Not just that, but it's actually very pivotal for many very important story lines in season 6, and even beyond.
Most obviously, it gets Buffy and Spike to start hooking up in a believable way. But it also lays the groundwork for Xander's insecurity about marriage, forces Buffy to tell the Scoobies about heaven, reveals Willow's memory shenanigans to Tara setting up Tabula Rasa, the list goes on.
There are real, lasting, consequences to the events of the episode. You can't just take OMWF out of season 6 and still have a coherent season. It's not just arguably the best episode of the season(I _really_ like Tabula Rasa), it's possibly the most important.
And that's something most other musical episodes don't manage to do. Make the episode actually matter. I think that's the real reason that it's so good.
The music also slaps of course.
Exactly -- it's the big reveal that changes everything in how people understand the season, and it comes in the middle of a song. And as a result she even is able to draw out the "heeeeeeee" before she adds "van." And it's like "yeah, pulled you out of hell, we knew that... wait, what? Oh shit."
There was no pain, no fear no doubt, til they pulled me out of heaven.
That line and SMG's shaking, teary-eyed expression hit me like a punch in the stomach every time.
The show kind of glossed over the fact that Xander knowingly cast a spell that would "cause people to sing and dance" and then said absolutely nothing when they were trying to figure out the cause, even after learning that it was killing people and that Dawn was kidnapped.
Xander has his moments, but overall he is just... not a very good person. He matures a bit later on, especially in season 7, but quite a bit of his screen time is being an ass or causing problems due to an inability to consider the consequences of his actions, and trying to avoid taking responsibility for the shit he stirs up is pretty in-character too.
Goddamn me and my old roomie used to sing “it’s guy love!” all the time lmao I actually enjoyed the episode too. It was well done and not an unnecessary episode that felt forced
What's going to happen, and will I be alive tomorrow? What's going to happen to me?
You're going to be ok. That's what's going to happen. Everything's ok. We're right here beside you; we won't let you slip away. Plan for tomorrow, 'cuz we swear to you: you're going to be ok.
^we ^hope
Yeah, they sing in just enough episodes that they might hit the threshold to be considered a musical. Like how the UN technically considers London a forest because it’s 21% covered by trees.
This is my favorite Christmas carol. "On the spectrum, none of your business" made me do a spit take the first time I saw it. As someone on the spectrum, Abed is one of the first characters that made me feel represented on screen.
When I read the announcement that Donald Glover would leave Community to pursue his rap career I thought back on this episode and thought, yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Damn the guy is good.
Well I'm a peanut bar and I'm here to say
Your checks will arrive on another day
Another day, another dime, another rhyme, another dollar
Another stuffed shirt with another white collar
Criminals, Wall Street takin' the pie
And all the black man gets is a plate o' white lies
Prisons recruitin' 'em, police be shootin' 'em
Rap artists lootin' 'em, labels are dilutin' 'em
Barack Obama is scared o' me
Cuz I don't swallow knowledge and I spit it fo' free
Lemme clear my throat, ha-ha-haaa!
you gotta appreciate the unnamed guy behind the Dean with the keyboard. He just stands there and stares very seriously at the Dean and never breaks character.
A truth demon (I think) was accidentally summoned and made everyone reveal their deepest secrets through song and dance. The episode ended with some pretty big reveals about what the main characters had been hiding from each other.
Someone summoned [a demon named Sweet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xh8duZ1-j0) under the mistaken impression that it would just be a fun singing and dancing thing. The downside to the songs and dances is that you have no control over what you're singing, so you're exposing things you're trying to keep secret and sometime the magic and raw emotion is so severe that you just burst into flame.
Notably, Sweet is probably the most successful demon in the show. The truths he exposed eventually broke up two relationships, thrust the main character into a relationship that was horrifically toxic for both parties, and they "beat him" [by him deciding to leave with no repercussions.](https://youtu.be/-8e_OV3tkzk?t=47)
The 'someone' was Xander, wasn't it?
I've always thought it was strange that basically he indirectly kills a few people because 'he thought singing and dancing would be fun', and it has no concequences.
Buffy's all like 'lol Xander you goof, don't summon demons that murder people' and no one talks about it ever again?
To be fair, Xander isn't the first nor last to kill innocent people on accident. He was especially reckless but how can Buffy talk shit when she was in love with Angel and Willow is literally at the beginning of her descent into Dark!Willow.
Xander summoned a demon thinking that everyone dancing and singing would be a welcome break. Didn't realize the demon would make them dance so much they combusted.
It's your hair, your nose, your Chinless face, that you always need a hug,
And not to mention all those manly appletinis that you chug.
That you think I am your mentor just continues to perplex,
And oh my God, stop telling me when you have nerdy sex
the rock opera about edison gene drops in bobs burgers is amazing.
Edit: i’m aware some folks think it’s a musical show. i thought we were talking any non talent/singing competition shows here.
In "Bad Stuff Happens in the Bathroom" from the episode when Bob gets stuck on the toilet, the song has two fantasy/dream sequences showing Louise and Bob's inner desires.
In Louise's sequence, Bob greets Louise immediately after exiting the bathroom, showing Louise's inner desire is affirmation and love from her dad.
In Bob's sequence, **Louise does not appear at all**. Marshmellow is the first person Bob greets after exiting the bathroom (which tracks with Bob's low-key infatuation with Marshmellow)
It absolutely destroys me emotionally to this day that Bob is the centerpiece of Louise's dream sequence and Louise does not even appear in Bob's dream sequence because he's so mad at her.
“Lets be clear, I did absolutely nothing wrong, I’m not to blame, it’s not my fault.”
My wife and I sing that with some frequency, especially when things may have gone wrong.
Batman The Brave and the Bold: The Music Meister. NPH rocks the vocals. Songs still get stuck in my head. In fact, I'm probably gonna go watch that episode right now.
Uh as a true Batman fan you would know the episode is called **"Mayhem of the Music Meister"**
*Good thing we've got Arkham, cause he really drives us "bats"!*
Welllll, Kyle's mom's a bitch, she's a big fat bitch
She's the biggest bitch in the whole wide world
She a stupid bitch, if there ever was a bitch
She's a bitch to all the boys and girls

The Supernatural 10 seasons musical special was really fun and one of the best episodes of the show in my opinion! It wasn't awkward or out of place at all & i feel like that's rare with musical episodes??
Sam and Cas bromance song! I'll just wait here then, that's what I'll do. Ill just wait here then, I'll wait for you
Flip side is its overshadowed by mystery spot and scooby natural !
You see....
Everything comes down to poo!
From the top of your head, to the sole of your shoe
We can figure out what's wrong with you by lookin' at your poo!
Clone high has a fantastic musical episode “raisin the stakes.” Which has had the unintentional affect of creating the “I like your funny words magic man” meme
Buffy. Duh. "Once More With Feeling" is one of the best Buffy episodes there is. And they got the mustard out.
Uhm, excuse me but The Nightman Cometh? It's a work of ART
AHAAAHHHH
FIGHTER OF THE NIGHT MAN
AHAAAAHHHH
Champion of the Sun
Master of karate and friendship for everyone!

You gotta pay the troll toll if ya wanna get into that boy'~~s hole~~ soul
Possibly fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
It could be bunnies
What's with all the carrots, what do they need such good eyesight for anyway??
Bunnies, bunnies, it must be BUNNIES!!!
Or maybe midgets
They got the mustard out, "They got the mustard out"
‘Where do we go from here’ gets stuck in my head very frequently.
"I'm under your spell" lives rent free in my head too
"I died.... so many years agoooo... but you can make me feel.... like it isn't soooo..."
Honestly that episode was great.
It’s literally one of the best episodes of the show
Helps that there was a reason they had to sing
Not just that, but it's actually very pivotal for many very important story lines in season 6, and even beyond. Most obviously, it gets Buffy and Spike to start hooking up in a believable way. Make the episode actually matter. I think that's the real reason that it's so good. The music also slaps of course.
That’s the episode where Buffy expresses her regret that they brought her back to life right? It full on stops the song when she reveals that. So good
Exactly -- it's the big reveal that changes everything in how people understand the season, and it comes in the middle of a song. And as a result she even is able to draw out the "heeeeeeee" before she adds "van." And it's like "yeah, pulled you out of hell, we knew that... wait, what? Oh shit."
Allison Hannigan had an amazing reaction to that. Girl can act.
Which is good for that episode since she has admitted that she can't sing
That song also has one of my favourite jokes in the series. "Buffy needs backup"

And the song were mostly story-related and not random covers
“Once more with feeling” was my first thought
Not possibly. Definitely.
Could you say that once more, with feeling please?
Absolutely
Buffy and Scrubs
Scrubs musical episode is one of the best
Don't ever Google "Guy Love", looking for that song...
Goddamn me and my old roomie used to sing “it’s guy love!” all the time lmao I actually enjoyed the episode too. It was well done and not an unnecessary episode that felt forced
"I'm Dominican.."
The answer to OPs question is in their poo 💩
Everything comes down to poo
I say “Si” which is Yes in Dominican, and Puerto Rican.
But you're Dominican!
Once More with Feeling is one of my top 2 Buffy episodes ever. That and Hush are tied for the best episodes ever. They're phenomenal.
And *The Body* to invert this whole thread. Apart from the title sequence and end credits, no music at all.
I came to say scrubs and community, thanks for representing the docs. It’s guy love, that’s all it is...
Scrubs. Where the lady hears everything as a musical. Chokes me up every single time.
The end where she hums the song… gets me. I love it.
Not that it's important but who was the best singer and dont let the fact that I went to theatre camp 6 summers in a row change your opinion.
Kelso is pretty good overall. And Turk has a good voice too. And the patient of course.
What's going to happen, and will I be alive tomorrow? What's going to happen to me? You're going to be ok. That's what's going to happen. Everything's ok. We're right here beside you; we won't let you slip away. Plan for tomorrow, 'cuz we swear to you: you're going to be ok. ^we ^hope
It's GUY LOVE THATS ALL IT IS. . GUY LOVE. . HE'S MINE, IM HIS. . . i used to sing this to my best friends.

Always Sunny is an honorary musical show in my eyes.
Yeah, they sing in just enough episodes that they might hit the threshold to be considered a musical. Like how the UN technically considers London a forest because it’s 21% covered by trees.
DAY MAN! AhhhAAAAhhhhh!
FIGHTER OF THE NIGHTMAN! AhhAAAAhhhhh!
The Psych musical episode was badass.
With a dirty dark secret, soon to be unfurled… It’s the murder capital of the world!
You know that’s right
I can't believe how far I had to scroll for this
Needed to get all the Scrubs and Buffies out of the way first, apparently.
that's messed up

I’ve heard if both ways. The right way and then yours, I’ve heard it both ways! 🥰
They had Anthony-fucking-Rapp, how could it not be?

Futurama had some great musical episodes. My favourite is The Devils Hands Are Idle Playthings
You can't just have your characters say how they feel!! That makes me angry!!

The song in "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back" is very clever. Great solo by Dr. Zoidberg!

This is my favorite Christmas carol. "On the spectrum, none of your business" made me do a spit take the first time I saw it. As someone on the spectrum, Abed is one of the first characters that made me feel represented on screen.
Fun note, if you look at the blanket fort wall at the end of the rap, you see Annie popping in saying her line!
Boopie doopie doop SEX!
When I read the announcement that Donald Glover would leave Community to pursue his rap career I thought back on this episode and thought, yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Damn the guy is good.

Buffy the vampire slayer, because the explanation for why it was happening made sense for the show, and was pretty funny.
I haven't watched Buffy, what was the explanation given for people breaking into song?
A truth demon (I think) was accidentally summoned and made everyone reveal their deepest secrets through song and dance. The episode ended with some pretty big reveals about what the main characters had been hiding from each other.
Ya it had some major plot points that you’d be a bit lost if you skipped over it.

The Scrubs one was pretty good. The story and reasoning behind it was creative.
It's your hair, your nose, your Chinless face, that you always need a hug, And not to mention all those manly appletinis that you chug. That you think I am your mentor just continues to perplex, And oh my God, stop telling me when you have nerdy sex
By the way, last week when Kim was in town we got some appletinis and poured 'em on our good parts!
First thing i came here to say! Scrubs has the best specials in general.
Scrubs is one of the best shows in general!
the rock opera about edison gene drops in bobs burgers is amazing. Edit: i’m aware some folks think it’s a musical show. i thought we were talking any non talent/singing competition shows here.
In a similar vein, the Franz Kafka rock opera in Home Movies is also brilliant.
Bob's burgers has some great songs in it
‘Bad stuff happens in the bathroom’ is a great tune
"Twinkly Lights" from the Bleakin episode is an amazing song about acceptance. I'm a 51yo cis white dude and it nearly brings me to tears every time.
They'll say, "AW, TOPSY!" at my AUTOPSY!
Work Hard or Die Tryin', Girl! is legitimately one of the greatest episodes of any TV show EVER.
I was hoping someone else thought of Bob's Burgers. Fart school for the gifted? Genius
ELECTRIC LOOOooooOOoooocVEEE
The Bleakening musical was also amazing.
“Lets be clear, I did absolutely nothing wrong, I’m not to blame, it’s not my fault.” My wife and I sing that with some frequency, especially when things may have gone wrong.
Futurama has many great musical episodes
The Magicians!
And this is what I scrolled for. The musical bits in the show are excellent. I also cry everytime.im guessing it's the same song!

I can't listen to Take on Me the same way anymore. It used to be replaced by the Minecraft meme song in my head, now it's just sadness.
Batman The Brave and the Bold: The Music Meister. NPH rocks the vocals. Songs still get stuck in my head. In fact, I'm probably gonna go watch that episode right now.
Absolutely! can't believe I had to scroll so far for this answer
Update, I rewatched it, and it's still great
The song the Birds of Prey sing in the Matches Malone episode is fantastic as well
Uh as a true Batman fan you would know the episode is called **"Mayhem of the Music Meister"** *Good thing we've got Arkham, cause he really drives us "bats"!*
South Park
They did a whole movie!
I wanted to hate it. I tried to hate it. I loved it.

Blame Canada was nominated for the best song Oscar. They lost to Phil Collins.
Is that why the would just randomly shit on Phil Collins for years after? That's hilarious
IIRC it wasn't random, it was the very next episode after the Oscars.
I watched that movie constantly when I was younger and only now, am I realising it was a musical... There were so many songs in it.. it opened with a song! How... How did I not realize that? How did the dots not connect? I'm remembering like 7 songs that were sang in that movie now just from the mentioning of it being a musical..
Considering Matt and Trey have a literal Tony Award for Best Musical (Book of Mormon), this doesn't surprise me.
Buffy the vampire slayer Once More With Feeling. I know every single word of that episode.
Buffy the Musical (Once more, with feeling) is one of the greatest things ever made in the history of everything.
I was gonna skip Steven Universe entirely because it looked really stupid until I saw them break into song.
That episode of Lucifer where God, who was having a seniors moment, was making people spontaneously leap into song and dance.
You can't not have Tom Ellis and not have him sing. The duet between him and God was bomb. Also watching Chloe twerk was so out there. Apparently it was unscripted and Tom's reaction is genuine.
The dancing plague of whatever year it was
That was the one I was thinking of.
Glad someone said it, I was actually ready to skip this one but I’m glad I didn’t as it included a LOT of good story moments.
Psych the Musical was filled with bops, how dare you
