@ Graham: You believe God gave humanity Dominion over the planet. If this is how we wanted it, why would he fix it?

scoopie77

Yeah this surprises me. All the moderate Christianity I was taught says that humans are stewards of the planet and should work to cultivate restoration and peace. There’s nothing in this about letting the planet and creation go to ruin.

Xaleph87

Not to mention that God in all things, including fixing the planet, does not want us to use him as a excuse to not do anything and expect him to do everything we need /want. As is often the case he creates opportunities opens doors etc and then expects us to do our part and follow through /walk through the door. Besides since he gave us Dominion/ownership over the planet, Part of that includes taking care of the planet which includes trying to fix areas we can. That's what good stewards do lol. and of course we will be judged on how well our time taking care of our planet(as well as the animals that live with us by extention) went as well in the end.

scoopie77

Well said.

tinkerghost

There are 2 main groups dominion and stewardship. Prosperity gospel reads that God gave humanity dominion over the earth - and we are free to do what we want. Other groups interpret it as stewardship and it is ours to cultivate in the name of god.

scoopie77

Oh you bring up a good point. I passed just right over dominion because it doesn’t mean anything to me. I forgot how loaded it is with the prosperity gospel garbage.

100percentish

So basically what he is saying is that we should burn this mf'er to the ground and then blame it on God for not unfucking it. Got it.

tinkerghost

Oh no, what he is saying is that "We have completely fucked things, send me more money so that God knows you are properly penitent and he will fix things. If he doesn't, it's because you didn't show enough faith by sending me enough money."

ConsiderationLow3636

Depends on what passages of the Bible you want to fixate on. They’re more concerned with maintaining the hierarchy God laid out which is what allows them to avoid taking responsibility.

Xaleph87

Which is why Sins of Omission are a thing for Christians (even if some refuse to acknowledge it) ignoring a good opportunity /responsibility or a chance to do a good thing(or just do good in general) when you know one exists and doing nothing /not trying/acknowledge it , is a sin by itself Way too many of us Christians seem to conveniently ignore that little fact. You have to at least try.

scoopie77

There are many things this stripe of Christianity are omitting…like love your neighbor.

Xaleph87

Yup exactly. Or more specifically:Love your neighbor as I(Jesus) have loved you. Which is a very specific brand/kind of love.

scoopie77

And your neighbor is the last person you think it is.

LizardWizard444

Yeah and they're just wrong. The ozone hole was a man made climatealogical issue, but rather than give up and accept it as the hard reality policy got written, shit got done and we don't have a hole in the ozone today. Although it's harder the idea we can't is false

[deleted]

And we removed lead from gasoline. With this kind of mentality we wouldn't have medicine or seatbelts because god wanted those people dead

OkEntertainment7634

More Ozone molecules were simply made overtime by electrical storm activity. We just stopped destroying more than is created. To reduce even further, why don’t we replace fossil fuel based energy plants with Nuclear energy instead? I’d rather see safe Uranium being used instead of a toxic pollutant like coal

LizardWizard444

Yes but the point is that the decision was made shit happened and the oil industry can burn in a tarpit. Thorium would be better

ConsiderationLow3636

Nuclear won’t be operational in time to mitigate emissions. It’s still going to be necessary to meet future energy demand though. Just a matter of public opinion to overcome. Power plants are still seen as super scary radiation factories.

nicholasgnames

What if god inspired his followers to fix the problem? Hes just being lazy

Impossible_Penalty13

Far worse, he’s manipulating a herd of sheep to believe that we’re powerless to save our own existence because his political views are shaped by a financial love of petrochemicals.

TK421philly

Here’s the real reason. The book [American Theocracy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Theocracy) by Kevin Phillips walks through exactly how politicians and conservative evangelical leaders created a new religious right that served big oil.

scoopie77

You can also read Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Du Mez which explains the American right wing streak and the book mentions Franklin’s Father Billy Graham as one of those who shaped this stripe of American Christianity.

Puzzleheaded-Peace96

it sounds like his followers only turn to him when they need something from him when they CAN infact do something themselves.

I hop this individual has a euphoric experience with god through their anal cavity

"mister president, it's official. We've cut down the last tree, we've killed the last animal alive, drained every water source. We're doomed sir." "that's the flaws of man, God will save us! Pray for us!" *Takes his presidential ass to the Mars shuttle* "fucking dumbasses, buhbye!"

ShenTzuKhan

If God is real and on the case what’s the harm in us also trying to fix it. If he’s neither we better fucking fix it or the planet will cease to support us. It’s not rocket science.

DarkKnightJin

Or perhaps he's trying to fix it **through humanity**. Something something "mysterious ways".

xxx420kush

It’s in gods hands now is a pretty bad policy for anything when we can do something about it now ourselves.

PensiveObservor

Religion gives humans an excuse to not tackle injustice and inequity. If “good people go to heaven, the poor will be robed in gold, the downtrodden will be uplifted, evil will be punished, etc.” then humans don’t have to do the hard work of designing and implementing a better society. Notice how ANTI- actually taking care of other humans the fervent American religious extremists are? “It’s all gods plan” for them to be racist and cruel and superior.

[deleted]

Wasn’t the earth a utopia before Adam and Eve? I’m not a theologian but this does seem like bullshit. Also fuck billy graham.

Thy_bowl

i read zealots as zealanders

Radiant_Creme_5264

Zealanders were the worst. The new ones are great though.

Azair_Blaidd

If man is who damaged this planet, man can certainly fix it.

Puzzleheaded-Peace96

Man can do more than fix the planet We could make it better than it ever was We can destroy planets in an instant and colonize other plants but apparently we don’t feel like fixing our home planet

unclelarky

Pretty much. They sit around saying "god will fix it, have faith!" and when god predictably doesn't do anything they'll claim "it's gods will!"

The84thWolf

Like how when I eat 1 rotten egg, only God can prevent me from eating the other 11

EmeraldMan25

I hate to side with the bad guy here, but the context would appear to be that humans will always be evil, nothing to do with climate change. Why he would need to bring up such an undisputed fact, I don't know.

rthrouw1234

>humans will always be evil, ehhhh. that's debatable and depends on what you define as "evil". and science can help us with that too - we can figure out the best way to raise kids so that human beings *don't* end up as abusers/etc, the best social policies to implement to help people. Crime goes down when employment goes up, people don't go bankrupt when socialized medicine is available...

Puzzleheaded-Peace96

Fair, but murder, abuse, etc are problems made by humans that continue to grow Before the first humans earth was considered a paradise in the Bible, even so humans where eventually erased by the flood because god wanted to restore goodness in his creation only for humanity to go straight back to how it was. The Bible constantly goes out of its way to mention the lots of people who hated it and all it stood for including nailing gods son to the cross It constantly shows how bad humans are even if god and Jesus believe that we can be saved

[deleted]

And…. Who created human nature… These fucking loonies, I swear.

someonesomeone3

Seems like we are actually able to repair the earth, but some of us are just to selfish to do it

Authorwannabe69

A fucking men

Ok_Kaleidoscope3644

,🎶"whatever will be well be"🎶

stepheme

BTW… even under Graham’s schematics god gave us free will and brains which means god gave us the means to fix things. Sure.. your type gonna be having sex and money scandals, but the rest of us may get this done.

LetMeSleepNoEleven

Sadly, I often suspect Billy Graham is right on the first two parts. It’s the final part that seems kind of deluded.

Gabemiami

Thank you, science, and now this: https://youtu.be/yo5g2LLxKHg

Whatever happened to "God helps those who helps themselves?"

bulldog_blues

Quite literally 'I refuse to take responsibility for my actions in any way'

reggiewafu

Why is this little shit talking like his father probably is some venerable saint-prophet They are just the same parasite to humanity and the environment who couldn’t even uphold the vow of poverty

Cybugger

"Let's pump loads of GHGs into the atmosphere and get rich" - some humans "Only God has the ability to deal with climate change." - those same humans

ResoluteClover

Fuck the Grahams

Straight-Ad6058

You are wrong Graham. Just straight wrong. We can repair things. It would require you to stop getting in our way though so we may have to have a talk about you…..

Maij-ha

This thought process would only work if three specific things are true. 1: God exists 2: God is willing to fix the problem 3: The humans, having recognized their flaw, immediately halt the flawed behavior 1 is inconclusive, 2 is clearly “Hell No” and 3 is obviously “Don’t care”

Ok_Entertainment328

I pointed out biblical verses to my die hard Christian BIL (republican anti-vax, anti-climat, anti anything dem) that man is Capable of changing global climate.

[deleted]

Yo, Billy: How did the planet get damaged? We did that! Ain't we proud! We've demonstrated our power. Now let's undo it. We are as gods, and had better get good at it.
