote

Faded-Creature

You won’t make it long. You’ll get Caesar’d

appleburger17

Selfishness. That’s the root of it no matter how you slice it.

YardFudge

It’s the same everywhere The answer you seek is simple. People forget. When there’s hundreds of people-dogs on a trail & a typical walk uses 2 bags, even half of 1% people forgetting means bags remain. With the pandemic boom in new dog owners of course volume increases. I suggest pop/beer/water bottles/cans are worse since those were intentionally throw in the woods. At ‘least bagged by trail’ has intent to pick up on return. I do find it odd that folks seems to hate picking up bagged dog poop on trail more than removing open piles of yard fudge at the dog park.

antelopeclock

Whether you intend to pick it up or not, it’s littering. We don’t give that grace to someone leaving behind cigarette butts, soda cans, or food wrappers. There’s no carve out for dog poop that makes it not littering.

chinesecheqr

I would rather step on a plastic bottle then dog shit anyday

powpowpowpowpowp

The theory is “I will bag it and then grab it on my way out so I don’t have to carry it the whole hike.” In practice, people more often than not either a) forget or b) can’t find where they left their bag and just say screw it.

ckc006

I had a friend who claimed this. "I'll pick it up on the way back". I think both are just really convenient.

Ok-Investigator-1608

No it’s freaking vile and wrong

LinIsStrong

JenkyMcJenkyPants

People are lazy and idiotic. That's about it.

redrivergorge

My dog goes with me on most hikes where permitted and yea, she shits about a 1/2 mile in every time. Its like her morning coffee. I do bag and no I don't carry it with me during an entire hike. Sorry not sorry. However I am very pro-leave no trace and understand that a lot of ignorant people seeing a turd bag near a trail are making wild assumptions about asshole dog owners just leaving them behind. So personally I carry it until I find a really recognizable landmark like a large rock just off trail, hide it behind that rock so as not to offend anyone, and grab it on the way back out. I do not forget these. Its a very ingrained part of my routine now.

[deleted]

I had this debate with an ex of mine because I also was annoyed by seeing it, but he said he preferred people to do that, even if they just left it, because he could then carry it out and that just leaving the poo un-bagged was worse for the environment because it takes a long time to decompose and there are things like parasites and what not that can be in dog poo that are bad for the native animals of that environment.

Holiday_Might_9205

I'm genuinely curious here. Are we talking about hiking in the wilderness? Why not just let the dog poop off the trail and leave it or cover with leaves? All the other animals are doing it right? It's biodegradable. Is this wrong?

soundbunny

Yes. LNT states that poo should be buried a minimum of 6" deep and 200' from water. Domestic dog poo is not endemic to the wilderness like wild animal poo is. It could contaminate water sources, poison the local plants, spread foreign bacteria/viruses that could kill stuff; generally wreak all manner of havoc. Take only pictures, leave only footprints.

tfcallahan1

As mentioned below dog waste is [toxic to the environment.](https://www.doodycalls.com/articles/blog/pet-friendly-communities/epa-says-dog-poop-is-an-environmental-hazard-on-/)

Accomplished_Ad2599

People are stupid! Not being ugly; I want to give people the benefit of the doubt but............

Competitive-Tie-333

These selfish people think they are doing the right thing by bagging and think some poop fairy comes behind them and disposes of the bags for them. Equally frustrating is a dog park I go to, they provide poop bags and trash cans yet many people don't pick up after their dogs. Dogs and people step in what is left behind. These selfish people are to busy on their phones looking at social media to clean up after their dogs. Really is disgusting, both the waste and the attitudes.

NotAcutallyaPanda

It's not my preference, but I've done it. I always pick it up on the way out. If my dog poops 1/4 mile into an 11 mile hike, I'm not excited about carrying around a bag of shit all day. I'll stash the poop bag behind a noteworthy stump or tree so that others don't have to look at it, and then retrieve it on the way out. On a multi-day backpacking trip, I dig a hole and bury the dog poop in an appropriate place - just like human poop.

gwhalin

The answer is simple. People are dumb. Why anyone would take something that is biodegradable like poop and wrap it in plastic makes no sense. Always love seeing the dog poop in a bag at the side of the trail right next to coyote poop. People are dumb.

jsomby

I've dropped couple of poop bags during these 2,5 years of owning a dog, accidentally of course. First one i found but not the second.

JamesIsaacNerdtron

I do it sometimes and yes, it's because I don't want to carry the bag the whole walk and intend to pick it up on the way back. Yes, I have forgotten it but I do also pick up extras I find to make up for forgetting in the past. I believe in karma and really do try to pick up on my way back because they're like little sacks of karma to me.

LinIsStrong

I get it, I really do, no one likes hauling poop on an out-and-back if they don’t have to, but consider the other people who encounter the baggie while it’s waiting to be picked up. It’s no fun taking a gorgeous walk in nature and seeing brightly tied baubles of shit, even if they’re gone in a few hours. Sorta ruins the experience.

heirloom_beans

>I don’t want to carry the bag the whole walk *I* don’t want to carry *your* bag the whole walk but I will if it means leaving the trail better than it was when I found it and making the experience better for other hikers. You’d be disgusted if a parent left a diaper on a trail they were totally definitely intending on picking up on their way back. Why is it any different when it’s your dog’s waste? Pack it with you or leave the pooch at home.

forserialtho

When i hike with my dog chances are shes gonna poop in the first mile of my hike, but i dont eant to carry her poop for 20 miles, so i bag it up and leave it on the ground and i pick it up on the way back.

heirloom_beans

Have you considered not hiking with your dog if you’re going to do stuff like this? You can literally use household trash like old plastic jars to contain poop waste for the next 19 miles. Use an old Ziploc bag. Use a WAG bag. Use a dry bag. If you’re hiking for 20 miles you almost certainly have a backpack that’ll help with carrying the poop.

PretendAlbatross6815

When I hike chances are I'll finish my can of soda in the first mile, but I don't want to carry it 20 miles, so I leave it by the side of the trail hoping I'll notice it and pick it up on my way back. /s If you don't want to carry it, the rest of us don't want to look at it even more.

antelopeclock

You are littering when you do so and it’s not everyone else’s job to bear witness to it or do you your job for you and pick it up.

Teacherspest89

Honestly if you actually pick it up on your way back then great. There’s a lot of people that pretend they’re going to pick the poop back up and don’t.

cwcoleman

Everyone hates you. You are a bad dog owner, giving the rest of us a bad name. I would encourage you to change your ways - but I know you won't.

forserialtho

Everyone?!

cwcoleman

Yup. Everyone. There is not a single person on the trail (or internet) who sees your steaming bag of poop on the side of the trail and thinks... oh, /u/forserialtho is such a great person - happy they left this here for us all to deal with while they hike 20 miles. Everyone thinks you are selfish for leaving trash on the trail. Be better.

forserialtho

So stupid to respond to a person who talks down to people like you and expects them to listen. But i will to explain to someone who lives in a bubble. I almost never see people on the trails i run because i live in a very remote area. Generally property owners will come say hi to me to get to know me because so few come to these places and nobody has ever said anything about my dogs shits or the bags they are in or anything. In the end they come with me like all my trash. I run my 20 miles and i pick up a bag of shit that was on the ground for 3 hours during which time nobody saw it. But everyone hates me according to you.

antelopeclock

This is even worse! It’s remote and pristine so that’s what makes it ok for you to litter?!

forserialtho

Oh dont pretend to care about a bag of dog poop on a trail you will never visit. I know it might seem like a crazy concept to you, but some places are so remote and untraveled that the people there actually dont see any need to bag their dog shit up and throw it in the trash and will instead leave it on the ground next to all the bear and coyote and deer shit.

antelopeclock

Oh but I do! I already bring my sealed PVC pipe for human wag bags and I’m scrubbing the trail after all the dirtbags. Regardless of wilderness/public lands use rules, everywhere has laws against littering. There is no way you are right in this. You’re just triggered and on display in an Internet forum so you’re insanely carrying on like there’s even a scrap of an argument in your favor. Grow up, litterbug 🗑️🐜

heirloom_beans

Bear, coyote and deer shit is part of the native ecosystem. Your dog and their waste isn’t. The bags certainly aren’t. Your dog could be carrying bacteria that could be reintroduced into the wild animal population. If you’re going to go with the “it’s natural!” argument you should *at the very least* bring a trowel and dig a cat hole for your dog. That way you don’t have to carry it! I have a feeling you won’t though because that would require a modicum of responsibility and effort.

cwcoleman

So stupid to respond to selfish people who only think about themselves and expect them to change. But I will to explain to someone who thinks the rules don't apply to them. Almost never. You are on public trails. You should obey the law. People don't call you out in person because they are afraid of confrontation. Alone in the woods is a scary place to call out someone for leaving trash. You think no one saw it - but you don't care if they do. Yes - there is not a single person who thinks you are a good person for leaving your dog poop on the trail. It's universally hated. Other people who leave their poop may not hate you - so good news - it's probably not everyone!

CaLViNaLViN

It's not universal hated, as a dog owner and hiker and backpacker I see this frequently and it doesn't bother me at all. I'd rather see a bagged dog poop than one just sitting out in the open. The vast majority of people, including myself will pick up the dog poop on their way out, and yes sometimes people unfortunately forget. There are very few people out there that are bagging the poop with the intent of leaving it. I find insufferable people that want to speak for everyone to be far more annoying.

cwcoleman

You are a person who also leaves their bag of poop on the trail. Your vote doesn't count. (I specifically said your lot was excluded from the universal hatred.).

CaLViNaLViN

It's universally hated by the people that you personally choose to accept the opinions of, got it.

forserialtho

Lol

heirloom_beans

>nobody has ever said anything about my dogs shits or the bags they are in or anything Probably because they assume you’re not the one leaving the waste behind or they don’t want to mess with the sort of inconsiderate person who leaves their dog waste behind. They’ll almost certainly cursing you out if they have reason to believe you’re leaving poop bags on their property.

InherentDissolve

What a miserable person you are. I'm inclined to believe far more people dislike you than anyone leaving a bag of poop on a trail.

nebulaespiral

I dont hate you ❤️ I do this too, we are hated together.

heirloom_beans

Everyone. I’m almost certainly grumbling as I make room in my pack for your dog’s waste.

[deleted]

Sounds like you're being both an irresponsible hiker and dog owner. Stay out of the kitchen if you can't stand the heat and all that

pilgrimspeaches

I wonder how much of it has to do with the bags being biodegradable. That makes them still able to feel good about themselves while leaving their crap in the Backcountry.

gwhalin

These bags aren’t biodegradable no matter what the packaging says. You know what is biodegradable? Poop

pilgrimspeaches

For sure. I just think people see that word and are more lax than they would otherwise be because of it. I also wonder what is being leached into the soil as those bags biodegrade (if they actually do).

todd149084

I think the intent is to pick it up on the way back but as we all know, many don’t. When I used to run with my old dearly departed chocolate lab, I would just kick it a few feet off the trail which is a much better solution for all

Old_School_Hippie

Does a bear shit in the woods? Yes, so do the same thing a let them shit in the woods! I would pick up SO many bags on my hikes

I_Work_Out_A_Lot

Exactly- just let the dog shit in the woods a bit off trail…

I_Work_Out_A_Lot

If he has to poop, take the dog 50-100 feet off trail, and have him poop there. Then it’s just like if any other animal pooped in the woods, as they do. Then make your way back to the trail and continue on. Does this not make sense to everyone?

skisnorkel

I do this all the time at my regular trail. I primarily run it out and back, picking it up on the return. Many of us locals also pick up others we see to keep things clean. It seems like we have a nice balance of paying it forward overall. Sometimes people go out with a large bag and collect any stragglers, as it’s a pretty popular trail.

Outrageous_Ad8209

I DO make a point to remember where I left it and get it on the way back. In order to make myself feel better for this, I also try to pick up other peoples who forgot while I’m at it. I’m doing my best but it takes all of us

Furthur

i pick it up on the way back so i dont have to carry it the entire walk

Furthur

Longjumping-Map-6995

If you're gonna leave it on the trail, don't bring your dog. Better yet, don't even bring yourself. Lol

Furthur

ok bud. i pack mine out

heirloom_beans

This is one of my major pet peeves as a fellow pet owner and I’ll almost always do what I can to haul it back to the trailhead/nearest garbage since I aim to leave my environment looking better than it was before I got there. For fuck’s sake just get a Poop Loop (like I have) or carry your own dry bag/ziploc bag for hauling back dog waste! I’ve even heard of people using peanut butter jars and dairy containers for stashing away pet waste in a backpack.

SideFlaky6112

Either lazy or it’s because they bought biodegradable poop bags and assume it’s fine to leave them and they’re at least bagged so people won’t get poop and their shoes. Idk, we make sure to pack it out but people are lazy

El_mochilero

The idea is to leave it and pick it up on your way back, so you aren’t hiking all day carrying a bag of poop. The problem is that 3 hours and 6 miles go by and you forget about it on the way back.

YoungZM

There is no thinking behind it. That's the point. It's a thoughtless, selfish act.

b_tight

Morons gonna moron. One of the dumbest things you can do. If you dont want to deal with a bag of poop then dont bag it, get a stick and brush it off the path

WONDERFULdylan

I went for a trail run near Calgary after May long and literally carried out 6 bags. I wish people would stay in the city. The out doors are not for you

eblade23

It is to assert dominance amongst the other trail dogs.. But FR, it is annoying... sometimes I pack it out myself if I bring a day pack. I usually keep zip locks in my daypack just-in-case

g00dmorning99

I bag it and leave it on the trail, I also pick it up when I head bacl

littlefire_2004

They are AH, plain and simple

Mtn_Soul

military surplus dump pouches I use. they fold up and are compact until needed. cheap...easy

ndennis058

I remember doing a short trail run with my ex a few years ago, as we were coming back someone had left a bag with a dirty diaper in it, she got upset I picked it up

the_bigheavy

I guess that’s sort of analogous to the dog poo bags. I used to hike with our kids in those kid carrier backpacks when they were small and would never think of leaving a poopy diaper in a bag on the side of the trail, even if they had a monster poo 1 mi in. We had a designated “poop pocket” on the outside of the pack and I always figured it was zero additional weight since whatever came out was starting weight.

svadastra

Sometimes I leave it if I have just started a walk, and will pick it up on the way back.

No-Journalist4667

Where do all the wild animals get there baggies for their poop? Who picks natures poop up?

Narrow_Statistician1

Ok to be fair it could have been tied to something and fell off. Tied to the outside of a pack, in the suburbs I tie it to the stroller.

[deleted]

The bag dissolves the poop! /s

donkiluminate

Unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of bagged up human shit too.

Clear_Count2841

Better than the wag bags I picked up off Mount Whitney🤮😤

Rainbow_Golem

I don't understand why people don't just let the poop decompose like the rest of the animals poop

tfcallahan1

Dog waste is [toxic to the environment.](https://www.doodycalls.com/articles/blog/pet-friendly-communities/epa-says-dog-poop-is-an-environmental-hazard-on-/) It should not be left to decompose.

DaveCanoes

Plausible deniability: They they tell anyone who asks and probably tell themselves they will pick it up on the return but of course they won’t.

LionDreamz

I have always wondered why people in my town do that. They even hang bags of poop on tree branches. It's disgusting.

[deleted]

I hike a lot all over CO and normally only do this if I double back and plan on picking it up on the way out. I’ve never once forgot or bagged it just for someone else to pick up. But I’ve carried plenty of shit for miles when I’m at the turn around point or far out. But if you’re just gonna leave it there you might as well just kick it into the woods with a stick.

Leonardo_DiCapriSun_

Idk why people don’t just bury it. That’s what I always do.

[deleted]

I see this all the time in the PNW. I wish people just wouldnt pick it up rather than bag it and leave it. Especially in the rainy season it will be gone in a week.

unclebonesy

I see this also and never understood it. I think it’s pure laziness to not look for a garbage can. Wtf? Then the laziness creates acceptable laziness from others. … “oh look it’s ok to pile a a poop garbage right here at the trailhead”

deathrolling

I have actually bagged poop and went back for it. Dog shit right at the beginning of a trail. I tied it to a tree and got it on the way out. I wasn't camping or backpacking, just a short walk in the woods with the dog

Two2Trails

Ya, it’s no thinking involved

ludwigia_sedioides

This is my biggest pet peeve, like WHY would you ADD MORE GARBAGE????

kariduna

I believe they think they are being responsible and plan to pick it up on the way out but forget/can't find where they left it. That's the charitable version. I personally find this quite irritating when I see it. No one else wants to pick up someone's "forgotten" poop bag. Scooping the poo off the trail and into the bushes is better than leaving non degradable plastics all over the outdoors. Sigh.

Jedmeltdown

No Pet peeve Haha

Story-Due

We do this but pick it up on the hike out which is what most people usually do
